I confess that I'm feeling some envy. I wish someone would give me some Koa, so I wouldn't have to spend $350 plus shipping to get some from Hawaii. Good for you Gary!

A few years ago a friend had a box of wood sent from Hawaii.
A shop that sells exotic wood will send a priority box full. There were 4 nice pieces of Koa.

That makes a lot of sense.
I never have belonged to any clubs. I have to admit that I have as much fun figuring things out as doing it.

@ThePapa1947 I get that. Prior to turning, I'd only done a bit of carpentry and building an ice fishing shack with my dad, in 1994. I watched my grandfather, who was a very skilled woodworker, but never really gained any understanding. So my beginning meant I benefited from mentorship. Grateful for those incredible, generous, men who got me going, successfully.

@@jayscott306 total understand what you are saying. A club is a good way to see how things can be done. You will need to pick what works the best for you.
My first turning was in 1961.
Once I did my two years I the Army my first turning as an apprentice was almost 6 inch diameter. The next was 6 foot in diameter. With many pump and valve bodies from 10-26 inch diameter. These all had to match supplied drawings.

Looking at your finished piece of Koa is the reason why turners do segmented turning. Every turning is different and the sheen (my not be spelled right) is much more evident. It may take longer to glue up and balance each ring but the end result is spectacular! I never know what it will look like until it done. Very nice piece.

Beautiful, Gary! Great use of an exquisite piece of wood. When my soulmate & I were in the botanical gardens in Kauai several years back, there were huge solid Koa park benches 10' or 12' long, 20" or so wide, & probably 8" thick. Made this old woodworker downright salivate! (Thought briefly about sneaking a couple into the overhead bins for the flight back, but......)

Beautiful Gary! I’ve been away the last couple of weeks so missed a bunch. We were in Mexico for a while then up to the Cariboo area of BC to help my son in law reno their new house (with more to come). I absolutely love Koa. I have a Taylor Koa guitar that looks as amazing as it sounds. What a great idea to segment that piece in order to make a gorgeous bowl. As it’s turning it looks like mirror tiles sparkling. So glad you are feeling better in order to do these more complex turnings!! Cheers, Rick

I sure do like the shape and you did good. Back in the eighties my sister sent me a big box of koa from Hawaii. I was sure some of it was old growth
I wasted it on.cribbage boards and pens. Never made a bowl.

Thanks Garth. A friend we volunteered with use to live in Hawaii. Her friends had a shop where they sold wood. She had them send me a proximity box filled with some cool wood. Couple nice pieces of KOA. I made my friend a beautiful segmented bowl from one of the pieces.

Beautiful piece Gary and very informative video. I'm not a segment turner but I think I have a decent enough setup to give it a whirl someday. My lathe has a swiveling headstock and I didn't know how much I would appreciate that feature until I started using it. I now use it on almost any kind of hollowing. Love your videos

Gary, Lately I have been using waterlux satin and gloss. The only downside is side is the dry time between coats and the cost. On some of my crotch bowls which have embossed pictures I use lacquer. I should give the water base a try again sometime . It could have been my application process that made it turn out like it had pimples all over.

Beautiful wood and shape. Does the Minwax wipe-on poly change color over time? I like what you are using to finish this and want to try it. As for the bud vase project I told you about a while back, well, things went wrong in the design and construction. I will try again. The main thing that went wrong was the creator of the project. Haha I will send a photo of a couple of projects that worked. I enjoyed this video as usual and learned stuff too. Thanks for sharing your work and thoughts.

Hi Gary, Very beautiful! By chance I just finished a KOA wood segmented bowl myself...it's exceptional wood. In my case it was to be a salad bowl, so I used a food-safe penetrating finish...but I do love the look that you achieved with the water-based poly. How long do you leave a ring on in the Longworth jaws before pulling them back and glueing on the next ring? Thanks!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 місяці тому

I would say maybe 5 minutes for most of the time. Just be sure the rings are flat.
So do you plan on putting salad in the bowl? With dressing on it? Just curious.

@@ThePapa1947 Hi Gary. The KOA segmented bowl was made as a gift, and I very much hope it will be used! I put a food safe penetrating finish on it, and salad dressing oils will keep it looking good. Thanks for asking!
