To be fair to Heroes, and probably this movie, they did in fact try to be more accurate by casting an actual child as Tails. The kid actually holds some sort of world record for youngest actor iirc. Of course, the downside to having a more accurate sounding voice is the fact that the kid will most likely have no real acting experience... or talent. That's why women are usually used. That, and those pesky child labor laws.

i think there must have been some translation errors. metal had sonic's personality but was compelled to kill him because of robotnik's orders. He infact wasn't totally a bad guy just being controlled. That was kind of the beauty of it, not just a random act of kindness~ was a little deep for a kid's show.

Brutalmoose, I am a long-time Sonic fan. For most of my life, I have loved the series and as a kid, I watched this "movie" countless times.
I just want to extend my thanks to you. So often on the internet do people make never-ending jabs at the Sonic series while ignore the good. However, you were fantastic, being critical on what needed to be criticized and then liking the fun aspects too.
I just appreciated that a lot and this review made me very nostalgic! Thanks for being such a great entertainer and for providing such a wonderful video!

NinjaFrogger What kind of Sonic Boom TV show are you watching?! Last time I watched, it was about the horrors about our youths, below-average fast food burgers, a little dressing up, a lot of boring walking and talking and 15 seconds of action in a 10 minute episode.

You may _hear_ that Sonic Boom isn't terrible, but that reputation is sorely undeserved.
Sonic Boom *is* terrible. Between the sheer cheesiness of the thing (Rise of Lyric, sadly, wasn't atypical for the show), the SUUUUUUUUPER cheap CG animation -- like, that kind of "Cartoon Network" sort of cheap CG that the likes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the bad 3D one, not the good 2D one) and Star Wars: Rebels were animated with -- the stupid stories/plots, and the downright insulting re-characterization of the main Sonic cast, just about the only half-decent aspect of the show is the voice acting.
I mean, really, Robotnik (I'm not calling him "Eggman" because that's fucking dumb, sorry) was re-characterized into a walking lampshade and an unsuccessful and idiotic buffoon, and Knuckles's character was utterly raped into mental retardation! (Seriously, he can no longer tell his left from his right. WTF. :~/). Not to mention that the CG animation is SO bad that the graphics of Rise of Lyric on the Wii U were an actual *_improvement_* on those of the show...Seriously, I've seen 30-second UA-cam ads for "Clash of Clans" that look better than the Sonic Boom TV show does! WTF. O_O
Honestly, it reminds me of that Donkey Kong Country CG cartoon from a few years back (yes, THAT one, "banana slamma"), and NOT in a _good_ way. (If it is even possible to mean that "in a good way," lol.)

For years I thought this movie was just a weird dream I had as a kid.
I had a similar experience - I walked in on some people watching _Happy Gilmore_ while very drunk at a house party once, and it wasn't until several years later that I found out it was a real movie and not something I'd imagined. "A golf movie starring Adam Sandler? No, no I must have just seen part of something else and misunderstood what was going on" I remember thinking.
That's hilarious. I can kinda see why you thought that. (I've seen like 30 seconds of it and it sure seemed like a trip.)

I adored this movie. I love the animation, the voice actors, I genuinely wish the crazy owl remained a part of the sonic canon, the art direction, metal Sonic’s design, the weird soundtrack and of course Knuckles’ hat I was always mad he never had that hat in other media.
Why does Sara look like a bootleg Aerith? It bothers me more than her voice does.
Why does Chris look like a cross between Sora from Kingdom Hearts and a Digimon protagonist? Why does Maria look like Alice from Alice in Wonderland? Why does Topaz look like a cross between Sailor Uranus and Aika Sumeragi? (ok, that last one may be a bit forced I will admit)
Yeah, this is something that bugs me about human characters in the franchise, if they are not generic-looking, they look like someone else.

I really love the soundtrack of the ova. It's something thats kinda different than the classic games, and goes for a sorta adventure-like feel. Kinda wish they made a sequel to the OVA, addressing the problems with it. Overall, one of my favorite vids of yours Moose.
The OVA's soundtrack - particularly the credits music - makes me think of the Sonic R soundtrack which I also freakin' love.

One track (Look-a-like) was eventually released in True Colors: The Best of Sonic the Hedgehog Part 2 but it's been edited.
The vocal track is nice but boy the things I'd do for HD rips of South Island and Land of Darkness.
Definitely those especially South Island. Who knows? Maybe through some form, we can ask SEGA for a digital release.
Wouldn't work. The reason the OST was never release was because the production company has burned to the ground at least three times since the movie was made. The original recordings are more than likely lost.

Mobile Tails has different voice actresses in Adventure and Adventure 2, but they sound so similar, you practically can't tell the difference. What you mean is Heroes, which I agree with

Sonic Adventure and Shuffle was Corey Bringas (you can tell he reached puberty during Shuffle), Adventure 2 was Connor Bringas and Heroes, Battle and Advance 3 was William Corkery.

I still adore this old anime aesthetic. Since most of the animation was done by hand via cells, there was a always a distinct personality and life to every frame that most modern-day animation can't achieve. Elements of this may not have aged too well, but it was a style all its own and I always love seeing the level of detail that was given to everything, especially the backgrounds.
HD scans of the 16mm film originals (when available) are really good too. Obviously only the biggest shows have received this treatment though, Cowboy Bebop for example.
The soft VHS lines become crisp, it’s very easy to see the cel shadows cast on the layers below, and occasionally there’s texture to the colouring when they didn’t lay the paint on thick enough on the back side of the cel.

Nice review, I also had this on VHS as a kid and loved it. Kinda weird seeing so many people in the comments section hating on it. Maybe it's the irrational hatred a lot of people have towards Sonic nowadays. I personally believe it's the best animated portrayal of Sonic and co. (the new Sonic Boom cartoon comes pretty close though, surprisingly). Sonic's a snarky asshole, Tails is smart and brotherly, Knuckles loves treasure hunting and has his friendly rivalry with Sonic, Robotnik is goofy but a serious threat to the world at the same time. The non-game characters are okay by me; I was never annoyed by them as a kid or now.
Also, there were a few plot details you seemed to have overlooked. The whole "separate dimensions" thing is just a translation error. Knuckles stops the magma from reaching the ice bridge by digging holes to redirect it away, Tails didn't try to reprogram Metal earlier because it was something he thought of on the spot, and the Old Man was the reason the ship crashed since he was the one flying it. As for why Robotnik bothered with trying to kill Sonic as Metal Robotnik, or why the President's ship exploding didn't doom everyone, well, you got me there. Just some artificial conflict to keep the plot moving I suppose, haha.

Sonic sounds like a strange high pitched version of all the Beatles and Gex mixed together. Throw in all other New Yorker accents and a New Jersey one as well as normal Sonic and there you have it...

Yeah, I always thought it was weird when I watched the film and it had characters that weren't in the games or the several animations and anime, but it makes sense that the film creator would take some artistic liberties, because the Classic Sonic games have bugger all in terms of story and setting description and the animations contradict the little information given. Also I'm pretty certain the only reason for Sara being a cat girl is due to the writer needing to hit his anime quota.
The strategy guide for Sonic 1 & 2 came with a full color comic setting up the premise of the first game.

@@troywright359 they released the comic in the UK as well but in a standalone promotional magazine (before the UK comic book series) which promoted Sonic CD and previewed Sonic 2.
Edit: actually maybe they just adapted the story into text for that magazine, and didn’t show the actual panels? I have the magazine itself but it’s packed away and I haven’t read it in many years. There were 2 or 3 other comics in the magazine too though.
The backstory was also adapted into a Scholastic picture book of all things. Which Scholastic were still selling in some of their book fairs in like 2005 or so. (I guess the stock just hadn’t cleared out yet.)

For any one interested, someone who worked on the music for this OVA gave permission for someone to release some music tracks from OVA, and some songs that weren’t used. If you ever dug the music from the movie and wished it was available, it’s on UA-cam now. YEARS later. We had to settle for rips and fan covers of the music for....well decades at that this point. Now it’s all there.
