    UPDATE:

    Your reassurance to people in the US about using metric measures resonates very strongly with me. I am from the UK and I grew up using measurements in feet and inches etc - though I always struggled with arithmetic operations and fractional values of such quantities. Then at about age 60 I decided that - as an awful lot of things in the UK are moving toward the metric system - it was time that I really started using it. SOoooooo glad I did. Once you have the basics into your head, designing and making stuff gets so much easier cos you have no more dealing with all those irregular quantities and crazy fractions - makes all that side of things a piece of cake. I would encourage any maker who has been delaying their move to metric to take the plunge - you won't regret it.

      Thank you so much!!! I appreciate you telling me your journey with metric. Metric is so easy. It's like anything new. Once you get used to it it becomes second nature. Thank you again!

      yeah I'm doin it too. Too poor to afford moducase but doing a massive garage rack perspexised (even with Aus rip off prices is still cheaper than moducase)and Amazon lighting. I hate Amazon but not as much as the monopoly Bunnings has on this country (and the rip off prices on similar lighting) Thanks Man. I wish I was as on point as you.@@PopCultureLivingRoom

      Thanks so much for watching! I really love this display case. I'm making a second one to go underneath the first one and I'm making one that's even bigger than those and several smaller ones to hang around in spaces that normally wouldn't be able to hold a display case. One of those little ones I'm calling a Grail case because it's meant to feature one or two six scale figures but you could put a half shelf in there and if you collect 7-in figures, you could have a couple of rows for 7-in figures.
      The case in the link below is the Grail case and it's going to be my next tutorial. It would have been released sooner but thinking about including a couple of different sizes in the tutorial. I'm working on it feverishly right now.

      Thank you so much for watching! And thank you for your support. Initially I didn't mention anything for the bottom because I was making another display case to put underneath it and I didn't think about it. With the size of this video, I was bound miss something sadly.
      When I did start thinking about what to add to the bottom, I started having a bunch of ideas and then I thought I should make an update video with all the ideas which I plan on doing.
      One thing you can do for the bottom so that the wood isn't showing is you can cut another piece of PVC foam sheet to the same measurements and notches of the top panel and then slide it into the channel at the bottom. This will give you a nice black panel to look at instead of the wood. There should be plenty PVC sheet leftover to make this.
      Another thing I was thinking was to wire LED lights under there and slide a translucent white acrylic panel in the channel at the bottom so that you can have light shooting down. Or you can make kind of a light box and add LED lights and have an acrylic panel with the logo of your figures in the bottom channel.
      Hope this makes sense.

You're an absolute hero as I have been looking for somewhere like Ooznest in the UK to do this for ages! I did try to use the slot covers in the channels for the acrylic but they were still too wide. I don't own any Moducases so I am not sure what theirs looks like. I have been looking for something that could go in the channel and hold the acrylic. What do the moducase ones look like? Are they thinner than the channel? I'd love to figure that out. @@PopCultureLivingRoom Let me grab you some pics, I'll fire them over shortly. I have no idea what they're actually called so I can't find them online... yet. I priced up a build from the UK and it works out to about £300 for the size of a Moducase DF120 (minus tools) as I own 3 DF120 from Moducase already so know the cost to import them. If I was to buy a single DF120 unit from them and the shipping was minimal and there was no import tax I wouldn't think the effort for this was worth the difference. The problem is with shipping and import tax it added on about £350 to the overall cost. That makes this build worthwhile in my eyes as I can do a direct comparison between this custom build and Moducase for the same dimensions.

The key is to make sure that all of your screws are tight and there shouldn't be a problem. Also make sure that you put the other side of the French cleat into a stud or 2.

Do you mind telling me where you found yours locally? Wondering if there are any chain shops or what kind of place I should be looking for since I only really see black/white in 6mm. Hi Dan! Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel. I'm on the east coast and get mine from a place called Everything Plastic. How I found them was I googled "acrylic sheets near me". Usually places that sell acrylic also sell the PVC sheets. You can order them from amazon but they will be more expensive. I'll put a link in the comment.
      A couple things I am doing different about the hanging case.
      1. I realized when making my new case, The Grail, that 6mm PVC sheet is overkill. Using 3mm thick PVC will work just as well and it is less expensive. The PVC and Acrylic sheets have gone up in price but I am hoping as things settle back down, the prices will go back to normal.
      Here is a link to 3mm black PVC sheets on Amazon: amzn.to/3D49JiL
      This is an affiliate link so if you do purchase the sheets this way then it will help the channel. I recommend finding a place that sells plastic products as it will be cheaper.
      2. Instead of using open cell foam on the side acrylic panels, I found inserts to put into the groove of the aluminum extrusion that hold glass. I talk about it in one of my livestreams. Livestream: ua-cam.com/video/mhAwMuUC96A/v-deo.html Go to 15:39. That's where I start talking about them.
      Here is the link to the inserts. This is not an affiliate link. T-Slot Cover: www.zoro.com/8020-t-slot-cover-20-series-width-14-in-12004/i/G3033129/
      Those are the 2 things I would change from the video. I may make changes down the road but I am super happy with how the case turned out. I'm building a second to go under the one I have up already.
      If you have any other questions, you can always ask and I'd be happy to help in any way.

I want to build something like this but for 1/4 scale figures so it would need to be larger and my plan is to place it on the floor and build out 3 shelves at the very least, is this aluminum material strong enough to withstand something like that in your opinion?
    I guess there is ways to reinforce the frame and make the whole thing stronger if I was to build it up, I guess the cases behind you were built this same way or are they moducases? honestly I cant even tell anymore.
    or even maybe just build 3 of them and then stack them on top of each other would probably be ok? im not much of a handyman but your instructions are so good im tempted to try :D

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому

      Thank you so much for watching! Yes the aluminum is strong enough to handle quarter scale figures. In fact it can handle quarter scale statues. If you want to make sure that it is strong and sturdy and you're worried about it not being strong enough, you can just use the 2040 extrusions for every part of it.
      The display case behind me is actually a garage shelf that I made to look like moducases. That build is much cheaper and easier. You can find that video on my channel.
      You can definitely make several cases out of the aluminum and stack them. To stack them you will need to get a quad t-nut to slide in between the two and have them connected. great looking display case but i have a few things you might need to think about. first, its great you looked for studs but those plastic anchors won't go into the stud. they're only designed for drywall. you'd be better off getting some type of lag screw or something ment to hold weight that will penetrate into the stud for best strength. second would be to consider using a second french cleat on the bottom. you might have used a ton of anchors in the wall and to hold the other half onto the extrusion, but the entire weight of everything hanging there is being put on just two small screws that hold that piece of extrusion to the rest of the frame. hate to see this fall off and hurt someone. just things to consider.

    The end of the aluminum was threaded by the factory? What size bolt did you use and did they provide the bolts?

      Thanks for watching. Yes, I have the factory thread aluminum for me. The bolts are M5 x 10mm bolts and you have to buy separately. I have all the info about what I used in the description.

      Thank you so much! At the time I made the case, I think it was $195 total. But cost depends on where you live and where you can buy the materials. If you live in the UK or EU, the aluminum frame is going to be way cheaper. The acrylic and PVC sheets will also vary depending on where you live.

    Acrylic scratches so easily. I think finding a good fish tank would be golden for this.

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much for watching! I'm not a fan of fish tanks for cases. But that's cool if others want to use them. It's a personal preference. Acrylic may be easy to scratch but it's also easy to fix. The only time there is an opportunity for scratching is when you take off the front panel to add and remove figures. And even then I'm careful and conscious where I place the front panel down.

    Do you still recommend the Ooznest UK company for the Aluminum Extrusion in the USA?

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  2 місяці тому +1

      I do still recommend Ooznest. I do have a US seller, Open Builds: openbuildspartstore.com/?ref=BvQnmjqj7p98MT
      I still recommend Ooznest over Open Builds for most things. Ooznest's website is easy to use and they offer more options, for example Ooznest's minimum length they can cut an extrusion is 40mm and Open Builds is 100mm. The shipping may seem high for Ooznest but for something like the case in this video, the overall price is only a few dollars off of each other.
      For Open Builds, you have to buy full pieces and then email them to cut the size you need and have them threaded.
      What I do for a project is go to both sites and figure out which would be the best way to go. Usually Ooznest wins.
      Thanks for the question. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

      Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words. To connect cases one on top of the other, you use something called a quad T-nut. And you use a bracket to connect them side by side. I put links below.

      In fact i have a question before i order the Aluminum extrusions, are we obliged to add the option "Tapping service for the end holes of the extrusion" and add threads in order to screw the M5 X 10mm Button Head Bolts??
      Because in your video it seems the your Aluminium extrusions have no threads.
      So it’s ok if i order without tapping?
      Thanks again!

      I ended up having all mine tapped by Ooznest. You don't need it for the four main posts that you're going to drill holes into but you need it for all of the other ones.

    If I need a 24” base using 2040 profile, would I measure the base and add 20mm to front and back to account for the overlap on the frame?

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! When you say base, are you talking about the wood board that will sit on the frame? Is the frame only using 2040 extrusions for the frame?

    • @r0cketride
      @r0cketride Рік тому +1

      @@PopCultureLivingRoom Yes, the wood board has to be 24 inches. I would be using 2040 for the whole build to display 1/4 statues.

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому +1

      So the only difference with the frame for the shelf is the front will be 20mm longer so you would add 20mm to the front and cut the front notches 20mm longer. When I get a chance, I'll draw you a diagram.

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому +2

      Thank you so much for watching! I plan on putting another display under it and that's why I didn't think about the bottom for the video. But one thing you can do is make a second top piece and slide it in the bottom since the top and bottom are the same dimensions and have the same notches. Another thing I plan on doing when I put the second display on is adding lights underneath and putting an acrylic cover on it.
      You should check out my live stream show off. During that live stream I give additional updates on the hanging display and the garage shelf display.

    Great tutorial bro! A quick question though. Do you think it'll be possible to add a reinforcing bar going through the center of the bottom frame and use expanded PVC board as the shelf? Perhaps that might make a lighter case with a little more head room for the display?

    • @dannyx1991
      @dannyx1991 Рік тому +1

      I'm having a dilemma as I'm trying to make one with 1000mm and 500mm extrusions but there's no solid wood board that goes wider than 16 inches. And solid wood yields the best strength to weight ratio compared to MDF and plywood.

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому

      Thank so much Daniel! Yes you could add bar and get 1/2" thick pvc sheet. The only issue is it will be more expensive. The support bar would be easy to add with corner brackets.

      @@PopCultureLivingRoom Thanks for the reply! I don't know how Moducase gets wood boards wider than 16 inch, because theirs is slightly larger. I might look into PVC board or go with thinner plywood. Thanks again! :)

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Рік тому

      @@dannyx1991 I don't think Moducase uses solid wood for any case. I think they use a composite. Plywood is a good choice. For the size the shelf is going to be, it should be plenty strong enough.

      @@PopCultureLivingRoom I guess that makes sense. Your tutorial's been a lot of help, because I was looking into getting Moducase. The cost difference between Moducase vs making one is surprisingly little, but I couldn't see myself waiting 9 months for it to arrive.
