I agree: everyone made it great. But the reason so many say Angelina made it great is that she chose the band, she directed the arrangement of the song, she was the boss of the operation, and then sang it with attitude so it was done right (and may have done several takes to get certain parts just right). So yes, it wasn't just one person, it was the music director, the lyricist, the vocalist, and the melding of all musicians together. Angelina gets praise for this performance because at 9 she played these multiple roles. On this set, they called her "the boss". And if you asked her, I'm sure she'd say, "we were lucky to be able to work together to do this."

It’s funny because you are right, her dramatic performance outshines her vocal performance, you can still hear the child singing, but you don’t care because of how she wraps it in her dramatic performance, which most perceive as emotion and connection to the song.

Ellis, thanks for this nice reaction with Angelina. This is the homage of Angelina to Screamin' (the portrait on the candle) and isn't an imitation, rather a tribute to a singer she has much listened to and admires. Certainly the only girl in the world who knows him and who also thinks of singing him without any fear is she. It's incredible that this adaptation is all her own (the sheets written) and that at that age she was able to evaluate and transform, according to her sensitivity, such a particular and powerful song 😊 ❤️
This is Angelina, the incredible magical little girl and this is probably the best reinterpretation made by a singer in over 60 years of this song. But please include Angelina's original link, for support her 🤗

Good reaction, you brought up some important points. However, Angelina had a bigger role than you are aware of. Yes this was supposed to be a basic blues song. The day the original was recorded (Screamin' Jay Hawkins - image on the candle) the producer brought in food and a load of beers. They all had maybe a little too much of the beer, hence a performance totally uninhibited! The result was more a piece of theatre than a song. Angelina gave her own interpretation, plus adjustments to the musical arrangement (notes she wrote to the producer). Also, she chose the musicians that she had worked with before. Attitude - yes she saw that this was the essential element in this performance. Angelina is into jazz in a big way, so this is what she gave us. Her vocal talent is quite obvious, her timing and phrasing, and that incredible breath control. All of this from a 9 year old. I'm glad that you liked it - there is so much more for you to enjoy!

Arrangement? by Angelina Jordan. She rearranged it from the original arranged and sung by singer (and writer) of the song many many moons ago. His name was Screamin' Jay Hawkins. That was his photo on the candle she held up at the start of the video. Do you really think all of us discount the musicians? Where do you get that from? This band was amazing .. and truly everyone was connected and playing the same piece of music (yes, the vibe, the structure, the "attitude" too.) It is essential .. every one of them is.

Sadly Angelina's grandfather died in 2018. Angelina’s maternal grandmother Mery Zamani has had tremendous influence on Angelina and her career as she introduced Angelina to Jazz at an early age. Mery is a famous Iranian contemporary writer, poet and painter who was also a child prodigy herself being on Radio Iran's Children program at age 4 and began writing poetry and painting by the age of 9. Later Mery was trained in art at the Tokyo Academy in Japan where she met her husband, who was Japanese, during her master degree's training in Japan. There is a nine year old video showing some of Mery's artwork in a home setting: ua-cam.com/video/i9NxX0tSjS0/v-deo.html
---- Mery has a UA-cam channel that supports Angelina called Angelina Jordan Fanclub Mosarz: ua-cam.com/channels/hM_lpT4shdnsez93QMJPig.html. There are lots of videos in it that could only have been taken by an insider or family member. Mery is also widely known under the artist alias name Mosarz
---- Mery illustrated the book that Angelina wrote ("Mellom to hjerter" that translates to Between Two Hearts) and had published in November 2015 when Angelina was 9 years-old and became the youngest published author in Norway. The book is based on Angelina's notes in her diary/notebooks and describes her meeting with a shoeless girl. A podcast was published by Angelina’s publisher, Cappelen Damm, in 2015. In it Angelina talks with Erling Kittelsen, a Norwegian author and poet and friend of the family, about her book. Angelina tells of her understanding with the little girl that Angelina will not wear shoes when she performs and that the little girl will pray for Angelina. During pauses in the talk, we hear small extracts from the book. This book should be put on a children's reading list: ua-cam.com/video/6p6iL989P_8/v-deo.html
There are three published Angelina videos created and directed by Mery:
---- Fly Me To The Moon (as a 10-year old: ua-cam.com/video/jnnzbdt4_RE/v-deo.html. On March 23, 2021 you reacted to a shortened version she sung on TV 2 on Senkveld "The Late Show" when Angelina was 8-years old)
---- When You're Smiling (as an 11-year old. This is fun video that starts out with Angelina missing school attendance in her classroom. She is riding a bike and comes across a sad girl crying and stops to see what is wrong. You will have to watch the video to see what happens next: ua-cam.com/video/bLuNQ6s7fCQ/v-deo.html)
---- Shield (Angelina wrote this song at 12-years old. Mery did an artistic video of Angelina performing Shield at 13-years old: ua-cam.com/video/m8OCbAlr_48/v-deo.html. Note that in my opinion the best performance of this song was by Angelina as a 12-year old on the very popular Scandinavian talk show Skavlan (2.5 to 3 million viewers per show): ua-cam.com/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/v-deo.html)
[In the interview (changes to English at about 0:36 mark) before Angelina sung on Skavlan, paraphrasing, she said that when she sings she goes into an endless other world that is full of happiness. She said that the song Shield is about someone you love and whose strong love protects you wherever you are. Angelina said the song's sound was inspired by the Bond films. Her favorite Bond film songs are Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger. She sings a few bars of Diamonds Are Forever a cappella. She said that a highlight of her career was singing for Quincy Jones' 85th birthday concert in London. When asked if she feels like a 12 year old, Angelina says she only does when she looks at her passport: ua-cam.com/video/97hjWg4ToRQ/v-deo.html]
---- 7th Heaven (wrote as a 15-year old. There are three video versions. The audio only version with the last measure being different: ua-cam.com/video/N0yK_07a1_U/v-deo.html. The lyric version that uses Mery’s painting Rows Of Angels as the background and the original audio: ua-cam.com/video/o4Vl3I1WWq4/v-deo.html. The studio version: ua-cam.com/video/bM8DzMRbiIc/v-deo.html)
[The studio video was created by Stargate who is a top shelf record producing and songwriting team (Tor E. Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen) that is now based in Los Angeles. The team's genres include R&B, pop and hip hop. They have won 4 Grammy Awards and been nominated 17 times. Besides Angelina, they have produced or written for Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Wiz Khalifa, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Rita Ora, Normani, Mis-Teeq, Celine Dion, Blue, Janet Jackson, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Sam Smith, Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Pink, Sia, Whitney Houston, Nas, Chris Brown, Khalid, Charli XCX, Trey Songz and others.]
[Angelina said: “The initial idea for ‘7th Heaven’ was that I love the number 7, and ‘heaven’ is such a powerful word and makes you dream away,” she explained. “I collaborated with Stargate to create ‘7th Heaven.’ The background story of making this song was that I had this melody that I played for Tor and Mikkel and it turned out that they loved the idea and it went pretty smooth from there to the finish [the] song.” Angelina and her team kept tweaking the song until it was perfect and ready for release. “We definitely tried many different elements to feel the right sound to it,” she said.]
[Angelina also revealed that she is often inspired to create music from personal pain: “Strong emotions, mainly painful ones, often make me write music,” she shared.]
[Angelina said that the music video will look like: “The visual will look something like old school meets new school kinda vibe to it,” she assured. “I love the styles they had before and I want to bring it back again.”]

What you're trying to say...I think....is: The most important thing about singers is how they move people. You don't have to have incredible vocal skills to do that, but it doesn't hurt. Some people with incredible vocal talent cannot move people, and some people with mediocre vocal talent can do it as well as the most gifted singers (Johnny Cash - Hurt comes to mind).

    • @DonaldLancon
      @DonaldLancon 3 роки тому

We-e-ell… I wouldn't say _nothing_ like the original. While it doesn't sound much like the 1956 studio recording, the musical arrangement here is actually pretty similar to some live performances Screamin' Jay Hawkins did much later (specifically, in the 1990s - performances, BTW, which were already on UA-cam when Angelina would have been deciding how she wanted to do the song). So it's possible they (Angelina and the band) were basing this arrangement on one of those live performances. Note that I'm not saying she wasn't involved at all with deciding how this would be played. I just think that saying she "did the arrangement herself" is perhaps a bit of an overstatement.
That being said, I should point out that we know, based on both testimony and actual video evidence, that she definitely "knew her shit" when it came to music, even at this young of an age. (Note to Ellis: If no one's mentioned this yet, there's a video of a rehearsal from when she was 8 where she names the exact note she wants the trumpet player to hit at one point in the song ["Ais", meaning A-sharp]. And they weren't working off of sheet music; she just knew what the note should be.)

I'm a huge blues fan. So l love her blues performances. Try her modest rewrite of l just want to make love to you (titled Lovin You). Or her cover of It's a man's world (the one at the jazz festival; not the Norwegian Armed Forces Orchestra) Also if you like SRV, try Joe Bonamassa, maybe with Beth Hart; I'll Take Care of You). Finally AJ worked with some of these same guys in a practice session trying out Screamin Jay Hawkins Portrait of a Man, rewritten as Portrait of a Child. See how she rolls when working on songs with professional musicians and why she gets their respect.

When you were talking about how everyone had to be great to make this great (not just Angelina), I was thinking, yeah, but you've gotta admit, if you didn't know anything about Angelina beforehand, and you had to choose the one person in this lineup who had the potential to FUBAR this more than anyone else, it would have been the little girl who was fixin' to sing. [LOL]

To that dude your talking about. The music does not lead the singer. The singer leads the tempo. A good musician can follow no problem. The music structure will always remain the same to the song. Without that adjustment the singer is knocked of balance. It becomes nothing more than an instrumental with a voice accent. One cannot overpower the other.

Yes all the muisc was very good and professional .Angulina hired good musicians. But any of the studio musicians could be replaced by others who could do the same. The irreplaceable element is Angulina Jordon. Thay deserve recognition. But she is the star. If you go to a concert the ticket taker is involved. Nobody goes to a concert to see the ticket taker. When she gets around to touring nobody will be going to watch her backup musicians. Thay will be there. Thay will be good. Thay deserve respect. But any of them are replaceable. She's not replaceable.

It's about the artist not the musicians ! You're reaction should be about Angelina ! No one cares about your breakdown about the musical score ! I appreciate you like the song and for your information that is a classic standard blues ballad known throughout the world ! You really don't have a grasp of American blues music history ! Screamin Jay Hawkins is an American blues singer whose original rendition came out in 1956 and has been cover thousands of times ! I wish you all the very best now I understand your channel is about musicians and musical score and not about voice analysis and techniques ! I wish you all the very best in all your future endeavours but I will follow other reactors and vocal analysts that I'm in tune with ! I'm a musician and you have a great understanding of music and your guitar work is spot on ! Thanks again and have a great day ! 👍🇨🇦🤗

I believe you said you weren't familiar with the original (by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, circa 1956), so here it is: ua-cam.com/video/orNpH6iyokI/v-deo.html. After listening to the original, listen to Angelina's arrangement again. It makes apparent the genius of this 9-year-old musician: AJ captures the spirit of Hawkins' iconic bluesy/jazzy version, but then improves on it. For example, she has perfect vibrato and even screams and growls on pitch! When I first heard this recording, I realized AJ is indeed a child prodigy.

Ellis my oldest son makes the most wicked great Cre''me Brule'e I've ever taste and I've been lucky enough to taste some pretty damn good takes on that dish. But I would eat his off that lid. Now I might not dig in to the bottom the way I do his. The top down to an eighth of an inch would be in trouble.
Angelina never sang this song this way ever again because of possible vocal damage, but nobody seems to mind. Angelina during her 10-11 year had some of the best most complete vocals of songs that I've heard. What I mean by that is when she sang whatever she went for she got. These were the more traditional songs like, 'Fly Me To The Moon', 'Feelin' Good' and this song she just sang. You should see how she is in front of an audience. She opened for Nora Jones in Seoul. Nora wanted her to do one more song watch the video to see what happens.

Ellis I am breaking protocol here. I am also sending you a link for a song, 'All I Want For Christmas' cover sung by Daneliya. It is live and she is basically the same age as Angelina. Even though it is a seasonal song, I listen to it at least once a week just to brighten my mood. Look how much fun she is having on stage. Anyway, listen to her if you will.

OK, Ellis. If this piece is in your "pocket," then check out Angelina singing the Etta James' song, "I'd Rather Go Blind." Angelina's version was uploaded when she was 13, but several major fans say she was 12 when she recorded it. It's short, so you would have time to follow it up with Etta's version. That would make for some interesting comparisons.

On the plectrum or strummed instrument side, I offer two performances that should readily hold your attention. I know that a lifetime may not be long enough to master six strings, so how about an instrument with just three: the balalaika? Here is the link to Alexei Arkhipovskiy playing a medley of pieces on the balalaika in a performance that he calls Sharmanka.

Closer to home for you is a 17-year-old girl who bills herself as "Tina S" playing a classical piece on guitar. 36 million views; must be something to it. ... How much "woodshed" time do you think she spent honing this performance? Oh, and, does she smile enough for you, given critiques you have received on the same matter?
