Amazing coloration of this juniper. I kept hollering at you not to fill that void, but it did provide a visual comparison so folks know the next time you ask. 😉 I like how you take on a variety of challenges and end up creating gorgeous pieces. Thanks for sharing your talent!
Thank you kindly, Vicki! 😊
I’m so happy your feeling well enough to keep us entertained year another week! Beautiful piece of work as always. Thank you Mr. Phil!
You are so welcome, Madonna, thanks! 😊
@@morgancalvi6675 Last year, good now! 😊
Phil. Thank you for your persistence. You’re a real inspiration to the rest of us ol’ duffers. I really enjoy all of your videos. Thanks for sharing with us, it doesn’t go unnoticed 👍👍👍.
I appreciate that, Steve, thanks! 😊
Phil, you didn't hear me. I was hollering NO!, NO!. But oh well, it looks great. Thanks for another gem, Phil.
Dang it! 😊
The purple-brown coloring makes my heart pitter-patter. The multi colors of the patch look like confetti. I love it!
Such positive thinking! Thank you! 😊
VERY glad you didn’t just drop it into a bucket of resin!!!!! Sweet ending to this one!!
Thank you! 😊
I love it, the plug is an asset as far as I am concerned. The grain and colour is crazy. Fabulous.
Thanks, Frances! 😊
That crack about the high tech dust collector had me grinning from ear to ear. I would have filled the void with golden resin. The way the Asians do with broken things. That grain is awesome as is the piece you made if it. Thank you Phil.
😊
Even though I appreciate your high tech dust collection system, I voted against "Philling" the hole in the bottom of the bowl. But I must accept the majority decision and the result of the patch, which really isn't bad looking, just not the natural approach that we've come to know and love. The result of your creative turning is magnificent with all the levels and curves and angles around the top. And that wood is spectacular! (I love the smell of pencils in a sharpener.) Thank you for creating this wonderful piece!
Thank you for your great comment, Gwynn! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil. Love that colour and grain. Pity about the hole but I voted yes. Not so sure now. 😊
Phil, you are my favorite guy. That piece is simply stunning. The Pfitzer Juniper is a bush. That wood is amazing.
@@1957Loyal Thank you, Stephanie! 😊

Being from the northwest I’m surprised you don’t know what a pfitzer juniper is. It’s a low growing, fairly fast growing shrub most often found in the front of people’s homes. You’ll see it as a barrier between the sidewalk and the front lawn or along the side property lines. I have a piece of juniper root that I dug up and finished as a 9” tall stand for whatever you would put on a stand. I don’t know how to attach pictures here in UA-cam or I would’ve sent it to you.
I will never be able to turn out the art you do. I’ve made a lot of standard pieces but nothing I’ve worked on can compare. Another beautiful piece. Thanks Phil!
Give one a try, David. Once you get a few under your belt you never go back! 😊
beautiful, but I have to admit, I regret yelling YES
LOL! 😊
I love your humour, your dust collection looked like my Dad's. Your fill looks just fine to me. I love the colours of that incredible wood.
Thank you, Frances! 😊
Wow the colors is gorgeous! Excellent job showcasing the beauty of nature in this piece!❤
😊
WOW Phil this one turned out so beautiful. Love all the colors of the grains and how you left so much of the woods character in tact.
Thank you, Colleen! I've never seen wood so colorful! 😊
The patch is TERRIFIC! Yes , I voted YES!!
You and your bowl are adorable!!

Oh, gosh, thank you, Colleen! I've never been adorable before! 😊
I think people just love to try and stump you with the pieces they send you. Don’t they know who they are messing with. 😁👍
😊
I always learn from you. Using carbide to dig in without having to remove the tail stock is brilliant. And the idea of the coffee grinder is great. And btw that is a gorgeous piece!
Wonderful! 😊
I was a little perplexed to think how you could find enough clean wood to create something but you did it and it's beautiful. The colours are sublime. I didn't want the hole to be filled with ground chips and glue, but it was interesting to see the contrast between the holes and the filled hole. All in all, I LIKE it! I think it would make a good fruit bowl.
Thank you, Karen! 😊
What gorgeous wood and beautiful bowl. Like how you try to keep everything natural as possible.
Thank you so much, Rayleen! 😊
Oh,boy! You really had me cracking up after your big build up on your high tech dust collector. Man...what a show off!
But seriously, that bowl is a stunner!
LOL! Thank you, Audie! 😊
Very good-looking piece. That type of wood I find a bit chippy (juniper/cedar) so, staying sharp is a must ... well for me as I try to get better at turning. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work with us.
Right on 😊
I have never heard of this species . It really has a beautiful grain though . And you pulled of another great piece ! Thanks for sharing .
My pleasure! 😊
Hi Phil...
Another amazing masterclass in natural bowl turning...
Well done...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thank you, Andy! 😊 Have a great weekend!
Such beautiful wood... the colours and markings are amazing. Awesome bowl 😊❤
Thank you very much! 😊
As always, Phil, a pleasure watching you work. Nicely done.
Glad you enjoyed it, Hubert, thank you! 😊
The piece still turned out beautiful Phil. I almost fell out of my chair when you decided to fill in that crack. Anyways it was still a very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one
I hope you do too, Albert! 😊
Phil - to phil or not to phil that was the question! I was shouting 'NOOO ' but you know what? It still looks really cool - lovely job! I looked this tree up - it can grow for over 500 years, wow!
Good to see you Phil, hope all is well with you!
Right on! 😊
Very beautiful wood. And the patch is fine! Just did a patch similar last week! Well done, once again Phil!
😊
outstanding piece of work there Phil! Absolutely love it!
Not sure if you googled it, but pencils are mainly made from Cedar wood. Cedar is one wood you cannot get enough of when it comes to smell.
I did, Wendy and I agree, smells great! 😊
Absolutely beautiful my man. Stunningly beautiful piece and one you should be proud of. Anytime you can allow as much of the natural beauty to speak on its own you’ve done a great job. Fantastic job balancing craftsmanship and natural beauty. Really well done here.
Thank you kindly, Jaydee! 😊
Lovely! I think you’re right that the thick edges suit the bowl. 🙂
😊
I voted against filling the hole. See what happens with absentee ballots!
Haha, you are so right, Robert! 😊
It's lovely Phil 😊 spectacular juniper, pencil sharpener, patch & hole, loving it 🩷
Cool, thank you, Karen! 😊
That’s some pretty wood. I need to get me one of those professional dust collectors!😂🤪 Most pencils are made with cedar wood. Hope you’re staying happy and healthy! Thanks Phil!
Haha, thanks, Brenda! 😊
I said no but you could not hear me 😄, Phil it looks Great. Thank you for sharing your hard work
😊
Well Phil your amazing 👏 I didn't think there was any hope but you pulled it off. Great job.
Thanks, Ray! 😊
Wowza! Phil you have outdone yourself sir! Absolutely stunning
Thank you kindly, Tina! 😊
YES YES, GIVE IT A TRY! Its not a regular 'filled' crack, its a 'Philled' crack, lol. Its done carefully and artistically! The 2 voids are different. The patched part doesnt look bad. You didnt know how far it went into bottom. The voids left alone were ok.
Thanks Phil, I think you did a great job!
Thank you, Texana! 😊
You are funny! Love your super advanced sawdust collector! Going to look fantastic!
Thanks so much! 😊
Love your dust collector that was so cool 😎 lol lol that was a good delivery 👍🏻 that’s a beautiful wood Phil and you did magic again ❤
Thank you, Wendy! 😊
I prefer unpatched to the patched but as always it is so much fun watching you work
😊
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, I hope you are all keeping safe and well, That surely is amazing, beautiful grain, that mother nature has made, and you, of course, 😂 . I think it was right to fill it , firstly we have made it a bit darker, and I know you don’t like using it, but I might of use resin with colour, but nature is what it is, and it produces some amazing growth and sculptures in its process, I think it looks amazing. A beautiful piece of art , Well done. Phil, stay safe, Phil from the moulin France.
😊
Awesome colors in the wood, Great job keep turning Brother
Thanks, Kevin, will do! 😊
Phil, what a smashing piece of wood you had there it turned out fantastic. Well done
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Loved the piece and your vacuum. Especially the demo. Thank you for your video and humor. 😊😊😊
Haha, thanks for watching, Wayne! 😊
Phil
Another successful turning
John
Thanks, John! 😊
Once again Phil you have inspired me.
Good to know, thanks! 😊
Amazing colors and I was voting no 😂😅 thanks again for sharing with your UA-cam family
😊
Hi Phil your a funny bugger your dust collector is quite unique
Haha, works great, Rob! 😊
I’m happy with the patch - it looks OK to me. Beautiful colours in the finish.
😊
World Class piece as always Phil. I am with you, I do not ,like the patches. Regardless of what the void might look like, it is natural and not artificially filled. The voids are where the Gremlins live. Some of the most desirable bowls I have turned have voids inside. Let us keep "Mother Nature" first and foremost.
Right on, Jerry! 😊
Thanks Phil, even with the hole it’s beautiful wood.
😊
How can the shape of a tree be so pretty and beautiful? Your work skills are also great.👍👍
😊
You sir are a true artist! And yes i voted yes to fill the hole. Great job. Bye the way i have the identical dust collector. Lol. Thanks Phil
😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil brilliant bowl you created this week fantastic colours and grain patterns. I wasn't in favour of filling the void but once sanded and polished it looked ok. Thanks Phil.
Thanks, John! 😊
Gorgeous bowl! I know you don't do epoxy but a nice, dark blue, epoxy might have been the ticket.
😊
It is certainly an interesting piece. I was saying NO to the patch. But, it turned out nicely! Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you, Crystal! 😊
Im good with the patch. I like that you let us see the difference.
Cool, thanks, Christine! 😊
I'm with you, Mr Phil. I would've left what mother nature gave me. I don't understand why the "ayes" had it. It would have looked much better au natural.
However, it's still a most beautiful piece as only you can do it. I always love your attention to the nature of the piece.
Thanks a lot, Les! 😊
You didn’t hear me yelling “NO! NO!!” Well, I’m 2 days late watching, so no wonder you didn’t hear me yelling. 😆 That’s some beautiful wood! It was smiling at us! 😉 I really like this bowl, except for the alligator patch. 😁 Wave at the trees for me, please. Have a fabulous week and I’ll see you next video. As always, Lots and lots of hugs to you. 🙃 💫🫶🏼 Roma 🦕 🌲💚🌳🦅
I hope you had a good trip to visit family, Roma! I know I'm late but, better late than never! 😊
Those colours 😍,definitely a challenging piece great work phil
😊
Hey Phil, You have inspired me to go out into the cold dark tundra of NY state to cut in to a hunk of root I pulled from the yard last year. The piece has coloring much like your Juniper. I turned a small piece of it and it cut like butter but also had a void. I filled it with very fine wood powder and CA several times to get it level with the surrounding wood. It turned black and polished up nice but took a long time to get it right. I think you were right to leave the second void natural and open-looks great! Coincidentally I have the same dust collection set up! If anyone wants one I'd be happy to send a link. Thanks for the vid!
Haha, that's great, Jay and yeah, it's a great dust collection system! 😊
A real beauty Phil
A little extra work, but well worth the effort. It’s a Beauty.
Thanks, Leona! 👍
HI Phil wow those colours r so beautiful. gods creation.
😊
Wow! A natural tarn bowl. And colorful too.
Thanks so much 😊
I had a piece like that 30 years ago, ended up slicing it diagonaly and made clocks for each of the kids. They are still keeping time.
😊
Not a filled crack but a Phil'd crack !
Looks wonderful despite nature's trick with that hole in the tenon . 👍
Thanks, Jim! 👍
Lovely piece again. Holding my breath for you when removing that tenon ! Ha Ha
You and me both! 😊
Mate, I watch a lot of wood turning videos with their shiny, polished resin segments and stunning bowls but your work is a real adventure. Not just for you, obviously you gain a lot of satisfaction from it which we also share with you. I usually initially disagree with your decisions (e.g. patch or not) but damn it the finished piece always shows you were right all along. As for your patter, I tend to find this annoying from others but yours is so natural and unscripted, it wouldn’t be the same if you kept silent. I especially loved the lead up to your state-of-the art dust collector. Totally cracked me up when you demonstrated it. Thank you sincerely.
Wow, what a delightful comment, Joe! It sounds like you understand me perfectly. Thank you! 😃
Very nice! Heck! If I'd tried to do something like that it would've burst in pieces and been scattered all over the shop. Truly well turned!
For those who want to know, pfitzer juniper is an evergreen shrub used extensively in 'discouragement hedges'. Its gray-green foliage is full of tiny, very sharp points which easily break off under the skin and sting like mad. I had no idea it was such gorgeous wood!
I used to do landscaping. Hated every single hedge of this stuff I had to prune and shape. Nasty stuff hiding so much beauty!
Thanks for sending that to Phil, Dave.
Bill
I'm glad I just got the wood and not the thorns! Thanks, Dave! 😊
Oh my goodness that is beautiful Phil.
Thanks, Jay! 😊
Everything you do turns out awesome
Love it.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much 😊
Hi Phil ! Your little giggle at the 8-minute mark and "Wow'ee!" said it all. We've had about 3 nights of cooler temps; such a relief. Got one night of mid 50s (around 3 a.m.). The mosquitoes were fierce this year (with all the rain). Lake at RECORD high!!!. Glad we didn't get all that precip in the form of snow. Bro in Province west of me got hail the size of apricots. A first for us. He's closer to the Great Lakes; I'm farther north and downstream from him, so, no hail here hopefully, however. (I wonder if Eliza Doolittle could say all them h-words, aïe? Ha ha.) Back to your video... Bonne fin de semaine (Good weekend).
Thanks, Red! You have a great weekend, too! 😊
I too subscribe to the natural approach and would like it either way. The filler retains the color of the piece and blends well. It is not immediately evident because there is so much to absorb. The filler provides a touch more utility. Good job and thanks for sharing.
Yes! Thank you, Steve! 😊
Great piece. So much movement and color. Well done.
Thank you, Doug! 😊
Love the beautiful colors in that bowl! Wow!
😊
Such beautiful wood. Thanks for sharing that it smelled like pencils. When I demo at our local Renaissance Festival, I sit near the wood carvers. They have built a spring pole lathe. I love the smell of the wood as they are shaping it.
Cool, thank you! 😊
Another beaut in the books 👌🏽
😊
Love it! I knew you had one of them hi-tech chip collection systems! 😂 And, don’t worry about the hole, it’s always Philled! 😉
LOL! 😊
Strangely beautiful.
😊
It is a YES.
Fill McCrackin!
LOL!
I second that - glad also no resin and agree I like all natural .
Thank you, Brian! 😊
I know you’re not a fan of epoxy, but sometimes it will let the beauty shine through great peace
😊
Texture and color all worth the effort.
😊
This is my favorite piece yet!
Yay! Thank you, Diane! 😊
Hi mister Phil, from the Netherlands.. I loved the colors from the wood. (now transelate) Ik heb je goedemorgen- middag-avond gemist. Hallo--- Haudie, zo iets 😄
Thank you! 😊
A pleasure as always😊 Thanks for sharing.
😊
Lovely!
Love your humor and expertise!
Thank you, Melinda! 😊
I tried to read a lot of the comments before I made one and I couldn't find what I was looking for so in case you were wondering Juniper's are related to Cedar most Juniper's are in the same family which is why they look like they do. And Cedar is the most popular wood for making pencils which is why you have that smell. But it is another beautiful piece as always thank you for these wonderful videos!
Thanks for the info and for commenting, Andy! 😊
I think instead of filling the large void with dust, that this piece would be a perfect candidate for a resin pour. Glow-in-the-dark purple/white with glitter ... if I only could I would! Colors are vibrant, looks good as is too!
😊
Really nice piece came out of that, Phil. Thank you.
😊
No no non, don’t fill the hole , it’s going to look a freak of nature in the best way .great colour .❤
😊
Hey, Phil! Beautiful bowl, but when you asked your audience whether or not we wanted you to fill the hole, I said yes, but thought you meant ‘PHIL’ the hole. 🧐 🙄🤣I thought the ‘fill’ looked a little like fine sand or gravel and was pretty in its own way. Thank you for another great video!
LOL! Thanks, Michael! 😊
I like it. Very unique piece. And I think you told me what the dead bush in front of my house is. When
My parents and I were building this house about 45 years ago. My mom planted 2 bushes in the front close to the house. One died years ago but the other hung in there till a few years ago. Still had some life, but mostly browned out. Had grown to about 10 foot tall. Last time I tried to cut out just the brown dead stuff, there wasn’t going to be much left. Cut everything but the main trunk and bigger branches. That’s when I saw the reddish inside. Haven’t done anything with it yet, but seeing this I know what it will look like .
Interesting, thanks, Bob! 😊
Fun, challenging piece. You done good! Cindy headed here this weekend. Perhaps another piece of interesting wood will migrate east on her way home. And no protesting that you already have enough wood! 🤪
Haha, OK, no protesting! Thanks, Valerie! 😊
Beautiful bowl. At one angle looks like a bunny 🐰.
Thank you, Sandra! 😊
Absolutely beautiful! ❤❤❤😊
Thank you! 😊
Nice job, Phil. never any mistakes only solutions.
Thanks, Bob! 😊
That’s a beautiful piece of wood ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
😊
