For context: Jim & Andy - but this was a great podcast post for others researching this incident. Seems that he didn't connect to you as "Jim" when filming, he was too involved with being Andy.

lol it really is a cool gesture from Jim but I think it’s comparison to the disappointment he likely felt by not getting the costume he was originally under the belief that he was supposed to be able to keep. And I wonder if that aspect of things prevented appreciation for the thought behind the gift. He also seems to think past that Jim he doesn’t consider how to get in touch because he has people who can seek out and arrange that stuff for him and doesn’t really consider that Jerry is famous but he’s normal human famous not world renowned, immense wealth famous like Jim.

I remember being about 10 or 11 and watching a documentary about Andy Kauffman and Jerry Lawler. My dad had told me a little bit about Andy’s comedy but that documentary was mind blowing to see all the crazy stunts and pranks they did. Andy was so ahead of his time and I have so much respect for Jerry for collaborating on such classic comedy/performance. Rest In Peace Andy.

The reason jim never warmed up to lawler on set was because of the doc being filmed and the rest of the cameras . If cameras were around when Andy and lawler were in the same vecenity andy always stayed In the character that him and lawler were enemies . This was lost on lawler because the depth was a little much . It was an actor playing a part that was playing a part in an environment that if andy was actually carrey wouldnt have been able to leave character. You cant blame lawler for being confused in the situation and you cant deny the genius and commitment it took for jim to succeed in this task .

JC assumed Lawler knew how to contact him cuz he sent him the robe. Why'd JC go artsy & reclusive? He cold dumped & shut off from his gf Jenny Mcarthy and her autistic kid who had bonded to JC, and was reportedly very tight fisted. Her Stern interview indicates he is kind of hard to get close to.
JC and Kaufman were so far out there to get laughs. But, too much of JC went sexual and very inappropriate for my tastes. JC's movies appealed to kids but were very sexually inappropriate.
That Man on the Moon role put Carrey in touch with fatality: Kaufman suddenly went from diagnosis to dead in a few months. Andy was duped into fake psychosurgery and JC played that utterly devastated moment in the movie very well, even if Andys closest friends / family say JC got the role mostly wrong and too aggressive. Andy sounds much nicer in person.
Sort of like the Harpo Marx character who acted mute, Harpo never allowed his voice to be recorded or spoke in interviews because the "magic" would be tarnished, Kaufman was playing a role that included trying to be hated, "A bad guy." But, he was acting.
No return address on that gift from JC? No manager to get hold of him? Would Lawler actually want to talk to JC about life, death, meaning when he calls JC weird?
That Kaufman-Lawler slap on Letterman is still one of tv's highest rated moments. Genius entertainment, some ad-libbing and being on the edge, like Robin Williams, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Jim Belushi, Chris Farley... all dead. No more quest for laughs. Maybe JC wanted "more."
JC has all the $$$ he could ever need. But, having achieved his comedy dreams, whats next? On a search for what matters after all material wealth, fame, and influence connections were far surpassed.
Give any of us that and who knows what would happen... peace to JC but Lawler could easily contact him if he really tried.
Nice letter. Very heartfelt. Classy. Thankful. Genuine.

Hmm, it seems like Jerry is still bitter in this interview. While I get his reaction I think he totally misunderstood Jim back then and even now he really doesn't get what goes through the mind of a man like Jim Carrey. They didn't get along it's obvious, but it always comes from the both sides. On the set there were few times where Jerry really got too agressive. He did used his obvious power to hurt Jim physically, which in my opinion absolutely unproffesional. It was like punching a kid for being a kid. Jim pushed his buttons, it's true, but what Jerry didn't truly understand that ultimately it was just an act. Notice how he didn't appretiate the letter at all. And no, Jerry, you're wrong again: Jim was a spiritual person waaaay before the Man On the Moon. This film maybe was a big step, but definetely not the first one.

When he speaks and tells stories about he’s time on set all it sounds like is Jim Carrey is just staying in character of the script. A lot of actors do as they want to make the character more believable. I thought Jerry who had worked on WWE for so many years would know about it. He just seems like a complete douche in this video. And I love Jerry but I just think he sounds really bitter as he does not understand how some actors work on a role. He probably was rude to Jerry and doing all the shit to make chemistry and build some tension for there scenes. And then Jim offers an apology and a present and Jerry try’s to humiliate him just bad form in my opinion. Like I said I love Jerry but listen to this video my opinion on him has gone a bit lower as he just seemed a bit of a bully in truth.

Carrey stole that robe and had the audacity to thank Jerry for "gifting" it to him.

Manuel Ramos This must be Jerry Lawler's real voice. I guess he "affected" a southern accent as part of his character. LOL!

Lawler is ungrateful, that's a really thoughtful gift from Jim. Disappointed in Lawler here.

@Brian Fike Maybe, but still disappointing that Lawler didn't take the high road and instead dissed the peace offering.
