About 35 years ago I was living in Huntington Beach, CA. and went into a little coffee shop and there was Bill Alexander! I said hello and told him I was a fan and he was very pleasantly surprised. Really a very nice and gentle soul!!
I'm 70 now and watched both these great artists. I don't think Bob Ross stole Bill Alexander's style. As his student, a student grows up and carries on the mission and enhances it if he can. Bob Ross did give credit to Bill Alexander in the early years. My construction superintendent went out there one year on vacation and came back so proud he had painted a mountain and trees. My superintendent didn't have an artistic bone in his body but Bill Alexander showed him how and he did it. Both had the same physique. Big burly guys you'd never suspect of having artistic veins. Their value to us through the years has been to inspire us and encourage us to bring out our own joy of painting and creating. They did me. And it is true, there is a joy in seeing the colors mix together and paintings materialize before our eyes. And joy does fill us as we leave behind our worlds of worry, concerns, pain. I've gone on to other styles, but these two gave me my start for which I am grateful. Today on UA-cam we can see so many outstanding artists with various styles from different countries...and some of what they are doing is just mind-blowing. But Bill Alexander stands heads taller. He still makes me laugh.
Meticularius With all due respect to sir,I totally agree with u about first Bill Alexander, then Bob Ross,.But my deepest greatful gratitude is for Bill.Because in India we are very very Philosophical .So in Bill I find that he is genuine, true to his heart and honest and straightforwardly. And his Art reflects his inner nature. He is a giver......all the secrets of art.....gives u happiness to live and paint joyfully. We say in Sanskrit ,Sarve Bhavantu Skhinava.Let all the people of the universe be happy. That Attitude I find in Bill Alexander. My Namaste to him!!!!
Bob always spoke highly of Bill and gave him full credit for teaching him the technique. Bill said Bob betrayed him and stole this wet on wet technique that he (Bill) invented. Wet on wet dates back to the 15th century.😆
I always love to watch and listen to this funny, quircky, little man with the mighty power of artistic talent and inspiration. Bill Alexander, yiu are loved by many, and your memory and legacy lives on among us. Many many thanks Bill. 😊❤
My drunk neighbor literally JUST told me about this guy tonight. Omg, I've watched Bob Ross my entire life, but I've never heard of this guy?! What?! PBS was my jam growing up... just glad I found him now, tho! Thanks drunk Doug! 💙🌠
This is great! I had never seen William Alexander before. Bob Ross's virtue was his smoothness, but Alexander had a more painterly, almost expressionistic style that I really like. His clouds are very El Greco-like.
So happy to find William Alexander again! My husband and I enjoyed his show (on PBS?) back in the 80's. He and his "happy little trees" or "happy little trail", mountains, lakes, sea and his charming descriptions of his work mesmerized us both. Lost track of him some time later in the decade, then was confused when Bob Ross appeared and used Alexander's patter and, surprise, "happy little" everything. Bob Ross certainly has his commendable style and manner, but Alexander was the first and, personal opinion, the best. Thanks so much for making the original "happy painter" accessible to us again.
I forgot about this show! Watched it while waiting for Sesame Street to start! I went around imitating how Bill Alexander say "Alizarin Crimson"! Such a fun show!!
I've always enjoyed watching William Alexander, and Bob Ross, 2 different persona, both masters were always at the top of their game. Classy gentlemen. What blessings they have been & are to the world.
My first time to watch your tutorial, I loved watching you teaching,I learnt so much.you are fantastic, thank you so much, yes we do have that creative power to make ourselves so happy while we paint.
I rarely saw him on tv. I found his big, loud presence scary. But I'm happy his painting vids still exist. I can't believe the station taped over a bunch of them.
KOCE-TV wiped "Magic" from existence [to bad they couldn’t save the episodes for future reruns] However, the "Art of William Alexander" series is intact & being stored by Alexander Art
It took me this long to find out this is where it all began for Bob Ross. I knew he credited Bill Alexander for teaching him the method and how he used his inspiration to do The Joy of Painting. Now, I get to see Mr. Alexander in action here. Bob never discredited Bill Alexander, he just carried the inspiration. Both of them helped us understand the alla prima (wet-on-wet) technique of oil painting, and both did a sensational job in sharing their love of painting.
I'm nostalgic for the 80's/90's when stuff like this was on PBS broadcast over the airwaves on your manual channel changer TV with 6 or 7 channels. A simpler time. Before the digital age.
As far as instructing and teaching, Bill wins out -- he breaks down and communicates the techniques more clearly and effectively.... (I attribute those skills to his "Deutsch-ness.")
I love this guy. Hes a huge part of me along with Bob. This is the original God of painting we miss you Bill. Rest in peace man. Hope you an bob.are having fun painting landscapes for us in heaven! R.I.P. ♥️
….it’s the fan brush …the magic brush technique that is so useful. No matter what level you are on…..Alexander and Ross can help you, especially as a beginner. Keep watching over and over and the techniques get memorized in your brain! Their videos give me much peace….
Bill: Master of water Bob Ross: Master of trees Steve(Bob's son): master of mountains The unbeatable trio! Would be awsome if Bill and Bob were still alive so they could combine their powers into one painting
I watched Bill on PBS back in the '70s / '80s, and I don't ever remember seeing him use his finger. I certainly don't remember him referring to it as his 'almighty finger' !!! LOL !!!
How very sad that there was negativity between Bob Ross & Bill, this is something that should of never happened, I mean Bob picked up quite a bit from Bill, evidently this should not have upset Bill, it should of made him proud, that he was such a great artist & teacher, I enjoyed them both very much, the world is big enough for both valued painters & there is no one like either of them in our world. In my opinion Bob still did have his own personality as did Bill.
Bill hated Bob because he opened his own brand of paints when the show was meant to advertise Bills products, but Bob wanted in on that money. The move effectively destroyed Bills buisness The company also managed to alienate Bobs son to the point he vowed never to paint again. It sucks really
True. But I think the animosity happened when Bob Ross and his business partner created the Bob Ross art line. Supposedly, or so the story goes, Bob Ross's popularity grew to such an extend that the supplier of art materials couldn't keep up. So Bob and his partner created a line of products with his image on them. This then meant Bill was cut out from what would have been a nice revenue stream. It is sad, but these things happen. Personally I've learned a lot from both of them. And both died before their time.
Nope and nope. Bill was upset that Bob started his own line of products. He said he felt betrayed because now Bob is now a direct competitor. And also outselling Bill's product.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Bob Ross did have his own unique style: his gentle, soothing and relaxing voice, his happy accidents and that Afro hair
Really, really a shame that the public does not know where Bob Ross stole his act from. I still and always prefer Mr. Alexander. I love listening to his wonderful , lyrical, upbeat, inspiring description’s. Long live William Alexander. A true master and gem.
He may not be The Happy painter but he sure is a happy painter, bob and bill are both great painters and neither stole anything from the other. Bob let’s give this light spot a friend, Bill POW!

This man doesn't get nearly the praise he deserves...
I love that Alexander and Ross both come at it from two different perspectives and personalities and they both totally work.
God knows I love this man: I watched him Every Saturday (in Buffalo NY) on WGBH PBS Boston.
Thank You for the memories! ♥

The best story teller with lovely accent.
Bob Ross' teacher. Both are such legends

Armand Zottola: I watched you paint for years and finally started on my own. You taught me most of my skills. Now 80. Thank you
he was beating the devil out of it before it was called beating the devil out of it
You can not beat the devil out of an ALMIGHTY BRUSH
Perfections doesn't exist so the almighty brush most has at least a bit of a devil inside xD
Bill's great enthusiasm and passion for art needed more credit than received. He was a great educator.
Now I know who's Bob ross's master, it's Bill Alexander. It was him who shaped a legend and bring happiness to life with him.
Thank you Todd for adding all these Bill videos- I’ve been dying to see these again. Like seeing a favorite uncle again.

As a very young artist I loved watching and learning from this man. I loved to hear him talk.
This is the best therapeutic content on youtube.
Bob Ross' Mentor,For the older folks like myself,William Alexander was our escape into the world of art, just wonderful to watch.
This guy just loves to paint and his enthusiasm is contagious
