How to Care For Your Invasive Asparagus Fern, Fox Tail Fern

So you are looking into this kind of feathery fern are ya?
This sprawling shrub is a native to coastal southeastern South Africa. is in the lily family (armaryllis, daylilies, hosta, tulips)
This fern does well in zone 9-11 the roots will survive in zone 7 if protected, is very drought - resistant needs little care and looks bright all year long. The Fox Tail will tolerate full sun but performs better in the morning sun and afternoon shade, or even light shade. Asparagus Fern spreads from cultivation to invade low-light areas. Fox Tail is invasive in 9 countries and is Hawaii's worst invasive horticultural plants. They are very difficult to control one established due ta an extensive root structure & can regrow from small root parts spread by bird droppings. Asparagus Fern will grow vigorously in the heat of summer because it is a humidity loving plant.
The fern produces pinkish-white flowers followed by red berries which you can propagate & will germinate in 3-4 weeks at room temperature. The most common is Sprengeri and Meyeri-which I used in this video.
You can grow this fern inside in a pot just spray often with water & place inside bright direct morning sun. When you have your fern in a pot it becomes an annual. If you use the Fox Tail outside in your landscaping then in the summer water it often, fertilize to encourage growth. Make sure to prune the brown stems at the base, beware of the soft - looking fonds because they have very sharp thorns. Water once a week during the winter in the summer water when soil is 50% dry and the fonds are yellow. That is a clue!!
** This Fox Tail Fern is toxic to humans as well as dogs & cats. So remember to wear gloves when handeling this plant to protect your hands and arms from the poisonous sap. In dogs & cats the sap will give them an allergic dermatitis. Eating the berries could result in vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.

This plant grows in full sun to full shade. I live in Houston Texas zone 9a. It’s soooooooo hot in here and we have these plants everywhere in sun and shade. I have mine both in full sun and full sun it actually doesn’t require any supplemental water from me like a rose shrub in the heat of the summer. Just try planting it in the sun because it gets bushier and cooler looking than in the shade . The tails parts become twisted and so full in full sun
I have a asparagus fern. It's doing so good! She was root bound but I have her in a bigger pot now. She's very sensitive.

I had worked in the garden center in Walmart in two different regions one up north and one down in the South. I was able to educate myself on the vegetation that was sold at each store region. I was also able to know which region sold what kind of plant. I think this is easier for potential buyers to know where they can purchase that plant from. Not to say it was enjoyable to learn what each plant does for the environment animals in humans. I was also very surprised to know that some of the vegetation sold at Walmart is very poisonous to humans and animals and used regularly around Southwest Florida in landscaping. I truly believe that the landscapers are not educated to know what the difference is in these plants.
The foxtail fern is only mildly poisonous to both humans and pets. Swallowing small amounts will likely not cause symptoms. If your skin comes into contact with a foxtail fern, it may cause minor irritation from a compound known as sapogenin. It’s always a good idea to exercise caution and keep foxtail ferns out of reach of children and pets who may be prone to ingesting them.
Are foxtail fern berries poisonous to humans?
The foxtail fern berries are usually produced in the fall and winter seasons and may tempt both pets and humans with their sweet, candy-like smell.
When eaten, the foxtail fern berry can cause a range of minor symptoms, including upset stomach and vomiting. The severity of these symptoms depends on the number of berries ingested and children and adults typically would not swallow enough to pose a serious problem. Pets are more adventurous when it comes to plants and their symptoms may be more severe.
@@SpaceTravel1776 The foxtail fern is harmful to both because not of being ingested. But how the sap and soft needles burrow through the skin. This is not a native plant to Florida and is invasive. Once its established it’s hard to kill

Living in Spain near Valencia, this is super invasive and everywhere 😱. Literally impossible to remove it. Soft when they are in wet seasons but as soon as they are older than 3 weeks.. that’s it.. so spiky that you basically can’t touch them with your bare hands. Didn’t know they are also toxic to my animals too.. I have decided to shave them as short as possible regularly ( even cut them with my scissors in the ground).
I have some foxtails planted in the ground in south Texas. The bulbous roots have started spreading underground fairly far from the parent plant. Are they harmful to the other surrounding plants? I've heard they can choke out other nearby plants.
Yes they are they are invasive (take over) both under ground and over. Note they also are toxic to animals as well as your self if you let sap from the Fonda onto your skin. Be protected when handling them.

I have a question. A neighbor had cut some of these down & tossed them out as trash. They were thrown on top of a bunch of small round tubers with roots. I assume these grew from those tubers they dug up?? I don't know how long they'd been on the street but hopefully not too long. I got a bunch of the tubers with roots & they're in a plastic bag right now. Will these ferns grow from these tubers if I plant them? And if so...I'd like to share with a friend but I won't see her for awhile. Will they be ok left in the plastic bag until I can give her some? For how long?? Should they be watered in the bag? I really don't know much about them or how to store the tubers. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Super glad I found this video. My gramma gave me her foxtail fern in a huge container and now in my care it has completely died I am devastated. I cut all the brown dry leaves off and am left with soil. Will they grow back or do I need to buy new seeds ? Please advise thanks so much
I would say at this point yes they are dead if all you have is soil. If you had a stem you could do a scratch test on it. Green it’s still savable, brown it’s dead to the root and would need to be replaced. Also what area do you live in depends on is life as well they can spread wildly and are toxic just buy brushing against your skin. There is more information under my video of this type of plant. Thanks! the ones I have here are babies right from the nursery. I was a bit torn on doing my video with the babies or in front of a well grown adult when it is in the shrub form. I might do another so plant lovers can get an idea of what they will turn into.

Quick question if the plant is poisonous how can they use in flower arrangements?
That is the thing. Not all growers or florets are being educated enough on each plant. Or it’s a hush hush kind of deal.
For instance in my HOA family neighborhood they are e everyplace as so cald “decorations, Landscaping”that a landscaping company who is not fully trained on these plants will plant per design and order, they are not trained to educate homeowners. They look at the $$$ not what harm it does to humanity.
@@beckymiller4441 I have owned one for more than 18 years The one I purchased was about the same size as the one you have in your video and it costs me about $16 resize it is now is about to 10 time sad I have not even tried to deal with separating it into smaller pots

These are pretty drought tolerant and can go long periods without water. But they do love humid. When you water them do not water above . Water underneath so the water will rise up as humid threw the shrub. They can make it in a sandy soil as well.
Foxtail ferns are not true ferns. But asparagus . They reproduce from seeds and not spores. Those are called shoots not fronds. 👍🏾👍🏾.

Presenter doesn't have the type of voice necessary to hold a viewer's attention. She uses too much repetition and speech fluff. I Watch for subject details, not entertainment. Also, know your scientific information. Ferns have fronds not fons.
I think she did a fabulous job and I appreciated her talking clearly and slowly for beginner gardeners like myself. there are so many Utube garden shows so find one that better suits you, but I would leave the negative comments out as it was rude. She’s trying to help people, your rude comment was disrespectful.
