    Hi, we appreciate the inclusion of our site in the feature. However, we would like to clarify that the light systems featured are not our products. We do not sell wall socket power light kits; instead, all our light kits are USB-powered. Thank you. 😊🙏

      I want to apologize, I mix up the lights in the video. The lights shown were not from Luke Lights. I am getting a set of lights from Luke, and I'll be showing them off in a lighting video I'll be releasing in the near future which will outline multiple different lighting options for your display cases. Again, apologize for the confusion.

    I'm starting to think IKEA has no ideia that detolf is so famous and sells a bunch in part mainly because of figures collectors. When they see that the sells on this are no way near the detolf ones i hope they backtrack but i doubt it.

      IKEA certainly isn't very otaku aware. They discontinued the perfect manga bookcases, and has never made any new ones. Instead they just have dozens of inferior bookcases for putting random junk in them.
      Sure if you buy the regular kind, you can make double row manga, which is good for space, but not good for access. And I am mostly out of space these days, so it is not horrible with regular bookcases.

    I actually went to Ikea yesterday to see about getting some detolfs and only found out then that they have been discontinued. While there I got a chance to inspect the Blalinden in person. Three things make the blalinden a definite no for me. 1) The metal edges that obscure views of your collection unless you're directly in front of the case. 2) The narrower design. As you say for starting collectors it's not necessarily an issue if they only put 1 or 2 figures on each shelf, but we all know from experience that despite wanting to start out that way, our collections soon grow to the point where 3 per shelf is much more likely. 3) The thinner glass. With the metal edge supports I think the sides will be less likely to break than the regular detolf that is over-tightened, but the thinner shelf glass is very troubling, maybe not as much for anime figure collectors as they are lightweight plastic, but for those of us who have die-cast figures or even statues it's a red flag.

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому +8

      Yeah, those 3 points are mainly why I don't think I'll be switching; but I'm glad collectors have more options. I personally like thicker glass, for sturdiness, and it makes the case seem higher quality. The Terravault case has 1/2 inch glass shelves, which are heavy as hell, but they look and feel so nice. And I can understand why IKEA would like to reduce glass thickness, since it will reduce the weight and cost of manufacturing the display cases (which in turn allows them to keep prices low). But I'm curious if we'll see in the future that people shatter the glass of BLALIDEN due to accidents which wouldn't normally happen with thicker glass.

    Very good review and very detailed with measurements and dust proofing the case. I think the frame should be smaller, but the way it's made seems to be easier to dust proof and hide the dust proofing because you only need to worry about the door and stick foam between the door and frame. The detolf is nice for viewing angles, but the corners will have a bit of foam there though. I really wish manufacturers would understand that the entire point of a glass cabinet is to prevent dust getting on our collectibles otherwise an entirely open air shelf would be fine. Even the ultra expensive display cabinets don't have any dust proofing!

    Fantastic video. Extremely helpful. I've watched it at least a dozen times as I build my cabinets. I decided to go with the white version against a dark colored accent wall. That way I don't need to cover the cable channel with black electrical tape. Like you, I found the process of installing the magnets incredibly frustrating and a big failure by IKEA. Can't believe they have not corrected that issue by now, too. A few points you did not mention but I think would be helpful to others. One, the cabinet is pretty flexible because of the thin metal sides. I never had a detolf so maybe it had that issue, too. A second and related issue is the magnets. I think they are way too strong for such a flexible display. To open the cabinet, you have to hold on to the top or the tiny lip on the side, otherwise you might pull the whole thing forward. The magnets are that strong. Similarly, when closing the door it is almost impossible to do so softly. The door tends to slam shut because of the magnets’ powerful pull. I can see collectors who want to balance figures on their feet knocking the figures over when opening or closing the cabinet doors because of those magnets. I will have my sixth-scale figures on their bases using crotch grabbers or waist clamps so it will hopefully not be an issue for me, but I still might remove two magnets (keeping one close to the handle) or replace all of them with less powerful magnetic strips

      Update: A word of warning - buy every set of these lights you need all at once and not separately. I bought a set in early 2023, which matches the set here (plug into wall, separate transformer). They've very bright and pure white. I bought a second set in later 2023, and they're noticeably dimmer and less white (this version put the transformer into the plug itself). I just bought a third set hoping they'd match the original - they're closer (brighter and whiter), but not a perfect match AND the light bars are a half inch longer for some random reason! They also have a different style plug/transformer now, too. This is SO frustrating. I feel like I will have to buy a 4th set of these lights just so it matches the 3rd set and now I have no idea what I'll do with sets 1-2.

      Update 2: I recommend not using felt, which was too small to fill the gaps around the door and frame. Instead, I would recommend using vinyl foam strips (like you use to insulate a house). I went with 3/8" wide x 3/16" deep foam strips by Frost King and they sealed up the case very tight.

    The holes for the magnets are supposed to be small like that. That's because the screws that came with it are self-tapping screws. The screws will tap, enlarge, and grip into the door frame.

    A good review overall, fairly well balanced. The only thing I'd like to point out is during the pro and con list, @5:42 why would you list the Blaliden as having a con for adjustable shelf height? It does have limited shelf height adjustability as you mentioned, but a pro and con list comparing the two products, the Detolf has fixed and non-moveable shelves. So even though the Blaliden has limited options for shelf height options, it is in fact way more adjustable than the Detolf. Technically this would be a pro, am I wrong in how a pro and con list works when comparing 2 products?
    Love the Detolf though, picked up one of the original versions of this up about 20 years ago and still have it to this day.

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому

      Good question about the adjustable shelf height. Out of the box, the Blaliden has more height options, while the detolf has fixed shelf heights. However, with the aftermarket shelf clamp for the detolf, you can set the detolf shelves at any height.
      The blaliden however has it's shelf brackets set in holes that are pre-drilled into the metal frame. And there is nothing really else to lock aftermarket brackets into, so it's going to be much more complicated to set custom shelf heights. Drilling your own holes in the frame will be a nightmare. You could make brackets that stick on the side of the glass with 2 sided tape to hold up the shelf at a custom height, but still may be tricky. Aside from using the default heights, I haven't thought up a good way to set a custom height.
      But yeah, you are right, when comparing the two stock display cases, having the extra shelf slots is a pro for the Blaliden. But at the same time, the way it's designed, it's a limitation. I wish they just drilled more shelf bracket holes, so instead of having 7 up one side, it's like 15.

      I bought plenty of spinnrack DVD bookcases for manga in the past, and those were also all glass. I don't know why they don't make plexiglass products so that one does not have to worry about potential breaking glass. These days though those are discontinued so they probably figured out that glass was a bad material, but didn't figure out that the product was great. (Though it was a DVD product in a digital age, so only people who really wanted to put in small pocket books would buy them).

    While it sucks they are ending the Detolf, they've outpriced me on them. I loved them at $70, but I had a hard time justifying $100 even though I needed them. However, at $130, nope, I'm done.
    This new one does look nicer, but the design flaw you mentioned is a huge issue. Plus, with it being smaller, that would make it tougher for my Haslab Galactus and Sentinels to fit in when they are already snug in the detolf.
    In your comparison bit, I am confused how you say limited height options is a con when this seems to have more options compared to the detolf.

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому

      To clarify the limited height options, for the detolf, you can get aftermarket 3d printed clamps that attach to the metal frame where you can adjust the shelf height. Some people would use metal clamps from a hardware store but this approach scared me since I wouldn’t want to put glass on metal.
      It is true the Blaliden has twice the amount of height options. But you are forced to use the predrilled holes, and if you want a different height, there isn’t a lot of options other than maybe drilling your own holes into the frame, but I can see this being prone to error.
      Maybe using 3M tape and installing a wall hook or nub or something that can hold the shelf in each corner could work, as long as the tape stays. I am sure ideas for adjustable shelf’s outside the default options will start popping up.

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому

      They can, though they wouldn't be my first choice for a detolf because each light has it's own cable and it is just a lot of cables to run down the side. I actually picked them up for a lighting video I am working on, which is why I had them, so I'm still experimenting with them.
      I would prefer snake-light LED strips where you have the LED strip then a connector cable then LED strip then connector cable then LED strip and so on. So it's one long cable vs 4 separate cables.
      The second video on my channel goes over the LED's I used, they are 3000K light temp, so a bit more warm/yellow, but I think they look great, and I don' really see that much yellow (they remind me of the color of incandescent light bulbs).
      If you are looking for something that is a bit more 5000K - 6000K light temp (white). I assume these might work, though I haven't tried them yet. www.amazon.com/HitLights-Dimmable-Changing-UL-Listed-Backlight/dp/B08885ZJTQ/

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому +1

      I personally would not trust the Eket to hold the Blaliden. It's not really designed to support the weight of anything large on top of it. And I say this because each board is attached to itself with the 45 degree angle, so if you place something heavy on it, the two side boards will be pushed outwards as the top board is pushed downwards due to the weight (which could cause it to collapse). And holding everything together are plastic studs.
      Could you reinforce it to make it work? Definitely, but it would need a lot of reinforcement since the boards themselves are pretty thin. At this point, it may be easier to just build your own riser with same dimensions but with just stronger wood.
      This, however, is just my opinion, and it can be completely wrong. The Eket may very well hold the Blaliden, I just don't have experience with it yet.

    • @Battletide.
      @Battletide.  Рік тому

      I would love to see a revamp on the Detolf, it's a great display case, but it's a little bit dated, and they could make some simple adjustments to make it perfect.
      Thinner glass on the Detolf concerns me slightly, but I'm not a typical use case. The Blaliden has thin glass, and so to move it long distances (to make this video), I would pick it up with both hands from the bottom and carry it with my shoulder against one of the glass panels. I felt like my shoulder was going to go through the glass. Now, a normal person should have 2 people help carry it, and you only carrying it holding the frame, so I should have gotten help to carry it. I can't say thinner glass is bad, and it's definitely going to make things cost less and weigh less, but it will also make it a bit more fragile. Ultimately, most people put their display case down, and never move it, so, I doubt thinner glass will be an issue.
      As for time to panic, nah! I think we are in a really good place for display cases, there are a lot of options out there now than there was 5 years ago. So, having the Blaliden as another option is a great thing, because there are a lot of figures that would look great in it.

      @@matt5418 There has to be something like this in the UK, since it's just to used to prevent furniture from scratching the floor.
      You can find the details are on the page I linked, but here is what I found:
      Size and Package: the self stick felt strip measures about 2.5 x 300 cm/1 x 120 inches, total length is 480 inches, and the thickness is about 3 mm /0.12 inch;

    I still consider billy to be the best option, better way to display figures so they are all visible, option to buy extra shelves so you can actually organize everything better. I had a Detolf, but when I got the Billy I sold off the detolf and haven’t missed it ones

      I agree, bookshelves make great display cases, and I'm surprised I don't see more people use them. Especially since you can get doors for them if you want doors. I think you also get a better bang for your buck with bookshelves.

      Billy is my favorite as well but it just makes something feel a little more special behind a glass case.

    This kinda feels like that one seen in deadpool with blind al assembling ikea furniture, but with zero whiny wade.

    I have several display cases, the detolf I got for free (the price new is still way cheaper than US for some reason), it's my least favorite (I got several), they're not study enough, I don't like the inner frame and the door kind of sucks. I also have, I think, a variation of the blaliden, it has like the 4 display spots, but underneath has an empty shelf with no glass and also has legs, looks almost like the blaliden, it's almost the same size, it's ok. I actually like how it takes a bit less scape, when you put the detolfs next to each other there's a fair gap in between. As you said, for smaller figures it's fine.
    I much prefer other more expensive glass displays I've got, I much prefer a good wooden or metal frame, I got both, it doesn't bother me that they block the view, what does bother me and it may be specific to me; I don't want the shelves to move. I got truck passing in the street and the vibrations move stuff around. They are bigger displays, some have glass behind (love it). I got big figures too, detolf does not cut it. I did see ikea has some other more expensive glass displays.
    Losing the detolf is no loss for me, any new glass displays I buy/get will be some other brand anyway.
