Danny DeVito is a national treasure. The pride of Jersey! Sweetest, nicest guy on the planet. A true artist who cares about people, story and entertaining all of us.
Danny, hit it on the head. Andy wasn't a comedian, I rarely laughed out loud at his stuff...but as a performance artist he was an absolute genius. Unparalleled and unsurpassed to this day. Thanks Andy.
@@sullywinn4225 Yes, Andy Kaufman was funny, no doubt about that. But humor is subjective, right? Your version of 'funny' does not have to align with mine and vice-versa, and that's toally fine, we both can still be right within the confines of our bad takes on what humor is. But he was also a brilliant performance artist. IMHO Andy was not really aiming for the laughs, he was crafting a mind-bending experience. I don't even think he took the audience into consideration most of the times, he was just performing for the sake of performance. To me, that’s pure genius, it’s like he was playing 3D chess while everyone else was playing checkers. So, yeah, he was hilarious, but he was also so much more than that. He was an performance artist, through and through.
Andy was not interested in being funny. He was interested in shaking you up, and if all you got out of it was funny, you're a disappointment. His goal was to pull the ground out from under your feet, make you defensive and slightly appalled, force you to address your own preconceptions. I'm not being clever. He said so.
Peter Knows youtube Wellander you are very lucky to live in those days! I wish I could of been Born in your time as everyone now a days is on their phones 24/7 nothing special about this generation
I saw 'Man on the moon' for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant film, Jim Carrey was brilliant as Andy Kaufman, didn't know anything about Kaufman before seeing the film and saw some side by side comparisons of real life Kaufman footage next to Carrey as Kaufman and saw how brilliant both Kaufman and Carrey were and still are.
Very good point. He "broke on through to the other side." It's scary, though. There's something very scary about losing oneself for the sake of creative expression.
What a great interview. This was so good from Danny's side of it. You can really tell how he loved Andy and how he really loved Jim's performance of Andy.... I love this movie. It is one of my favorites of all time....
Great interview. I went and saw Andy Kaufman at the Improv so many times. Very strange...wouldn’t talk to anyone else at the bar. All his performances were so offbeat. Also saw Freddie Prinze and Jimmy JJ Walker there.. fun times.
Agreed. But did you watch that doc about the making of the movie.... Jim is a nightmare... and everyone complained during the making of the film that he wasn't capturing Andy at all, and just being a bully method actor. That might be the reason.
Absolutely entertaining. Taxi. Man On The Moon. Wonderful. We had a tuff life in the 70's. We all knew to be quiet when Taxi was on. My Dad laughed until he cried😂❤
When he says, "Andy came to the set or Tony, not Jim." To fully appreciate that you would have to see "Jim and Andy" the documentary on how much Jim went into Andy. He came as Andy for everyone there, the cast, crew, anyone that knew Andy and wanted to meet him. Andy's daughter that never met her father.
The tears that start to form in Mr. DeVito's eyes as he is relegating the story of Carol Kane poking Andy in the coffin as she didn't believe he was dead just shows how much Danny loved him and had hoped it was the best prank ever pulled by Andy on his friends.
I drove for a cab company on the west side of manhattan in the 70's. We had characters just like the TV show Taxi, including a "Starter" who was a short bald headed man who towered over us behind a glass window in an elevated booth just like louie. You had to "shape up" which meant you had to wait a few hours for an available cab, so there were all sorts of characters sitting around for several hours a day. I was floored by the TV show - it was so true to life for me.
Devito wiping his tears... I did too hearing how powerful he was. I wish I could see the craziness. We're only here for so long. We have to take advantage before it's gone.
Danny DeVito must be one of the sweetest guys in Hollywood. Gives full credit to screenwriters, a gentleman to interviewers, lovely to his fans, the stories about how he and Rhea cared for Mara Wilson during Matilda. This is a great interview.
Taxi, Cuckoos Nest, Throw Mama From the Train, Batman Returns, Matilda, It’s Always Sunny….. this man owns a chamber of my heart for the amazing memories he imparted, and continues to impart, through his work. I love him as though he’s a member of my own family, and I’m so grateful such a wonderful artist exists.
Sometime during the mid 1970's I saw Andy at a small club on Long Island named My Father's Place. The reaction John Belushi described to Danny is the same reaction the audience had at that club. For a while, no one was sure if Andy was putting us on or if he was really that awkward foreign guy. Right at the moment when everyone was convinced that what Andy needed was a to be given the hook, he did his Elvis impersonation and the audience reacted the same way in which the scene is portrayed in Man On The Moon. That night, Andy was the opening act for a popular musician and he made such an impression that he was the only thing anyone could talk about at the end of the night. I cannot recall who the main act was!
Someone with whom Andy worked who really understood what he was doing was Jerry Lawler. Check out some shoot interviews with him discussing working with Kaufman. Andy was a huge fan of professional wrestling, and had a tremendous instinct for drawing heat as a heel. He could also draw the sympathy of a babyface. He was a walking wrestling promo. Hollywood wasn’t ready for that.
Interesting interview, of how a film project germinates, big name director and production co, finances first, players next, and the principal actor, & strong screenplay, most important, well done♡
Danny is one of the best . He’s really a class act . I’ve liked him from the first time I saw him in twins back in 87 or 88 when I was 7. Then later seeing Louis Depalma and of course cuckoo‘s nest. I was hooked .
Danny is a brilliant storyteller- that’s not easy to captivate an audience- but for those who have a passion for what they’re sharing you feel the love, that genius and generous 🥰
Greatest movie I ever see "Man on the moon" , Danny Devito is talking truth, Jim Carrey did brilliant job. Thanks to Danny Devito giving us this incredible experience.
What an incredibly generous interview; given how much Kaufman screwed the cast and production crew of Taxi around so much. De Vito is one of the most considered and articulate actors around IMO.
It actually brings tears to my eyes to hear him describe how the film got going, and his feelings about “a sweet guy,” the inimitable, inscrutable Andy Kaufman.
I am a writer, and former producer/host of TV shows. As I watch Danny, I'm thinking that Danny as himself is a superb character...quieter, more nuanced. The film Man On The Moon is one of my favorites, and I think Carey's Tony Clifton is the funniest of all those created...including Kaufman's. Jim took the craziness to a bit higher level, where Andy's Clifton was a bit more subdued. But to get Clifton, you see, you have to go to the moon.
So Andy, did you hear about this one? Tell me, are you locked in the punch? Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis? "Hey, baby" Are you having fun? If you believed they put a man on the moon (Man on the moon) If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve Then nothing is cool
a. Incredible preface and praise Mister Rose. b. Very eloquent words Mister DeVito Thank you for your incredible contributions Andy... You reinvented the wheel, sir. Wasn't Carrey something else concerning this project? Lol Danny's Tony Clifton
I’m a brit,I watched taxi in the 70s on our tv late night Friday, 16 years old ,loved everything about it,oh those characters, and marilu was my first fantasy
Seriously, is there anybody who does not like Danny? This is a great interview. You can tell he's speaking out of love and from the heart about Andy.
bleep77
He's unapologetically a socialist so I imagine there's a whole bunch of people who don't like him. (But they're cunts.)
uhhhh the fact he's a socialist is what shows how great a human danny is... so yes, they're certainly cunts if they disagree
agreed, things look wonderful in North Korea
No but they look pretty decent in the Nordic Country's
Russell Payne
Oh look, another dumb fuck unintentional white supremacist promoting all white nations as socialist utopias
Danny DeVito is a national treasure. The pride of Jersey! Sweetest, nicest guy on the planet. A true artist who cares about people, story and entertaining all of us.
Completely agree.
I just like listening to Danny tell Andy stories. He's a great story teller and he loves Andy. It's just great
Kelly Pagano yes this is my second time watching
This is a great interview, I love how the man just let Danny speak without interrupting him.
Oliver G-Byrne well, sort of.
chuck rose is the real deal
he was probably busy fondling an intern.
+MotherAce well he is a sparkplug of a oxyincontinant loverslug
not if i got to them first

Can’t remember the last time I watched a whole 30 minute interview without pausing it. Well done!
Danny, hit it on the head. Andy wasn't a comedian, I rarely laughed out loud at his stuff...but as a performance artist he was an absolute genius. Unparalleled and unsurpassed to this day. Thanks Andy.
Pretentious nonsense. He was absolutely LOL funny. His Letterman appearances are some of the funniest things I've ever seen.
@@sullywinn4225 Yes, Andy Kaufman was funny, no doubt about that. But humor is subjective, right? This interview was 16 years after Andy died. Can you believe it's been 18 years since this interview? Crazy
Kelly Pagano you are good at math.
Don't ask so many questions.
Peter Knows youtube Wellander you are very lucky to live in those days! I wish I could of been Born in your time as everyone now a days is on their phones 24/7 nothing special about this generation
Kelly Pagano ty I was very curious of the time frame of this interview. That's wild!
My mind is just.... blown..... time is such an interesting concept.
What a fantastic interview and isn't it wonderfully sadly sweet to see how emotional Danny is when talking about his friend.
If there's a Nobel Peace Prize for comedy then Andy, Danny & Jim should share it!!! What a brilliant interview full of joy & pathos!!👍✌️
There is an Andy Kaufman award for best new comic of the year.
Andy broke the fourth wall, not of the film set but of life.
Fathoms2004 well put.
Fathoms2004 for reals
Fathoms2004 5 wall
Fathoms2004 Completely and totally agree
Very good point. He "broke on through to the other side." It's scary, though. There's something very scary about losing oneself for the sake of creative expression.

I LOVE devito's take on the idea of genius. He's truly such a treasure. I'd love to meet this man one day
That was a really enjoyable interview. Nice one, thanks :)
Thanks a lot for this interview... ❤️💯
My wife and I just watched the movie last night, and loved it!
Great interview. I went and saw Andy Kaufman at the Improv so many times. Very strange...wouldn’t talk to anyone else at the bar. All his performances were so offbeat. Also saw Freddie Prinze and Jimmy JJ Walker there.. fun times.
Jim was absolutely robbed, disrespected, sidelined... He deserved the Oscar for his work in Man on the Moon and the Academy snubbed him.
Shoulda gone retard
Great interview. Thanks for the video.
Why are there thumbs down for this video? Don’t understand. Great listening to Danny.
Love Danny! (and Andy!) Great interview!

What incredible interview and footage thank you so very much
Danny so cool, great interview. Speaking about Andy with reverence.. cA
Tony Clifton needs to guest star on an episode of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
atari.io Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton is in every episode of It's Always Sunny, in spirit :)
That would be HILARIOUS!!
In the first two minutes of the interview Danny says “Charlie” and “wild card”
Jim C you up for a prank ? 😂
That would be epic
Danny´s impression of Milos Forman is amazing and so accurate.
Love Danny, a great guy, and his wife Reah, two brilliant actors, and really grounded people, grew up watching Taxi, but Danny is great in everything.
It is amazing that this interview was 1999 ! The last century ( 20th ) . Seems so long ago. Andy Kaufman was a absolute genius!
i love danny devito.he is amazing.i loved him as the penguin.he is one of my favorite movie stars.

I guess I need to rewatch Man in the Moon!

Some people refer to multiple personality disorder...I think Andy had multiple personality IN-order...what a talent
It's 2018 and I miss Andy still..misunderstood
I really enjoyed this
Danny is right. At 17:05 he mentions Andy was bombing and you felt sorry for the guy. Thats what Andy was looking for. Your emotions, he had you.
I love that song.
The genuis shouldnt make me tearup but it always does
Danny DeVito was carved out of the mists of time.
Beautiful homage to Andy Kaufman. To think that they thought Andy might be pulling a prank at his own funeral.
amazing movie. amazing performances by everyone in it.

Lol Danny's Tony Clifton
This movie treatment handles ANDY like he was some surreal painting and a clever fiction.
Great movie!
Andy Kaufman was born before his time - Casting Carey as Kaufman was genius! 👏👏👏👏👏
“Thanks Charlie”
