- This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from December 11, 1998, features an interview with Johnny Rivers conducted by Gus Weill. Rivers, who grew up in Baton Rouge, is a singer and guitarist best known for such hits as “Secret Agent Man,” “Midnight Special,” and “Seventh Son.” He discusses: his initial interest in music; the success of his band in junior high school; his first foray into the New York music scene; meeting people in the Nashville music scene through his friendship with the wife of the late Hank Williams, Sr.; Ricky Nelson recording one of his songs; his work at the Whiskey A Go Go, which led to his first live album; his performance with the E Street Band at President Bill Clinton’s 1992 inauguration; Jimmy Webb and the song “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”; his work as a producer; his hit “Secret Agent Man”; gaining a Lifetime Membership Award from the Blues Foundation in 1992; the best conditions for creative work; and his life in Los Angeles.
Johnny was a great singer great songs he never got the recognition he deserved
seems like the most level headed celebrity i have ever seen.
Really enjoyed that interview. Johnny seems like a very nice person. Enjoyed getting to know him a little.
Fantastic interview. Johnny is a very introverted dude - great singer and producer - but introverted. This interviewer captured the real Johnny. Many thanks.
JOHNNY RIVERS, ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS, LOVE HIS MUSIC!
Johnny is so genuine!!
He really has been a good man. Just Love this guy. He has helped a lot of people. He has achieved what he set out to achieve. God has blessed him.

One of the coolest of the cool!
Heart Hitting Songs from Mr Johnny Rivers.
I am going to get all of johnnys recordings and get to know all his songs. he is great.
Why is Johnny Rivers not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame ?????
He is too real for that scam. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a great idea run by grifters.
See how they charged Steve Miller to bring his band (Remember all those hits were by "Steve Miller Band"!)
Johnny Rivers is in a class by himself, so at this point turning him into an "inductee" of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (look at all the posers who are already in there) would add insult to injury.
Go, Johnny, Go!
The hall of fame is prejudice against cajuns. The R&R hall of fame owner go his butte kikked in a bar fight by a cajun that threw a bowl of gumbo in his face.
Would be nice if they get him in there before he passes. He's 81 now. The guy is a legend. Period.
A great interview, part of that is the many doing the interview who lets the person tell the story and stays out of the way by just getting the person being interviewed tell their story. Being 6 years younger than Johnny Rivers I was in high school when he hit it big so he was a huge part of the music I listened to, this is the first time I have heard an indepth interview with him.
Even his speaking voice is amazing
Wow Johnny Rivers is so amazing love him
Johnny Rivers is a gorgeous man and I love his voice so much. Been listening to his music for alot of years!😘
I've always enjoyed his music. Two live concerts he even autographed one of my concert tickets. Have many of his recordings. Long live Johnny Rivers 👍 He could never write a bad song as far as I'm concerned.
That’s a great question. He should be in the hall of rock of fame
Johnny was 56 at the time of this interview, I'd say he looks a young 56 for sure. Great singer I learned to appreciate from my father.
about 25 at the most !!!!!
@@jean4578 Well I hope I age slowly like Mr. Ramistella here did! I think weightlifting and a decent diet have already helped me....at 53 I look a little less worn out than some poor souls younger than me.
Maybe I should pick up my guitar again, huh?
Johnny said he took Dick Clark pills !!
I took my mom to a JR concert in 2009. It was her first and she became hooked on concerts
He could pass for 40. Amazing.
Amazing history & some of my favorite artists
I love his voice. What a talent
This was a great interview. I like hearing how people got started in music.
Awesome interview! Johnny just laid it out in simple terms with no BS.
I'm watching this in 2022 and just loved it. I grew up with his music but never knew his history. He's still a heartthrob to this mature woman. My favorite video is, I need your loving. Everything on that video from the go-to girls dresses and shoes, brings me such fun to remember a similar dress and shoes from my early teens. Poor side of town is also a close second but the video for Baby I need your loving is the best video. Thank you for this wonderful interview. 🌻
My favorite, too. 😉
What a man. What a voice.❤
My favorite singer from way back growing up so good very versatile
...I have ALWAYS been a fan, I was listening to his music, from Jr high school, on.....The Album " Realization " was always one of my favourites, in High School..
Fast forward to years later, in Vegas, would see him perform quite a few tines,.....last time I saw him perform was in . Vegas, I think it was 2005......
He autographed my ticket, and it was so great to see him , sort of " up close ", ..
Saved one of my favourite songs for the Encore ...." Slow Dancin ( swayin to the Music )" ......OUTSTANDING. Still a fan , I am 66 years young......
One of my favorite singers Johnny was one of the best great songs
Is one of the best ...he is still alive and playing !!
I just find Johnny about 3 months ago yeah I'm slow Lol..anyway I fell in love with one of his songs 🥰 p side of town 💖

There is not a bad song.
I watched the interview again, and I'm so amazed by him, thank you all for posting this.

Extraordinário Johnny Rivers um artista único ,curto tudo que se refere a ele
From all these youtube vids of Johnny Rivers, I have learned that Brazilians are some of his greatest fans! Brazilieros know!
@@angryduane6696 lots of Brazilians here! 🙋🏻♀️ We do love him!
i was born the youngest of 4 in 1964, my older brother my only brother listened to motown and just about everything from the beatles to taj mahal and johnny rivers so this is a treat for me and being raised listening to my brothers songs and music i have a cell phone with 1,400 songs in it with everything from buddy holly to the supremes to metallica and slipknot even some rap but johnny rivers and led zeppelin have the most songs in the file
I find JR, is one of the best "feel good" pills out there. JR's stuff (with that special voice) just makes everything all right. I believe Jimmy Page is a Satanist and there was a heavy spirit upon them. The drummer Bon? so desperatly wanted to "go home" abnd get away, kjust did not make it. Paige had a 15 year old girl, voluntarily enslsaved in his apt. Think if she was your daughter. Time to give that creep a whooping. Look above their heads at the Lincoln center where JP put different occult symbols , finally, Listen to the LP by group called Taurus as they were suspected in "borrowing different hooks" This plaigarizing suit yiou can wiki, salso look up the home he chose.... spooky
Big Sur’s finest.
Always a fan and all of this info is new to me. I wore my 5th Dimension albums out! I never knew. Great interviewer and interview.
Yes, great interviewer; nothing like the trash we see today.
That was great, some really good stuff..!! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Yes Johnny ramistella he is of Italian decent from New York that's were I'm from I sing and play alot of his songs l have similar guitar
Love a light colored eyes Italian. I am a blonde green eyed Italian. My brother was a light brown hair, blue eyed Italian.
@@terryamaral3941 No He's no doubt of the Indigenous tribes of what they call American Indian people.
No Italian can sing like this except if they have the INDIGENOUS BACKGROUND. ❤
Jimi Webb is so awesome
he looks very healthy, so he must not have gotten into the drugs and alcohol like too many other rockers.
One of my favorite singers for many years the best very interesting video
He was 56 here best looking 56 I ever seen
Do another interview like this so I'll know you are ok. Big man, rock on.
I'm from Lafayette La and know where St. Francisville is!! Love JR
Bayou Teche.!
I LOVE JOHNNY RIVERS E SUAS MUSICAS AMO TODAS MEU IDOLO SEMPRE
Definitely some James Lipton vibes with this interviewer. He does a fine job, despite what a couple of “experts” believe 🤣
❤no musician is who you meet at concerts.they are working. He is working now.❤
Johnny Rivers
Poor Side Of Town
I did know Johnny Rivers had
Grandchildren
Oi John i estamos esperando a sua volta aos palcos love Brasil
One of the best cultural appropriators ever!
He's like 56 here. Why does he look 40!
John you should check your family background out.....too beautiful to only have that old Italian twang, at least I hear my peoples in your Styles.
Good storyteller. Interviewer cut him off a couple of times. Not so good. Surprised no hint of Cajun accent.
Lol comes out more in his singing. But great entertainer for sure. Love his music.
I modeled in a fashion show at Rosenfield's department store in Baton Rouge about 1965. I think Johnny played at that show as John Fred and the Playboys. Johnny, am I right?
I think that might have been Norman Ratner that sent him the tape. Norm was involved with a lot of acts. Rock The Boat the Hughes corporation was one of his groups
Old dude is an excellent interviewer. He asks great questions and then let's Johnny speak with no interruptions. Assholes now days can be pretty obnoxious and self centered with too much interjection into the interview.
I think Johnny was depressed at this time in his life?
I'm Blue
How do you get interviewed by Fred Stanford without laughing 😁
Mmm
What's mmm? Tells the truth?
@@juanysalicas9832 It means Mmmm Good!
Johnny Rivers is a good talented musician, except for one thing, Elvis first recorded a cut of Memphis Tennessee and was hanging out with Johnny at his house. Before Elvis released it, Johnny took it and released it. Not a good thing to do to a friend. Elvis played it down and didn't say anything!!! You can look this fact up on UA-cam.
Chuck Berry wrote the song, released it in 1959 and it became a big hit. Elvis recorded it 1/12/64 but due to delays caused by his film career, it was not released until 1965. Johnny performed it at Whisky A Go Go in 1964 presumably after Elvis had recorded it, this live version was released as a single and became a big hit. Memphis was recorded by many people. There is no way I would blame Johnny for performing it live nor its release as a single (which may have been a decision by record executives)
Johnny was simply better than Elvis.
That is a great quote: "you can look this fact up on youtube"! Hilarious!
The libel about "Memphis" and Elvis is nonsense. Lonnie Mack had hit with the song the year earlier, but Johnny Rivers had a version that sounded quite distinct (and also substantially different than the version eventually released by Elvis). It was a great song (its writer Chuck Berry knew how to get across a story in this one), and an exciting performance by Johnny Rivers. Everything else is just mean-spirited gossip, and unfortunately Elvis Presley was not around to correct whatever other errors Peter Guralnick (putting too much truck into memphis mafia bs) committed to paper in his generally enthralling Careless Love book.
Love Johnny Rivers! Could be the WORST interview ever! He checks all the boxes on how NOT to do an interview....interrupt repeatedly.... Check...ask ridiculous questions and not come prepared....Check....rinse and repeat for 26 minutes 😡😠😡😠😡😠
Johnny has had such a big career, much of it behind the scenes. Not much written about him so it is hard to get a lot of information. Even his web site is skant on information. Like here he didn't tell what song Ricky Nelson recorded of his. He should be in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame.
OK, I somewhat agree about the interviewer, but he's an older gentleman so I'd forgive his interruptions as maybe too much enthusiasm.
oh NO he's a Democrat - that's BAD BEWS - I really liked Jonny - but now Ive lost respect -
It should be he stole a legends song because he did he stole Elvis Song Memphis Tenessee from ELVIS subsequently Elvis never was never able to release his song.what a back stabber
Chuck Berry wrote and recorded Memphis...he was the original artist.
Get over it
The legendary THIEF that stole the hit “Memphis”.
