Israel's Iron Beam is the world’s first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets & mortars at a cost of $3.50 per shot. Are energy weapons becoming a viable option for modern armies?
🎬 Key Points:
📌 Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system developed by Israel to intercept short-range rockets. It has been effective but expensive.
📌 A new threat emerged in the form of small, cheap drones used by Israel's enemies.
📌 Iron Beam is a new laser weapon system being developed by Israel. It is designed to be more cost-effective than Iron Dome for shooting down drones, rockets, and mortars.
📌 Iron Beam is still under development, but it is expected to be deployed on land, sea, and air.

The laser section of iron dome is no longer subject to weather. In short, it is guided by infrared and another still classified targeting system so the lasers can quickly and accurately point into the path of an incoming ordinance to take it out. It does not need to hit it in flight as it reads the flight path and creates the beam into that path.
Is this effective against anti radiation missiles and super sonic/hyper sonic missiles?
@@Contractor48 ARMs yes and hypersonic theoretically yes but the classified targeting is apparently light years ahead of anything out there but can’t make a reasonable assertion about it.

One limitation of laser based defense systems is the very high amount of electrical energy needed per shot. Some use a bank of super capacitors, which can recharged quickly and discharged quickly in high enough amounts of energy needed. Power sources to charge systems varies from batteries to portable power generators. There are chemical based batteries that can generate electrical power by mixing chemicals. No long extension cord from power source to laser system. It is very compact and can easily be topped off with more chemicals.

One more thing ,I wonder if other types of high energy besides laser is being studied, like microwave transmission or other narrowed emissions at different frequencies.Maybe in the future?
Most industrial cutting lasers operate around microwave frequencies. Most radar operates around microwave frequencies. Many radio communications operate around microwave frequencies.
Because the atmosphere - the air these things move through - happens to dampen, filter, scatter, and attenuate frequencies outside the microwave band.
You can bet that weaponized lasers are designed to exploit the best spectra they can for performance, efficiency, and cost.
Lasers aren't very useful vs reflective surfaces. So they have limited effect vs metal and polymer at distance. And they would have limited effect vs stealth materials or geometries.
Lasers and microwaves have been forbidden by the U.N to be used on humans or animals and this kind of laser as you know of course is used in order to destroy rockets but some individuals did develop it again recently , some consortium which wants to bring the chaos through the absurdum and they have been already punished three times .

The challenges that will be considered in the future is reaction time of the system and human action because the future missiles, jets, and bombers will be travelling faster than the speed of sound (@Mach 3) with smoke screen. The next challenge is the effective range of the laser since the missiles, drones and bombers will be flying at least 4 kilometers above ground. The last challenge is when the Satellite will then be capable of firing lasers or concentrated radiation to the ground, and these will not be affected by lasers.
The first issue is the amount of self-invented nonsense in your comment. Although it is relatively easy to build and fly a Mach 3 aircraft use of this is limited as an S-400 SAM exceeds Mach 5. The second issue is "smoke screen". Is this referring to stealth or just a bunch of Hollywood stuff you watched on your living room TV? The next issue is that the service ceiling of your average airliner is around 13 km up, and the maximum intercept altitude of an S-400 (which is one of the more used SAMs) is 35 km (far above your average F-22 which has a ceiling of 20 km). You will not need a laser if you can lock an aircraft on radar. The last issue is the 1967 Outer Space Treaty forbids the placing of weapons of mass destruction in orbit. While lasers are not strictly classified as WMDs it is still of course the same to someone on the receiving end and sure as hell will not be allowed to slide by anyone with no suicidal tendencies.

Hi guys, great channel...
Just wondering if the thumbnail for this one is the Homer Simpson bot firing a laser gun into space... Lol.
Keep up the great work.
This is not the first directed energy weapon (DEW) to be actively deployed. The US Navy began fitting 30kW lasers to some of of its combat ships three years ago and will upgrade them with more powerful versions as they become available. The physical space and power generation available on a ship, especially a nuclear-powered one like an aircraft carrier, far surpasses that of any aircraft or vehicle so it is the ideal platform for this weapons technology. So long as a nation is not land-locked, ships with directed energy weapons can be used to help protect its borders from incoming missile attack, with land-based DEWs being the other half of the defense equation. Apart from costing peanuts per shot in relative terms, a DEW system also overcomes the traditional 'magazine problem' where the defender runs out of ammunition and is overwhelmed by incoming missiles.

Although I’m not too happy about Israel’s relationship with Palestine. I do commend the Resolve the Israeli people. Also, the U.S. was invited by Israel to help develop and enhance the iron dome defense system and that intellectual exchange was greatly valuable to us and the Israelis. I know people think the we in the U.S. have some of the best defense systems, and that is very likely true in most cases but, the people of Israel definitely know their stuff as well. 🇺🇸 ❤ 🇮🇱
I wish none of it was necessary, but since it seems to be, I'm pleased Israel is at the forefront
It won't help them much when thousands of missiles start raining down on IsraHell 😉
@Yippee Skippy
No Israeli is NOT "innocent".
They all have blood on their hands...and they will pay a very heavy price for it some day 😉
Or you could just not be assholes and get the whole world to hate you. The whole killing kids thing is bad PR
@@sophiesakura2719 haha..my kids get killed too. You just have ingrained bias or are not curious enough to find out what happened in this region
@@yochevedbrachasimon4979 when you kill all the intellectuals you end up with psychos like Hamas. Wishing you well from Canada but the reality is war as usual.
IT IS NOT AN IRON DOME UPGRADE! IRON BEAM is an entirely different and separate system designed to augment Iron Dome. When you say upgrade, that means improving the Iron Dome by upgrading its system.
star trek grade vessel however, requiring us to master fusion power first and solve research advance material science
Lasers are basically ineffective if it’s really cloudy. Plus further developments will render them useless.
I know how hard it is to develop tech to hit targets in the air but Israel did it.
You mean US

This is a great technology. Their biggest obstacle is the weather condition. I believe their Kryptonite will be rain and wind, but still an effective weapon for defense.
Publicly available information says that there's plans to integrate the system in UAVs flying above cloud cover. This is much more complicated though, so expected to take longer to develop (specifically sufficient energy sources)
@@alimanski7941 Sci-fi becoming true.
The system could be layered with missiles and flak guns as well.
Palestinian rockets fare much worse in those conditions. Not really a concern....
@@desertbloom9634 weather barely has any effect on Palestinian rockets. They’re not guided.
Great way of protection.
It's called a defense system, but defense *prevention* system would be a more accurate term.
Gonna respond mate ?
@Clownfish because iran knows that when its use missiles vs Israel and at least 70% will fail then Israel will counter strike with cruise missiles and Iran can just watch
God bless Israel. Continue to give them wisdom in advancing their security developments.🙏
First salvo of light refractive materials and it's beam is weakened basically a powerful flashlight.
Wether you like Israel or not you must admit that engeneering wise, the iron dome and iron beam is a miracle.
Awesome! May God continue to protect and bless Israel 🇮🇱

Then there’s the Ukrainian guys using kids drones to drop upto 6 large Anti tank grenades with pin point accuracy and in many cases they are Russian made grenades which is very ironic tbh lol
the farmers are force to reckoned with now too
It's like no one learned a thing from history/WWII. Not a damn thing. Winter is coming. Try camping in -20'C.
Iron Dome and Iron Beam did an astonishing job in intercepting any flying rockets, missiles, drones, aircrafts, etc. These two war weapons are also what the ukrainians military need too.
Very good 👍👍👌👍👍👌 information nice....
now this defensive weapon I admire... 😳
Also offensive, the system will be assembled in drones maybe also in fighter jets instead of the cannon
One of my favourite in defence systems
7:26 I wonder what the badminton shuttlecock is used for.
Israel is the only country that has to continuously defend itself from constant attacks. Therefore defence is crucial for its existence. I imagine the provider of the enemy's weapons which is Iran will at some point become too much of a threat and Israel will have to destroy it's weapons plants. Then of course full scale war will break out. Let's hope that never happens but it certainly looks like it is heading that way.
@القائد الجديد ?
It will happen, and Israel will disappear from the world map..
You spoke too soon? How about Israel stop bombing Gaza as we all know the end game? Flatten Gaza!

If they are making all these crude weapons, where do they get all the tracking equipment for it? (That's built inside of it). I can't see them knowing much about how to make them fly accurately.
I'd wonder how well it performs in less than ideal atmospheric conditions compared to a clear day.
Not well, that's why an aircraft-based version is under development.
Israel is also working on technology to control the weather. Ultimately they will be able to control the terrorists brains directly so all these toys won't be needed.

Femtosecond pulsed LASERs are quantum phenomena where the dispersive absorptive, Atmosphere of classical Physics behaves as a Soliton, or self-reenforcing lens. Due to the short duration pulses, Matter that intersects with the beam explosively ablates vs the continuous LASER burning through Matter. Power output is tremendously augmented into the Terawatt range with far less Heat management issues.
Our enemies rockets fare much worse in those conditions. Not really a concern....
This channel needs to get some facts on Ratheon, which builds that system. A variety of laser weapons are now on every US naval ship and many aircraft which will cut up the enemy like sausages at the speed of light! Go ahead and see what happens when a US carrier group is attacked! Deadly! sm
