There is no place like Panthertown! Let me know your Ptown stories - especially if they involve bears

Great trail review Layne. I live 5 miles away on the shores of Lake Glenville and look forward to backpacking and exploring the valley this year. What an amazing area.

Thanks for the love James! You’ll have a great time, especially if you’re already familiar with the Ptown system from day hikes. I’d be interested in hearing how your 4 day adventure goes!

Wow, what a cool place! I've never heard of alpine bogs or sand beaches on a mountain. I really liked the talking parts, too. My favorite hiking tip was Michael's - the best piece of equipment you have is between your ears.

Ptown is a unique area for sure. Hate that you weren’t able to make it with us on this one, hopefully next time. I loved Michael’s tip as well - very insightful.

The real star of the show! Although when he is behind the camera we don’t see those thighs

Excellent tips, and a nice dog photobomb! Those waterfalls were gorgeous; I love the water cascading down the granite. One day I'll have to show you the NM scenery in person!
Great quote towards the end. Definitely as the pandemic has inspired a lot of people to get outside and as Instagram and other social media sites attract people to really beautiful places, once isolated places can become popular and well-loved, to put it mildly. It's a double-edge sword in NM that a lot of areas see little trail maintenance and we have a low population density, because it means there are a slew of beautiful places that see visitation on the order of dozens of people a year. However, even here there are some trails that I have just about sworn off because they are so busy. But I have to remind myself that I was once that person who was "crowding the trail" in the busiest areas.

That dog did more than photobomb us, she took 2 huge dumps in our campsite. Thanks for the original tag we had fun with it. I look forward to that day for sure!
I can only speak for NC but in my lifetime the population of this state has increased by about 4 million people. We can bury our heads in the sand and pretend like our outdoor spaces aren’t going to be more heavily used or we can try to show people the right way to do things and share the love that we have for our special areas. To me the choice is simple.

I've never really felt comfortable leaving my gear/camp set up all day while day hiking. Is that area so lightly traveled that it's safe to do?

It's up to personal comfort level. Campsite 1 was more off the beaten path, Campsite 2 was definitely higher traffic
