Couple of things: 1. Yes, the i5 40 is magnificent. I have come out of a 2021 X5 30d and other premium/lux cars and it is an amazing all rounder, cheap to run, quick enough, silent, comfortable and fun on the right roads. Didn't really want an EV but won't go back.
The Model S LR here in the US is now $75K. 670hp/738tq, 0-60 3.1s, 405 miles of range. The Model S Plaid is now $89,995. Clearly, at those these price points there is nothing in the EV space that gives you what these Model S do for the money, nothing.

9:57 Tesla Supercharger network is seriously underrated Rented an iX from Sixt in the UK as it was brand new (delivery mileage) and offered to me as an upgrade to the Model Y. I happen to have both cars at home. I already know both cars well. The iX is more comfortable but a lot more expensive but here is the kicker, charging for a non-UK resident in a non-Tesla in nearly a nightmare. Tried two AC chargers, both did not want to play. Swarco being the worst, with multiple IDs on one machine, none of which worked when you enter it onto their website with other EV drivers struggling also (We were at Westgate, Oxford). Finally DC charged at a GridServe which thankfully accepted contactless charging without registering in an app but at a princely £0.79 per kW at a crawling 60kWh. I am not renting another non-Tesla in the UK until all CPO comply with the "no app, contactless" directive
The Tesla Model S being ONLY left-hand drive yet still being sold in the UK is pretty insane. 😬 Not being able to purchase a vehicle that is best suited to the local roads is arguably a safety risk (eg. worse visibility of vehicles overtaking on the right).
The model s was completely redesigned in 2021/22. I find it really odd that you repeatedly said it’s been around since 2012. That’s like saying the i5 has been around since the first year it went on sale. I agree with your verdict, however.
Great review. and rare - there is nothing out there comparing those 3 - normally the Plaid / Model S is more comparable to the EQS or i7 - but they are also way higher in pricing / luxury. BMW i5 I would choose the 40 fully loaded - more then enough power unless you need all wheel drive in the mountains / snow EQE I just bought the 500E, over the AMG - it comes with all the good stuff included (Hyperscreen, AMG packages, all assistens etc) with the same drive train as the AMG, but way more efficient especially way more then the 53 which is tested here, best compromise for me. Tesla? No thank you. We have a very good and dense charger network here (why not yet in the UK?) also who buys a car with the steering joke on the wrong side.
He mentions the Mercedes has rear wheel steering, but it also standard on the BMW i5 M60! And the BMW will (shortly) have access to the Tesla charging network. We picked the BMW M60!
To Answer, number two yes, the model S does offer all those things that no other EV does at that price range. However, the interior quality is garbage. It is made out of cheap materials. I have personally owned one tiny pieces of molding plastic aren’t aligned. It looks like it was a rush job and after taxes, it was well over six figures specked out.
how the hell does a 10 year design Tesla look significantly better than two top German brands EV models? I normally dislike Tesla styling, but the Model S looks elegant and sleek. The german models have too much going on, the front of that Mercedes is fugly.
Even the MSLR is easily the quickest car there. There was no reason to compare the Plaid to the other two as the Long Range is already so much faster. Now if they were doing a handling comparison, then the Plaid offers torque vectoring which wasn't even turned on in the handling portion of this test which is a shame. Also, they failed to mention the rear seat storage and cupholders, and center console which provides a reasonable space to actually write on. The USB-C ports, on late 2023 and 2024 charge at 35 watts so you can run and charge a laptop for real on them now. I agree with the overall verdict because Tesla refuses offer right hand drive which is outright dangerous in a left side driving country.
The summary comment that the Tesla went on sale 10 years ago, implying it is more dated is TOTAL RUBBISH. Extremely weak, poorly researched content. Motors, batteries, interiors and build quality has vastly improved over the last 10 years as well as having the latest and superior tech.
Those things are considered as a "facelift", it is not a new model. New drivetrains, suspensions, design features, sometimes changes to the handling and the electronics. Some models have a couple of facelifts in their production lifespan. The Model S is indeed 12 years old.
