The fuel consumption at 37 is simply just wrong. I have a 420d and mixed urban and local driving is running at 52 mpg. When you picked up the car you should have reset the trip. I suspect the dealer car would be just urban test drives.

the channel is UK production, so it's 37 imp. gallons. that's right about 44.5 USG

I'd be very surprised if you could feel the difference in engine weight between the 420i and 420d. It's more likely that you're feeling the weight of the hybrid tech and XDrive in the 420d.

But you can certainly feel it when it adds up.. diesel being heavier, xdrive being heavier, mild hybrid unit being heavier..
Edit: + all of the added weight is over the front axle

I’m seriously considering the 3 series but would like more practicality. This is the only direct comparison I’ve seen between the 320i and 320d. Do you think the 320i would be just as good in the Touring? Did you mention the 330i? I assume similar weight of engine to the 320i, so in theory gives improved performance with better handling than a 320d Touring.

I have a 2023 420d x-drive and love it. I especially like getting 50mpg at diesel prices. Here in Japan, diesel is 138¥ per liter (about $4/gallon). My fuel bill is 33% of my previous Volvo.

Drove both the 420i and 420d coupe today in advance of ordering a 4 series Gran Coupe. I'm coming from an X3 2.0d xDrive M Sport (G01). The 420i was "nice" but for the way I drive it was missing some low range oomph. It was pretty quiet though, to the point I wasn't sure if there was a start/stop function operating. The 420d was really quite different ... it was brash (noisy) but had a lot more poke to it throughout the range. Maybe it's because I've got the same / similar engine in the X3 so was already conditioned to driving in a particular way (it's my 3rd X3 20d in a row after two F25s). Anyway, the order was placed for the 420d even though the economics tell me that the 420i would be the more cost effective choice over 40k miles.

    • @MisoElEven
      @MisoElEven 2 роки тому +3

How can economics tell you the 420i would be more cost effective? Diesel eats less and diesel is also cheaper than petrol (well it was until last week, but that also depends on your location I guess). Anyway, was either the 420i/d able to throw out the rear end a bit? I guess you werent trying to drift a 60k car on a test drive but still, its a question noone car really answer me. Its also the reason why I hate watching reviews like this one, someone is talking about driving characteristics of a car without ever going faster than 50km/h or even remotely trying to try to push out the rear...

    I enjoyed this review.
Now, I drive a BMW Series 4 - four years old.
I was going to order the new one and I was hesitating between petrol and diesel. For my driving I will go for the petrol.
However, after knowing that the large front grill (which I do like) will be changed in 2023 models, it makes me think if I should not wait another year before diving in...
But life is so short that... ;)

In normal times I do about 15k a year. Looking at a Skoda Superb next. Can’t decide between the 190 diesel 4x4 or 280 4x4 petrol In the real world with higher service costs am I really going to save that much with diesel? Tried a Passat 150 diesel manual and round town gearing seemed way too tall and felt like it was only just above stalling and quite coarse.

Nice review! That's interesting to hear about the 420d handling which is, due to the heavier Diesel engine, a bit "lazier" in comparison to the 420i. I'm currently driving a G20 330d xDrive and thinking about changing it for a 420i. No xDrive, lighter and cheaper engine, etc.

I remember back in early 2011 when BMW introduced the updated 530 series with petrol and diesel, my uncle opted for manual diesel 530 and I argued with him like - are you insane to buy a diesel when you have petrol.
After years I came to realise, 530 d back then was faster to 100 as well as in hear as opposed to its petrol counter part.
ODDS WERE BROKEN BACK THEN ....

I wonder if those handling differences called out in the video wwre due to the X drive on the 420d rather than the engine itself?
Its now 2024 and disappointingly bith the 420d and 430i are long dropped from the range. Not sure that's the right call especially for the convertible which is a heavy car and pretty slow in 420i form.

  • @gazthe-man

I deliberated about both options myself, but ended up going for a 430i instead of either! The £4k-ish extra is a bit steep, but I do think I've hit the sweet spot in the range, with the more powerful engine, M-Sport and unaffected by any extra weight of either the six cylinder or 4WD. Goes like s*it off a shovel, handles like a dream (for its size) and sooo much better than my previous 420d GC. Oh, and averaging 40+ MPG. WNTL? :-)
