Well now...this was interesting. I knew I was going to say nice looking grain. But when you showed it at the end I was blown away.
It's not a bowl or a platter or any conventional turning with some sort of a utilitarian use.
What it is is ART pure art at its finest. I know people that would absolutely love to have it.
The grain is very nice but that bark sets it off and the areas with the groves look like you designed it that way. Wait you did!
I especially like the one that just ends. Oh and the end that looks like 2 logs is another great feature.
    Seriously Phil I love it.

Wow! Thank you Gary, for the best comment I've received on ANY of my videos! I feel like you truly understand what I was trying to do, here. It was kind of a gamble on this plum wood because I like it so much and didn't want to screw it up, but some how, it worked out in the end.
Thank you again, Gary! You've made my day!

I love it. I love how you talk to yourself- to us -the universe. I love how you make a decision and just do it. This is NOT a nightmare creation. To me it's an AWE creation. I love how you're not afraid to try something different and look what happened. Just a gorgeous piece. I think your handle should be - "Wood Whisperer "

Plum Crazy is an appropriate name for that creation. It sort of reminds me of the live edge bowl my grandparents would put out at the holidays to hold all the different nuts that were still in their shells. Fill that center with a variety of nuts and use the outer rings to keep the nutcrackers and pics to get into the shells. Regardless, there are no mistakes only experiments and learning. Thanks for not giving up on it and sticking with it. It looks great.

Ya, I suppose that rescue shelters would be pretty picky. Maybe they could be composted. Here in Calgary the city picks up garden waste, tree trimmings, Christmas trees etc and I think all that goes through a chipper and gets composted. I'll have to check to see I suppose, but here in the City I dont have many options for disposing of large quantities of wood chips, we only get 1 recycle bin of stuff per week, and wood turning will certainly clog that up....

Phil, I am a novice turner with loads of sanding under my belt and I've turned several pieces like your "bad dream" and I use the pads wrapped around a 2 inch paint brush with great results and intact fingertips. I'm a big fan and have learned so much watching your videos. I also try to leave it as natural as possible. It took retirement to return to a passion I learned in high school and started my own little venture called nakid grandpa woodworks here in Virginia Beach.......turning and learning.....bill

Thanks Bill! I turned a similar bowl to this one and tried the sandpaper wrapped around the paint brush trick. I don't know what kind of pieces "like" this one you have turned but these live edge and natural edge pieces do not do well with that trick. If you have a nice even round bowl in the middle, it probably works great but on natural edge, not so much.

Hi Phil. I meant to mention in my last comment. In the past when I faced the dilemma of sanding in tight places that do not allow fingers, I have used rubber hose (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2) diameter with sand paper wrapped over one end and taped on the other. This rubber hose allows the sandpaper to move with the contour of the area to be sanded without damaging fingers. Mostly I use the clear hose that is a little firmer, but I also have use the more soft black rubber hose as well. Hope this helps, Jerry

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  Рік тому

I appreciate the help, Jerry. The problem is, I'm guessing you are talking about nice round bowls and your suggestions would be very helpful with those. I turned another somewhat similar bowl after this one. Lots of people had lots of suggestions on how to get in there and I tried some of them. None of them work on a bowl with natural edges. The irregular edges come around and just tear up whatever you are using. It just takes lots of hand sanding with the piece not spinning to solve the issue. 😊

Talk about an edge of the seat viewing experience! Held my breath a few times on that one, Phil. 😳 I love the beauty and symmetry of more traditional turnings, but it's the thinking-out-of-the-box deviations from the norm that really make me perk up and pay attention! This one did in spades. You've inspired me to take another look at some of the more "unorthodox" pieces of wood lying around my shop and think about fresh approaches to finally getting around to using them. Well done! 👍

Hi Phil! This old video just popped up for me. I love it very much. One of the first large bowls I made was more or less like what you did but it was a combination chip and dip bowl. With the smaller bowl for dip emerging out of the chip bowl. The outer bowl was about 13 or 14 inches across and around 5 inches deep. The smaller bowl was around 4 inches across and deep enough that a little glass bowl could sit inside to hold dip. Wish I had remembered to take a picture before I gave it away. I think it was made from walnut. Anyway thanks for the video, I really do love the “bad dream” bowl! Cheers, Rick

Good evening, Phil! (actually it’s morning here). As with all pieces, the direction of creation is endless. Let me say that I do like it. This piece is odd because as it stands finished, it’s very cool. But I’ve rarely seen a piece that lends itself to thinking of so many different directions. What if you went here, or there.? Did this or that? Instead of ‘Bad Dream’, it should be called ‘Ripple Bowl’. It looks like you dropped a finished bowl into a lake of bark. BTW, thanks for listening when I answer you during the video. I don’t know how you hear me, but we are always on the same page (ha,ha). Be well my friend!❤

Hey I have to say that this a most unusual piece but, I love it. It's great that you did not feel that you had turn the outside of the piece, what you have done by leaving it is to actually enhance the beauty of the bowl. The natural bark edges make a huge contribution to the finished bowl & enhance it. I believe the bowl would not have the same appeal if just left purely with the overall shape & the grain. This shape needs the third element in this instance. Beautiful piece of turning with a great finish. Again your commentary during production was brilliant, as usual so thanks a heap. Don

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I just read the comment from Gary & he is absolutely correct. As you know, I was a Senior Master of Art in South Australia & this would hold its head high anywhere as a pure piece of Art. Who cares if it does not conform to some preconception as a utilitarian bowl, it is a bowl but more than that it is a piece of Art in its own right. Congratulations Phil, well done. Don

Please be honest with me and explain just how you managed to steal your way aboard the Starship Enterprise and filch one of the serving dishes used to display the Tredordian Shrimp served with Unshuabi dipping sauce. These as you well know were a strictly one off, made especially for the Tredordian Emperor and cost thousands of Rghireas. I'm speechless at your audacity. Well done once again.

Phil, a bit of an off topic question...... what do you do with all your shavings? You likely get more than the average turner. I was just wondering how you treat your chips. I wonder if anyone has ever thought about trying to compress them into blocks for burning in firepits etc. I was also wondering about donating the chips to animal rescue societies, human society etc for use as animal bedding.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

Throw them over the bank out back, Peter. Some chips, like walnut, can make some animals and plants, sick. 😊

  • @peterstenabaugh3041

Phil, I think that sometimes you get too critical of your work. So what if a few spots don't sand up as smooth as you'd like, for whatever reason. Anyone that finds fault with that should be told to go turn one themselves...... even if there are some flaws or rough spots - it's all part of the art form....This is a super interesting turning. In fact I think I'd certainly try something along that line myself, what can possibly go wrong?

Maybe if you took off the bark on the ends it would have been more balanced , but that’s a lot of bark gone. I thought it looked good as you did it. 33:45 33:45

Thanks for the shout out, Phil! Much appreciated, my friend! I love the grain in this piece. But then I love pretty much any wood that has grain definition. I've been known to study the grain wood floors, etc. for... well, for longer than normal folks.
Once you turned it around and got into it a bit, I kept thinking, "Go with the emerging bowl idea, Phil!" And then you kinda did, so I guess you heard me. I wouldn't want to sand that beast though. Sheesh! I LOVE it!

I think it looks cool, you could put it back in a tree and a bird could build a nest in the middle bowl , then put water in the first ring and then a bit of food in the outer ring.
    Just my idea.

Thank you, Danial, I'm glad you like it. The audio portion gets muted by UA-cam during times in the video where my fast forwarding is active. It didn't used to be that way but started maybe a year or so ago. I don't know why and I don't know any way around it.

If you still read these , then if it is food safe you can put crackers around the bowl and a bowl with dip or such in the inner part.

There have been similar suggestions, Joseph. Chips and Dip comes up, often, too. Right now, this is my personal favorite and it just sits on display, so far, but sure, it would make a great fruit and nut bowl, too! Thank you for watching!

For what it is worth, this creation is an absolute world class masterpiece !! In my opinion, by far the most creative, interesting work of art that Phil has ever created. The end result is an absolutely stunning concept. This is my favorite kind of work, something that is different and creative. 100% kudos to you Phil on this one, I think you might have even outdone yourself. This is definitely not a bad dream, but a "Heavenly Inspiration" to all of us woodworkers who strive to deliver the beauty of nature. Thanks Phil.
