- Blue Star Fern, proper name being Phlebodium aureum is a wonderful fern to grow indoors as a houseplant. Care for this fern is quite simple and even better this houseplant is extremely easy and forgiving. Caring for ferns indoors can be complicated but not with the Blue Star Fern. These ferns are ok with less water and light than traditional ferns that are commonly grown indoors.

I have 6 different spevies of ferns right now. 3 are coming back from the brink of death with a few new shoots. Im in love with rhem but boy oh boy no plants have ever been this high maintenance. Keeps me on top of my plant care though!!

Try a rabbit foot fern, I too am a fern killer & I’ve kept it alive for a few months now! So I saved one of these ferns from Walmart & it too is still alive! So I got brave & got a maidenhair fern, I did put it in a open glass terrarium & it’s still alive, not as full but alive! Don’t give up! I think besides humidity they like air flow but I’m no expert on them
I use black gold orchid mix for mine, it's basically a soil but it's formulated for epiphytic orchids. Works great 😁
Thank you for the tips! I'm going to try only bottom watering and when I repot I'll do what you said with the 60-40. I was making so many mistakes with this gal. I think I was putting her in too much light, using tap water and fertilizing too often. Oh and there was a bit of a draft in her room. So thankful for plant grace with this one.
I just purchased my first fern and soooo happy I did. Ferns are so cute, something special about them. Blue Star Fern is a new one to me, I like that tropical color.💙
I’ve got a maidenhair and a blue star and somthing about them you’re right. So delicate compared to my other plants. I’ve had them 2 weeks and I’ve watered them 3 times and half my other house plants haven’t been water since before I got them so that’s going to be interesting.
Hello Jeff, love your videos. So I saw this fern growing on my Pigmy Date Palm. I took a couple of the stems with the roots and want to replant it. My question is, the leaves have a bunch of yellow spores on the back. Would this be the same as the one you have in this video? Hi, thank you for all those tips. Just bought a fern at a big store and nobody knew what kind of fern it was. It looks like the Kangaroo Paw fern but after watching this video, I'm in doubt, it looks like that blue fern. Understood by your video that basically the care is the same. I'm originally from Puerto Rico and there are ferns everywhere. Their beautiful and having a piece from home feels great.

LOL. This Florida native is actually a pain in the rear for me. It spreads like crazy because of irrigation and it is really hard to get rid of once it establishes in an area you don't want it because you can't get rid of the whole rhizome (when it grows as a terrestrial). I've been pulling it out of a bed under the oak for two years. The landscapers are constantly pulling them off the Sabal Palms, they sprout in the area where the leaf joins the trunk and apparently that is ugly. The best potting medium for it? Hardwood mulch, no dirt, trust me. Holds moisture, airy and easy to remove when repotting.
I actually think they look quite nice growing in the intersects of the old boots and straps on Sabal palms, partially because that is what is natural for them. I can see how what would make for a sturdy houseplant up north would make for an unruly and overbearing plant down south! Yup, think i said in the video that if I lived down south in Florida I would just use bark and a coconut fiber lined basket. It is often challenging up north here for people to keep them hydrated in pure bark as the air is much more dry so the entire basket/planter would have to be submerged and soaked for the mulch to fully absorb water which is fairly impractical when the fern matures for the average person who just wants to keep it indoors as a houseplant. That is usually the problem when I'm helping clients around here with their blue star fern, they pot them into mulch and can't keep them hydrated during the fall and winter when they are inside and the air is dry. I love how these look in the trees down south, must be nice that our house plants are your weeds! lol! ... grass is always greener as they say. :)

She is a pretty slow to moderate? grower in my care, but she produces new fronds one at a time, so I think she somehow likes me a bit XD btw, i am a new fan of your channel~😄

Beautiful plants but they can be complete nightmares! The main thing people screw up is watering them too much...they really don't like to be as constantly moist as other ferns, and once they have a touch of rot it's over...you may as well just bin it, there and then. And It's always best to bottom water them - soak and drain well.

What do you do if the leaves are v dry. I bought one and didn't realize how dry the leaves were 😐. I just been misting the leaves daily and watering every 2 to 3 days. I'm in UK so it's cold in winter. Thanks
hello, Karen! If the leaves are dry to the point that they are crunchy and fall apart, then those are dead leaves, you can just cut them off of the plant. Misting the surface of the soil will help also. If you have something large enough to place the plant inside of, like a transparent or translucent storage bin, or clear plastic trash bag, that will create a nice humid environment to help it bounce back. it is important if placing it into a container to make sure to slowly transition it back to normal home conditions once it had rehydrated. You can do this by making sure to open the lid for a few minutes everyday, increasing how long it is left open daily for a week or so. This will prevent it from being shocked by the sudden change in condtions.

Pine needles don't turn the soil basic, quite the opposite, they are very acidic and it's very difficult to turn basic an acidic soil so it's not that problematic.
they usually grow in the deposits of organic sediments above trees and rocks. Venezuelan here, and the humidity tend to be very high but fresh although never in the "soil" thus this is always with some moisture but low during most of the year, what happens is that when it rains the water pass through these deposits, which are like a sponge.

I own. Oh I can't imagine how much work that would be having to move all of the plants! I move mine from the backyard to the garage every fall and that alone is exhausting!
