This 6-Speed V10 BMW M6 Is The Ultimate Straight-Piped M Car!

- Today we're driving one of the last great V10 sports cars ever built! This is an ultra-rare 6-speed manual E63 BMW M6. The N/A 5.0L S85 V10 was only paired with this 6-speed gearbox in 701 examples of the second generation BMW M6 and we managed to find not one, but TWO of them today to showcase here on the channel. This one we're driving today has been straight-piped but with the press of a button can be tamed down and muffled into stealth mode. A brilliant feature. Enjoy!

FYI M6 Coupes weigh under 3800 pounds. I don't know why everyone thinks they weigh more than they do. I own a manual one myself. I've also seen owners pull weight from it and get it under 3500 pounds. Another misconception is its reliability. While yes, it can be troublesome and very expensive, this is just the reality of owning a V10 and shouldn't be compared to the ownership of an ordinary BMW. Many like to bash on it after picking up a SMG car with 50-100,000 miles for ~20,000 USD. The truth is most of these cars were beat on their entire life and they are a ticking time bomb especially if those rod bearings have never been touched. Oil changes from dealers can cost up to $400 recommended every 3,000 miles or less. Most using these as dailies won't take them in for service as often as they need to. It has 10 throttle bodies, a compression ratio of 12:1, and most are retuned aggressively. It is truly derived from the 2004 Williams-BMW f1 motor. The only production engines similar to this are the original 5.0 Gallardo and the Carrera GT. If you give it the attention that it needs, these motors run very well all considering. Fingers crossed I haven't had any issues on mine up to 41,000 miles.
I live in London, you see them parked under a tree with dirt all over them or sitting for a bit. The owners really don’t care man + thank you for the information too, going to remember that.
Thinking of selling yours )
Spot on. I have an ‘07 smg w 127k. The beast has been meticulously cared for. It runs about 2200 US dollars a year maintenance. I never track the car. It is a pure joy to experience. If you take care of these cars you will keep them forever. Lots of moving parts in the s85 but lots to behold. The best engine bmw has ever produced. Best looking bmw ascetically.
You’re absolutely correct with all that you just said! I am a proud, lucky and completely satisfied original owner of the 6-speed manual M6! I have a few other “special” M Gems in the collection but this one is absolutely very special for me and for those that know and understand the tech in this vehicle. And let’s not forget BMW’s commitment to satisfy USA costumers demands that wanted a manual but very few lucky ones actually purchased.
Same situation with the E60 M5. Everyone thinks they’re heavy as a tank when they only way about 4050lbs…Much lighter than a Benz and that’s about 400lbs. lighter than the newer edition 2-door M6 coupe…The SMGIII transmission is truly an awesome trans if you know how to drive it correctly. The shifts are blistering fast at 8250 RPM and chirps the tires in 4th gear at 103 MPH. My Interlagos Blue M5 only has 33k miles so she’s got plenty on life left in her and it’s such a nostalgic experience every time I walk in the garage. Hopefully I can find a matching E63 M6 with similar mileage and a manual trans one day!
BMW´s with stickshift is just the dream
Can't agree more
I wish I could afford a e39 m5 right now. But really loved the smg cars while they are running. The m5 and m6 was meant for the smg but sucked the reliability blew.
kia makes better manuals
My perfect spec, i always wanted a V10 M6 in Interlagos Blue with three pedals
Make your dream come true one day bud. And before you go old and think: "Oh heck, should have done that when I was younger" :-)
Love the channel, keep up the great work Glenn!
@@devondefilippi8447 thank you, I appreciate the support!
One of the greatest engines ever!! I own the M5 version with the 6 speed manual as well..Never selling it!!
good on you what an amazing car
The e63/64 getting the praise it deserves. Thank you sir, and my new rod bearings thank u as well!
i upgraded the bearings asap :) making this thing bullet proof with modern tech
How much was it?
@@thegentlemansmith5411 $3k total roughly
@@thegentlemansmith5411 mine WAS 3K too
Looking at this vid again, I figured out why mine looks so much different. Eibach springs. The wheel gap makes it look less aggressive.
Not a bmw fan but this is by far the best looking car they have ever done
The 4,400 pounds you quoted is for the M5. The M6 actually is fairly light for what it is coming in at 3,770. Which is only a few hundred pounds more than the E92 M3.
The E60 M5 isn't even that heavy. Lol. It's a little over 4,000lbs. I think the weight he was suggesting was for the F10 M5.
4400 is the vert.
~300LB less with the 6 speed manual trans.
Not even the e60 m5, the vert weighs less then 4,400lbs curb weight and its the heaviest car with the s85.
Greatest sounding motor BMW ever made. The S85 is a legend🤌🏼
BMW V10 Symphony
I couldn't skip a second, because I didn't want to miss any of these amazing exhaust sounds. Entertaining cut!
To clear up the information, only 323 manual M6 cars (~1500 E60 M5s) of the E63 generation were produced. The looks have aged exceptionally well and will continue to do so. In 10-20 years it will rise as one of the best and most sought after BMW cars of all time. Like musicians, they and their music are most appreciated after their death/time. I loved my e92 M3 and can not wait to get another as well as a manual M6. Bangle era cars are amazing and time will clearly show this.
bangle gangle
320ish hardtop e63's
but also 370ish convertible e64's
This car is literally perfect in every single possible way.....
I have a E64 M6 manual. Top down, revving up to 8,250, and bang into the next gear, it's pure nirvana!!
Same here 👌😉
I have the same car M6 6sp convertible
Especially with the CSL airbox.
same same - RETRACTABLE REAR GLASS best feature amirite!!
put that rear glass down and just hear it sing
@@lezzbmm
Do you prefer E63 M6 with manual ove E39 M5?
@@mislavkonjik2827 idk hard to say
would def take an e61 over e63 or e39,,
but ill take my e64 w its retractable rear glass any day over anything else
it's literally the only 4 seat v10 or v12 w retractable rear glass
one of very few retractable rear glass cars in general and one of even fewer w 4 seats !!
i think its beautiful. its designed so well and subtle that people dont often notice it until theyve owned one and really looked at it. this car doesnt have angles. every line flows.
BMW should have made a Z8 type car with this engine and gearbox.
naw bmw v10's are unreliable as shit thass why they stop producing them
@@lonelyboysole Yeah but on the enthusiast market that doesnt matter too much. People want something special and its fine if you need to fix stuff once in a while if you get to drive something with a real exclusive engine. Plenty of objectively shit cars go for large sums.
@@bingoberra18 isnt that why they made the m8? for the ppl who wanted something special
Yepp..
@@lonelyboysole no
It's kinda ironic how North America got the M5/M6 with a manual transmission option while the rest of us got shifted exclusively getting it with the SMG Automatic
I love my S65, but the s85 V10 sound is hard to beat 🙌
its a rare car and sounds awesome. My friend owns one and unfortunately gives him nothing but problems. I think he's lost count in the thousands he's spent maintaining it. I use to sell bmw's a while back and owned a e46 m3. Lets just say I've learned my lesson. You really need to love these cars and have no other car in mind to maintain them and have zero regrets. Although most of the owners will never admit if it was reliable and if my M3 was i would still own it, it's not just cost its time and headache you deal with and as you get older you have little patience.
Maybe I'm just lucky, but my E92 M3 hasn't had a single issue the 3 years I've have it. That said I've done my due diligence with preventative and regular maintenance.
I've read some BMW forums and this engine also in the E60 M5 has a reputation of being expensive and unreliable, even in the social circles who buy these kind of cars new. The E39 M5 is being sought after more and is more expensive to buy than the E60... for a reason.
Preventative maintenance. Service rods throttle actuators and clutch and diff along with well timed oil changes and you’ll be good !
I Had an 06 M6 for six years and didn’t have a single issue. I know there’s some issues, but the internet makes it sound worse than it is. Do the rod bearings at 100k km and you should be good.
They are certainly not a Toyota Corolla but compared to the 360 Spyder I owned before my E63 M6 they are not problematic at all.
Wow there's barely any views or comments here, how does this have so little views? Excellent content as always!
@Roads Untraveled always nails it with the audio!
Who tried to clean the dot off their screen? 😂
Great video. My daily drive is a BMW M6 Competition, and I love it!
Fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🤌🤌
I beg to differ on the looks comments in the video which is subjective. The e63 m6 is by far the best looking machine bmw has ever produced. Especially when lowered.
The S85 V10 put into an e92 M3 = perfect BMW
S85 into a E30 :D
If they produced these cars with the e92 m3 dct instead of the smg, these cars would have been received so much better. They wouldn't end up being as attainable in the used market though🤷♂️
In a e46 csl for me
Fantastic presentation of the brilliant car...
So good!
One of my all time favorite cars
There will never be anything like this vehicle and the SMG 3 is the ultimate driving experience for the S85.
sounds just like my M5.... Love it
Was a fun car back in the day. I would always do launch control. Had the SMG version however
Didnt it rape the clutch ? If u know what i mean 😁
Very nice tuck n roll
owned a e60 m5 smg and yeh they are amazing even the smg nothing else like else 2 bmws, can’t wait till I own that m6 e63 next a must own car for me and kinda cool that the internet scares everyone from them aswell hopefully means I can get one cheap and build it properly
Lexus LFA, Dodge Viper and the Lamborghini Huracan all have V10's but I totally agree with you, this v10 M6 is special.
LFA no stick, Huracan no stick,
Viper yes,
@@mr.eurocarturboit2251 we are not discussing transmissions.... my comment was directed towards his statement describing other 10 cylinder engines offered in consumer vehicles.
M6 cheapest V10 to buy and a great car... V10 is amazing sound
LFA like $1M
Even though my fastest cars are orbital autos or DCTs I still enjoy driving peppy or big torquey cars with manuals the S85 engine just doesn't pair well with a manual. BMW made the right decision with making their primary engineering focus making the best feasible semi-auto transmission at the time. With the SMGIII in S6 mode you'll find every experience in a manual e6x M car a bit lacking.
You can buy them now for under $25k with under 50k miles. What a steal
I personally don’t like the dumps off the exhaust....I love the engine but hate how the M6’s look....I’ve driven a few and they drive terrible and to me look terrible. The e60 M5 looks so much better as well as the e92 M3....my current garage has both these plus an e46 M3....I just wish this engine went into something more exotic. I also have only bought the transmission my cars were originally designed with. DCT in my e92, manual in my e46 M3, and an smg in my M5. Great content!
Just seen this car on Craigslist had to come check it out
This is for me the single hardest BMW ever produced
Beautiful sound. Some money 💰 for maintenance and im happy
These are skyrocketing in value for manuals.. so rare, so special.
No they are not. I just bought a mint m5 6 speed for 22k.
And the m6 were the same value.
@@Eidrian111 you’re a genius
@@jaypers232 thank you
@@Eidrian111 low mileage? probably not
Perfect
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR AND THAT BLUE COLOR OMG 😱 GOD BLESS THIS WORLD 🌎 !!!!
Very Nice Performante beater
Dream Car right there!
As for the transmission, nothing that an aftermarket short shifter couldn't do.
99% of car channels swoon over manuals, but buyers only buy 1% manuals I don't hate manuals, I enjoy driving them, but people (almost exclusively in America) can't seem to discuss a car with a manual trans, without acting like it's some amazing invention.
The fact that so few cars in north America are manual is exactly why it's so caught after. Enthusiasts generally prefer manuals, but because they don't sell well it's a rare feature over here.
Well between this video and Doug Demuro we better get one now bc u just raised the price on them thanks a lot lol 😂
I didn’t even know the m6 came in a v10 spec thought it was only the 2010 m5’s
BMW with no dash light now that’s rare lol.
Pre-LCI get them while there low. If anyone cares to travel there a E60 M5 (SMG) for sale in the New Orleans area on FB Marketplace for $17k. Not sure if the rod bearings have been done but that’s a smoking deal.
Side on these look special. And I'm an e46 M3 owner.
This dude lookin like a young Houston Crosta lol
This is not my favorite looking bimmer by any means but, its powertrain is amazing. I wish more cars had a V10.
May these even show up as competition sport lightweight Wit all Say Motor
Holy shit 😍😍🔥
M6 is too Beast!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Fun fact: the v8 m6 manual is more rare than the v10. I think there were like 70 made according to Doug’s video on the second gen m6
the newer the model, the less people who order it stick
I'm looking at a 2009 one right now, high miles, but damn.... 500HP !!!!
BMW homologation King
Omg that sound... it's a bit like the Lexus LFA
Nice from every angle apart from the front. I do prefer the E60 though
If you approach an owner, never mention reliability. Unless you're a therapist.
This looks immensely better than the M5
I have one of 323 in Vancouver
SRT Viper with a V10 and a manual transmission is another car in the category
16:48 the other M6 almost goes sideways xD
What diameter are the exhaust dumps
Within the Top 5 best cars I'll never own.
One of my favorite designed cars, as far as looks go. I've seen high mileage M5 manuals sell for $10k, I think manual M6's are less common tho.
Far less common took me 6 months to find mine lol
Took me a minute to find mine 57k miles
i wanted a blue one for so long, but had an opportunity for a white E64 black interior 45K miles so here are ;)
Is this by Pit Lake?
I know one of the problems is the original cat pipes. If u change it to an aftermarket one, the problems is solved
one of the 300 something is sitting in my garage :)
Hva så Rene Mammen :)
Manual 😍💯👍🏽
Which year is this one
We never got a manual m6 in UK:(
Dodge viper manual baby common !
The most slept on car I've ever owned. Put a short shift kit and the F10 knob in and it's even better.
sounds like a Huracan that V10 noise
They don’t sound the same.
It is 3700lbs not upwards of 4400lbs
Full Aston Martin Vantage Bentley CSL
Better exhaust out there...
So, did he get the free oil change? :)
Love them and love this colour. Unfortunately they're still not cheap where I live. I only have a 645ci. Maybe one day.
S85B50 WAS BUILT FOR SMG NOT FOR MANUAL THE GEARS ARE OFF WITH THE MANUAL GEARBOX
My dad used to have the smg v10 in a m6. The transmission was so terrible that we named the car “herky jerky” he ended up selling the car. Years later I now own an 07 6 speed m5 and the 3 peddles are so much better than the smg. Sure the gearing might not be completely spot on but it’s the driving experience that matters. “tHe GeArS aRe OfF wItH tHe MaNuAl GeArBoX”
@@claytonfarrow6193 the smgs are far better and if they were herky jerky it was probably your dads inability to replicate a manual car being driven the smg is very rewarding if able to drive it like a manual the 3 pedal version is fun but the SMG is novelty
I dunno, maybe he drove it in full auto, that's pretty horrible. SMG with the paddles is fun, but never driven a manual m6 so can't compare. People forget that when these came out 500 hp was unheard of outside of supercars, and it wasnt standard for supercars either. Lotus detuned their twin turbo v8's from 500 to 350 hp due to reliability concerns. V12 Ferrari 550's had 478 hp. BMW smashed it out of the ballpark.
I have an identical M6. Mine is a Manual 2007 M6 Interlagos blue with red interior and $19,000 on Dinan parts installed.
He said "big" displacement lol
that's the problem only in America they Built the hand shifter from M5 and the M6 V10 and in Germany and as a Austrian packet not!!!🤔😭
I love how it sounds chaotic and dieselish in around 800 rpm and then revs come up and it sounds like F1 from this age. ♥
Whats the mileage of this car?
They should of upgrade that engine and put it in the I8 ... and then end it... The I8 would of been a epic car
this car is very beautiful looking........ dude you tripping when you said that it's not
and i love your face expression when he goes smg is way faster lol you look sad lmaooooo
they shouldve put this engine in an i8.
Anyone get this V10 to fit in an e46 or e39? Probably a stupid question but a kid’s gotta dream 🤔
I've saw it in a e46 somewhere in youtopia.
check driftworks e46
Aye its been done several times now. All manual too
I saw on Reddit somewhere a V10 swapped E30. If it could fit in a E30, it definitely can fit in the E46/E39.

"What other V10 manual cars are there? None"

Ok, maybe right now there aren't anymore, but up until 2017 the Viper was king of the V10 NA manual monsters.
