    I just bought a 2017 Jetta lease return with less than 20k miles. I LOVE THIS CAR. I had a 98 1/2 and missed it dearly. VW did a great job updating this car. 💜

      I couldn't agree more! I've had my Jetta SE 5MT for 1 month and have 2200 miles on it already. I had intended to buy a different car but the performance and features for the price were really good and the driving dynamics finished it off for me. I've managed 45mpg average on the highway when I keep my foot out of it :)

      good for you :) I drove manual shift car 25 years ago I don't think I can drive it well plus it will be difficult to sell the used when I have to let her go.... otherwise, I would buy SE manual!

    After almost 47,000 miles and two weeks short of five(5) years of - honest - trouble free ownership....................
    The little 1.4L turbo 4 - thru a 5M - has (per Fuel) averaged just under 41 MPG.
    To be precise - 40.7 MPG since new.
    The other positives: large trunk, easy shifting 5M manual tranny - (effortless synchros), good disc brakes plus clutch friction point is uncomplicated.......

    i just bought the S trim 5spd out here in Florence, SC and I love everything about it. I wish it had some more features, but for an S model, I was extremely surprised at the amount of standard features. It even has heated mirrors in the base model. I will say once the break in period is over, I plan on having some more fun with it

      stick with the 1.4 because its a small displacement dual over head cam engine these things are practically built for revving because the cylinders are so small theres less weight and stress on the conrods so you can rev higher and because its 4-valve per cylinder you get good airflow in and good airflow out so theres room to expand and when you mod the engine you will see the results and because there less stress on the conrods you can really push it to its redline and you can up the boost too

    I just got a '18 Jetta SE automatic for 18,500 otd like 17,200 for the car before all the fees etc coming from a BMW it feels very similar.. german cars are all stable AF at high speeds thats why i like them. plus 72,000 6 YR warranty feels like a no brainier to me

      Agreed. Driving it WAY too hard for a brand new engine. I have a 2016 and it says in the owners manual to keep the revs down for the first 1000

      Exactly. It's not incredibly powerful, but it's very peppy and in the mid range revs it really likes to be driven quickly.

    I test drove a new 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport with a manual and a new 2018 Jetta SE 1.4 with a manual.
    The Elantra may be faster, but it feels as if Hyundai designed the 1.6 for an automatic as the power curve doesn't suit
    the stick at all. The Jetta seemed faster and is a joy to drive.

    I test drove a 2017 Jetta SE with automatic and hated it. push the pedal to the floor and there was easily a 2(ish) second lag before anything happened (both in dead stop and already moving). does the manual overcome this issue or is it the same lag? OR did the tester I drove have an issue??? I also test drove a Passat R-line and as soon as I touched the gas there was power with no lag. I like the extra features on the Jetta SE but that gap in power really made me not like the car. Any other Jetta automatic owners have this issue?

    • @jawaring
      @jawaring 7 років тому +3

      fun times with Tom The 5-speed is definitely better. I drove an auto as a rental car and it drove as you experienced above, lots of turbo lag and I didn't like it at all. Test drove a 5spd when I got home and bought one I liked it so much.

    • @funtimeswithtom4108
      @funtimeswithtom4108 7 років тому

      jawaring thanx for the response. watching this video I noticed no turbo lag when he hit the gas but during my test drive it was horrible. I did like the options available in the Jetta SE but the turbo lag was a deal breaker. maybe I should see if they have a 1.4 turbo with stick, I might like it.

    Our UK Jetta GT's have have 225/45 tyres on 17" (plus factory sports suspension lower/stiffer by considerable amount halfway between SE and GLI/GTI) that suspension/wheels option a lot of extra grip/handling to the Jetta (sadly GT is top spec in the UK and no GLI or 1.8TSI option).

    cool car and thanks for the great review... but ur redlining and flooring every gear... which is cool with me. i drive like that too. however, i wanted to see the normal driveability in normal driving situations. i wanted to see if this engine has enough low and mid-range power and torque so that it doesnt need to be wound up all the way. does this car really need to be revved high in order to keep up with traffic?
    my current car (17 years old) isnt "fast" by modern standards at all, however, it has a good amount of low end torque and i can shift gears at 2k and sometimes 1800rpm around town. if i want to drive in a spirited fashion, shifting at 3k is enough and shifting at 4k puts me ahead of most cars. btw its a gasser not a diesel, lol.
    a toyota corolla in comparison, at least the ones that i had the unfortunate opportunity to drive, i had to wind it out at 3k or above just to keep up. i dont want a toyota corolla or a car like the corolla. getting a jetta to me means, german engineering, great quality, fun to drive, nice interior, comfortable seats, sexy looks, practical, decent power (doesnt need to be the fastest car in the world), excellent driving feel, excellent driving experience.... all of which a corolla doesnt offer and to me, neither does a civic. i drove a jetta 1.8T MK6 for an extended amount of time and i loved it. i owned a mk5 jetta 2.5 and a mk6 jetta 2.5 and those were great fun as well. i wonder if this little 1.4T can keep up.
    also, i'm not considering an automatic transmission either, even tho i know it gives an extra gear which is handy for hwy cruising. so thanks for reviewing a manual jetta 1.4T.
    thanks for reading my long post.. if u got this far, i'd really appreciate any advice. thanks

      mujjuman I️ have the car in automatic. Believe me you don’t need to ring it out to keep up with traffic. Turbo helps it get good torque at low rpms and from about 2500-4500 is where it pulls really nice for an economy car. Hope this helps car is definitely worth although if I️ could get it again I️ would go for the 5 speed manual

      'man, you make a good point (about the 5M). Mine is trying like hell to replace my (VW buyback) late JSW TDI 6M. So far it's doing so (getting about 90% of the diesel's MPG. Smooth and efficient - clutch/5M. Brakes good also.

      once you pass like 4400 it feels slow(but quick for its class) because it is low horsepower (150), but before that it feels quicker than what you would expect from a car in this price range.

  • @davidaustin4407
    @davidaustin4407 7 років тому +6

    150hp seems kinda low nowadays. I bet the 1.8L is alot more fun. I used to own one of the Jetta GLX VR6 back in the 90s and it was fun but broke down on me twice. I cant go VW anymore
