They are Divas indeed. I have tried to love them, but I end up killing them. You have the touch for them.

My secret, a light amount of light and a ton of water. I use a watering tray (with pebbles) and a misting spray bottle at least twice a day. Depending on the heat I will water about every other day. Though every day isn't unheard of. Try a rabbit's foot fern. They have the most beautiful shade of jade and they're very unique. They're also more forgiving than other ferns, though they still love their water.

This was a great video, thank you. I've been gaining confidence growing calatheas, but I finally got myself a rabbit foot fern today. Thanks again for all the tips and plant talk.

I am currently working with a Blue Serpent Fern. I keep her on my desk and mist her when ever I don’t see moisture on the leaves. It’s going well so far but we will see. I also have an asparagus fern (not a fern). Mine likes bright light, like as bright as it can be without direct light hitting him... and during the winter he kinda like the direct light. I also don’t water him till he almost dries out as he has big roots that hold water pretty well. The fern title totally misleads people with his care I think, at least it did for me in the beginning.
He’s been sending up a bunch of new growth this spring! So exciting :D

Are you talking about the blue star fern? I love those. A buddy of mine has one that's fairly large! I've never had one. Is your asparagus fern on your desk too? That's cool, you must have ok humidity. Mine dried out in the terrarium I had him in so I had to get another one. This one was larger and seems to be ok, but he's getting some dry spots too. I made him a pebble water try and that's definitely help. Yes my Sprenger's new growth at the top comes in crazy. It just shoots up, lol.

The Green Alchemist So they sold it is an blue serpent fern... looks a lot like a blue star so I’m wondering if they just got the name wrong. It’s so pretty! My asparagus fern I moved to directly in front of a west-facing sliding glass door so its gets bright indirect light all day. I have GREAT humility. Never had it before and all my plants were a bit bummed about it, but now I live right across from a lake and my plants are ALL doing better. I am even keeping a maiden hair fern alive! My humidity is about 60-80 depending on if i run the humidifier. I lucked out with this house location :D (Seattle, WA, USA)

I never tried to grow a fern. I’m not good with any plant really. And I’m not planning on getting one either, they seem so needy, but they’re so fascinating and your video is still very educational even though I’m not planning on growing.
I want to say thank you for making this video because I learned a lot. Appreciate you and your passion.

Thank you very much! It's always great to hear from fans that they enjoy your work. I love being able to translate some of what plants need to thrive to others. I know with the insane amount of varieties out there figuring out what any one of them likes can be daunting! 🌺

@@TheGreenAlchemist I’m in the desert so no variety would be good for me, I forget to hydrate myself as it is! But who knows, one day maybe, your passion is inspiring. You do speak their language and that shows.

Beautiful fern collection! I love ferns but I’ve killed many. Recently killed my rabbits foot fern. I repotted it and cover the rhizome with soil. Didn’t no how to care for it. My maiden hair, my Kangaroo paw foot fern and Boston fern are doing quite well.

  • @ro6874

Your videos are so informative, I appreciate that!
I have all of these same ferns (except the Boston which I’d like to get, as well as a Crocodile Fern) so I appreciate all your tips.
I also have a Kangaroo Paw and Blue Star fern which are so beautiful.
I will say they seem to like more light than I expected. When I first got ferns I thought they’d be good low light plants but I’ve since moved them to brighter (indirect) light. I’m also struggling a bit with the Lemon button and one of my Maidenhair... I’ve moved them closer to my humidifier so hopefully they make a good come back.
    Thanks!

That's too cool. I'm glad to see I'm not the only fern-obsessed one out there! They just relax me. They're so Jurassic for lack of a better word. I love my maidenhair and my rabbit's foot ferns. My staghorn has had a little bit of a tough go this year, he's dropped two leaves but I've given him more water and he seems stable. I just did a video on my crocodile fern and he's doing great this season thank the Lord! They all love my humidifier too. Thanks for watching!!🌺

“So Jurassic” haha I’ll have to start using that term.
Yes I think ferns are so lush and are a must for that jungle/forest vibe.
I’d really like to have a thriving maidenhair... I’m not giving up yet!
I’ll check out the crocodile video👍🏼
My Stag is doing so well i soak it pretty well in the tub once a week and I’ve started misting it daily. What an awesome plant! Good luck with yours!🌿🥰🌱🌳

I love mine. I've had him over three years now and he's a tank. He's gets light from a south facing window and distilled water and he's in heaven. Make sure you feed them regularly if you dont have em in some substrate though. Salem (the cat) says hi!

Maidenhair ferns need high humidity, mine thrives in a room close to my humidifier with dappled shade and moist soil. :-)

I just brought a Cretan brake fern. It was a markdown plant, it's variegated but looking to revive and keep around for a long time. Have you ever heard of it?

what would do well to plant in a large pot with a fern

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 років тому +1

This is a tough one. Ferns love a lot of water but they don't like a bunch of light. Your best bet would be to try and find something tropical just bc they can take a lot of water like a fern, but most tropicals love light. I would go with a bromeliad, air plant,
schefflera arboricola or umbrella plant (dwarf) or another fern. A phalaenopsis orchid may also work for you.

Please don’t put your ferns in cacti substrate!! it is far to free draining, that’s why you’re needing to water so often, ferns need to have consistently moist soil, cacti substrate simply can’t provide that for them. Try a mix of co co coir, peat moss and standard houseplant soil and a bit of orchid bark for drainage (you could mix a little perlite in for drainage if your worried about root rot but I have never found the need). Good luck with your ferns, I have a large collection and although they’re a challenge they are worth the effort. :-)
