It's a song about meeting women on the road, and making no commitments and not feeling guilty about it. One of the best lines ever, "Some they do, and some they don't, and some you just can't tell; and some they will, and some they won't, and some it's just as well." Ain't that the truth. I don't think Mary and Jane are drug references, just random, common female names. Also one of the best guitar outros ever.
I also think what you say - they discribe their life in this song - at this time they were touring from country to country most of the time - I am from germany and for us young people at this time there was no party and no living without music from Supertramp - their sound was so amazing that we loved the band even not understanding one word what they sing about :)
"Goodbye stranger, it's been nice, hope you find your, paradise, tried to see your, point of view, hope your dreams will, all come true..." then the answer/call back on the backing vocals, f'kn brilliant
Please keep going with Supertramp! "Bloody Well Right" and "School" should be added to your future ST reactions list! Thanks for another reaction, MD! ✌💙✌
As a kid I heard Supertramp all the time on the radio, wasn't really a huge fan but somehow, all that listening just sank into my musical appreciation DNA, feel blessed to have heard so many great bands and musicians that were so "adult" growing up I wouldn't get it until decades later, this band is F'kn brilliant
It's about one night stands with no hidden meanings at all. Using the names Mary and Jane was just a choice to use common female names to represent the women in general.
It’s so funny how I know a lot of “classic rock” song pretty well .. from childhood.. but didn’t put much thought into the meaning until now.. but I think you are 100% correct on this one. 🤓🎉
The Guitar solo is played by Roger and the piano is Rick Davies You should look up the live version (live in Paris 1979) which is on UA-cam too. it's fun to watch. 🙂
This is the ultimate cocaine album. Every song on this album was triple tracked - meaning that there are three tracks of every instrument and vocals. That's why it feels so full and rounded. Great album. The Logical Song is awesome too. Do you notice the waitress on the cover is the statue of liberty and behind her is New York harbor built in utensils/plates/etc.
There is an incredible version of Bloody Well Right, here on UA-cam. I hope you get to see it, if you haven't already. I didn't check. Great reaction to a great old song! Thanks!
The high pitched voice was a man singing and his message to the women that he has been with is that he wishes them well to offset his unintended insensitivity and callousness that the women may feel from being moved on by him
Can you please check out some INXS (in excess) and Duran Duran? INXS, The Loved One, live in Australia in 1987 and Duran Duran, official video for Rio, or Save a Prayer...just for starters. Both bands have so much more. Deep rabbit holes with both.
I think it’s humorous…typical band/groupie behavior. But I think it’s meant to be funny, it’s almost happy and carefree and playful. Either way, this song is great, best outro ever.

Great analysis, but they know Mary-Jane 😂😎🔥
Talk aboutctiming--I was reading comment just as those lyrics were playing.

My favorite Supertramp Lp. I played the crap out of this. Give a little bit is a banger ❤
You nailed the meaning. He’s not celebrating the way he is, he values his freedom but knows it comes with a price
Breakfast in America was a brilliant album every song a hit, it really did make an impact on me and my generation here in Australia.

was lucky enough to have seen them back then. they were fantastic.
Love Supertramp, a very good rabbit hole to go down. Enjoy!

I dig the way you find the meanings in the songs.

One of my favorite bands in the mid 70’s

Keyano, I like it.
Maybe they should add a violiddle😂
He's smart. I haven't seen any reactor comment about the double meaning of, Mary Jane.

It's been said that if you listen to that guitar outro while driving that your car automatically increases speed at least twenty miles per hour
Fantastic reaction 🔥❣️🔥❣️🔥❣️
When you listen to breakfast in America you'll recognize it cuz Gym Class Heroes sampled it and it was a huge hit.
Weird fun fact : If you look at the album cover in a mirror it's shows 9/11 above world Trade Center...🤔

That Guitar solo tho.
Nice Mike Bibby jersey. Loved him growing up.
Loved when he played for the Miami Heat
Roger is the higher voice Rick has the lower..you need to hit earlier tunes from 70s era.. try school or sister moonshine
Fire!

Rodger Hodgson also had a solo hit banger called "Had a dream" (Sleeping with the enemy / 1984) that shouldn't be missed. Peace
What the heck is on your roof!! 😲
Can you please react to Sabrina Carpenter office music for espresso
