      Thanks for the comment and compliment Donkey! We finally got the new arms installed just last night and will be re-calibrating the unit tonight. I'll use the platform for a few weeks to make sure everything is working well and then I'll film Part 3 of the series showing all our mods. We did so much custom work to get the SFU Upgrade to work to it's maximum potential, and I'm excited to share what we did. Stay tuned, there will be lots more videos coming up!

    I have the H3 and I am really considering this upgrade. I received a Email from Igor on May 9th 2022 to upgrade but I was waiting to see more reviews on the SFU and you were on my list to watch. Thx for this better in depth review more then the others I have seen. I Think in a few more months some of these small problems will get resolved then I will make my purchase. I use my platform mostly for rallying, racing, NL2, and a little flying in MSFS2020 and I am sure with maybe a little more smoothness it will be a little more immersive. Looking forward to Part 2.

      Thanks for the in depth comment GT, means a lot that you trust my opinion. It is my understanding that another benefit of the SFU upgrade for H2/H3 users is that it takes all the "play" out of the rig. I've never used one of those so not sure how big a problem that is, but considering the H3 pivots on a U-joint, I can imagine it is noticeable. That being said, I think you are right to wait as I think there are going to be some tweaks to these units down the road. Time will tell I guess.

What's so funny is when I started the channel, I didn't think anyone would ever be interested in my opinion... yet here we are getting close to 2000 Subscribers. If the channel "blows up" that would be great, but honestly as long as someone out there finds my content interesting, informative and maybe entertaining... then I am happy to continue. When you talk about the movement does the flexing on your carpet kinda help cause this issue? I would try a base of wood or something heavy.

      @GYGOtv  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the recommendation David. I don't think that is the issue because other people are seeing this problem too, and they are on solid surfaces. If we can't figure anything else out, I will try what you recommend. Appreciate the view!

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      Hi Jay, I wouldn't say the wires are being pushed into the carpet. Since they come out of the back of the motors, it is more like the wires are being picked up and set down on the carpet, there really isn't any pressure being applied to the connection. I guess time will tell, but thanks for the comment, I will keep an eye on it.

    I see that there are more degrees of movement, but it's more smoothed out, and i'm not sure if this is an advantage, since it seems less responsive? Is there a setting to make it do sharper/faster motions as well?

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      Hi Khen, yes the SRS Software has a TON of settings to play with to get the motion dialed in how you like. I would say you could consider it "less responsive" because there is more available movement (so it does take longer to go to the extremes), but realistically you are not talking much difference and if you can't A/B compare the 2 you wouldn't likely notice. I personally think DOF systems are good for 1st timers, I've got this video talking about why I chose it if you are interested ua-cam.com/video/YD8GFEptuTk/v-deo.html Hope that helps.

    For the P3/H3 can you just upgrade the two front motors, (ie not the Yaw motor)

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  3 місяці тому

      Absolutely you can. The Yaw motor doesn't need to be SFU. I do recommend to people buying a new one... If they are planning to upgrade to an H6 at some point, they might as well buy all 3 SFU's so they don't have to swap the Yaw one out when they go H6. But that doesn't really matter if you are upgrading instead of purchasing new. Thanks for the question.

Basically we install these little shelves and then bolted the keyboard to them. You probably could use velcro too for the keyboard if you don't want to do all that work, but I'd recommend you at least bolt the shelves to the rig for stability. I have affiliate links on that video too that will take you to each product. Good luck and thanks for watching our content.

      From what I understand from DOF, the P6 does not get more motion... but I'm not sure how that can be the case since you are changing the arms and in my mind it should. I would say the P motors should be able to move things faster than the H motors. If you don't mind, please report back after your install and let us know if you get more motion or not... that might definitively answer this question that I've wondered about as well.

They are the new motor mounts.The problem is, I don't have a diagram of how the hardware is supposed to be arranged. I can guess, but I'd like better detail. They didn't include any pictures of what the final assembly should look like. Also, I know that I have the mode A gearbox configuration. 4 Worm gear boxes with the armature on the right side and two with the armature on the left side. Problem is, why aren't the armatures all on the same side or does that matter? I upgraded from the H3 to the H6, so I have two controllers with the corresponding motors labeled 1,2,3. That group is a HUGE help when you run into problems and typically much faster to respond than I am... hope this all helps. As for why the gearboxes are different... I don't really know, but by looking at the arrangement it looks like they wanted to "mirror" the left and right motor configurations for some reason and my guess is they had already ordered half the gearboxes one way and half the other... so in order to work through their inventory they have 2 different modes. That is all just a guess but the best answer I can come up with. As for the motors on which gearbox, it doesn't matter they should all be the same. Hi Ryan, yes I totally understand you concern... I don't think I personally could have done the gearbox swap myself, I was so thankful to have the Master Fabricator, Darrell available to do it for me. If you haven't seen the video about that part, I encourage you to watch it here ua-cam.com/video/dRWg9C67sLE/v-deo.html after that, if you think it is something you can tackle, go for it. Otherwise, you might be able to contact DOF and see about buying 2 motors with the SFU gearboxes already attached (you don't need one for the traction loss). The gearbox swap was the hardest part, the rest I bet you could handle as far as putting them on the unit. Also from what I understand, you won't have to do the firmware upgrade on the 3 series because the motors are still positioned correctly if that helps. Good luck whatever you decide, and thanks for the comment and watching our content.

      You could be right Itistheway, and I don't agree with DOF that the gas struts are not needed, We put ours back on and seem to have found a mounting method for them that doesn't limit the motion. • @racker5108
    @racker5108 Рік тому

    interesting, so this upgrade increases the leverage for the motors, making it capable of holding more weight; but counterintuitively, has the adverse effect on the motors magnets, causing it to move easily when no power is applied.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      Hi Micheal, I think the old gearboxes kind of "locked" when powered off somehow, maybe they just had enough friction between the gears that normal gravity didn't move them. I'm not 100% sure but I do know the SFU Gears move very easily by comparison. Thanks for the observation.

  • @justaguydoinstuff
    @justaguydoinstuff Рік тому

    So can you get the SFU upgrade when you first buy the H6 without needing to change anything out? I'm now considering this instead of the Yaw2 since they have another delay until sometime next year. Are the kinks worked out at this point? My only deciding factor is the backward range of motion. I would use this only for flight sims and really want to have the feel of climbing in a jet but it doesn't look like it leans back very far. Although I do really like the surge motion this has...does it feel like it leans back far while climbing in a plane? Another great video btw!

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      I know dof were working towards all the new units having the SFU and that was the case with the P6 last time I checked, but I'm not sure where they stand with the H6. You might just email them and ask where everything stands currently (support@dofreality.com) or use the contact page on the website. As for it vs the Yaw2... So obviously the Yaw2 goes back farther BUT I wouldn't even consider a Yaw2 WITHOUT the Heave module (don't know if that is a thing yet but they did announce they were working on it). Heave is a HUGE deal to me because that is what gives you the feeling of touching down when you land. I can tell you on the Helicopter it is an amazing sensation and you feel like you just hit the ground. Also the surge is pretty cool too, especially when hitting the afterburner or doing a carrier launch. Overall I still wish the H6 went back a little more, but I don't know if I'd trade those extra dof axis just for that. It's a tough call to be sure. The best thing about the H6 is with the SFU, you can get the unit to move as much as possible with the geometry of the motion platform, in other words the rig will hit itself before it actually runs out of movement in most cases. I'm close to doing my Part 3 because I think we finally have all the bugs worked out now so watch for that video and I think it will answer more of your questions. I don't know how much this helped, but hopefully a little. Stay tuned for the new video coming soon.

      @@GYGOtv Thanks for the detailed reply. Ya, the heave and surge look pretty great. Yaw2 did have a heave module in the works, but they're having a tough time getting the base models out at this point so the heave module is anyone's guess if it will even materialize. I love the yaw2 company and really hope they can get their issues sorted, but if not I think this would be a great alternative.

      @@justaguydoinstuff I think it really depends on if you prioritize the back motion or having a full 6dof rig. The only other thing I was concerned with on the Yaw2 was it might be a little cumbersome to get all the controls mounted AND still have easy access to the rig. Kind of looks like you need to climb in and then you will swing the controls into place and to me that means they will be a little loose when using. I don't know for sure but that is what I'd be concerned with. I can tell you we also dialed about a negative 2 degrees into the seat itself to help with the back motion. The way my rig is set up now it has about a -10 degrees of pitch going back (-12 if you count the chair angle). Hope that helps.

      @@GYGOtv Yaw actually has a new center desk mount option that makes it really easy to get in and out now. It's actually their main desk mount solution at the moment and the old version is an option. I do really like the range of motion of the yaw2 but even though I'm a kickstarter backer it looks like they won't be able to send for quite a while. I'm really rooting for them but am starting to look at backup options. Does the P version have a larger pitch range? On their website it looks like it's listed as 25 degrees vs 17 for the H version. That being said, I don't know if an extra 3 grand is worth that extra range of motion, lol.

      @@justaguydoinstuff Well I can tell you with the new SFU gears, you can move this thing far enough to hit itself. DOF said the P motors don't really change anything as far as motion goes but they can react quicker and are stronger. Not sure you would notice because this thing moves pretty quick as is. I can tell you I think those degrees listed are estimates because my original H6 only did about 12 degrees total, not 17. I will tell you, you will need to add some form of Motion Compensation with either the Yaw2 or the DOF, it moves enough to be distracting without it. We are working on that very issue now and will also have a video of it once we figure it all out.

    Hi, thanks for the video! I am looking at the H2 to use in MSFS. Have a couple questions. I am in the USA.
    1 - Is this hard to put together?
    2 - More so is it hard to SET UP and get working?
    3 - Seeing that I'm just looking at the H2, do you think the SFU is still worthwhile?
    4 - Will this fit through a doorway after assembly?
    5 - How much room do I need for the unit as it is going to be hooked up to my computer that I use for more than just MSFS.
    6 - Is an Intel I7 - 32gb ram - 1tb nvme ssd - RTX 3070 GPU going to be able to run this ok?
    Thank you!!

      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      Hi Steve, thanks for the questions... I'll do my best to answer but keep in mind I've never owned an H2 or H3 and my H6 is different from those units. I'd highly recommend you join the DOF Reality Builders facebook group as well facebook.com/groups/1858593921047822 they are a great community that can also answer your questions.
      1 - Is this hard to put together? The biggest challenge is the assembly instructions are not always clear on the DOF Reality units so that is where the facebook group I mentioned can help. If you have the ability to do basic maintenance on your car or home you should be fine building this unit. Its a little more complicated than building something from IKEA but not much more.
      2 - More so is it hard to SET UP and get working? Not too bad but certainly not plug and play. You will likely need to do some troubleshooting so you will want a little tech skill in that. I think they are using new encoders so the whole calibration system is automated now from my understanding but you might want to double check that if you order one.
      3 - Seeing that I'm just looking at the H2, do you think the SFU is still worthwhile? This is an easy one to answer YES YES YES! The SFU gears take away the issue of the old gearboxes with the gear lash where there was a "loose" feeling sometimes when moving. I personally think the SFU gears are even more important on the H2/H3 than even the H6.
      4 - Will this fit through a doorway after assembly? The footprint is listed as 3ft. by 5ft, so dimensionally no way, it is also over 300lbs when assembled. You could probably do a partial disassembly and make it work if you had to.
      5 - How much room do I need for the unit as it is going to be hooked up to my computer that I use for more than just MSFS. I'd say about 4ft by 6ft space to account for the movement. A little more to be safe if possible.
      6 - Is an Intel I7 - 32gb ram - 1tb nvme ssd - RTX 3070 GPU going to be able to run this ok? Yes that should be fine, The motion software itself is not very demanding... leave that for the games and VR if you do that.
      Hope that helps, good luck!

      Yep, the P3/H3 series doesn't need the firmware upgrade. The P6/H6 Upgrade requires that we flip 3 of the motors around on the new design so you have to change the polarity in the plug and then do the firmware upgrade to make it move correctly. Thank you for giving us some feedback on the upgrade results for the P3... I tried to go the WITMotion route but never could get the platform to work when that sensor was enabled in SRS and passed all the tests. If you ever find a good solution, do let me know! For now I am going to go back to monitor/2D gaming and just incorporate it as part of the rig vs a big screen in front of it. Hopefully by the time the 4090 comes out I can revisit VR and see if I can find a better solution. I do need something that's a bit more permanent than taping a controller to the rig. You didn't mention what game you play but I get decent framerates with good graphics with my 3080ti/5900 in DCS and it is not optimized at all so I would think you could do it with any title. The biggest mistake I see most people make with VR is they do too much oversampling which just RUINS performance. You might try lowering your sample rate and see if that doesn't get you where you want to be. I always say get all the graphics set to where you want with the oversampling turned way down... then start turning it up slowly as the last step to get the performance that is acceptable. Hope this might help. Also what headset are you using? I'll be trying the WITMotion option too so we will see if I can get it to work. Stay tuned.
