Finally got around to watching this as well after watching your MediEvil video. Great coverage. Gonna add some more sidelore because why not :D The race at 26:38 was my first ever race on SpeedRunsLive, and was delayed by around an hour because I was a dumb 15 year old who didn't know how to set up ePSXe, and also had very little practice on swim into Ripto. Yes, i genuinely had people guide me through the trick before the race so that I could actually finish when we started lol Saboom and Touval's rivalry is also legendary as far as head to heads go in speedrunning. Witnessing them trade blows back in the day was mesmerizing, both averaging several hundreds of viewers and reaching the top of the SRL front page. I remember when Puppet found waterfall proxy too and how much that threw a wrench in everything. Also shoutouts to Lapogne for pioneering god damn every playstation game known to man Great video man, keen to see more
what a banger video. Came here after watching the current WR, so during this vid I kept thinking "when does Bluntbows come in?" Can't believe someone just came in in 2021 and worked up that level of play so fast, insane
I see Salt's videos have rubbed off on you a bit, and holy shit is that a good thing, this is a damn impressive video for a damn impressive run. Really hope that your channel can pop off thanks to this video, well done.
I've watched a lot of speedrunning documentaries and this is probably one of the best I've seen. The narration and the script are spot on, and the story you were outlining really kept it interesting throughout the entire video. I had never heard of this game before and didn't know any of the mechanics, but I came away feeling like I knew the game in detail. Really loved it, would be cool to see more!
Pretty late but just got around to watching this. Awesome job capturing the progression of the game. Had a big smile on my face during the later bits of the video.
My uncle used to speedrun Mario, I think the 2nd one with warps. Ever since I’ve been interested in beating games fast. I’ve never truly speedran a game but watching videos like this reminds me what I love so much about speed running; the progression. Ty for telling this story. It's funny watching a game you used to play as a kid casually be completely broken
I had no clue that I would make an appearance at 1:24:17, at 57th place that is lol. Very good video; didn’t know much about the history of this category so I had no clue how many discoveries it took before we got to the route we use today. Thank you for making this; ended up watching this video all the way through!
Just finished watching this. What a masterpiece. Thank you for all your efforts you put into this, learnt a lot about the speedrunning history of Spyro 2.
So glad this popped up on my feed. Always love finding these videos going in-depth on speedruns for games I love. They're so fascinating and well researched. Great work.
Wow, this video was an absolute treat! Spyro speed running is incredibly fascinating and you’ve done an unbelievably good job explaining and documenting not only the history of the category, but all the little nuances that make up the any% route we have today. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this documentary! You have some serious talent. I hope you continue to make videos like these!
This was a fantastic video, s2 is my favourite game of all time and I've had such an interest in the speed running community behind it and I feel this did all of that justice so I just want to say thank you for putting together this masterpiece! Keep it up
Nothing makes me more nostalgic than seeing my favorite game from my childhood! Great video it's always awesome to see people still appreciate this game even after all these years!
Lapogne is such a speedrunning icon He's responsible for some of the most incredible skips in dozens of games. I wish more people knew about his exploits
I do wonder why they don't remove load times in categories like this (or at least standardise them to 1 value, even if the run itself may have a faster or slower load). Even if the gameplay has some lag even outside of load times, surely removing load times would level the playing field more generally and not make it so brutal for certain systems. Since I've seen games that remove load times, but others that do not Very cool vid btw, I saw the Punch-Out challenge video and then watched this one after and despite being 2 hours long it was a good watch and didn't feel like a 2 hour long video
I have super fond memories of playing Spyro 2 and 3 on my PS1 back in the day. Lots of hours of fun. The strats and the times are insane, hats off to all the runners for their skill and dedication. Thank you for a very informative and entertaining video!
My god. The effort involved. I used to make videos, so believe me when I say this I'm insanely impressed the everything that went into this. God tier content. This was an excellent video, and a great way to spend an afternoon. Full of context and nostalgia for those of us who played it when it came out, and enough back story to where I could draw a logical step from what I knew playing the game, to what was being done on screen.
my dude that was an awesome watch. i literally thought around halfway through, before the gulp skip part that i can't get any lower only to find out i was only halfway through the vid xD i can't imagine the amount of work and time this cost. huge thumbs up, keep up the amazing work, dude =)
Talk about a journey, honestly, I can't imagine the feeling of excitement, and even more so, relief, they had once Waterfall Proxy was deemed outdated.
I noticed a cycle in speedrunning. as optimisation increases, people start investing more effort into finding new strats and skips, which decreases optimization requirements for a great time. Then with time optimisation increases again, putting more pressure to find non-obvious timesaves.
Theres a few nostalgic ps1 games which i could make a video about, I started making another, but the community were not that interested in helping me research and the 1st runner i was talking to didnt respond to me after I tried to message him a couple of times. Its annoying, but ive made 8 minutes of that video... Ill complete it eventually whether people want to help me or not.

I've watched through this a few times so far and my biggest question is, can't you simply skip the bosses by finding the hub portals under the maps? If the hub portals are right next to the boss holes, I don't see why they can't be accessed just like Dragon Shores. I'm not a speed runner but since this game came out I knew about double jump and Sproder and a few things like that just on my own, not to the extremes the runners do, but I've learned a bit and would think the portal thing would hold true.
I actually asked this question when i was first learning the 14 talisman category a few years ago... Turns out the portals to skip to other worlds arent hidden below the map, they just flat out dont exist until the boss is beaten.
i used to do this but never had a run get past the winter tundra waterfall proxy into ripto... when i saw a short bit of gulp skip in your intro i want to try again
