Because for some strange reason, it gives you a sense of pride knowing that we have loved this music forever, but were always criticized because of their own ignorance, and now, people are starting to understand that this is much more than just music, but the music is also very good.

I remember when I first started listening to metal was after Christmas and I went to go buy some CD's and I saw ride the lightning, kill 'em all and master of puppets. I bought all 3 and I played each one accordingly I liked all 3 albums but once I heard master of puppets I fell in love with the band and later bought the black album.

For all these people associating metal with Evil things and the Devil, just stop. I listen to metal every day of my life, yes I am a metal head, it doesn't mean I'm going to Hell for it. I'm a firm believer in God and I have asked many people if that was bad of me to listen to that music and the answer was no. Only if I decided to relate to that music and do it too. So stop with associating the 2. If you were a real metal fan, you would stop this sterotyping metal music.

As a former drug addict with nearly 3 years sober I have to say “Master of Puppets” is my favorite song ever made by anyone. The lyric “more is all you need” hits me so hard and true that I’m starting to tear up while writing this. Stay safe everyone and keep headbanging 🤘

    • DastardlyDave69
      DastardlyDave69 Місяць тому +1

@Drac Maybe I should try a meeting or something. I thought the drugs made me feel this way. But it turns out I was broken before the drugs. The drugs just added to the pile. But at least when I’d be lost in oblivion I was at peace. I knew my lifestyle was one I would regret if I lived through it, I just always planned not to.

    • Drac
      Drac Місяць тому +1

@DastardlyDave69 support groups saved my life. I didn’t drink nearly as much as I used, but I found a home in AA. Now that I’m chairing meeting’s I get to pass on what I learned and am still learning, but the best part for me is the friends I’ve made that all understand that hungering for escape.

This song simulates the torture a drug addict goes through... Pain and anguish as his "Master" beckons him... The melodic part in the middle is the man giving in to his master and experiencing the brief euphoria provided by the high... but all too soon the pain and anguish return as the master comes calling back.... Epic..........

My middle school science teacher (a nerdy grandma who loved Harry Potter, dolphins, and glitter pens) was the one who got me into Metallica. I had to interview her as an English assignment, one of the questions about favorite music. "Hmmm, all kinds. But esp classical, and Metallica. Not their new stuff, the OLD, CLASSIC stuff."
So I went home and pulled up the 3 Metallica songs my dad had on winamp: Creeping Death, Ride the Lightning, and this one.
      Thank you, Mrs. Perez! \m/

The year was 1986. I was 16 and only listened to rap and hip_hop. My best friend was a metal head and listened to Iron Maiden, Ozzy, etc and I was forced to listened to it because he had a car and I didn't. I hated it! One day he came to pick me up and he pulls out this cassette tape, looks at me and says to me "Wait til you hear this!" For the 1st time I gave it metal a honest listen. I was immediately transformed into a Metallica fan. Almost 35 years later im still a fan. Seeing you react to this vid was almost like re-living that day when a light bulb went off in my head. I was getting chills Watching you through the whole video because I knew what was happening to you. Lol. BTW.. Watching your reaction vids has actually turned me onto a lot of new metal I would've never considered watching. My playlist now runneth over. Thanks dude... And have a dope ass day!

That transition from rage to melodic back to rage.
This song plays to the timeline of the progression of the drug addiction. The rage before the fix in the beginning, then the euphoric high and calmness in the bridge, just before the storm when the drug takes hole, and then the rage comes back to run your life again at the end of the song.... that was the genius behind this song. They didn't just write lyrics to meet the feelings behind the music. They wrote the music to express the entire cycle in it's entirety

  • Buck Bumble Boomstein

One thing that i personally thought was very clever was the way the music described a high!
The speedy part at the beginning (when you said it made you wanna go out and do crazy stuff) describes the want to be high. The slow relaxed bit describes the relief from the high, and the final part describes the feeling of betrayal from getting nothing out of it.
    Good shit!

Comparatively speaking, my experience with addiction is relatively mild, but this song still resonates on a deep level. Everyone I see reacting to this song seems to be struck by the lyric, "chop your breakfast on a mirror", but for me it is the previous lyric that really hits home, "ritual misery". I am reminded of the endless cycle of getting, preparing, and finding ways to consume my drug of choice. Those two little words say so much. So grateful to be free now for 15 years. It's interesting how you note how the instrumentals parallel the meaning of the song. That's true, you have the craving in the beginning, the high in the middle, and then withdrawal at the end, but think about this. The part right after the melodic solo in the middle, just before the lyrics start from the puppets perspective, you hear that off beat transition that reminded me of a guy staggering down a dark alley looking for a fix. Pure masterpiece.

Except that Metallica themselves in interviews do NOT consider their music 'metal' or that they are metal heads. I think it was a term thrust upon them, much like 'muscle cars'.....they weren't called that back in the day either.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was introduced to Metallica about.... more than 5 years ago, I’m not sure when, and the first song was master of puppets. It was crazy, sitting in the car and my stepdad playing this. It became a favorite of both my brother and I.

I was raised rather sheltered, the 1st time i ever heard Metallica I was with my family on vacation in Sparta, North Carolina. I think the year was 1987. My uncle's gf's son was stereotypical metalhead (hair, jean jacket, skinny af, dog named Beast). He had the imported Jump in the Fire EP, but I busted my cherry on Puppets.

I remember having a deal with my father. Every time we wanted him to download some new movies he would introduce me and my sister (we were about 11 and 13 at the time) to some music he liked. I still have a lot of songs to listen for the first time 😆

Second time I have watched your reaction to this track. Love your reaction. The one word I would say about this is 'mastercrafted'. The one thing in this song is the underlying riff . It's sound just gets into your core and pulls you into it. So meaty, it's got substance that makes you want more and more, until your fit to burst. Words can't describe how much I love this track. 😍
