That hit me. As I've had a very difficult childhood (my dad killed my mum and I was sent to a different family causing me to have a lot of pain and sadness. I also couldn't get any friends at school and I was bullied thoroughly. This song made me happy again and it was like the light in the darkness during that period of my life.) Sadly, the theory is that Lucy "died" and Nyu lived on. Basically means that Lucy died in pain and lives on as Nyu with everyone else. Huhu the entire anime made me bawl my eyes out the second time I watched it.

ehh - I think its pretty deep and intense, the gore and darkness was part of that for me. then again I dont like and often despise most things which are 'popular' so i shouldn't be the one to judge that.
I have deeper memories with this song then anyone else at this point. I spent all day with my brother and sister in law, went traveling, to a theme park, and home again. We watched Elfen Lied until everyone fell asleep, it was the best night of my life. Now it's my nephews lullaby song; funny, how time flew, just like that.
This was the first non-shounan anime I had ever watched, and it got me into so many other shows. It's not the best anime or manga out there (in fact it isn't even close), but it'll always be one of my favorites.

This is a dangerous ass anime. It gets you with the viceral nature of the anime and the intrigue of what she is, then very very slowly adds emotion to the anime. Then around midway just rams you in the face with a brick at 100miles an hour with just pure emotion that doesn't let up till the ending. Fucking amazing anime.
A quote I think fits the message: "The world pushes us without mercy, and when some push back the world points and cries evil". If you don't get what it is saying it is basically saying that the world pushes those who are different, but when the different push back, the different are the monsters. The message of the anime, in my opinion, is the same as the meaning of the quote to me. Kaede was different, treated different, and hurt for being different, yet she was considered the monster by normal people. The message of the anime is pretty deep, speaking of prejudice and how those who are different are treated like monsters, and yet treating them such is okay to do so without being considered a monster. Once again, this is my opinion of the message, accept it or deny it, it's what I get from the story.

The poem (if you haven't read it go now and read it or you won't understand what I will be saying) is much more related to the anime than you think.The elf symbolizes different people (i.e Lucy) and how we call them but not for the reason that they want (i.e bully them make them suffer use them for experiments) and how even when they fall we don't care about them and if they interrupt our "plans" that they are evil.sorry for my bad English and explanation.

This melody made me think deep shit. Are we alone in the universe? Does God exist? Will I ever get a girlfriend? Depressing shit this song is, yet it is one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard, and it goes perfectly with Elfen Lied.
Elfen Lied continues to remind me to this day, looking back after years. Anime is a dying breed of entertainment - maybe not specifically since trash like Attack on Titan but it's not this great anymore, Boku Dake ga Inai macho was deep for like a second. This song is great but the original song Lilium in Latin is better IMO, it encapsulates the music box part part at the end as well.

First time I watched Elfen Lied 9 years ago (I was 17) and it calls very strong emotions in me. Since that days I always remembered storylines of heroes of this anime, but life moves on even you don't want this and other things (films, games, studies, work etc.) gradually led me aside of this scenario (time lays waste all things). So, I remembered: Elfen Lied is very strong composition, but that's all... And about week ago I suddenly decided to rewatch it... All impressions totally captured me again! And even more than before I think. Now I'm 26, and even now I cried at some moments. It's not just nostalgia (although it is too), but the anime itself is divine! Now I think I could rewatch Elfen Lied in any age and it will easily awake all these emotions again. I even read the manga few days ago (never did it before). Although, in my opinion, manga is immeasurably worse than anime. And this song - "Lilium" is something indescribable... And all this little details - music box, broken clock etc. only amplified the atmosphere. Not to mention, nature of characters (and especially the ending) in anime much better than in manga. What about 2 season... I think it would be unnecessary. Now it's harmonious series and I'm afraid additional episodes could ruin it.

I think it was quite a true ending. Lucy/Nyu did bear her own guilty obsession for years and when Kouta forgive her, that made her gone with peace. Kouta did also bear the pain for watching the girl he love killed his own family, but he still forgive her then just to watch another one he loved dying right before his eyes. His cousin might be annoying a little bit, but she's the one stand beside him for years, helped him move on with life. So that's a reasonable ending for me even though it's so sad to see. Nyu is the pure kind one who love the life and people, but that's some kind of running from the reality. Lucy is pure too, but with the instinct killing to repay what the world did to her. Both cannot ending good. The day she finds the way out for her also be the day she repay for what she did. Such... sad.

I watched it a year ago. I usually watch weird/funnier animes so this hit me hard. I am now trying to forget the tragic events so I don't end up crying in a corner again.
Undoubtedly the most beautiful song, and anime, that I've ever seen. There are other shows that might hit you in the feels, but this, it hurt me. The hopeful sadness of this series isn't something I can really describe, but it was something I needed to feel.
Elfen Lied is original (I believe) while the Marionette's is just Grandfather Clock, which is a well known and old song. I'd actually vote for Elfen Lied.

This song and the original intro to Naruto are some of my favorites. They've always calmed me down when I needed to chill, and got me excited whenever I was about to watch another episode. People can go ahead and say I'm a weab for loving these animes, but that will never change the fact that they bring me so much nostalgia and so much joy.
Cried at this because I discovered this story in my teens and I remember coming across this exact video with that picture of Lucy. The sad forlorn look on her face touched me along with the little tune of 'Elfin Lied'. Now at 26 it reminds me of when I was that teenager....staring at that picture at my desk at home.....

We all know this anime is a masterpiece. Many people think it's just pure gore and then some, but the message this anime gives is so deep. I truly feel for Lucy and hope she finds peace with Kouta, this was the first ever thing I've watched that's made me cry. The quotes are so deep and sad, 'Aren't we all monsters inside?' That line gave me the chills and caused me to rethink my life. The message this anime gives is that life can be unfair sometimes. This anime is truly a work of art, not even Mirai Nikki ' s ending compares to the sheer sorrow and depression this caused me. Added to the fact that this music is beautiful and sad, I can't stop listening to it. That made the anime 10x better. I hope lucy was at the door, because if that wasn't the case I will never rest easy. Her story is so sad, from Nyu being the little carefree girl Kouta knew, and Lucy being her feelings. As Lucy once said,'everybody in this place is unhappy. And since they're unhappy, they are probably looking for someone worse off than they are.' These quotes are so true that it hurts.

I have deeper memories with this song then anyone else at this point. I spent all day with my brother and sister in law, went traveling, to a theme park, and home again. We watched Elfen Lied until everyone fell asleep, it was the best night of my life. Now it's my nephews lullaby song; funny, how time flew, just like that.

This was the first non-shounan anime I had ever watched, and it got me into so many other shows. It's not the best anime or manga out there (in fact it isn't even close), but it'll always be one of my favorites.
Any recommendations on hand? I enjoyed Elfen Lied, but I don't have enough time to search around for more through trial and error.

This is a dangerous ass anime. It gets you with the viceral nature of the anime and the intrigue of what she is, then very very slowly adds emotion to the anime. Then around midway just rams you in the face with a brick at 100miles an hour with just pure emotion that doesn't let up till the ending. Fucking amazing anime.
A quote I think fits the message: "The world pushes us without mercy, and when some push back the world points and cries evil". If you don't get what it is saying it is basically saying that the world pushes those who are different, but when the different push back, the different are the monsters. The message of the anime, in my opinion, is the same as the meaning of the quote to me. Kaede was different, treated different, and hurt for being different, yet she was considered the monster by normal people. The message of the anime is pretty deep, speaking of prejudice and how those who are different are treated like monsters, and yet treating them such is okay to do so without being considered a monster. Once again, this is my opinion of the message, accept it or deny it, it's what I get from the story.

Elfen Lied continues to remind me to this day, looking back after years. Anime is a dying breed of entertainment - maybe not specifically since trash like Attack on Titan but it's not this great anymore, Boku Dake ga Inai macho was deep for like a second.
This song is great but the original song Lilium in Latin is better IMO, it encapsulates the music box part part at the end as well.

First time I watched Elfen Lied 9 years ago (I was 17) and it calls very strong emotions in me. Since that days I always remembered storylines of heroes of this anime, but life moves on even you don't want this and other things (films, games, studies, work etc.) gradually led me aside of this scenario (time lays waste all things). So, I remembered: Elfen Lied is very strong composition, but that's all...
And about week ago I suddenly decided to rewatch it... All impressions totally captured me again! And even more than before I think. Now I'm 26, and even now I cried at some moments.
It's not just nostalgia (although it is too), but the anime itself is divine!
Now I think I could rewatch Elfen Lied in any age and it will easily awake all these emotions again.
I even read the manga few days ago (never did it before). Although, in my opinion, manga is immeasurably worse than anime. And this song - "Lilium" is something indescribable... And all this little details - music box, broken clock etc. only amplified the atmosphere. Not to mention, nature of characters (and especially the ending) in anime much better than in manga.
What about 2 season... I think it would be unnecessary. Now it's harmonious series and I'm afraid additional episodes could ruin it.

I think it was quite a true ending. Lucy/Nyu did bear her own guilty obsession for years and when Kouta forgive her, that made her gone with peace. Kouta did also bear the pain for watching the girl he love killed his own family, but he still forgive her then just to watch another one he loved dying right before his eyes. His cousin might be annoying a little bit, but she's the one stand beside him for years, helped him move on with life. So that's a reasonable ending for me even though it's so sad to see.
Nyu is the pure kind one who love the life and people, but that's some kind of running from the reality. Lucy is pure too, but with the instinct killing to repay what the world did to her. Both cannot ending good. The day she finds the way out for her also be the day she repay for what she did. Such... sad.

This song and the original intro to Naruto are some of my favorites. They've always calmed me down when I needed to chill, and got me excited whenever I was about to watch another episode. People can go ahead and say I'm a weab for loving these animes, but that will never change the fact that they bring me so much nostalgia and so much joy.
Cried at this because I discovered this story in my teens and I remember coming across this exact video with that picture of Lucy. The sad forlorn look on her face touched me along with the little tune of 'Elfin Lied'. Now at 26 it reminds me of when I was that teenager....staring at that picture at my desk at home.....

when I hear this song.. I think about the manga version of this story.... Lucy had a younger brother in the manga... he was used as a killing machine.. and he was only about 6 when he met lucy for the first time....he walked up to her.. gave her a smile.......but before 1 word was said..........lucy cut of his head, killing him instantaneously........the reason she killed him was because she didn't want him to grow up and become like her.. she wanted him to be free... god lucy I can't imagine the kind of life you must have had.... im so sorry... R.I.P
We all know this anime is a masterpiece. Many people think it's just pure gore and then some, but the message this anime gives is so deep. I truly feel for Lucy and hope she finds peace with Kouta, this was the first ever thing I've watched that's made me cry. The quotes are so deep and sad,
'Aren't we all monsters inside?'
That line gave me the chills and caused me to rethink my life. The message this anime gives is that life can be unfair sometimes. This anime is truly a work of art, not even Mirai Nikki ' s ending compares to the sheer sorrow and depression this caused me. Added to the fact that this music is beautiful and sad, I can't stop listening to it. That made the anime 10x better. I hope lucy was at the door, because if that wasn't the case I will never rest easy. Her story is so sad, from Nyu being the little carefree girl Kouta knew, and Lucy being her feelings.
As Lucy once said,'everybody in this place is unhappy. And since they're unhappy, they are probably looking for someone worse off than they are.' These quotes are so true that it hurts.
