Hey Rob - This video is filled with greatness. I can't even imagine attempting such a list. The Smiths and XTC would be on it for sure, though, and maybe Echo. The Stones and The Who seem like the odd ones out here, but I really like them too.
As always, enjoyed this very much. Always on the lookout for bands you like. Limiting it to 10 makes lists like this so difficult. I’m crate digging in Amsterdam this afternoon, maybe I’ll find some of these. Cheers.
You're right, not an easy challenge, probably like asking a French person to give you a list of his top ten favorite wines or cheese haha. Seriously, British artists/bands hold a very special place in my my heart as I grew up listening to the Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. As a young adult I was very into 80s synth pop/new wave as I was a fan of Depeche Mode and liked bands such as Ultravox, OMD, The Smiths, The Cure and all projects/bands Vince Clarke was involved in. Then, ater in my thirties, I became a hardcore fan of progressive music which has obviously introduced me to great names of the genre such as Genesis, Yes, ELP, Soft Machine, Caravan, Camel, Greenslade, King Crimson, Gentle Giant to name a few. And I recently discovered other - I would say - underrated British groups such as Family, Fairport Convention, Small Faces and the Jam !! whose contribution was very valuable. That being said, sounds like an impossible challenge to do for me haha
Hi now a top 10 cheeses is a video I’d watch😀 ! You sound similar to me were on our musical journey and the fun part is unless you decide to get off it never stops .. just this year I’ve bought my first rush and camel albums which I’m really enjoying. Another great comment .. many thanks from Manchester 👍
Hi Rob - Looking forward to playing Southampton next year ! My favourite New Order Track is on Movement .." Truth " with Bernie on Melodica. Seeing two of my favourite British bands this week , The Cure tonight & The Bunnymen on Saturday ! It feels like 1981 again ! Cheers 🍻 Rob.
Hi David picked up mixed up by the cure on Sunday at the boot sale for £10! Looks like Leeds and Leicester will be joining Southampton enjoy those gigs up the canaries 👍⚽️
Top top video Rob. We tend to like best the bands we grew up with and as a child of the 60's The Who and The Stones would be on my list too. I was also mod influenced but first time round so would have to include the Small Faces, and The Kinks. We can be proud that GB has produced such world class talents.
Hi Christopher it was tough just choosing 10 and the bands you mentioned nearly made the cut. Thanks for watching and commenting it’s really appreciated 👍
I haven't seen this thread yet. Great picks. The only one I differ with you on is XTC... but maybe I haven't heard enough of them. Bunnymen, Smiths, Police, .... so many great Brit bands its hard to get down to just ten. I don't know a lot of PIL but what I've heard I really like. Mine would definitely have Blur and Pulp and probably Supergrass and Radiohead
Hi the strength of British music is highlighted when you attempt to choose your top 10. I could easily have done my top 30.. but I like to keep my videos around 10 minutes. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Jealous you got to see XTC and Echo. Love your choices. The Smiths, The Police, The Who and The Jam!! Love it!! My First concert was The Smiths during The Queen Is Dead Tour 1986!
Great list Rob. I saw the Super Furry Animals at Nottingham Sound City back in the noughties. They were really great but for some reason I never got into their records. I'm on Spotify now at last so they're on my list of stuff to check out.
Hi James I’m sure your list would be totally different but there’s no right or wrong which is why these videos are fun. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Excellent video and some great choices Rob. I'm not sure I have enough bands or a top 10. I know that sounds strange but whilst i like a lot of music there's a few select an bands i own everything of. I definitely wouldn't be able to put them in an order as it changes all the time.
Hi Rob, Perfect start to your list with that Stones album. I have a copy of that PIL on compact disc. Drums & Wires is my favorite XTC album as well. Fuzzy Logic is another one I have on compact disc. New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen...I was really into The Police when I was a young teenager and have everything. I definitely share your enthusiasm for The Police. Same with The Smiths. The Who also well deserved to be on this list. Anything relative to Paul Weller is alright with me.
Hi mike I don’t mind ranking bands against each other it’s fun but there’s so many great uk bands to choose from .. during the year I’m hoping to do more of these top 10s thanks for watching and commenting 👍
What I Like about your video - you are describing your choices and you are so genuine - interestingly the choices are mostly bands that became popular when you were 15 to 25 i guess apart from the stones and the who - i knew the jam were going to be no 1 - weller is king or modfather - i'll try and do this thread but suspect my choice will be early 70s - thanks rob
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you show such a genuine smile as when you were talking about the Who, The Jam and being a mod! Nice! Cool list! Thanks for sharing!! Cheers, Jon
Hi Rob - another very enjoyable video. I would possibly put your No 1 and No 2 around the other way. I feel I need to do a video response on this thread. I'll probably go the emotional route i.e. my FAVOURITES rather than the scientific "Gatefold33" route. Three scooters - WOW ! Have a great week-end. Cheers Bill
Hi bill this top 10 was a challenge there’s so many great British groups to choose from.. but it’s fun and I’ve been enjoying everyone’s response. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi Rob, interesting list mate, i didnt expect to see your #10 choice in the list at all and no Beatles in sight??? my #1 wasnt along with several others i would have picked which gives me an idea for my response video. Regards Lloyd
Hi Lloyd I was sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your previous channel . This thread would be a good one to do for content on your new channel it’s great to have you back lloyd 👍
Thanks for the mention. Great Britain was kind of spoiled with amazing bands. I haven't really explored PIL's catalog and feel like I should. I am a fan of Super Furry Animals. I'm glad The Who were so high.
Hi randy , as I said in my video I like this thread I’ve never really shared my favourites on my channel so this might turn into a mini series . I’d start with the best of public image on cd .. when I first got into pil I had to be in certain mood to appreciate them thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi Rob, this thread is ridiculously difficult! I liked every band you showed, and couldn’t argue against any, BUT, strangely my list would be very different. The reality is I really need a top 25! Mike🎸
Hi mike it’s so difficult I could have easily one a top 30. But I aim for 10 minute videos these days so I could only do my top 10. Thanks for watching and commenting mike 👍
Great list, Rob! I love the Smiths!! Here’s my (predictable) list: The Beatles Pink Floyd The Smiths Oasis Radiohead Dire Straits The Police The Cure Yes The Kinks
Hi Vivian all your choices are excellent. Everyone’s lists are different I enjoyed the challenge of picking just 10. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi Rob. I just got into The Smiths this year and have become quite a fan. It only took me 35-40 years to do so! Hahaha. And even after 45 years of listening to hundreds of records, Quadrophenia is still my all-time #1 album, and the movie is fantastic indeed!....I think we've already chatted about this, but it is worth repeating.... ;-)
Hi Jeff quadrophinia is my favourite too .. I instantly connected with the smiths they sung about where I lived and the humour in the songs is also something different .. thanks for watching and commenting Jeff 👍
This will be good.. PIL !! I have nothing on vinyl and some on Cd. XTC.. I like everything about that brilliant band ! I enjoy New Order more than Joy Division, actually.. the latter are a mood listen nowadays. The Police, Who.. and The Jam !! Can't beat this list rob.. Excellent.
Hi John these lists are fun to do but it’s a challenge as I’m a big fan of British.. it would be fun to see your 10 ! Thanks for watching and commenting John 👍
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay British or American ? Or both ! It would be fun to do my Top 10 British Bands.. and it might be best if I went from 1976 and on till now, otherwise I will wallow in the great British and Irish past ! LoL !! 🫡 Per Peter Green, Terry Reid, Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy.. pre 1976.
Hi Rob, what a challenge to pick your top 10 British bands. I wouldn’t be able to do it! Depeche Mode, OMD, Inspiral Carpets, Human League, Heaven 17, Belle & Sebastian, Suede, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Kasabian, The The, The Charlatans……..it’s endless!
Some surprises there Rob (Stones and Who) and some that weren't there that I thought would be (Inspiral Carpets & Wonderstuff). I clearly need to pay more attention...
Hi dale the who are very close to being my favourite band in my mod days they were the soundtrack to my youth.. and looking at the stones catalogue I had to include them. The inspiral carpets are one of my favourite Manchester bands for sure maybe I’ll do my top 10 Manchester bands at some point. I have. never loved elvis by the wonder stuff but I can’t remember ever mentioning them on my channel maybe you’re mixing me up with rob ison ?🤷🏼♂️. Enjoy the bank holiday thanks for watching 👍
SFA great. Great fun live. Better still are Gorkys Zygotic Mynci. Barafundle is a modern masterpiece. Like Echo & the Bunnymen 👍 My abiding memory was Glastonbury '97. Its difficult to maintain an air of aloof cool when you're being belted with mud.
PIL were one of my favorite bands in the 80’s. I saw their first LA gig in 79 and several times in the 80’s. New Order were the most boring band I’ve ever seen live. This Charming Man is such a great single. This is the only one I’ve watched of this thread. Good top ten but you missed the boat on some of your omissions.
Hi pat these list are so subjective I could name another 10 just as good but at the moment these are my favourites. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Being a "old timer" I would have to have the Rolling Stones near the top. Also over the years The Kinks were very popular and of course The Beatles. No doubt doing a poll of just 10 favorites can be very difficult to choose from.
When I do my American top 10 I think you’ll like one of my choices daddybog. These list are always difficult I had the stones and the who in my 10 .. I’m sure you could also do a great response. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
