- Today, I had the absolute pleasure of reviewing a 2007 BMW E63 M6 powered by the legendary S85 V10 engine. This car put a smile on my face throughout every single pull, and taking it through some SoCal canyon roads on a cool, winter day made for a very memorable experience. The exhaust sound and induction note produced by this car is nothing short of breathtaking. It feels so special, so bespoke, and it truly is a one of a kind BMW. I hope you enjoyed this review and as always please make sure to smash the like button and subscribe if you're new to the channel!

Savage Shifts 👍
haha the upshifts from the SMG are ruthless!
Might be nice a few times but if you lift the pedal just short while shifting, it‘s smooth. Shifting like that is exactly how you ruin your clutch after a few months... Still have my first clutch at 140000km while others complain that it‘s gone after 30000km. SMG is not an automatic, it‘s an automated manual...
@@striezlmuc no, its exactly the opposite, the clutch wears with slip, and smg is designed to change gears without lifting the throotle. If you lift it your actually wearing it faster
@@st_f0lk582 sorry, but that‘s not true either! Yes, the clutch wears with slip. But derived from Formula 1, the SMG is also designed for shift performance. If you set it for fast shifts, it needs to find a compromise and will only reduce your engine RPM electronically as late as possible which results in different revs between engine and drive train for the sake of longer acceleration. No matter how quick it shifts - hard shifts that kick in your back are caused by different speeds of engine and drive train and result in wear. If you lift the throttle just short, you help to rev match and reduce slip = lower wear.
Guess 140000 km on my SMG speak for themselves as well as the fact that I never had to change any clutch on any of my manual shifted cars...
I simply love the M6... I've had it for over 6 years now and I'm not even close to feeling tired of it... it's a keeper...
I still don't understand how my driver's license (or I) survived owning this car. I was such a fucking menace, hitting 110+ every day and passing everything in sight all in mountain roads. It truly feels like a video game. Going square on the tire sizes is very much worth it on this car, btw!
I own 2008 of this beast...best car I ever owned. people trashing this just dont know the value. been driving this for 7 years now and the experience has been amazing.
it's an incredible machine. Truly a special car that won't ever be produced again by BMW
How's reliability ...after 7 years interested in 2nd hand
You give me hope
with you bro Ive owned an m6 for many years, best car I've had. i sold my audi rs4, m3 v8 and other cars in the past and I still keep my e63. Reputation is bs and reliability is an easy fix, unless you're broke.
All you said here was a serious UNDERSTATEMENT!
Such an incredible car. One day soon...
Hell yea man, it was an utter blast to drive
I believe in you.......
Jesus those pulls looked violent! great review and great production quality 👌🏼
They were! Thanks so much for the feedback 🤟🏼
Wow! Great job describing the experience. Looks fun!
Just bought my second one, it’s a best kept secret.
Glad to see someone not completely trashing on this car lol. Love my e63 M6 def a overlooked car due to negative reliability connotations.
I always saw so much hate being thrown at this car, and the vast majority of it was from people who had never even driven one, let alone owned one 😂 I hope my review helped to do this car justice
S85 GANG!
@@SimplyCarThings Thank you from breaking away from the old cliches. Original takes are so rare it's awesome to hear a real take from someone that is more interested in the drive than what forum bros have to say. I'm used to being an owner of one of the forgotten ///M cars but it is nice to occasionally hear from someone outside of the community.
I've owned a lot of very fast cars, a few faster cars but my e63 ///M6 is the only one that for YEARS has never failed to make me smile when I take her out for a ride.
I want one so bad ive been dreaming of this car since 14 and i have to buy one soon cuz of the prices are going up alot
Just found this channel and this review is epic, good job!!!
thanks man, really glad you enjoyed it! I have more reviews in the works too
Thank you, thank you, thank you for being one of the few videos on all of UA-cam that is actually in the SMGIII's top shift speed. Soooo many people think S5 is the best the SMGIII is capable of and use that as part of their reason for shitting on it.
Amazing vid as always man !!!
Glad you enjoyed it man!!
Loved this video bro nice new editing layout for the video super cool. Made it more interesting
Glad to hear it my guy! Thanks for watching the video as always :)
Great content! Focusing on the good aspects of a car that is known to have a couple issues is refreshing. I believe it would add value to the video to discuss some of the common issues with the platform and typical costs to fix them. Sometimes it’s not as bad as people think!
Thank you so much! I agree, I think i'm going to touch base with the owner and make a separate video focusing on the S85 common issues and fixes
You should have done a review on my Supercharged M6 I'm located in northern Cali. ..great video. Car is beautiful
I had a chance to get my hands on one, but I already bought an M4 earlier this year. Sounds great!
Sounds like a mini explosion takes place at every gear shift🤣
For real! I loved it haha
because there is mini explosions going on in that engine :)
It is a combustion engine so...
Awesome review bro, couldn't agree more after 3 years of ownership of one of these. They are a nightmare to launch though lol
Which SMGIII tune do you have? The euro tune is a much better launch.
Automotive history - almost pulled the trigger on one of these a few months ago - I think I will at some point next year.
Just do it
It's worth it, roll the dice and pass it on before it blows up on you! This was a dream car I never thought I'd own, but they got cheap. Very glad to be onto something even faster yet bulletproof now!
I’ve owned the M5 V10 for three years and I’m so glad I bought this car ( 2007 LCI model) ... before I purchased the car I have to admit that I to was put of by quotes of how unreliable it was ... I was such a fool to listen to these armchair scaremongers as it’s been the most reliable car I’ve owned in years what a rush to drive , please don’t listen to the idiots that quote rubbish about this car as firstly most have never even driven one let alone owned one just make sure you search the history by that I mean don’t buy a lemon , what your looking for is FBMW SH and genuine parts fitted ... since I’ve owned it I’ve noticed how their slowly creeping up in price here in the U.K. 🇬🇧👍😎
PS: preventive maintenance... throttle actuators and the main one is rod bearings with vanos pipe at the same time , I’ve had the throttle actuators changed nearly two years ago next is the big one the rod bearings which is a must especially as I’m keeping this car for good , I use the car as a weekend toy only and wouldn’t recommend as a daily runner , the most important point to mention is always warm the engine and gearbox to temperature and keep the revs below 3k in the process if you follow this advice it will run for years with the usual services of course , the oil I use is 10w-60 Castrol edge which is the recommended one by Bmw .. I’ve heard of some owners using 5w-40 which is thinner , I personally wouldn’t use this plus I’ve spoke to M mechanics in the past that don’t recommend either , all in all this is a high performance 5 litre 500 bhp car that needs looking after so forget it if your one of these drivers that buys a car and hates spending money when it goes wrong because it’s not cheap to run but compared to an old Ferrari or Lamborghini with similar stats it’s dirt cheap... enjoy 😉
Forgot to mention “ do not fit cheap Chinese parts as they will fail “ 👍
those SMG shifts are brutal! gotta love a NA V10
Absolutely! An unforgettable experience in my opinion
Total abuse of the clutch - you can do it but that‘s not the right way to shift the SMG. Staying on full throttle while shifting manually is like having your gas out of sync and letting the clutch slap back while shifting a manual.
@@striezlmuc That's not true man, SMG III in the E63 is much different than any previous iteration of BMW's automated manual gearbox. And with the traction disabled allowing you to unlock the final shift setting, banging through gears at WOT is incredible and the car can handle it. 53,000 miles on this example and still on the original clutch
@@SimplyCarThings sure it can handle it, question is for how long... Accelerating hard, I sometimes let it also shift that way. So don‘t get me wrong: nothing wrong about it. But no one can tell me that the gearbox will last as long as some SMG that you handle with care and in a more gentle way.
Speaking of my 2010 E63 M6 with the SMG III, my one had no issues for 85k miles so far. But I can‘t stand reading comments under most of such videos how unreliable the S85 engine or SMG are. It‘s like drifting around each possible corner and complain how fast the tires are gone 😉
@@striezlmuc Oh it'll last longer if you baby it? Thanks for that brilliant insight disguised as a knowledgeable criticism. 🙄 Shifting without lifting is literally the entire point of paddle shifting.
Can’t beat the sound of a v10 Omar awesome 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
Indeed! Thank you very much!
I own one of these M6s and have to say I couldn't agree more with what the reviewer is saying about them, excellent review!! I do want to clarify one thing. The SMG transmission is a manual with a high speed automated single clutch and integrated electronic shifter. When you drive a traditional manual transmission with a clutch you have to let up on the gas for a moment between shifts so as not to slip/burn the clutch. Remember you are trying to match the transmission speed with the engine speed when you disengage the clutch. The same is true with the SMG, with normal everyday driving you have to let up ever so slightly to hold the engine speed between shifts to achieve a smooth shift. The faster the shift speed the lighter and shorter the duration of the pedal relief. The story is different when you are in M mode and the transmission set to the fastest setting, you just hold on for the millisecond of the shift. The reason being when your in the upper M configured RPM range everything is so quick the shift is seamless.
Under normal driving conditions, If you are accelerating and shifting you will likely feel it bang into gear. It happens just the same way it would with a manual, the engine is revving up, you engage the clutch, when the clutch is engaged the revs climb faster than the transmission speed, you drop the clutch and the clutch has to absorb the energy of the higher engine RPM and sends a jolt through the transmission, to the car and on to you in the seat. The more you do this, obviously the shorter the clutch and transmission life. It is not as forgiving as a double clutch transmission. You have to learn how to drive it, to drive it well. One last thing, when you downshift the SMG transmission at higher engine speed, it blips the throttle to rev match the engine and transmission speeds which the reviewer points out and you hear a number of times during the review
All this said SMG cars are some of the most fun to drive. You have to have some experience driving a manual to understand and feel what the transmission is doing. If you have the opportunity to own or drive a E63 M6 with S85 V10 engine and SMG transmission, I am sure you will agree the combination is unlike any other car on the road. It rewards your senses in ways no other car can, it is truly addicting. BMW's golden age of naturally asperated M cars are some of the best driving machines ever made!!! With Electric and Hybrid cars of the future coming in all configs and performance levels it is safe to say there will never be another E63-S85. Grab one if you can!!!
Well said! I have complied and purchased one with 58k miles. Now it's time for preventative maintenance - I'm scheduled for rod bearing replacement/new engine mounts/VANOS oil line, VANOS pump replacement, and throttle actuator replacement.
I never feel this sudden bang(slam into gear) into gears on mine in normal driving when it's on 1-5 shift setting. It's pretty very smooth if even if it seems a bit sluggish.
Should this be a concern? Thanks!
@@tonycapil1022 same question, doesnt make sense to let off the gas when shifting
I'm sorry if I caused some confusion. When I say let up on the gas. That pharsing may conjure a more extreme action than I mean to suggest. Think of it this way, when you are accelerating, you push the gas pedal down to open the throttle body that intern provide the metered about of fuel for the position of the plenum. The result is the car accelerates up to the speed of the engine set by the throttle body. When the driver shifts gears he is switching to a higher gear that requires less RPM to maintain the speed the car was traveling at when the gear change was initiated. The clutch slips to accommodate the difference in speed, granted the momentum of the acceleration will push the car to a higher speed will minimize the slippage. pul . The SMG transmission is designed to provide the driver with many settings for the driving style they intend to use. If your going to drive it hard and shift at high rpms. Set the shift change speed high to the fifth bar with DSC on and 6th bar in M mode with the DSC off for the fastest shifts and you will not get the lurches you see in the video. Drive hard at a slow shift speed and you will. When you start the car in non-M mode SMG defaults to shift speed 3, the default setting for the auto drive mode. While most of the videos you see of folks driving M6s is pretty much flat out with the V10 screaming out. While many of us owners enjoy exercising our M6s most of the time we have to drive them in a more civilized manner. Thanks to sticking with me to get to this point about letting up on the gas pedal.
When driving in a less aggressive manner you accelerate slowly and when you shift, you move your foot up ever so slightly to almost hold the RPM you shifted at then once the gear change is made apply the gas to continue the acceleration. This technique allow the car to increase its speed to accommodate the speed the gear is to run at the given RPM. Using the process I have glass smooth shifts with my SMG and you can too.
a beast that puts a smile on the face
Indeed, smiles per gallon
I have the Same 2007 M6 and love it.
Buying one Saturday can’t wait!!!
How is it?
Mean machine. Love it👍
Thanks Steven! It definitely was a riot
I have the same car 2008 in Alpinwhite with 22inch Breyton Wheels.....i love this car
Sheesh those are some massive wheels for this car! sounds like a cool spec :)
Awesome video. I have a question when you change gears with the paddles do you let off on the gas a bit?
at wide open throttle my foot was pressed on the pedal (no lifting off to get the quickest shift), but with partial throttle it helps to let off a little for a smoother gear change
This is the one of the best cars to own in the price range. If you can get a clean example with low miles set aside 5-6k for the maintenance items and you will end up with a very reliable, rare and fun car.
video quality fire
Thank you so much!
Amazing review, was in love with this car from the time it came out in 2007😻😻 I have a 2010 e64 M6 (convertible) with 30 000km. Out of interest sake, should I sell or keep?
Sell and get v10
Enjoyed the review. I own a 2007 M6 and I have the same experience every time I take mine out for a drive with the exception that mine is a 6 speed manual trans. Unreal V10 experience.
Glad you liked it, thank you! I can only imagine with a 6 speed how fun its gotta be
I cannot explain the feeling of flooring the M6, that SMG trans shift is AMAZING! I almost had an orgasm driving that beast 😩
Goose bumps
For real!
bought a 2008 a few months ago.....so far a great car
congrats man!
Hey great video man! I see one of these right now with only 37k miles for $21k! I test drove a couple of these and fell in love. They’re truly addicting, special cars that’ll be harder to find in the future.
Just one question though. Upon examining the carfax for this M6 I just mentioned, I noticed it literally hasn’t even been maintained throughout its life! Like legit, not even one oil change shows up on the maintenance records on the carfax. I really want to get the car, but I’m concerned I’ll be the one to bite the bullet on super expensive repairs and I’ll potentially have a money pit on my hands due to neglect from the previous owners. What do you think? Should I pull the trigger and get it?
No, you can if you want tho. Not even one oil change is horrific assuming. You want to get the right one they’re for you want one that has service records. Just be patient the right one will pop out .
37K miles for only $21K is very suspect. Especially with no maintenance records. It should’ve at least visited the dealership twice for an oil change unless the owner changed the oil at home. The thick 10w60 oil will deteriorate easily and clump up overtime especially if it hasn’t been changed often. This will eventually affect the entire VANOS system, oil pump, and ultimately the rod bearings. I would steer clear unless you get a thorough PPI, oil analysis, and plan on changing the rod bearings after you buy the car. I would also flush the PS fluid, drain the differential fluid, and the SMG transmission fluid.
Also, if the previous owner really neglected to change the oil, I highly doubt the owner followed the break in procedure for the first 1,200-1,500 miles. Or worse case scenario, started up the car and drove it to redline before the oil temp reached 210F.
The best engine and exhaust in the world!
it’s up there with the greats!
I bought one a week ago. It's amazing. Too much negativity with the SMG gearbox.
Cool...
I have mine in black and it's the 08 one. I'm so glad the 1st owner got the complete package when he purchased it lol. Cause now I'm enjoying it!
That’s so true, that smg feels automatic
Anyone know what exhaust it is?
Just bought one. What an experience! Bought to enjoy on weekends. But hell I drive it everyday. Too much fun!!
I have a 2007 e64 and have done some work to it. It is an absolute beast. I believe it will be a classic in 6 years. Those who shit on these cars have no idea wtf they’re talking about.
Bingo.
I almost bought one. Everyday I look at them. I’m just too afraid of the rod bearing issue. Is there anyway to make these bulletproof?
yea you can have the rod bearings preventatively replaced along with a few other services. Although the owner of this M6 has owned his for over a year now with zero issues
So what about that S85 M1 combo now? think they'd sell any🤣🍻
Stock exhaust?
Still want one ..
Well worth it!
I think your addicted now 🤣 can't help that bro It's completely on another level.
I definitely am addicted man 😂 thanks for watching
These will lose to an F80 M3 but the sound of the S85 is so addicting it doesn’t matter. The F series M cars are all around superior in terms of handling and performance but there’s nothing quite like the rawness and the sound of the S85 V10. You can always put money into the motor and get a stroker build from Troy Jeup to get about 600+ whp which will easily hang with the F90 M5.
One of the best sounding exhausts for sure. You look addicted lol
I definitely was lol. Had to force myself to not do a pull every second 🤣
If you put it in automatic mode it shifts insane on its own as well v 10 sound is like no other
You almost had me thinking the smg in my M6 was actually good. Nice job 👍
it's not bad during WOT, but any other time it really is sluggish haha
@@SimplyCarThings love my M6 tho. Great vid.
Those shiftsssss at the start damnnn 😂
Bro i was shocked at how hard the shifts were 😂 More people need to experience that
If I'm not wrong I think this spec right here you're driving is the last year of the V10 M6
Last year was 2010
2010 Lci e63 is better looking in my opinion slightly better upgrade headlights and navigation also ecu
@@bmw-rebuilder-8639 yep, i hv an '08 w a 6 spd, i like the lci better as well but mine doesnt hv the updated navi... that came in early 09

@@bmw-rebuilder-8639 i also hv a frozen rear break caliper... so new rears will be done this spring. Unfort i hvnt had a ton of time to drive it rexently so sht like this will happen, 46k miles
Do have to say though you never know many bmw might be cookin up a brand new v10 and bring it to production in the next 5 years 🤷🏼♂️
Unless it’s a concept car, I highly doubt it. With the EV market so hot right now and fuel economy becoming one of the most deciding factors in buying a car for the broad consumer market, a NA V10 just doesn’t make business sense. Turbos and smaller displacement engines achieve more horsepower per liter and torque while simultaneously reducing weight and increasing fuel efficiency. Even if BMW produced, let’s say, a 5.2 or 6.0L V10 with a 12:1 compression ratio producing 600hp and 400+ lb/ft of torque, it would still be slower than the F90 M5 and probably have worse fuel economy than the S85 5.0L motor.
Even Formula 1 scraped V10 and V8 engines for turbo V6s because of the power generated per liter while maximizing fuel efficiency. I wouldn’t be surprised if F1 cars become all electric within the next 10 years. As lame as it sounds, pun intended, F1 races could be almost silent.

SHEESHHH v10 POWAAAA
yessssssir 🔥
I believe you're supposed to (technically) let off the gas when you paddle shift just like you would on a MT. **Someone please correct me if Im wrong**
Not with SMG III, the older variants yes that was the case. But on the M6 you can keep the pedal floored through upshifts, downshifts rev match as well without blipping the throttle
Whenever the repair bill gets ridiculous, I find myself back here.
Ah miss my e60 M5, miss that sound and power but not the gas bill or headaches. Its a great short term car to have but never keep one of these long term.
The M6 handles a lot better than the E60 M5, it’s nearly as fast as an E9X M3 around a track.
No it doesn't. I've had both the M6 and now the M5 and the difference in handling is minimal at best.
I believe it! The lower center of gravity actually made the car feel more agile than I was expecting
I do enjoy the shorter wheel base on the M6 it does make the car more nimble. Ive achieved pretty close lap times between the two cars when I have taken both the m5 and the m6 but the m6 now is faster due to weight reduction and more experience on track with it. The lower center of gravity is pretty nice
Nice V10 sound, check our M6 Coupe meets M6 Cabrio video as well. Thumbs up. 👍🔥🔥
Utterly beautiful car..The ‘want’ is real! For now I have to pretend with my daily E63 630i M Sport 🙈
Can't agree on the NA motors being more responsive, sure you're not waiting on the turbo to make the power but you're waiting longer on the revs to make the power. BMW turbo motors with their max torque at 1,500 rpm range or so are more responsive in my mind even with the initial hesitation. Not only that but you're making more power all things being equal. Sound is the only downside of turbos in my opinion.
I agree that BMW turbo engines are actually quite responsive for a “turbocharged motor” such as the S55 & B58. But i still haven’t experienced anything that replicates the feel of the N/A ones, especially the S85/S65/S54 with ITB’s is incredible. the amount of precision you have with the pedal and the instantaneous surge in RPM are what i particularly noticed.
@@SimplyCarThings I suppose immediate precision is better in an NA motor hard to argue that. I do believe that turbos are in fact the better way all the same. I guess the car world won't let us pick either way...
i have a manual! 😎 love it! if you take care of it, it will take care of you.
Just out of curiosity why don’t u buy a manual car? Seems like every car you’ve had is an auto 😢
I made a video recently about this exact question 😁 Feel free to check it out it’s on my channel a few videos back
12 MPG ! YAAAAAAS ! LOL
I clicked on this so fast lol
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great spec but very hard to find this tier car with low mileage...
Ngl I’m in the market for an E60 6 speed
I think you’ll love it. I never realized how much i enjoyed it all until I drove it
It’s the v10 for me chief
yesssir, cannot go wrong with an engine like that
I own a 2002 M3 6MT and a 2020 M2C DCT. I haven't driven an M5 or M6, but I agree the sound of the engine is amazing. However, I've driven an E46 M3 with SMG and I could not stand it. The M5/M6 S85 coupled with a modern DCT would be amazing. For me, this car represents almost the worst of the Bangle era, second only to the 7 series, which I think is one of the ugliest BMWs ever. I find front end of the E63 to be just ugly, but the back end is fcuking hideous. I can't stand it.
I agree with about 85% of what you say. The other 5%? To me, the E63 M6 is butt ugly, so....I own two E60 M5's...one slightly modified, the other not
God bless: repent, trust, and believe in Jesus and be saved. There’s trouble in the World but Jesus has overcome it. Trust in Him and be truly set free. Free from the troubles, pains, and desires of this world. Even those things that you secretly justify even when they’re wrong, you can be set free from. Through God’s Word you will become new, not being bound to your wrong doings. May this message fill your heart, there may still be struggles, but now with God you have help and hope, from God, who knows all things. May God bless you and may you be filled with love.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
I love everything about this car, EXCEPT the front end and bumper is ugly as hell!!!!! Man, if they did something better with those front lights and bumper, this car would have been so much more popular. But it's butt ugly from the front. Everything else is awesome!!!
Most overrated car ever lol
A true 200+ mph car... yeah so overrated
@@bjones1899 ye lol big deal you ain’t never gonna have room to hit 200mph anywhere but you know enjoy the maintenance.
@@daboss9889 theres maintenance that should be done on any car, on this one its a must and the car will be as reliable as any other car. If you stay in one city and never go out of it I guess there's no room. Otherwise there's many places to get it there
You're overrated. Whatever you own will never sound better than this legendary V10.
Overrated? The f you talking about? Only thing you ever hear are people (who don’t know shit about what they’re talking about) crapping all over this car. I have a 2007 e64 and it’s my favorite car to drive. I currently have and have had numerous cars that are actually overrated. This one puts a huge smile on my face everytime I start it and hear that v10 through my Eisenmann race exhaust and drop the top. You want to talk about maintenance, let’s talk about a V12 SL500.
Call me a hater but I never liked the way those V10's sounded. I don't understand why people love these motors. They're unreliable and not fast by today's standards. I'm thinking its the V10 that lures people in.
I would just say reserve your judgements until you get the opportunity to drive one :) It’s easy to hate on the car, but it has many redeeming qualities
@@SimplyCarThings I almost bought one haha. N/A motors at like 800 are insane. I also like the torque which it doesn't have.

@@Biggus_Dickus_69 Cool story bro.
Worst motor ever. German youtuber just bought a M5 US-import and its engine failed on the way home. Overall it has so bad reputation.
Wow. One UA-camr had an issue. They must all be shit cars. As an owner of a 2007 e64 with the s85 motor I will say, yea nah.
A lot of missing info bud. Mileage, upkeep, history etc. One "reported" lemon and the sky is falling for everybody.
