Joseph, the reason for that may have been "cute" nod to the old days, when Kaufman (and I) were young, when credits appeared only on the beginning. and it just ended with THE END.
Forman once talked about how he wanted to make this movie more critical and realistic, diving more into the mind of Kaufman, however DeVitto, who produced, wanted just a tribute.
Ooh, it sounds to me like Danny was afraid a too realistic biopic would paint a bad image of a dear friend of his. But this request caused the movie that obviously wanted to go in one direction to feel forceably cut short and forced into a different direction
Rachel J When the pro wrestler Jerry The King Lawler wanted to beat Jim Carrey's ass for disrespecting Andy's memory wih this movie. Lawler was a friend( and at one point enemy)of Kaufman, and he was pissed off at Carrey...and this movie.

Andy was a performer who didn't want to get laughs, but reactions. Of any kind. If he made you believe in his act he got what he wanted. The fact that some people genuinely believe he's still alive 30 years later makes him in my opinion one of the greatest performers that's ever lived.
I loved this movie before I did research on Andy. I had the same opinion on Patch Adams. Loved the film before I did research on the guy and watched it again. Both don’t hold up for me anymore.

I just want to point out that when I saw this movie, I had no idea who Andy Koufman was. Having the routines in there that "everyone knows" helped me. You might know them, and might question how other would not, but not everyone does, and as time goes on, the number of people that know the routines is going to go down, not up. They kinda need to be in here.
Snacker6 yeah when I first saw the film I didn’t know who Andy Kaufman was either so those scenes were totally new to me. But it wouldn’t have hurt the film to put the scenes no one knew about in there. I think to Doug’s point it would’ve made it more interesting. Why show one thing and leave out the other?! I still like the movie a lot tho.
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing... I was just a kid when I saw this movie the first time and didn't know Andy Kaufman at all. This movie not only became one of my favorites but it also was highly formative for me during my teenage years. I never would have even had an interest in Kaufman or his work without this movie and I was inspired to learn more about him because of it.
@@Gsevenreviews Yeah but the problem is that its not that easy. A lot of times when you make biopics like this you have to get the permission of the estates that own the person's work currently; especially when they're dead. Take Jimmy Hendrix for example. He's a famous musician yet when a famous movie studio tried to make a biopic about him, his estate said they'd only allow if the movie studio agreed to NOT use any of his iconic music in the biopic. Not sure if the film got made anyways, but it was reported on various movie sites about it. Or take a look at Eroll Flynn who starred as Robin Hood back in the golden days of Hollywood. He had an affair with a 15 year old girl named Beverly Aadland. And decades later after he died, there was a biopic about it called "the Last Robin Hood" that was supposed to go over what happened between him and his underage lover, but the problem was that since Beverly Aadland's estate never signed off on the biography book the film was based on, we never know little things from that movie like why Beverly flirted with another boy around her age when she was with him, nor do we ever know the full extent of their relationship. The point is that a lot of times when movie studios make biopics like these, they usually take liberties out of necessity sometimes either for dramatic effect as NC alluded to, or it's because of something like how they don't have certain rights to certain parts of that person's story like I just said. For we know, the Kaufman estate might've been absolute dicks and told them that the material they used was the only thing the studio could legally use. Meaning that whole TV fight with that woman that NC alluded to that got erased probably couldn't be used as the Kaufman estate may have forbidden it in their agreement, or maybe her estate didn't want to do it. Who knows? Just saying is all. Personally, I think "Man on the Moon " is a great movie, and even if it's not a 100 percent accurate, i do think it captures the spirit of who andy was which is that he was often a misunderstood comedic genius but that's just my opinion.

A lot of this feels like what the Critic was expecting the film to be as a Andy Kaufman fan. As someone who didn't know much about Kaufman I really liked the film and made me want to look into him more.
Your Staten island ending would have been a beautiful ending. I hope if anyone makes a more faithful film about him, they not only show the great, intelligent, snarky, and sly troll that he way... They should go with the ending you have imagined.. It would be powerful
Well they make a great Steve jobs film with Michael Fassbender after the disaster that was the jobs film with Ashton Kutcher, changes are posaible. And they both show the way in how to make a biopic right and a biopic wrong

He dialed the amp up to 11, when at most it goes to 10 but Andy was more often than not at 6. The whole "possession" thing made me lose respect for my childhood idol altogether. He was pretentious enough to speak to Andy's daughter he had never known. You can tell in the making of video that everyone just wanted to beat him down. Rant over. I do got an amp that goes up to 11 (I modified it thanks to spinal tap). And I hope that SOMEONE can do Andy justice, and show him as more than an awkward troll, but as someone loved by many, known by few, unsure if he faked his death, and with a depth to him that you can see in interviews. Jim TOTALLY botched it and shit on his legacy during his ego trip. I wonder who could play him well? My uncle thinks Jonah Hill could do it well. I think he's actually a good actor. Aku From the future I would pick Jason Segel. He has a similar look and vibe. He can also balance manic comedy with poignant dramatic performance which is what the role requires. I can totally see the Staten Island scene come alive with him in it. The director I would go with would be Jason Ponsoldt who made The Spectacular Now and The End of The Tour.
Showing a human without their faults seems to me to be as disrespectful as showing them as only their faults. You can't show half a human if you want to portray them.
Depends on if the faults are pertinent. Plus, just because you want to see it, doesn't make it disrespectful to not drag out every bit of dirty laundry. Not all of us are perverts that get off on the smell. No one expects a Hollywood "biopic" to be 100% accurate. And quite frankly most people just don't give a shit about his personal life. The movie did what it was supposed to do, tell a dramatized version of the entertaining parts of his life. There is NOTHING interesting about him before his career started taking off.

At first I was going to dislike this video because Man on the Moon was once my favorite movie (I didn’t actually know who Andy Kaufman was at the time), but now after watching this, I do wish they did some of what you were talking about. I’m just glad that you were able to point out flaws in a movie I love and still keep it good in my eyes. All the while having me agree with everything you were talking about. Great video.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time, not knowing Andy Kaufman at all. My favorite part was the intro sequence. It felt like something new and weird... And then it immediately became a normal movie.
I do love the movie but as I became an Andy Kaufman fan I thought the intro should have been the entire movie and it would be better if it actually ended there when the credits rolled.
I was more entertained by your explanation of the actual events and the footage you showed of those events than I was by the actual movie. This movie actually made me dislike Andy Kaufman, and you redeemed him in my eyes quite a bit. I really did misunderstand the guy.
That bit about Koffman’s manager playing DeVito’s character reminds me of the little moment in the first Goosebumps movie, when R.L. Stine made a cameo as a character named Mr. Black. It went by quick, but it was a good joke!
Theres a reason his comedy was never popular. And you nailed why right at the beginning. He got famous for his role on taxi. After that became a miniceleb because of his weirdness. Because of exactly that
It's almost as if it's being told from the POV of Devito's character. From his prospective, fully-formed Andy just suddenly came out of nowhere, and that's where the story starts in earnest. He's in on some of the gags while not being in on others, just like the audience is. Of course there are scenes where he doesn't appear, so it's not _strictly_ from his POV. But generally speaking, the movie shows him from the same medium-level vantage point that his manager seems to have of him.
I agree but there was a documentary on comedy central about Kaufmann that ran alot a few years before that. That's how I saw alot of those routines and I'm guessing that was the case with Doug as well.
Today there is UA-cam but in 99, outsider of America, it was impossible to see any of Kaufmans work except maybe reruns of Taxi. I’m surprised this movie did as well as it did outside of America as few ppl knew about him.

I disagree. Doug often times confuses the premise of a documentary and the premise of a movie. Documentaries give you full details, movies hit the high notes...this was a movie and a damn good one...they werent presenting it or trying to present it at a documentary at all

It’s not empty, it’s truth. Andy died tragically which is reality. The ending in the club shows he’s never been forgotten by either his friends or fans and I believe couldn’t of been better!

lurch321 Read the book. It’s annoying how much the writers took out, or changed. There is A SHIT TON of wasted potential with the film. Not to say it’s bad, but like Man on the Moon, the potential for a better story was massive
S.E.J, The Disaster Artist book was a great account of the events that occurred from Greg Sestero’s perspective. It translated better to audiobook form since Sestero handled the narration and did a dead-on impression of Tommy Wiseau. I was excited over the prospects of it being translated to film and I was gravely disappointed when James Franco got a hold of it, sorely because he treated The Room as a party favor and used this opportunity to make it more grand scale. Their biggest mistake was getting Wiseau involved in the making of it who provided nothing to it with his stupid ass comments like “I didn’t like how once scene was too dark looking, but it only looked that way because I was wearing sunglasses.” He sounds like the pain in the ass Sestero made him out in the book. I’m looking forward to seeing The Room Full of Spoons documentary that Wiseau tried to stop from being from being released as I’m sure it’ll confirm more of the shit Wiseau was pulling rather than the picture they tried to paint him as in the movie.
Damn, I've only watched the NC because he made me laughed and I loved his videos but this was the first time I realized he was actually a really good movie critic.

Like not paying enough attention to a movie he plans to review, missing key plot points or obvious simbolisms and moments that are important to the story. That's not always the case, and I do enjoy his videos because they're fun, but I never put too much stock in them. He's not always wrong, but when he is, it's no small detail. Ex: discounting the white wolf in Balto as a random creative choice, and not understanding the importance of that scene to Balto as a character, and being the reason why he accepts his lineage.
"If you know Andy Kaffman's work, you probably saw this movie as 'okay.' If you know Andy Kaufman's life, you saw this as a huge botched opportunity." I feel the same way about Tim Burton's Ed Wood. I really liked the movie, so much that I sought out the biography it's loosely based on, Nightmare of Ecstasy. After reading it, I couldn't finish the movie again, it was so disrespectful. Like all biopics, some things you assume they made up, really did happen, and a lot of small details had to be tweaked a bit to fit the structure of the story they were trying to tell. I'm fine with that. But where Burton and Depp really screw up (and I'm placing the bulk of the blame with them, even though a lot of this comes from the script) is in how they characterize Wood. This is not a loving tribute to complicated man who lived a hard life of seemingly endless failure. It's a joke, and often very mean-spirited. I won't go into all the ways they point and laugh at his person, but check out Maggie Mae Fish's video on Tim Burton if you want a brief overview. And I highly recommend Nightmare of Ecstasy. Great biography. Very well-argued video, Doug. Keep up the good work.

Including that ingenious line, this sure has been an interesting NC episode! :o You really seem to respect this guy's comedy, and it's very nice to see such a detailed dive into how many interesting moments they could have had. Honestly hearing about that crowd pulling one over on Kauffman was really sweet and I agree, I think it would have made for a great emotional moment at the end there. I wonder why they didn't include it? Because it would've been too perfect as an ending but they wanted to address the false medical practitioner? They wanted it to have a dour ending? I don't quite get it myself. A real shame.
The point I think you are missing Critic is that for many of us this was our introduction introduction to Andy Kauffman. I think that is the dividing line. Seeing this movie opened my eyes into the greatness that was Andy. For me that fact that I got to see Jim Carrey do those acts and then go find Andy doing them originally was amazing. Although, having now gone through the rabbit hole of all of his acts and seeing it again I can understand your point. This movie was for those of us who were not aware of the greatness of Andy. And also to remind us who know him why he was special.

The grinch from jim Carrey was also my introduction of the character of the grinch, just like the star wars prequels was my introduction of star wars, and Brian singer X-Men was for the x-men.... But just because it was your first expouser dosn't mean it could have beeing so much better compare to the sources are based on. Nostalgia Is a very dangerous thing to a moviegoer because its blind you the fault from what you grew up with, just as it make you hate new stuff that Made the same mistakes from the things that you grew up with making you look like a unconscious hipocrite.
Think the formula of making a movie that has an informative and entertaining story for those who know nothing about Andy/those who know a lot about Andy would only work as a long TV movie. Like how they did the Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 movie. Hope someone gives it a try one day.

I used to work at a video store. When Man on the Moon premiered we had one copy, but Space Truckers we had 80 copies. I don't know why , but I always found that hilarious.

I mean, it's normal for some people to have never heard of someone that may have been before their time. So it's perfectly reasonable if you've never heard of him till now. But you calling people "Boomers" before they even say anything, isn't exactly necessary and just shows you're young and clinging to the hip new meme the internet has been focusing on currently.
You probably shouldn't eat while watching it. It might have tons of disgusting toilet humor like other movies similar to it. There will probably be a gross-out/product placement scene of Sonic taking a piss in a bottle of Mountain Dew, and then a thirsty Tom takes a sip from it and says, "Man, this tastes vinegary."
I was 15 when this movie came out. None of my friends had any idea who this was. I dragged every last one of them to the theater, if only to prove I wasn't crazy. Back then, I was lucky that my father recorded everything on VHS that he could. I had a great collection to grow up with. But nobody else that I knew could see any of this anywhere but my house. I appreciated the changes that made Andy more understandable to my friends. In 1999, you'd be hard pressed to see him anywhere else... unless you were still rocking BBS before that got shut down.
RULE NO 1 of Hollywood 'based on a true story' they're NEVER based on the true story merely based on a Hollywood condensed version full of half truths or blatant lies for dramatic purposes. Which is what the intro to "Man on the Moon" mocks at the very start of the film. End of the day no movie can ever sum up the full life or depth of any human being. Best to refer to these films as distillations and tributes to the people they are about.

I understand what you're saying, Critic, but at the same time I still really like this movie (though "People vs. Larry Flint"' is my favorite Milos Forman biopic). Though I suspect that this film was also made in a way for people who don't know Kaufman to have an intro to the entertainer. I'm not sure that is 100% true, though for what the filmmakers achieved, I think they did very well. Also, thank you for briefly mentioning my favorite movie of all time, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
Isn’t it kinda funny that the child version of Jim Carrey’s character was concerned that cameras were in the walls and that his whole life was being filmed?
Once you binge Kaufman’s routines, seeing Carrey’s total disregard for the deadpan aspect of Kaufman’s comedy is pretty hard to ignore. The best aspect of his Dr. Robotnik is the worst aspect of his Andy Kaufman.
It sounds like Andy Kaufman the real person was kind of a nutcase and a jerk. I think the movie was intended as more of a love letter to Andy than something introspective.
I thought it was the other way around. As in - the movie made this guy sound like a weird jerk. I wasn't familiar with Andy Kaufman when I watched this.
This might be my favorite review as you have a passion not seen in other videos. You care about the man being represented in this movie and the fact you want to do him justice is nice and sweet. You take it seriously, and I could tell in the review. Your critiques come off as more genuine because you care so much. That's why I like it. That's all I have to say. Here's the most insulting thing about this movie: In the weeks leading up to its release, Comedy Central ran a daily special about Kaufman featuring highlights of his career. So imagine my disappointment when, upon going to the theatre, what I got was a higher budget version of that special.
I watched this movie with my mom when I was 13 and it introduced me to Andy, he quickly became a favorite of mine. I also really liked this type of review compared to the other Nostalgia critic videos, I hope you do more.
Fantastic review! As a German, when I first saw this movie, it was not clear to me that this was a biopic. I had never heard of Andy Kaufman and just thought that this is a whimsical fantasy. Nevertheless, it felt totally empty handed and arbitrary. Especially the editing was terrible. You are totally right, this could have been a great movie, bit it absolutely didn't happen.

Andy was a performer who didn't want to get laughs, but reactions. Of any kind. If he made you believe in his act he got what he wanted. The fact that some people genuinely believe he's still alive 30 years later makes him in my opinion one of the greatest performers that's ever lived.
I enjoyed the movie but I didn't know anything about Andy going into it.
That's what this movie is made for, and that's what can destroy his whole argument as to why the movie "doesn't work".

I loved this movie before I did research on Andy. I had the same opinion on Patch Adams. Loved the film before I did research on the guy and watched it again. Both don’t hold up for me anymore.

God damn, I actually started to cry at the idea of the movie ending with 300+ people pulling that trick on him.
I just want to point out that when I saw this movie, I had no idea who Andy Koufman was. Having the routines in there that "everyone knows" helped me. You might know them, and might question how other would not, but not everyone does, and as time goes on, the number of people that know the routines is going to go down, not up. They kinda need to be in here.
Snacker6 yeah when I first saw the film I didn’t know who Andy Kaufman was either so those scenes were totally new to me. But it wouldn’t have hurt the film to put the scenes no one knew about in there. I think to Doug’s point it would’ve made it more interesting. Why show one thing and leave out the other?! Thank you! I was thinking the same thing... I was just a kid when I saw this movie the first time and didn't know Andy Kaufman at all. This movie not only became one of my favorites but it also was highly formative for me during my teenage years. I never would have even had an interest in Kaufman or his work without this movie and I was inspired to learn more about him because of it.
@@Gsevenreviews Yeah but the problem is that its not that easy. A lot of times when you make biopics like this you have to get the permission of the estates that own the person's work currently; especially when they're dead. Take Jimmy Hendrix for example. He's a famous musician yet when a famous movie studio tried to make a biopic about him, his estate said they'd only allow if the movie studio agreed to NOT use any of his iconic music in the biopic. Not sure if the film got made anyways, but it was reported on various movie sites about it.
Or take a look at Eroll Flynn who starred as Robin Hood back in the golden days of Hollywood. He had an affair with a 15 year old girl named Beverly Aadland. And decades later after he died, there was a biopic about it called "the Last Robin Hood" that was supposed to go over what happened between him and his underage lover, but the problem was that since Beverly Aadland's estate never signed off on the biography book the film was based on, we never know little things from that movie like why Beverly flirted with another boy around her age when she was with him, nor do we ever know the full extent of their relationship.
The point is that a lot of times when movie studios make biopics like these, they usually take liberties out of necessity sometimes either for dramatic effect as NC alluded to, or it's because of something like how they don't have certain rights to certain parts of that person's story like I just said.
For we know, the Kaufman estate might've been absolute dicks and told them that the material they used was the only thing the studio could legally use. Meaning that whole TV fight with that woman that NC alluded to that got erased probably couldn't be used as the Kaufman estate may have forbidden it in their agreement, or maybe her estate didn't want to do it. Who knows? Just saying is all.
Personally, I think "Man on the Moon " is a great movie, and even if it's not a 100 percent accurate, i do think it captures the spirit of who andy was which is that he was often a misunderstood comedic genius but that's just my opinion.

A lot of this feels like what the Critic was expecting the film to be as a Andy Kaufman fan. As someone who didn't know much about Kaufman I really liked the film and made me want to look into him more.

I hope SOMEONE makes a new Kaufman film, as in my opinion (I'm 28 and never knew Andy or anyone close to him. I just have seen candid interviews), he got the character of him all wrong from what I've seen.
Sure, he was a bit uncomfortable and played a pretentious jerk everywhere... but he wasn't the super shifty eyed weirdo Carrey made him out to be.
He dialed the amp up to 11, when at most it goes to 10 but Andy was more often than not at 6.
The whole "possession" thing made me lose respect for my childhood idol altogether. He was pretentious enough to speak to Andy's daughter he had never known.
You can tell in the making of video that everyone just wanted to beat him down.

Aku From the future I would pick Jason Segel. He has a similar look and vibe. He can also balance manic comedy with poignant dramatic performance which is what the role requires. I can totally see the Staten Island scene come alive with him in it. The director I would go with would be Jason Ponsoldt who made The Spectacular Now and The End of The Tour.

No one expects a Hollywood "biopic" to be 100% accurate. And quite frankly most people just don't give a shit about his personal life. The movie did what it was supposed to do, tell a dramatized version of the entertaining parts of his life. There is NOTHING interesting about him before his career started taking off.
Unfortunately this is something Hollywood still fails to learn. In fact, they're failing even harder at it now!

At first I was going to dislike this video because Man on the Moon was once my favorite movie (I didn’t actually know who Andy Kaufman was at the time), but now after watching this, I do wish they did some of what you were talking about. I remember seeing this movie for the first time, not knowing Andy Kaufman at all. My favorite part was the intro sequence. It felt like something new and weird... And then it immediately became a normal movie.
I do love the movie but as I became an Andy Kaufman fan I thought the intro should have been the entire movie and it would be better if it actually ended there when the credits rolled.
I was more entertained by your explanation of the actual events and the footage you showed of those events than I was by the actual movie. This movie actually made me dislike Andy Kaufman, and you redeemed him in my eyes quite a bit. I really did misunderstand the guy.
I consider this as my least favorite Jim Carrey movie because of that.
That bit about Koffman’s manager playing DeVito’s character reminds me of the little moment in the first Goosebumps movie, when R.L. Stine made a cameo as a character named Mr. Black. It went by quick, but it was a good joke!

Theres a reason his comedy was never popular. And you nailed why right at the beginning. He got famous for his role on taxi. After that became a miniceleb because of his weirdness. Because of exactly that
It's almost as if it's being told from the POV of Devito's character. From his prospective, fully-formed Andy just suddenly came out of nowhere, and that's where the story starts in earnest. He's in on some of the gags while not being in on others, just like the audience is. Of course there are scenes where he doesn't appear, so it's not _strictly_ from his POV. But generally speaking, the movie shows him from the same medium-level vantage point that his manager seems to have of him.
Defending the movie: i would say that finding footage of all of the bits would actually not be easily accessible back when the movie was made.

I agree but there was a documentary on comedy central about Kaufmann that ran alot a few years before that. That's how I saw alot of those routines and I'm guessing that was the case with Doug as well.
Today there is UA-cam but in 99, outsider of America, it was impossible to see any of Kaufmans work except maybe reruns of Taxi. I’m surprised this movie did as well as it did outside of America as few ppl knew about him.

I disagree. Doug often times confuses the premise of a documentary and the premise of a movie. Documentaries give you full details, movies hit the high notes...this was a movie and a damn good one...they werent presenting it or trying to present it at a documentary at all

Read the book. It’s annoying how much the writers took out, or changed. There is A SHIT TON of wasted potential with the film. Not to say it’s bad, but like Man on the Moon, the potential for a better story was massive
S.E.J, The Disaster Artist book was a great account of the events that occurred from Greg Sestero’s perspective. It translated better to audiobook form since Sestero handled the narration and did a dead-on impression of Tommy Wiseau. I was excited over the prospects of it being translated to film and I was gravely disappointed when James Franco got a hold of it, sorely because he treated The Room as a party favor and used this opportunity to make it more grand scale.
Their biggest mistake was getting Wiseau involved in the making of it who provided nothing to it with his stupid ass comments like “I didn’t like how once scene was too dark looking, but it only looked that way because I was wearing sunglasses.” He sounds like the pain in the ass Sestero made him out in the book.
I’m looking forward to seeing The Room Full of Spoons documentary that Wiseau tried to stop from being from being released as I’m sure it’ll confirm more of the shit Wiseau was pulling rather than the picture they tried to paint him as in the movie.
Kamdan I’ve seen the Room Full of Spoons doc and it’s a lot better than the sanitized Disaster Artist movie.

Like not paying enough attention to a movie he plans to review, missing key plot points or obvious simbolisms and moments that are important to the story. That's not always the case, and I do enjoy his videos because they're fun, but I never put too much stock in them.
He's not always wrong, but when he is, it's no small detail. Ex: discounting the white wolf in Balto as a random creative choice, and not understanding the importance of that scene to Balto as a character, and being the reason why he accepts his lineage.
i'll admit some of your ideas would've made this better, but it's not a bad movie and it could introduce people to his work.

I feel the same way about Tim Burton's Ed Wood. I really liked the movie, so much that I sought out the biography it's loosely based on, Nightmare of Ecstasy. After reading it, I couldn't finish the movie again, it was so disrespectful. Like all biopics, some things you assume they made up, really did happen, and a lot of small details had to be tweaked a bit to fit the structure of the story they were trying to tell. I'm fine with that. But where Burton and Depp really screw up (and I'm placing the bulk of the blame with them, even though a lot of this comes from the script) is in how they characterize Wood. This is not a loving tribute to complicated man who lived a hard life of seemingly endless failure. It's a joke, and often very mean-spirited. I won't go into all the ways they point and laugh at his person, but check out Maggie Mae Fish's video on Tim Burton if you want a brief overview.
And I highly recommend Nightmare of Ecstasy. Great biography.

Including that ingenious line, this sure has been an interesting NC episode! :o You really seem to respect this guy's comedy, and it's very nice to see such a detailed dive into how many interesting moments they could have had. Honestly hearing about that crowd pulling one over on Kauffman was really sweet and I agree, I think it would have made for a great emotional moment at the end there. I wonder why they didn't include it? Because it would've been too perfect as an ending but they wanted to address the false medical practitioner? They wanted it to have a dour ending? I don't quite get it myself. A real shame.

The point I think you are missing Critic is that for many of us this was our introduction introduction to Andy Kauffman. I think that is the dividing line. Seeing this movie opened my eyes into the greatness that was Andy. For me that fact that I got to see Jim Carrey do those acts and then go find Andy doing them originally was amazing.
Although, having now gone through the rabbit hole of all of his acts and seeing it again I can understand your point.
This movie was for those of us who were not aware of the greatness of Andy. And also to remind us who know him why he was special.
Except if the movie was more faithful it would have been better and still served its purpose of introducing you to Andy.

The grinch from jim Carrey was also my introduction of the character of the grinch, just like the star wars prequels was my introduction of star wars, and Brian singer X-Men was for the x-men.... But just because it was your first expouser dosn't mean it could have beeing so much better compare to the sources are based on. Nostalgia Is a very dangerous thing to a moviegoer because its blind you the fault from what you grew up with, just as it make you hate new stuff that Made the same mistakes from the things that you grew up with making you look like a unconscious hipocrite.
Think the formula of making a movie that has an informative and entertaining story for those who know nothing about Andy/those who know a lot about Andy would only work as a long TV movie. Like how they did the Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 movie. Hope someone gives it a try one day.

I used to work at a video store. When Man on the Moon premiered we had one copy, but Space Truckers we had 80 copies. I don't know why , but I always found that hilarious.

It's not that they didn't get along, he and everyone else was subject to Jim Carrey's antics as Kaufman. Jerry Lawler was the one who didn't get along with Carrey
If Andy Kaufman was around today......I don't think even he could stand up against the horror of the internet because all it would take is one tweet or something and he would have imploded in seconds.
Andy Kaufman would fit in on the internet just fine. He would've been finding ways to fuck with people before the internet trolls even learned how to do it.
I think he would actually enjoy trolling people all the time. The real troll thrives against the odds. Today's pc culture would be the perfect enviroment for Kaufman. A joke stops beeing funny when everybody knows it's a joke and takes it as one.

I didn't know any of this. The film is basically the Secretariat biopic from _Bojack Horseman_ by sugaring all the seedy/rough moments.

You probably shouldn't eat while watching it. It might have tons of disgusting toilet humor like other movies similar to it. There will probably be a gross-out/product placement scene of Sonic taking a piss in a bottle of Mountain Dew, and then a thirsty Tom takes a sip from it and says, "Man, this tastes vinegary."

I was 15 when this movie came out. None of my friends had any idea who this was. I dragged every last one of them to the theater, if only to prove I wasn't crazy. Back then, I was lucky that my father recorded everything on VHS that he could. I had a great collection to grow up with. But nobody else that I knew could see any of this anywhere but my house. I appreciated the changes that made Andy more understandable to my friends. In 1999, you'd be hard pressed to see him anywhere else... unless you were still rocking BBS before that got shut down.

RULE NO 1 of Hollywood 'based on a true story' they're NEVER based on the true story merely based on a Hollywood condensed version full of half truths or blatant lies for dramatic purposes.
Which is what the intro to "Man on the Moon" mocks at the very start of the film.
End of the day no movie can ever sum up the full life or depth of any human being.
Best to refer to these films as distillations and tributes to the people they are about.

I understand what you're saying, Critic, but at the same time I still really like this movie (though "People vs. Larry Flint"' is my favorite Milos Forman biopic). Though I suspect that this film was also made in a way for people who don't know Kaufman to have an intro to the entertainer. I'm not sure that is 100% true, though for what the filmmakers achieved, I think they did very well. Also, thank you for briefly mentioning my favorite movie of all time, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".

I knew nothing about Andy Kaufman until I saw this review, but wow that Staten Island thing should've been in the movie. That's an incredible story.
Once you binge Kaufman’s routines, seeing Carrey’s total disregard for the deadpan aspect of Kaufman’s comedy is pretty hard to ignore.
The best aspect of his Dr. Robotnik is the worst aspect of his Andy Kaufman.

It sounds like Andy Kaufman the real person was kind of a nutcase and a jerk. I think the movie was intended as more of a love letter to Andy than something introspective.
I thought it was the other way around. As in - the movie made this guy sound like a weird jerk. I wasn't familiar with Andy Kaufman when I watched this.
This might be my favorite review as you have a passion not seen in other videos. You care about the man being represented in this movie and the fact you want to do him justice is nice and sweet. You take it seriously, and I could tell in the review. Your critiques come off as more genuine because you care so much. That's why I like it. That's all I have to say. Here's the most insulting thing about this movie: In the weeks leading up to its release, Comedy Central ran a daily special about Kaufman featuring highlights of his career. So imagine my disappointment when, upon going to the theatre, what I got was a higher budget version of that special.
I'm glad that Sonic joke aged poorly, Carrey was easily the best part about those movies.

I watched this movie with my mom when I was 13 and it introduced me to Andy, he quickly became a favorite of mine. I also really liked this type of review compared to the other Nostalgia critic videos, I hope you do more.
Fantastic review! As a German, when I first saw this movie, it was not clear to me that this was a biopic. I had never heard of Andy Kaufman and just thought that this is a whimsical fantasy. Nevertheless, it felt totally empty handed and arbitrary. Especially the editing was terrible. You are totally right, this could have been a great movie, bit it absolutely didn't happen.
