Tom Johnston is the voice of the greatest Doobie Brothers eras and he wrote almost all the great songs they produced. McDonald was only there because Johnston became very ill for a few years. But Johnston is the "real" voice of the DB. The bass player, Tyron, is one of the GOAT. They are still very active touring except Tyron retired long ago and one passed away. They formed in 1970. Today, they sound phenomenal and their vocals are-off-the-charts great. That "other singer" is Patrick Simmons. The biggest hit the DBs had was called "Black Water" and Simmons wrote and sang it. It was #1 for many months and more than worth doing a reaction video on!

McDonald and Johnston get along very well now. Along with their songs, and Patrick Simmon's songs ("Jesus is just alright" and "Blackwater"), the Doobies have a huge and diverse catalog. They are still touring, as all are currently in their 70's. They still play great and still draw big audiences.

I firmly believe this is one of the best songs ever. If you don't enjoy this whole track from start to end there is truly something wrong with you as a person. No matter where you came from, what you grew up listening to. If you don't tap your foot to this song, something wrong with you. OK there it is. true.

Patrick Simmons - one of the founders sang the bridge and Tommy Johnston sang lead. Tyran Porter on bass was also a badass singer, but Michael McDonald joined the band when Tommy got sick in the mid-70s but later returned. They are all family!

Something you youngin's have to understand is back then all we had was an album cover and the record inside. By this I'm saying we were into it for the music and the music only, unless you were lucky enough or lived close enough to an actual live concert. We didn't even have MTV yet. It was a different time, but it was a great time and some of the best musicians and bands came out of the late 60's and throughout the 70's. So many of the bands then played with a lot more soul than any other time in history.

Hey Van, that other singer you were asking about is Patrick Simmons and there is 4 things you had to do to be in the Doobie Brothers. COOK, SING, PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, AND ROLL BIG DOOBIES!! Funny I saw an interview with the band probably 30 years ago and Patrick Simmons mentioned that when they were sitting around trying come up with a new name for the band because the name they were using was already taken, someone said to them, well you guys smoke so many doobies you aught to call yourselves The Doobie Brothers. And the rest is history as they say. Great reaction and great band, I'm glad I've gotten to see them many many times over the years and they never disappoint no matter who is singing. Thanks Brother.

Tiran Porter is a fantastic bass player who, like many bass players, is under-celebrated. Here, he takes a simple inverted root-5 baseline and makes it unique and playful. I have the transcription of the syncopated bass fill he plays at 6:02 of this video tattooed on my left bicep.

Fun fact, in case you didn't know -
Michael was with Steely Dan before taking lead of the DB. As a solo artist he has written & sang major hits, has some of the best duets out there, and many songs where he does harmonies. Talk about a great career. Sheeeez!

The helmet the drummer had on could be bought back in the 70's at Radio Shack.
    I think they had 3.

    3: Green Military Police helmet
And yes, The Lights did work/rotate (2 C Cell?)

Check out "Nobody" (video version) by this band. Also should try "South City Midnight Lady" and "Clear as the driven snow." - All great tunes. Also a fun fact......the guitar player in the middle is Jeff (Skunk) Baxter who was with the Doobies in the 70's, Steely Dan in the 80's, and after that worked for the military as a missile defense consultant.

You're the first person who I've ever seen get this right. This tune, with the highly syncopated steel drum ostinato pattern on the verse and the slick banjo comp on the choruses is more of a funk groove than rock or anything else! Very good, you're astute.
