Hey, really like this display case quick question tho what are the dimensions on the inside of the shelf. Going to make one for the ucs star destoryer and other ucs stuff I get from lego
Just an fyi from someone who is just now doing this project, Edsal Muscle Racks come in two types of black: matte and glossy. The matte appears to be what Costa has, but if you get the glossy MAKE SURE TO TAKE OFF AN EXTRA HALF AN INCH FROM THE LENGTH AND WIDTH OF THE HARDBOARD!!! I didn't find that out until I was about ready to put this whole thing together. The shelves for the glossy black muscle rack are slightly smaller, measuring in at about 23.5" x 47.5". The board on the back only needs to be cut to 47.5" but the height of it can be whatever your shelf height is.
It's nice seeing another collector using garage/industrial shelving for their displays. I've been using them for years with great enjoyment. A couple things I'd add: 1. I find the shelves look even better when painted compared to the factory finish. Unfortunately this does require a little touch-up work after assembly. 2. Painting the shelves can accomplish the same goal as the upholstery work, and maybe even better for those in humid states like Florida or Louisiana. Most of the shelves these days are either MDF or particle board which love to absorb moisture. A couple coats with oil based paint will seal them up nicely. Your idea for the backing is excellent.
Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate the additional tips. I may add them to a future update video. Some of those who have done the build have painted their shelves and they look great.
New to this channel but wow cant wait to DIY my cabinet. Tks for sharing. Just wondering whether it makes sense to have all acrylic shelving to see my collectibles and do i need to cut a small portion of it for my wires to pass through🤔
Thank you so much! You could definitely do acrylic shelves for every shelf but it will be very expensive. As for the wires, if you can slide them through without cutting the shelf then definitely try. The way my shelves are I wasn't able to pass through the wires without cutting the shelves in the corner. If you need help with anything while building your display case, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.
I learned a lot from this. I've got two of these shelves for my work room and I've been trying to figure out how to display my X-Wings and Grogu doll. Now I've got a bunch of new ideas. Thank you for sharing. FYI, the orginal shelf boards are not meant for heavy items. They bend and warp. You might have to invest in plywood. Lowes and Home Depot can cut it for you. Call ahead. Some stores can't keep their saw in working order. Talk to a lumber floor associate, the cashier (this was me once) might not know anything about the saw. These shelf units are sold at almost all the hardware stores. Mine are from Lowe's. HD, Walmart, and Amazon carry them. Get a big flat cart or lumber cart when you come in, they wont fit in shopping cart. They are usually in the storage/home organization department of the store. Also they weight over 100 pounds, bring help or wrestle them by yourself. I wrestled both of mine by myself but they are heavy. You might need something to protect your floor cause the legs are metal. You have the option of making one large unit with the five shelves or two half units with two/three shelves. Check around Black Friday to see if they go on sale (mine were). Happy collecting, friends.
This is probably the best video i've seen when it comes to a DIY shelf.. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain everything in detail. I can't wait till part 2 comes out.
Ok, after a few days work, my cabinet is finally done! A massive thank you to 3 youtube channels without which i would not have been able to even attempt such a project. Costa, you were my main inspiration... you are truly a genius! Posing with peter, i used many of your tips, you were extremely helpful. Sixth scale hero, my fellow aussie, helped me source materials in Oz and i used manyof your tips also. I highly recommend watching the videos that these 3 pioneers put up before starting a project like this. Thank you so much again!
This is great! I live in an area that I don’t have access to an IKEA or anything like it. I had to go with cheap Target shelves. The spacing is not ideal and leaves a lot of unusable area to 1/6th figures. I really don’t have a dust issue so I could forgo the outer acrylic. The only thing that is minimally unsightly on this case is the holes and I bet you could clean that up with some kind of thick black vinyl trim cut to size. I’m not sure what product you could use for that but I’m sure it exist. The black vinyl tape might work but I’m thinking it’s too thin and you would still see the outline of the holes.
Thank you so much for watching! I think I have an idea for you for the holes. You definitely don't want to use vinyl tape. The adhesive does not stick on well to metal. They make thinner magnetic tape. Get a size wide enough to cover the holes, about 1", and apply it. You will have the magnetic strength and adhesive strength to hold it. I found this online and it should work. I may buy some to test it because you brought up something that I didn't think of, people who won't be using outer acrylic. Thank you! smile.amazon.com/GAUDER-Magnetic-Dispenser-Magnet-Adhesive/dp/B077HSHWQK/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=Enzhe&pf_rd_p=bbb6bbd8-d236-47cb-b42f-734cb0cacc1f&pf_rd_r=Z7K40XC3J4F9YHCAW74V&pd_rd_r=5eb8aa65-094b-45d1-b511-0a82323108af&pd_rd_wg=7h8u7&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mi&th=1
Thank You so much. My son moved out of house and I will finally be able to set up my display room (long overdue lol) This video changed my game plan 100% I can't wait to see part 2, and also can't wait to begin replicating what I've seen you do.
JJ, thank you so much for watching and thanks for the kind words! I had the same situation. My son moved out and I was able to have my own studio/display room/office. If you have any questions when you start the build, please feel free to reach out.
I used your guide to build a case myself. PSA Just went to Costco the other day and they sold a better quality of the same type of case for only 90$. If you're a Costco member I would definitely recommend getting that case instead of the linked. If I do end up building another case I'll be using that one.
Thank you so much! This would be great for Barbies. If you have any questions at any point while you're making your display case, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.
Thank you!!! Im happy you dig it. If you have any questions while building your display, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I would be super happy to help you out so that you can make your perfect display.
@PopCultureLivingRoom I definitely plan on getting started soon. The only thing I plan on trying different is maybe trying to attach removable corner trim on the outside to hide the edges of the plexiglass. I'm going to experiment a little and maybe make a video if I'm up to it. If I do I'll definitely give you a shout out.
Thanks for the video! I’m almost done with mine! Here are couple of things to consider for people: 1: I chose 36x72x18 shelve, and for that you can only fit 1 light/ tier. You’ll need to order 2 of the 9” extensions 2: for lights, since you’re not connecting 2 lights, and as a result, the distance between each light will be more compared to Costa’s shelve. 3: If you’re collecting 1/4 or 1/3 statues like me, I’d recommend reinforcing the shelves by doubling wood panels and then cover it with faux leather.
Thanks for watching and thanks for including additional tips Narek! That's great you're almost done your build. I'd love to check it out. Feel free to send pics to my Instagram.
I also am using the 36x72x18 shelving and my issue with the lighting is that when I put the connectors on either end, the light no longer fits because of the plugs sticking out either side. It fits fine with one connector in one side, but not with both. How did you remedy this?
@@SomeoneHasThatName As I mentioned you’ll need two of the 9” extensions, and even with 2, sometimes you’ll need to adjust the lights by pushing them either left or right. However, if you want to fit the lights exactly in the center of each level, you can either get the third 9” extension or get longer extensions. I used 2 of 9” and 2 of the 3 light aren’t exactly in the center of each level and that doesn’t effect the lighting of levels at all. So the choice is yours! Hopefully this was helpful
How have your lights held up? I can fit the the lights in but the connection ends are at a pretty extreme bend, barely fits with connections on both ends. Thanks
They are holding up pretty well. I haven't had to adjust them at all. I am working on making my own connectors so they aren't squished on the sides. Stay tuned. Thanks for the support!
@@PopCultureLivingRoom So we got the magnetic tape and foam recommend. When we double up the magnetic tape is still doesn’t touch and hold with the metal frame. Have you had any similar issues? We are thinking it might take a third layer of magnetic tape.
I'm glad you figured it out. I was going to ask you to send me a picture of it because I had a feeling it might be the foam. Sounds like you guys are almost finished. That's great. I'd love to check it out when you're finished. You can send pics to my Instagram. Thank you again for watching!
I've been watching this series of videos multiple times... That case is so beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration. I noticed Menards has some cheaper shelves, model #12-00005-01 that have the same dimensions and weight capacity, in addition to looking sleaker straight out of the box. Think I'm gonna give this a go and hopefully have less work to do!
Sorry for the late response. I've been out of town. That sounds great! Thanks so much for watching! If you have any questions while building your display, please feel free to reach out to me.
I have the same size muscle rack and the same lights that you have in this video. I'm trying to install the lights but after plugging in the power cable there isn't enough room to plug in the daisy chain cable on the other end for the next set of lights.
Hello. I forgot to add the light issue to the original video. I was a newbie then. I was able to make it work. I explain how I did in a live stream. ua-cam.com/users/liveMVTbFststwI?feature=share It's at the 23:00 mark. Thanks for watching!!!
Great idea and video !! I’ve been looking for a nice display case to replace Detolfs because they’re so fragile and you can’t make a nice multiple figure diorama. I’m going to be making one of these VERY soon. Instead of super glue, if people have a hot glue gun, the glue sticks would probably be cheaper than super glue. Although I don’t think a hot glue gun will work for the expanded PVC back panels in your upgrade video, I’m pretty sure the hot glue would melt the PVC. I definitely going to be recommending this to my friends and followers. Thanks again !!!
Great video! I thought what you can do in addition is get a piece of plank wood white or painted white, the length of the shelf and make a floating shelf with a couple of screws. Also, for Star Wars figures I use a white plastic spice rack from Bed Bath & Beyond.
Thank you so much for these tutorials! I'm really looking forward to diving in to make my own. Would you have any recommendations for adding a lock to these displays? As I have children, I'm scared they'll pop these off and touch my collection haha.
Thank you for watching! The way I make the display, you can't add locks. If you have questions while making your display, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Hi Costa, EXCELLENT instructional video series!! I'm thinking of taking n the challenge to do a display case but before I start ...do you know what a moducase in similar size to your case would cost? Thank you!!
Hi! Thanks so much for watching! My setup for the garage shelf is approximately the same as 3 DF120s. The top 2 sections of my garage shelf are a little bigger than the DF120. A moducase setup like this would cost approximately $1000. Could be less. That cost depends on shipping cost and if you pay a customs fee where you live. Also they give 5% discount if you pay for your moducase all up front. Hope this helps! If you decide to build the display case, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I'd be happy to help.
Thanks so much for watching! What I basically did was worked and bent the ends of the cords as much as I could. The I slid the light back and finagled them until the magnetic tape touched the frame. Do you have Instagram or Facebook? I can send you a pic of what the lights look like in my case.
Awesome display! Thank you for the incredibly simple and easy to follow tutorial, Costa! How much weight can the acrylic take if you use it as a bottom inner shelf? I would love to see you incorporate led panel lighting as a base in one of those shelves! Something similar to the expensive Legendary Displays' SHO-OFF cases, both with diffused top and bottom lights, but at more than half of the cost. I've been researching edge lit lighting on frosted acrylic panels, and I feel like I can make it work. Just worried about the weight of some larger scale statues/dioramas bearing on the acrylic. One could say it's an unnecessary expense, but that's one of the small sacrifices you could make to make the best display for your collection! And it's certainly still gonna be cheaper than any Moducase with dim af lighting lol. But I still wouldn't have been able to build my own dream shelf without your videos. Thanks again!
Thank you so much G! I'm super happy I could help you out. The acrylic shelf can easily hold heavy statues. But it can't be thinner than 1/2 inch. I know of the legendary displays. You could definitely do edge lighting. I'm working on a case for individual collectibles that has lighting above and below. instagram.com/p/Cj26xxNOQUS/?igshid=OGQ2MjdiOTE= If you have any questions when making the case, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Thank again for watching!
@@PopCultureLivingRoom Awesome! I'm definitely looking forward for that one. Will do, and thank you Costa! EDIT: Also, I noticed your second display beside the first one from your instagram post. I would highly recommend getting corner shelving, as it makes a really great difference when it comes to showcasing figures from that angle, without the obtrusive post in the middle. @JurassicCollectables did a great DIY video as well showcasing those shelves. Though it only ships from the UK, it's still available from eBay. I'm probably getting one to experiment on.
@@G-flo I would totally do a corner display but the room is too small. Hopefully one day I will get a bigger space. I'd love to have a display area for filming and workshop area to experiment with displays. You'll have to send me pics of your display when it's finished. I'd love to check it out.
Love your videos. Finally getting around to trying this. can you use pvc foam board under each shelf or something stronger like the Eucalyptus board? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Awesome job man, im in ireland and those glasscases are cheap enough over here €90 each new but i picked up 3 second hand for 50 each, that said im definitely making your ones for bigger figures the finished produck looked amazing 👌
Thank you so much! Those are great prices for the shelves. If you have any questions while building your new display cases, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help. Also when you're finished, I'd love to see how they turned out. You can send pics to popculturelivingroom@gmail.com
Thanks for the explainer video, Costa. The shelf looks really great so far. Look forward to the second update as I think something like this would be great for my 1/6 vehicles.
Thanks so much! I made another case using upholstery grade Black Velvet and for the back panels I use black 3 mm PVC sheet. Part three talks about the PVC sheet and the display case from scratch video has the upholstery grade black velvet. If you have any questions while making your display, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.
Amazing video. I have started to get the supplies to put it together. For the second to last shelf I noticed you used acrylic. I am gonna be putting 1/3 scale statues on this which weight around 100 points all together. Do you think it can hold? Also, to get the wiring through did you also cut into the corners of the acrylic?
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! That's great that you're going to make the display. I haven't tried that much weight on the acrylic shelf but at 1/2 inch thick it feels like it can hold a lot of weight especially if you distribute the weight across the shelf. In fact ithe acrylic shelf feels sturdier than the boards that come with the garage shelf and they can hold 200lbs each. Yes I did cut notches out of the corners of the acrylic shelf. I think there's a quick spot in the video on it. I used a jigsaw to cut it. If you have any questions while building your display, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Bro I dead ass don't know how I got here I just woke up and don't even collect toys but your videos and editing is pretty great. Definitely subscribing based off that alone good man keep it up

God speed om.your journey my man
Maybe I’ve missed this comment before but I’m going to follow your build but make a few changes like clear or frosted acrylic middle shelves not just the bottom shelf. My question is, lighting. What lights would I get for app or remote controlled for possible different light colors and ease of on/off. If you would change lighting, what would you use?
Thank you so much for watching! The only rgb lights I found with smart control are in the link below. They are a bit more expensive. I haven't used them so not sure how good they are. amzn.to/3OgYV4W
Got everything I need in. Set up 2 racks (36x18x72), started to put figures on them and quickly found out I need 2 more racks... Will now look into adding shelves @@PopCultureLivingRoom
Hey love the video, my question is I got a rack from Costco and the board is too thick to cut the squares on each corners, it is necessary to do a zig zag pattern for the lights could I not just have all the wires run by the left corner where the plug, having the wires go down instead of zig zagging at each shelf level? Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching! You don't have to do the zig zag pattern. I did the zig zag pattern so I wouldn't have to get longer extension cords. The lights are connected in a line so one of the lights will need an extension cord long enough to reach back from to the end where you want it to go. I hope that makes sense.
I'm actually about to attempt this build, because it's the best step-by-step description I've seen yet. My only question(s) pertains to the optional glass shelf. Where did you get it and how do you account for the notch you'd normally take out of the boards for the light wires? I really appreciate this tutorial. Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you like the video. I got the acrylic shelf from Amazon. I got really lucky with the price. I used a handheld jigsaw and cut the notches.
As Costa mentioned with the Jigsaw, do use one with many teeths versus the standard blade that comes with it. do note as you cut the notch, that as the plexi cools it will want to stick to itself. my solution in the past with notches is not to stop when you start, I used to do a circular notch. if you want the square notch, after cutting, you can finish it by hand by using the blade manually (wearing gloves of course). I hope this helps out others since you already by now completed your build.
Looking to start this build soon! I noticed in the beginning of the video it looked like you had plans to do 4 shelves and then towards the end of the video when adding lights, there were only 3 shelves. Was there a design reason for this decision? Just curious as I am looking to do the individual front acrylic sheets for each shelf.
Awesome! It's going to be a fun journey. When I talked about shelves, I was talking about the ones I covered with the fabric. I covered 4 shelves which includes the top one. The layout I chose gives a lot of option without ever having to move or add more shelves. I made each section big enough so that all the figures can be seen and risers or floating shelves can be added. If you had an 18" deep garage shelf, you could put more shelves in. But with 24" deep shelves, the figures in the back wouldn't get seen if there were more shelves since the shelves would be closer together. It also gives me options if I want to add vehicles. If you have any questions while building, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you Gobarto! Detolfs are a good option. The good thing about the garage shelves is that they come in many sizes and if you decide to put heavier things in them they won't break like a Detolf. If you do end up customizing a shelf, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
I prefer a dark background....white shows more detail which is awesome if it's a hottoy figure but if you have third-party figures I feel a black background will hide the details of those not so great figures...but still show them with a decent look.
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch the video. Black background is excellent. Especially for something like Batman or Star Wars villains. I also agree with you about third parties. I have a 2nd shelf that has a mix of the white and backgrounds. Two of the sections are white and 1 is black. To get a high quality black background, I used black upholstery grade velvet and black PVC sheets. I used them in this tutorial here which is a different case but still applies. ua-cam.com/video/VWrP20yoGYU/v-deo.html Thanks again!
whats up costa! ABout the lights with the 8pk, will i be able to do 2 separate cases? As I'm only going to install 1 bar per shelf. I actually don't want each shelf super bright. Or does it come with just 1 main power plug that connects all of them. Also how are the lights holding up after 2 years, are they still as bright? And do we have to buy the extension cord for it? Thanks for the help.
Hi Don! If you are going to do 1 bar per shelf, I'd go with a 3ft shop light. It won't be as bright but will give you coverage of your shelf. Here is a 4pk of 3ft shop lights: amzn.to/4goLwoC Each light has its own power supply built in. Each comes with a plug and connectors to connect the lights in a chain. My lights are holding up great and it's been 3 and a half years. The display was built for months before I released the 1st video. I am changing the lights to fancier ones at the moment. That's what I'm doing on my current Saturday live streams. Hope this helps! Thanks for being a part of the channel.
Hey man... what kind of material would you recommend for covering the shelving and for the backing instead of the white hardee board if you wanted to have a black set up instead of white?
Hello! I recently did a live build and made the bottom section of the garage shelf black. I used black PVC sheets (3mm or 1/8" thick) for the panels and upholstery grade velvet for the shelf. It looks great! Here is the livestream: ua-cam.com/users/liveUKyO79JVuxY?feature=share I also have an update video for the garage shelf for the panels. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/_3UuzXMtEzo/v-deo.html Let me know if you have any other questions or need help finding the materials. I'd be happy to help.

Probably a silly question but how does the materials needed (not acrylic) scale if doing 72x36x18? Also do you feel the need to anchor these to the wall? Great video and can't wait to get started!
Hi! Sorry for the late response. I've been out of town. It's easy to scale them down to the smaller cases. I've had several people make the smaller size cases. The garage shelves are pretty stable but if you have small kids, you may want to anchor it. Thank you so much for watching! If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me.
That's awesome! Congratulations. Sorry to hear that you had a little bit of trouble but you did it. When you're completely finished you're going to have to send me pics so I can check it out.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom Think Ill use 1 inch x 1/8 inch disk magnets and window seal foam tape instead of magnet tape. Only down side I know gonna be harder to remove panels.
Due to lack of tools and work area end up doing white trifold project board and craft magnetic tape for the back. It doesn't look bad and materials was only $16 if I didn't make first cut wrong.... Better cheap materials. Now its $20.
Sometimes you have to do what works for you. Way to be resourceful! And with this display case, you can always make upgrades later. I can't wait to see it when it's finished.
Hello I really enjoyed your videos and have the spark to finally build a case. I just bought a couple more statues and they arrived. It's time I finally display my statues over 20 years lol. I just keep them in the box. Question though! Is there a taller rack than 72"? Because I have some sideshow statues and they're like... 29" tall so the 3rd shelf would be really tiny with 2 shelves needing to be around 31 " ish. My 3rd shelf can be small since they're anime statues around 10" ish tall. Any taller racks than 72? Any help appreciated!
Thank you so much Dave! I just checked and the lights look like they're back in stock but if they are not showing for you, I recently bought these lights for my 2nd display. 2ft led lights: amzn.to/3QVQOLp These are going to be more expensive because you only get 2 but they work just as well. Another way you could go is use one 3ft light for each section of the display. The 3ft ones provide good lighting. It will also be cheaper. 3ft led light: amzn.to/3AT31e5 If you have any other questions while building your display case, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help. Thanks so much for the quick reply. I live in Australia. I think this is why none of these will show up on my Amazon account. Thanks again though, I will keep looking.
2 questions. 1. The $230 price tag is per rack unit? 2. Do you need separate power per rack unit or can you continue to daisy chain the lights to multiple rack units?
Hi Thomas! 1. Yes, the cost listed is per rack. The cost may be a little different now then when I made the video in 2021. Cost may also differ by where you live. 2. With the shop lights used in the video you could easily daisy chain them without having separate power. Each light has its own self contained power unit. Thanks so much for watching and if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
I had this shelf in my garage for tools and equipment. Shelf collapsed with less than 100lbs on it. The problem is the pressboard wood shelf. It’ll never hold the weight of statues or any other heavy items no matter what the manufacturer claims. You’ll want to use plywood for shelves. You may even want to consider adding extra bracing to keep the outward structure from bowing and deformation. Deformation that would allow the shelves to collapse.
I was looking into making a display cabinet but I ultimately went with Moducase Sixth Series. I collect anime figures so it’s a perfect size for my mostly 1/7 scale figures and I got two tall units for my 1/4 scale. Acrylic sheets even from a local supplier are extremely expensive near me and I would be too limited on how I can space my shelves. Ultimately I’d rather pay a little more for the build quality and modular design. The eight month wait time does suck but because of it I don’t have to pay in full upfront.
Thanks so much for watching! You definitely have to make the choice that is right for you. Building a display is not for everyone. Though I do feel anyone can make this and at a high quality especially with the materials I talk about in part 3. Thank you again for watching!!!!!
@@PopCultureLivingRoom Oh I watched all your videos and from what I’ve seen you do have the best builds. I had gone so far as to have everything in my Amazon cart and found a local acrylic supplier. Really just comes down to personal preference, when I saw the Moducase could be purchased in a silver frame with white interior I more or less fell in love with it.
how tight was all you wiring on each side of the lights? I'm running into the issue of only being able to add 1 connector per shelf so im not able to run everything together and im working with the same size rack and same size lights. thanks
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it and I'm happy that you attempted the build. The lights go in pretty tight. It's something that I forgot to talk about but it's one of those things when you're making a video sometimes things don't make it in that should be in. I'm learning. I did explain how to slide the lights in on a live stream. I'll put the link below. I will also be taking pictures of the inside where the lights are to show everybody what they look like and I'm going to post them on my Instagram. I have been looking for a solution to this problem like a plug that has a 90° end on it but for the size T5, they don't have any right now. But as soon as I find them I will let the whole community know. Here is the live stream: ua-cam.com/video/MVTbFststwI/v-deo.html At 23:00 When you're finished the case, I would love to check it out. Please send pics if you can to popculturelivingroom@gmail.com. I do a live stream that I like to show off to the community of the people that make the displays. They all turn out fantastic and I'm pretty happy I'm proud of everybody.
Costa I’m doing everything you said, and it’s coming out fantastic, the question I have when I put the 4’ of lights and they have are plugged in on each in , the connections are making it longer then the 48” available, and the ends of the plugs coming from lower set of lights and on the other end going to the next set of lights make the lights not fit I would love to send you a picture of how’s it looking so far too
Hi Mike! I'm super happy that your display case is coming out amazing. The lights definitely can be tricky because of the plugs. Are you using one 4 ft light or two 2 feet lights? Send a picture to popculturelivingroom@gmail.com I'd be happy to check it out and see if I can help you. Also I'd like a sneak peek at your display.
You may also get help from a live stream I did. At 23:00 I talked about the lights. ua-cam.com/video/MVTbFststwI/v-deo.html On my weekly live stream I take questions and give tips for making display cases. I always seem to find new things and better ways to do things for this case.
Hello! Yes, the acrylic shelf is optional. The wood shelves are great and hold well without the acrylic. I added the acrylic shelf so I can view the figures on the bottom shelf. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for watching!
@@LongNguyen-hw5hk Yes. You can use a front panel without cutting. I definitely recommend going with 1/16" thick since it will be lighter. You may also want to use 1 inch wide magnetic tape to have more magnetic surface area. Thanks again for watching!

Now this is a great tutorial. Thank you for this video . if I ever need to build one of these in the future I will use this video as reference 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I have seen this video over and over and I still enjoy it. I did wonder after watching episode 3 with the use of expanded pvc board. i wonder why not use that to place on top of the board instead of using the faux leather. of course, the expanded pvc would lay on top of the factory board. did that idea ever run through your head?
Thanks so much for your support! I have not thought about that but that could definitely work. I chose the faux leather because I was trying to get it as close to a Moducase as I could. If you decide to use the PVC foam sheet on the shelf, let me know how it turns out.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom i see your point. as soon as I get that done with boards, i will let you know. i may experiment with foam board to check the difference between both.
Hi Chris! The lights were a bit of trouble for me as well. This being my first tutorial I forgot to explain better on what I did. I did explain it in the live stream below at the 23 minute mark. ua-cam.com/users/liveMVTbFststwI?feature=share Hope this helps!
@@PopCultureLivingRoom it did I ended up finding that video yesterday! I ended up grabbing some pliers and holding the bend while moving the connector up and down and it really loosened it up!
Liked and subscribed, exactly what I was looking for, I’ve been toying with this idea for a while instead of going down the moducase path, I have these exact racks in my garage and Bunnings here in australia stock them. I’m gonna watch your follow up video with the acrylic. I need a solution for my 1/6 Ecto-1. Great job my man!
@@bigmocollectibles1995 Thanks for watching Big Mo! Wow, $249. Though if you modded it yourself it would still be cheaper than moducases and you wouldn't have to wait. Prime 1 does amazing statues and the garage shelves can definitely handle the weight without mods.
Great video, great project. Thank you for sharing it! I have a question: Would there be any issues with spray painting the shelves white instead of covering them with leather? Same goes for the hardboard instead of covering the edges with tape. Seems like it would be a faster way to get them white.
Thank you so much! I'm happy you enjoyed it. It's all about your personal preference. The videos are a template or a guide and you add or remove anything that suits your vision. You can spray paint shelves white or any color you would like. I covered my shelves with fabric because I wanted a premium look and feel. The shelf board is particle board so it has a lot of rough texture to it. It's not the look I was wanting. As for the hardboard, you could do the same. I didn't want to try and match the white to the board and I didn't want to paint the whole board. Adding the vinyl tape was easy. If you check out part 3 in the Display Case video series, you'll see I found a great new way to make the panels using expanded PVC foam sheets. They are easier to work with and do not require a vinyl border. They also look premium and do not cost much more than the Fiberboard. If you decide to do this project and have questions while building, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.
Thanks for the kind words Daxton! And thank you for watching my video. Did you use the video to make your display? If so, feel free to send pics to my Instagram. I'd love to check it out.

You could try it but I would secure it to the wall.
Great video, I find myself coming back to this often for reference! Can I ask where you got the acrylic sheet and how much weight you would advise putting on it? Thank you! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Vipin! If you're talking about the acrylic shelf, I got it on Amazon. It can hold a lot of weight and it's very sturdy. I think the one I have can easily hold large statues. What do you plan on putting in your display?
1st, love the whole video series. This is really what I have been need for my lego collection. That being said, I was thinking about using .22-.25 in acrylic instead of .5". Do you think this would still work? Can you check the weight it can hold? My shelf is 36" x 18".
Thank you so much!!! I appreciate the kind words. I love Legos! You might be ok with going with .25in acrylic because of the smaller area of 36x18. I have a 36x24 shelf that is 3/8in thick and it is pretty sturdy and feels strong. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. @@PopCultureLivingRoom Obviously I am slow at building and didn't pay enough attention. I did a 36" instead of a 48". So, I will send you how it turned out.
I"m making a display case with same measurement but my shelves are only 3/8ths particle board and my statues are pretty heavy 1/6 to 1/4 scale. I'm concerned of the shelves sagging. i can bend the boards with out using much force. it claims to be able to hold 4000 lbs but I can't see the shelf holding anymore than 60lbs each with out sagging. I already bought all the supplies. Any suggestion on additional support that is hidden or doesn't look bad? Maybe thicker shelves?
Hi Randall! Thanks for watching! I'm happy you commented again. I believe you commented a few days ago but every time I try to answer it UA-cam does not take me to your comment and I cannot find it. I cannot remember your previous comment so please resend it to me. As for the current question, the garage shelves are meant to handle a lot of weight. Each shelve should be able to handle 200lbs. They are made to handle heavy items in your garage. If you add fabric to your shelf that should also provide some reinforcement. If you are looking for added security, you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. Replace the shelf board with 1/2" thick MDF or plywood from Lowe's or Home Depot. These 2 types of board are much stronger than the boards that come with the shelf. 2. Get a Steel slat that is 24 inches long and a couple inches wide and 1/4 inch thick and put it in the middle of where the shelf is going to go.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom After assembling the rack. it seems much stronger than I thought. I am making mine all black and was wondering how to covering up the underneath of the shelves. yours looks so slick. I have a few light up statues so I was wondering if I should cut out the back corners too. to lead the cables down the back corners. Or would that not look good? any ideas and material for underside of shelf?
The reason why my shelves look good underneath is because I put a layer of fiberboard down before I put the shelf in. If you're going to do all black and decide to use the white fiberboard, you can spray paint it black. Or you can use the PVC sheets in black. If you're going to run wires to the back of the display I would definitely cut out small notches in the back of the shelf. They are so small you won't even notice.

Hi! Brand new subscriber and now big fan! I’m about to attempt this build like so many others before me. I do have quick questions/hopefully advice! 1-I’m mainly looking to display McFarlane/marvel legends/ some mezco figs in this display. I tend to have them all in dynamic “scene” poses. Will stand as puck stands and acrylic stands stay well on the faux leather? I’m worried my figs won’t carry the weight to stay up 2-if the above isn’t a good idea anymore, I’m guessing painting the shelves work. However the muscle rack I’m looking at uses particle wood. Is that what yours had? Or did you upgrade to plywood? I’m not sure if it’s needed if going with a painted finish instead of faux leather (or I guess shelf adhesives). 3-is there any benefit look wise to have all shelves be acrylic like a Detolf? Thanks again and hope to showcase my process on this build!
Welcome Jeremy! Thanks for watching! 1. The stands will stay on the faux leather fine. The only thing I recommend is using felt pads on the on the stands so they don't damage or stain the leather. I talk about this in the Part 3 video, Better Back Panels. 2. Painting the shelves also works as there have been many people in the community who painted their shelves. I chose fabric because I wanted a more premium look. You should check out my Instagram because I like to show off people's displays that are made with my tutorials. There are several on there and may give you some ideas. 3. The only advantage I see is that to be able to see the figures on the bottom shelf and acrylic shelf will help with that. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.
@@PopCultureLivingRoom thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I will go ahead and check out the IG page! I was mostly concerned the lighter figures wouldn’t stand well on the leather but I’ll definitely go that route now!
Fantastic stuff! I'm using a few detolfs, six besta's, and four curio cabinets of varying size, but this looks like it could give a lot more room. I do have a few questions for you though, is there a way to contact you?
Thanks for the video, how does this fare with heavier things like resin statues? any tips on reinforcing the board/beam to make sure it dos not fall over? also acrylics sheets are expensive on my location, the cheapest I could find was a 1/16 inch thick.. would that suffice?
The shelves can handle statues very well. If you check out the tribute video on the channel, you will see a lot of statue collectors. If you want to reinforce the shelves, you can buy metal slats from Home Depot and put one in the middle of the shelf. Or, which I think works better, is you could switch out the particle board and use a piece of 24x48 pine board from Home Depot or Lowe's. It can be a 1/2" thick or you can do a full inch. I have a live build where I switch out a shelf from the garage shelf for a solid wood board. I will link them below. The 1/16" thick acrylic works fine. When it's own you can't tell the thickness. When you take it off the front, it will be a bit flimsy feeling which is fine. It will do what you need it to do. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help. Thanks so much for watching! I am not exactly sure how much weight the acrylic shelf can hold. The wood shelves can hold up 200lbs each from what the manufacturer says. They were made to hold heavy things. I will say this, the 1/2 inch thick acrylic shelf is extremely sturdy and would not doubt it could hold a lot of weight. I found a load calculator for acrylic online. It showed it should easily support 100kg (220lbs.) Plasicsheetsshop.co.uk/thickness-calculator/

@@PopCultureLivingRoom thanks so much for the quick reply definitely doing it now
Just an fyi from someone who is just now doing this project, Edsal Muscle Racks come in two types of black: matte and glossy.
That's great to know. Thank you!
It's nice seeing another collector using garage/industrial shelving for their displays. I've been using them for years with great enjoyment. A couple things I'd add:
By looking at the effort that went into making this, I thought the view count will be somewhere around a million! Great job, man.

Thank you!

Here are couple of things to consider for people:
1: I chose 36x72x18 shelve, and for that you can only fit 1 light/ tier.
Thanks so much for answering the question. Hope all is well.

Thanks so much for watching! If you have any questions when building your display, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Thanks so much for watching! I didn't think about hot glue gun. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out to see if it works. Thank you.
Great video! I thought what you can do in addition is get a piece of plank wood white or painted white, the length of the shelf and make a floating shelf with a couple of screws. Also, for Star Wars figures I use a white plastic spice rack from Bed Bath & Beyond.
Thank you so much! I'm way ahead of you on the floating shelf. Stay tuned for my next tutorial. Hopefully will be available this weekend.
Looking for the update now. I am interested in doing this asap.
If you have any questions about any of the cases, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. And be happy to help. Thanks so much for watching!
Great video can’t seem to get lights to fit when the cords are attached
Any thoughts

Cheers
Thank you so much! You can definitely use the PVC Foam board under the shelves instead of the fiberboard.
Sorry, do you have a link for the lights? Can't seem to find it here. Thank You. Great videos by the way

Awesome job man, im in ireland and those glasscases are cheap enough over here €90 each new but i picked up 3 second hand for 50 each, that said im definitely making your ones for bigger figures the finished produck looked amazing 👌

Can you add acrylic glass the cover everything so that way dust doesn't get on the collectibles. Nevermind you answer my first question
Thanks for the explainer video, Costa. The shelf looks really great so far. Look forward to the second update as I think something like this would be great for my 1/6 vehicles.
Thanks so much H T! I'm pretty excited to see how the acrylic turns out.
Fantastic. I think I want to do black rather than the white leather but this is amazing!
Thanks so much! I made another case using upholstery grade Black Velvet and for the back panels I use black 3 mm PVC sheet. Part three talks about the PVC sheet and the display case from scratch video has the upholstery grade black velvet.

Originally saw someone with ikea bestas, which are too far away from me to pick up.. this looks so much better and for less the price! Thanks man!
Earned a subscriber outta me!😂
Thanks so much Steven! If you decide to make it, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions.
Thank you!
Great job. I’m looking for detolfs but they’re smallish and few and far in between. This might be an option
I used them in this tutorial here which is a different case but still applies.

whats up costa!
Here is a 4pk of 3ft shop lights: amzn.to/4goLwoC
Each light has its own power supply built in.
Here is the livestream: ua-cam.com/users/liveUKyO79JVuxY?feature=share
I also have an update video for the garage shelf for the panels. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/_3UuzXMtEzo/v-deo.html
Let me know if you have any other questions or need help finding the materials. I'd be happy to help.
Can I use the muscle racks as a support base risers for detolfs? What size would work and how many detolfs could it fit safely?
In theory you could. I would switch out the particle board with 3/4" thick plywood for more strength. You can fit at least 2.
This is fantastic. I plan on doing this for my Lego.
Thank you so much for watching! I've had several LEGO collectors make this display case and I think I have some pictures on my Instagram of them. If you have any questions while building your display case, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to help.

Thank you so much!
I just finished putting my case together had quite few issues getting vertical post to align... But finally got it.
You're going to have to let me know how the disk magnets work out.
I believe you emailed me. Thanks again for watching!
Great video. I'm defo going to give this a try. Unfortunately the lights you suggested are sold out. Can you suggest a substitute if possible please?
Thank you so much Dave! I just checked and the lights look like they're back in stock but if they are not showing for you, I recently bought these lights for my 2nd display.
2ft led lights:
amzn.to/3QVQOLp
These are going to be more expensive because you only get 2 but they work just as well.
Another way you could go is use one 3ft light for each section of the display. The 3ft ones provide good lighting. It will also be cheaper.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I live in Australia. I think this is why none of these will show up on my Amazon account. Thanks again though, I will keep looking.
Ah. Ok. The search term I use is "LED shop lights". Hopefully that helps.
You’re channel has been an inspiration. I’ve been contemplating a lighting scheme for so long I haven’t done anything about it.
Do you also cut a 1/2 inch off the corners on the acrylic shelf on the one bottom shelf
Yes. Since wires will be passing through them.
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!
I definitely do way to much quarter scale 3D printing. I am getting decent at painting. So... I need to build this.
Awesome! Do you have an Instagram of your work? Thanks so much for watching!
I did wonder after watching episode 3 with the use of expanded pvc board.
i wonder why not use that to place on top of the board instead of using the faux leather.
of course, the expanded pvc would lay on top of the factory board.
did that idea ever run through your head?

@@bigmocollectibles1995 Thanks for watching Big Mo! Wow, $249. Though if you modded it yourself it would still be cheaper than moducases and you wouldn't have to wait. Prime 1 does amazing statues and the garage shelves can definitely handle the weight without mods.
Hi buddy , great video ! What’s your plan for putting doors or your display ? Or you are gonna use Velcro in all the acrylics ?
Thanks for watching! Im working on the acrylic video right now. I'm testing an idea I had using magnetic tape. So far so good.
Freaking awesome video. I did the exact same thing except instead of the white faux leather, I used black.

Question: largest muscle rack I’m seeing is 72 in.. can more be added to it? Perhaps buying two 60 inch racks and stacking them?

I'm not sure how stable stacking two 60 inch racks would be.
When you finish your display, I'd love to check it out and possibly show it off on my SHOW OFF!!! live stream. You can send pics to popculturelivingroom@gmail.com
Thanks again for watching!

Did you have to score the acrylic lower shelves?
Hi Kevin! Thanks for watching. The acrylic shelf I got precut. I did cut out 2 notches in the front, with a jigsaw, so wires could pass through without issue.
I’m worried my figs won’t carry the weight to stay up
2-if the above isn’t a good idea anymore, I’m guessing painting the shelves work.
You're very welcome!
Fantastic stuff! I'm using a few detolfs, six besta's, and four curio cabinets of varying size, but this looks like it could give a lot more room. I do have a few questions for you though, is there a way to contact you?
Thank you so much! You can email me at popculturelivingroom@gmail.com.
If you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

this looks great but sadly it still cost more than a Detolf , might eventually switch to this kinda setup though. acrylic sheets in my city still cost about $77 cad for a 70x40"
Thanks for watching! Yeah, detolfs will always be cheaper. Acrylic has gone up so much in price because of the pandemic but hopefully costs will come down over the next year. This is great alternative over a Moducase. If you do decide to customize a garage shelf, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
Did you have any issues adding the lights? The end of the connectors made it a little longer than 4 feet. 🤔

I like the leather but want black...any suggestions?
Thanks so much for watching! I have cases that are black. I use upholstery grade velvet for the shelves and for the back panels, I use 3mm thick black PVC sheets.

Does the 1/2” acrylic shelf support 800 lbs? Or was that only for the wood shelf? Going to try to build only two shelves for SideShow statues.
It showed it should easily support 100kg (220lbs.)

Statues and 1/6 scale figures aren't the same thing. You can't compare them. Thanks for watching!
Hey, do you think its best to get a 48×18×72 or the 48x24x72 shelf if I'm planning on mostly having 1/4 scale statues? I've got a few 1:10 scale ones as well.
For Quarter Scale statues, I would go with the 48 x 24 x 72. You get more space.
Omg i love this! I have same shelves and am going to try do same! Awesome video ❤

Hiya what's the thickness of the acrylic display fronts? I'm thinking for my self 3mm thickness. The front acrylic fronts will be 70inches by 35 inches width.
Hi! Thanks for watching Nitrus! 3mm will work fine. My fronts are 3/32" which is between 2 and 3 mm. If you haven't checked it out yet, I made a video all about adding acrylic. Good luck on your build and feel free to send pics to my Instagram. I'd love to see the finished display.
How do you get the electrical cod coming from the lights past the frame? It sticks out too far from the light.

@@PopCultureLivingRoom how do you connect extensions when they all have female ends on them?
@@mitchellmckeown854 The 9" extensions I used are male on one end and female on the other. They aren't both female.
Love it. In the process of doing mine. Question: did you do something on the bottom of each shelf. I wasn't quite sure if you only did that for the very top shelf or each shelf has something on the bottom or if it's just the fiberboard on the bottom. Thanks!

Another question please. The top fiber board did you turn it over backwards so the white faces down? What does the top look like? Hope that makes sense.
Yes. Have the white face down. The other side is brownish beige.

Isn't it too bright though? Do you think maybe neutral white would work better on a white display case?
Thank you so much for watching Manituan! The lights aren't as bright as they seem in the video. For me, they are the perfect brightness. If needed, you can always get a plug that can dim the lights and turn them on and off. I put a link to one below.

@@PopCultureLivingRoom Thank you. Do you think you could use one single acrylic sheet for the front panel? instead of splitting it into three? Would the magnetic tape hold?
@@manituan4956 You could definitely use one large sheet of acrylic for the front. I would recommend using 1inch wide magnetic tape to give the magnet more surface area to stick on the shelf frame.
Get black background or black faux leather. With proper lighting, White reflects light and sucks color out of the statue.
can i put an almost 4 foot tall prime 1 statue in that unit by spreading out shelves
Yep. It should be no issue. Thanks for watching!
this is so cool! ill try DIY down the line
