👀 Turning The Same Bowl Twice! - Wood Turning

- My friend Dave gave me a rough-turned Plum bowl he had done to help it with the drying process. I seldom turn round bowls so this was kind of a treat! Finished in shellac.

Oh Phil! Justice 🤩 Thank you for the view!
Thanks for watching, David! 😄
A new Philism for my vocabulary..."Screwwackey"!
LOL! Not copyrighted, feel free! 😊
Hey Phil, Today's the day I replace all of the old wiring on the boat and prep the boat to make it ready for the water. Add three new boat seats, a new depth/fish finder and some small odds and ends. I added a new and larger water output than the older bilge pump. I already replaced all the regular wood with composite material that is rot. mold, mildew, fungus, and waterproof. The fish are already biting like wildfire, and I have already been catching fish off the boat dock. Your works using plum, and every other woods you use, always turn out very nice, especially the live edge bowls that I love the most. Oh, and a new deep cycle battery for the trolling motor. The old boat should be back on the water inside a week if the weather stays rain free for the next few days.
You sound like a busy guy, Fred! Just think how nice it will be once done! 😊
Those little natural features, especially the knot that fell out, make it just so “you” even though it’s not really the sort of thing you usually do.
It did help, Ian, thank you! 😃
Good morning, good afternoon, ……. Love “screw whacky”, my kind of words! Glad you found some colorful parts of the wood to make it more interesting. Twice turned bowls can be fun since most of the tough work of shaping and hollowing are already done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yeah, I was done with this one before I got started, almost! LOL! Thanks, Valerie! 😊
You hit the nail on the head. KEEP ON TURNING 🏆
Gorgeous bowl Phil . Thanks Dave . Thank you for sharing Phil . Hope you have a great weekend .
Thank you, Jon! The sun is shining! 😊
A different Phil video. I like it, glad Dave sent you this.
Glad you liked it, thank you! 😊
That's one cool bowl. Where the knot popped out makes nice place to pour liquids out without making a mess.😂
Haha, yeah, a spout, just what I had in mind, Judith! 😊
That is a pretty bowl. I agree that the knot hole is a nice feature. Always enjoy watching your videos, Phil. 😊
Thank you very much, Cathy! 😊
This is way to cool Phil. Thinking back I was supposed to meet with you at Dave's house back then but we were headed north for a motorhome trip to Canada.
When I got back I did drive over and met with Dave and he sent me home with two once turned pieces of the same wood. I was kind of sad that I was not able to meet you that day but a year or so later on another trip up your way I met you and came home with some great memories and some Olive wood.
Here is something else that is odd tomorrow my turning will be from a chunk of wood Dave gave me. It might have been when he was up here or when we were passing by his place on the way to Beverly Beach.
Not sure but all are great memories.
Oh and your turning looks great and it was so cool that knot fell out.
Thanks for this video it was nice thinking back on those days.
Gary
Yeah, I felt bad you weren't there that day but I treasure the day you two stopped by here! How cool! Two Dave pieces in two days! He'll be famous! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil terrific bit of recycling nothing going to waste. Like you I liked the knot which flew off and the purple patches. Thanks Phil.
Thank you, John! 😊
This is a great re-turning. I love that you paid homage to Dave by retaining the shape that he started. I’ve turned a few bowls that were roughed out by someone else. It feels good to continue with what they left for me. Thanks for sharing this beautiful bowl.
Thank you, Doug! 😊
Hi Phil hope you're doing great! It's good to see for once you not beating your wrists to bits with a wild piece of irregular shaped wood - and for a piece of plum it turned out really nice! I loved watching you turn as I always do - take care and all the best - Bucky
Thank you so much, Bucky! 😊
That knot hole is for your thumb when your holding the bowl. Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for that! 😊
Exactly like I do it. I get a lot of green wood from storm damage. Rough turn it, coat with something to slow the drying then get back to it later if it doesn’t crack real bad. Nice work!
Right on 😊
Beautiful twice-turned bowl. Love the shiny finish!
😊
This bowl reminds me of the yarn keeping bowls that have a hook shape cut on the side where the yarn is kept from rolling on the floor, but it keeps the thread coming out smoothly. If your wife is into yarn work she would love e one!
Interesting, Gracy. Lots of "spoon rest" comments, too! 😊
Bowl with a lovely natural spoon rest!
😊
Yes you've said it before...its really smooth. I want to hear that. I'm very tactile with touch and absolutely love smooth wood. Ypu did a great job of finishing a great peice. So much of the beauty of a peice like this us in the sanding and finishing. Good job Phil and Dave! BTW the way Phil another good "lesson" from you. Twice turned.
Thanks a lot, Steve! 😊
Hi Phil, That is a wonderful looking bowl and great work on the second turning.
I find it enjoyable doing something different from time to time.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw.
Thanks, Huw! That knot popping out save it, for me! 😃
I like that beveled edge. It is pretty wood -- soft colors and grain.
Thank you, Lynda! 😊
Lovely piece, Phil. ....71 is too hot for moi. The ice is still on the lake here. We had a foot of snow last Saturday. Rainy and chilly now. Better than 71. Ha, ha. Happy Chocolate weekend, Phil. 🐇
Haha, c'mon, warmth and sunshine get the juices flowing! 😊
Thanks again for a nice bowl turning video. Better than anything on TV :) ... my wife loved the term "screw whacky " :) ... I told her it was a wood turning technical term :). Thank you Phil and thank you Dave. Happy Easter.
Thank you, Baydon! 😊
I can't say I have ever seen you finish a bowl that someone else had rough formed so it was a pleasant surprise. It did not look all that inviting when you first showed it but as you worked it into a finished bowl you could start to see the real worth of it. After the knot popped out it became a more 'Phil like turning' & the finished you achieved made the whole project 'pop' & become worthwhile. Great job mate. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Agreed, Don, the knot made me feel right at home! 😊
Just another beauti bowl , Phil! 😊
😊
Its a very pretty little bowl with very little effort! I totally agree, the knot flying out added so much character to the finished product! Thanks, Phil!❤
I'm glad we agree, Texana, thank you! 😊
Quick and easy. A great way to turn when then is no hurry. Looks great.
Yup, kinda fun, too! 😊
nice to hear that your temp went up we are still in the single numbers up here you always do good work thanks
We are going to have a warm weekend! 😊
Phil
Nicely done.
Learn something new every video
John
Cool, thanks, John! 😊
Something different and beautiful. 😃
Thank you! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations.... Plum is always very nice. Half turned bowl is different which is also very nice. That knot fell out just right I think for holding a big wooden spoon handle? I could not make out any critters this time. Always fun Phil and I look forward to your next performance... TM
Yup, built in spoon rest, I wish I would have thought of that at the time, dang it! Thanks, Tuffy! 😊
Phil that was a smashing job on the twice turn, little different from what you normally turn.
Different for sure! Thank you, Alan! 😄
Wow! That’s a beautiful piece! I’ve got to get my hands on some of that finish. Well done!
Glad you like it, thanks! 😊
Very pretty wood, nice simple and attractive shape. I agree, both the beveled edge and the purple spots make a big difference to the finished piece.
Thank you very much, Susan! 😊
Always nice to see a plan work out. Keep up the great work
😊
Well, this was an interesting change. I love the grain and the finish. 🪵
Thank you, Marcia! 😊
In the "Olde Days" we would have made that knot hole on the brim a place to hold your cigarette-- Viola! A plum ash tray. Nobody makes ash trays any more. I can remember ash trays as a viable Junior High woodshop project for a kid to give to his dad. Those days are gone, I guess.... Unless they get made to park your dad's spliff or his blunt, but we're not there yet.
Haha, what a fun comment! 😊
Nice result from a piece you took to be polite. Dave may be having second thoughts about having let this one go!😊
Oh, Dave, is quite capable of turning beautiful pieces. I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
You and Dave turned a beautiful bowl!!! Have a good weekend. 😊
Thanks, Mary, you too! 😊
Just another example Phil shows his talents to us. When someone else starts a project you know how to really make it beautiful again. This twice turned bowl is just stunning. Thanks for showing us this project and a lesson in twice turning of a bowl for all of us to view. KEEP ON TURNING
Thank you very much! 😊
Good evening and Happy Easter.
I agree, Phil, I don't do very many twice tured bowls either. This one is a wonderful piece and I also like the turn down rim. Nice touch.
See ya next time.
Thanks, Ray, you too! 😊
Turned out really nice.
Thanks Phil.
You bet 😊
Thanks Phil as always a awsome video. Glad you could "find" something interesting in the blank besides the nice grain. Keep up the interesting videos as ALWAYS
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! 😊
Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, Dave!
😊
Nice to see you salvaging a bowl that might otherwise be wasted. Sometimes it's not the initial successes that are important, but what you can make from potential failures.
Thank you, Jim! 😊
I second that thought and you are so right. Wasting wood to me also a crime. Help save the planet. KEEP ON TURNING 😋
Nice one, Phil! (And Dave)!
😊
Well Phil, definitely an unlike Phil bowl.
Nice to see you turn something more normal than you usually do. Most of your bowls are “screw whacky “ in some form or not. Glad to see you found something SW with this bowl as well.
The wood is very light colour without a lot of grain showing, very unlike plum, more like peach in colour. Both prunus though.
Thanks for sharing Phil.
Thanks, Greg! 😊
It was nice seeing you work with your lathe at a higher speed. I wasn't sure the machine could go that fast! Lol! It sure looked a lot less challenging than your normal turnings. The bowl is pretty, but I like your normal style better.
Me too, Kristi! Thank you! 😊
Very nice bowl Phil. Definitely a different project than those you normally do, but the knot put it back into your wheelhouse. 😄 Your approach aligned with how other turners I follow do twice-turned bowls and it turned out beautifully. That plum really looks nice.
Thank you very much, Mark! 😊
It’s beautiful piece of wood. Your added touches are beautiful ❤❤
Thank you, Maddie! 😊
Very nice Phil... I'm still learning and re-turned my first bowl a week ago. The piece was from a very spalted 200 year old Hackberry tree that came down on my property a year ago. I had many pieces blow up as I tried turning bowls from this tree . After losing several, I kept a couple thick{er} so I could try to re-turn at a later date, hoping the wood would harden some. Me being new to turning and only having carbide tools is a challenge, but people like you make me want to push the limits! Thanks for the vids you put out!
I hope you get at least one that works out for you! Thank you! 😊
Awesome collaboration! Beautiful bowl!
😊
As always awesome work. Keep em coming, and happy turning my friend ☺️
Thanks, Edward! 😊
You added a new word to my vocabulary (Screw-whacky)😄
It comes in handy! 😊
That came out really pretty, Phil!
Thanks, Billy! 😊
Can turn down free plum wood, and it turned beautifully. The knot accident was a plus to add a natural feature to the edge....
Thank you and I agree, the knot helps! 😊
Nice bowl Phil and Dave.
😊
Love the redo Phil, plumb loves to move, particularly like the Bevel edge, when mentoring never turners, we suggest the bevel is approximately 90 deg angle to the top of the outside edge, like you have said its adds a little extra dimension to an ordinary bowl, totally optional but must seem to like the concept. Absolutely love your finishes whatever the exquisite shapes you turn, finish is the golden extra . Kind regards George
Thank you, George! 😄
I'm thinking that Dave started on that bowl, got to the knot hole, and thought, "this needs to be in Phil's hands". It came out beautifully. As you were turning off the tenon and the little nub I realized that it's always a tense moment for me, kind of like the landing part of flying. I'm afraid the piece is going to unexpectedly crash! Have you ever had a piece crash at that point?
Thank you, Phil 😊
😂 No, that's not exactly what I was thinkin' at the time. As usual, I had taken a lot more of that tree than I ought to have. I'd seen other UA-cam turners trading green-turned roughed bowls and thought it might be fun. Knots don't bother me.
Thank you, Gwynn! I've never had a crash but a couple of hard landings, maybe! 😊
Nice and shiny ❤️ now!
😊
Late again Phil, got new eyes though, all the better to see you with..😂
What a lovely collaboration between you two, lovely bowl with some interesting features. I enjoyed that a lot, good work chaps.👍 Oh and Happy Easter 🐰🐣🐰🐤🐰🐥🙏
Thanks, Jude, Happy Easter! 😊
It’s always nice to see older generation, showing newer generations how they did it. I appreciate it as I am a younger version. Just starting to turn.
The feeling is mutual going the other way, John. We love seeing the younger folks get interested in the same things! It seems kind of rare these days. Thanks for watching! 😊
Very nice Phil! The plum I have is so cracky it takes for ever to turn because I have to spend so much time making repairs. That looks like it was a nice piece of wood to start with. Glad it was an easy re-turn for you. Your knotless bowl looks great! Cheers, Rick
Thanks, Rick! 😊 Yeah, most fruit wood cracks pretty badly. I got lucky with this one.
I like whatever you do. ❤️💕
You are too kind, Vickie, thank you! 😊
Very nice, really enjoyed this video. please keep on teaching and turning. Thanks Woodbees Tennessee Turner
More to come, Randy, thanks for watching! 😊
You did a plum good job on this plum bowl! Thanks Phil!
Thanks, Kelly! 😊
Plum-tastic!
😊
Nice work, as usual! I watch all you turning videos, not only because you do fine work, but also for your commentary. I do watch a lot of turning videos, but the ones that are wordless turnings, I put the speed on 2x just to watch for new things to try.
Your thoughts and ramblings really are important, least to me. Example, talking about the beveled edge on the bowl, that info is priceless.
Thank you Phil.
Thank you, Scott! It's a little touch but it makes a big difference! 😊
Awesome job Phil it turned out very nice. The first easy one I've seen you do in a long time.
I was due for a break! LOL! Thank you! 😊
Beautiful bowl. And man did you make that look easy. Thanks for sharing.
Well, it was pretty easy, Bob! 😊
Nice bowl Phil, something completely different from the norm. I do like plum wood, I took a couple of large branches out of my sons plum tree last year, should be ready about now I suppose. New lathe arrives next week, exciting times, from bench to stand alone. Cant wait!
How cool, enjoy, Colin! 😊
Nice work Phil. This one was kind of out of your realm. Not a lot of nature like there usually is , but still very nice looking bowl. Love the new word for the day , screw wacky 🤪. Take care.
Thanks, Scott! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous as always Phil. Beautiful grain and finish.
Thanks, Carl! 😊
HI Phil that turned out coooooooool. great
Thanks, Manjit! 😃
Nicely finished Phil, I’m glad the knot went flying too and I do really like the bevel top edge just adds a little extra dimension to it.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Very nice Phil. I don't do this much either. Maybe only once before. This was very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing. Happy Easter
Happy Easter, Albert! 😊
A unique fun video Phil, and of course it turned out great. Hope all is going well with you, I wish you a Happy Easter. Many blessings to you. Rick
Thank you, Rick! Happy Easter! 😊
I’m here. Nice bowl. I like the purple spots. Well, I like all of it. See you next time. Hugs 💫Roma
Thank you, Roma! I've been thinking about you. Hugs to you, too! 😊
That's plumb nice
LOL! Thanks, Garth! 😊
Hi 👋, Phil, nice finish, plum like most fruit woods all ways give a great finish, yours even comes with a place to lay a knife fork 🍴 or spoon 🥄, 😂, Happy Easter 🐣, to you all,
Thank you so much, Happy Easter! 😊
Short and sweet. Nice
Thanks! 😊
Thank you, I'll look for one.
😊
Howdy Phil👋👋
😊
Thats beautiful phil
😊
Phil enjoyed the video! I learn from all your videos. Just did a twice turned bowl yesterday. Wish I had watched your video first. It was Bradford Pear and hard as a rock on the second turning. I think it would have gone easier if I had watched you first. Keep them coming. Happy Easter! Dan
That's awesome, Dan, thanks! Happy Easter! 😊
Perfect🥰👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇬🇧
😊
Very pretty bowl again, great finish Sir! Like the knots as well.
😊
Nice job Phil
😊
Very good looking bowl, it would make a great M&M bowl…
😊
Who'da thunk plum wood would finish up so nicely! Well, at the hands of Dave and Phil everything is possible! Nice job, Phil, that finish is beautiful.
Thank you, Robert! 😊
That's a beautiful piece ❤
😊
Very nice outcome Phil. I love the beveled edge and beautiful finish. Happy Easter!
Thank you, Susanne and the same for you! 😊
Very nice finish, Phil!
Thanks, Teddy! 😊
This qualifies as a true "easy-peasy" turn. Phil! Beautiful nonetheless! Thanks!
Thanks, Greg! 😊
My notes put your visit to the shop when we lived in Portland as fall of 2019. We moved out of Portland to our rural location almost a year later. I found the tree being removed on my birthday while on a walk. Had my choice of the pile. Still have some of it.
Very nice finish re-turning! I believe it's nicer your way than mine. 👍😎
Thank you Dave! Beautiful blank for Phil’s twice turned bowl.
Thanks, Phil, for the shout-out for the rim style. Can't remember if I saw that style and copied it or whether it just evolved as my own idea. A flat rim just hits me as unfinished and jarring. The curve should flow.
My gosh, that's almost five years ago! Seems like yesterday! Thanks, Dave! 😊
Thanks for the blank, Dave.
Bill
Of course its fun to watch, why wouldn't it be...😂
Not much going on, I guess. But, if you had fun, YAY! Thank you for watching! 😊
Nice job Phil! .. and .. Howdy from Florida
Thanks and howdy! 😊
Hey Phil. Nice!
Thank you! 😊
Very nice ❤love the finish thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you! 😊
