Agreed. She makes the words stand out. I think that's one reason why she gets such an emotional connection. It possibly doesn't matter much what the words actually are, as long as they catch an emotion.

our reactions are probably the most thought-provoking on UA-cam. I like you listen to the human voice as an instrument. Only on subsequent listenings, will I concentrate on the lyrics. I may actually pull them up and review them or read them as I listening. (My hearing is poor and I can seldom understand the lyrics), but that doesn't subtract from my enjoyment of the human voice.
That said Angelina is somewhat different, and she is a storyteller, and I pay more attention to her lyrics than normal especially on her originals. Maybe it is because she reaches into parts of my soul that few others can reach. Sometimes I make as much sense as you do, with my unfinished thoughts.
    Another excellent reaction.

I find your Reaction like a Savant. As Angelina Sings and the Guitar plays You see the Melody of Both as in keys. I'm no expert but it sounds as the all the Notes just Float in your mind. I maybe wrong. I found your reaction very interesting. The more you hear Angelina and her Runs as they say You'll be Blown Away just How She Plays with the Notes of the Melodies. To me She is as you say a Beautiful Violin in which I find to be truly Soothing. l'm anticipating more reactions you have with her. Thank you

Very good reaction. When I first listened to this performance, Angelina's voice and expression of emotion grabbed my attention. Having listened to it a few more time I took in the lyrics, heard the story. After quite a few more times I started to take in Ivan's playing and his reaction to Angelina. I had the feeling that there were one or two points where he was about to loose it, or at least the tempo - it was almost like he had been hypnotised by the sound of Angelina's voice. Perhaps when you have listened to it a few more times you will pick up more from it. Now I will have to listen to Angelina singing Autumn Leaves and check out the similarity in the chords...

Right, one can’t pay attention to everything at once. Can you imagine a guy listening Angelina concluded to me “it’s [just] a little girl!”?
It depends on what we focus our attention, may be on the guitar, the lyrics, visuals - many comment on Ivan’s luck and heaven moments here -, or her voice! Angelina has all those layers and variations that we only know after listening a bunch of times, and still getting something new every time.

Great reaction Ellis, love your insights, perspective and unfilthered (although some what post-edited) honesty.
Clearly the emotions a singer is able to convey are pivotal to the connection we, the audience may have and experience.
Many have said it and I'd probably have to agree, that AJA could sing us the phonebook and we would still feel the beauty of her soul, no story needed.
Within the lyrics however, is where the artistery of a great storyteller is found or missed.
And Angelina Jordan Astar might just be the greatest storytelling singer we've had in a long, long time.
Angelina has become a cherished artist by many, mainly through her interpetations of other peoples originals and works.
As the true artist she is, it's difficult to imagine that becoming her main dish in the future.
And it is through her own words - about her own experiences, hopes and thoughts, that she can potentially produce legendary greatness.

Yep, im just trying to understand why her voice has such a grip on me. I mean, dude, its been two years and im still listening every frickin day. Its comforting, evocative, and entertaining all at once. But she sculpts every note with texture and color and it falls on my ear in different ways every time so the song never grows old. Ellis, you're the man! Yes we all listen to music differently. You just illustrated something ab out music that I have felt for a long time: that we experience music differently from other art forms. When we look at a painting, a photograph, a sculpture, we see, we recognise, we understand/connect, we feel. In music, the sequencing - and this is how music is different from every other art form. We feel first, then we see and perhaps recognise. Then, we perhaps understand. The feeling comes first, which is why the language doesn't matter, or the words. Not at first. Thank you for reminding me of that!

Great explanation , as musician guitarist myself I listen as you do. her voice is so memorizing that understanding her words is not that important , one could go and read the lyrics before or after and get the story of the song but the artistry of the song for me is the coherence of her voice and the music as a magical experience in unity ., even though just her voice is enough to mesmerize one when she sings ,together is bliss at another level .

About the chord changes: Besides Autumn leaves there is some similarity with The windmills of your mind, I believe! Following the circle of fifths, partly. I don't listen to the lyrics at first either. As a child I was mesmerized by flamenco music. Both the singing and the guitars! I felt the passion and sadness of loss, but I didn't understand a word.
But I have to say that the storytelling way Angelina can sing makes me listen more to the lyrics than other singers do! I don't know why. She is really special

It is helping me to understand why I enjoy music so much and to really appreciate some of the less showy parts of a song for what they are, possibly more difficult, or just possibly adding just the touch it needs to turn an OK song into a great song. I listen to Angie, Ivan and the lyrics all at once. When Ivan was her accompanient, the would give him a call and say "hey, can you come over? We want to shoot s video". He would come over, they would shoot the breeze for a while, run through the song a few times and shoot the video. Poor Ivan would have to pay very close attention to Angie as she would often change her phrasing on the fly. If you watch it again, watch Ivan as he tries to stay in time with Angie. He had a hard job but did it well, I think. Loved your reaction. It's so refreshing to listen to a reaction to a 'music' video from someone who knows 'music'. Thanks Ellis (Guitarist Isn't a Vocal Coach)!!! That made me laugh.

You're free of course to listen to and analyze any music the way you want. I do not take amiss that you do not pay attention to the lyrics. These are your reaction videos after all and you decide on the content. Even so, as a fellow musician I advise, not ask for, to pay attention to the lyrics if possible, for your own good, on or off cam. I'm not gonna say you can't be touched by music otherwise, but I'm sure you miss out on something greater if you left out the lyrics. In view of songs or other vocal compositions there lies a beauty that can only be felt and understood through the awareness of the music in relation to the lyrics. Every opera would be only half as exciting if you didn't get the story, wouldn't it? I'm not trying to say that vocal music is better than instrumentals, it's just another thing. But I wouldn't separate the lyrics from the music in vocal compositions, the lyrics are part of the composition after all, a very important part.

    That ending tho. :D
But I can answer this question, for me at least. YES!
    Some examples:
Lara Fabian - Je Suis Malade
    Diana Navarro - El Perdon
    Chavella Vargas - La Llorona
Diana Akundinova - Blizzard (it is originally Russian, but I can't write Cyrillic)
I had no idea what those songs are about the first time I heard them, but I fell in love instantly when I heard them. ;)
Is the emotion conveyed, not necessarily the word by word meaning which makes the biggest impact.

I don't know for sure but Ivan, the guitarist, has said that often when working with Angelina he has about 10 minutes to learn the song. This may very well be a variation of the chord pattern he knew from another song - guitarists wanting to learn a song quickly do that, as you know. Of course, I could be talking out of my butt, too. I usually don't really listen to the lyrics either until I've heard the song a couple of times. 😎

I think your musical brain is a lot faster than the brains of people watching your videos. For example, in Formula 1, the drivers can explain things that occurred during the race as if it was done in slow motion. Is probably hard for people to understand that you are doing 2 things at the same time.

To technical for a layman like me. There is a artist that is a singer and for most of us that's it. We want the singer to speak to our soul with her voice tone and interpretation of the meaning of the song's words. For most of us to appreciate that, you have to listen to the words. One of Angelina's greatest asset is the fact that she let you listen to every word and she is an outstanding story teller. If you miss that then what is the purpose of listening to her. The music with her voice is only an extra by product especially take in consideration that it is mostly only her voice with a mic and a guitar. I know that is not your take of how you are listening to songs but that is not the norm.

Perfect reaction my friend. And I totally feel you. It's the exact same way with me. I NEVER listen to the lyrics the first time I hear a new song. So the lyrics is secondary, at best. One of my favorite artists, Zucchero, sings mostly in Italian. I know maybe 20 Italian words. Lol.
After having listened maybe 20 times I may be lip syncing, no matter the language. If you'd play Kyu Sakamoto's Sukiyaki I bet 10 dollars you'd think I knew Japanese. Kinda funny. But absolutely understandable. At least in MY mind. 😁😂

My guess that most of Angelina's fans prefer her take on songs they've already heard, especially these contemporary ones, tells me you're right on about it being the singer not the song. What's slightly different for me is that she makes me listen to the lyrics of songs I've never been interested in. The song she dedicated to her friend, Avicii, passed me by completely until she did it. Also, I played the video of Angelina practising Love On The Brain to my goddaughter, a die-hard fan of Rihanna. I asked her if she had the original to which she replied that it's a track I regularly skip after a few seconds while in her home or car. I love Angelina's interpretation yet had no idea I had even heard Rihanna's.

Sure, there are similarities with «Autumn Leaves», but even more with «Parisienne Walkways» (Thin Lizzy/Gary Moore), which I believe «borrows» the melody line from a French folk tune. Something like that. The lyrics here are good, but it is Angelina that makes the experience fantastic, with good help from Ivan. (And I love that they kept that late/almost missed chord change in, rather than doing another take. Didn’t matter a bit.)

So - as I have watched a handful of your videos, you are not a "reactor". You are a deconstructionist. Which is an absolutely awesome academic pursuit with deep roots. Critical (Marxist) post-modernistic theory is all about that (and no it has nothing to do with communism for readers that may be confused by the mentioning of Carl Marx).
Deconstruction in academia is found in musical theory but it is probably most famous in linguistics and literature studies, but also in sociology and history and cultural studies and... The french cats and post-modernism started to point out that the truth of a sentence like "I want to go home" can have all sorts of connotations. The words in themself do not really describe truth or reality since context and subtext and all sorts of stuff are needed. So they started to deconstruct (which is different from actually picking apart chords in a song since that in itself do not require context - that is more like deciphering.
Let me give an example with words in a sentence, since it is hard to write notes here. "Hi boy, come here". Perfectly fine sentence. Read these words in a novel from 1830 set in the southern states vs watching a social media video clip of a father and son playing in the pool in 2021 - the tiny context changes the "feel" of the few words even with this limited information. It can even change their meaning from "loving to hostile".
If someone loves a book - do not read the "New Yorker". There, one risk reading Salman Rushdie himself ripping your favourite book apart with hard-core deconstruction over 5 pages. It certainly is high praise - but it may be hard to identify in the reality of seeing the book one loves being analytically ripped to pieces to investigate its structural elements. It can easily feel cynical - and it is. It is the point. It is academic. For fans - that can feel like their own heart are ripped out and analysed with it.
So hear me out, my friend. I agree with you. I grew up as an instrumentalist in music (before turning into a geophysicist). Somehow it is more accepted to use "analytics" on pure instrumental pieces. This is youtube and people are used to see reactors to any singer slap their own hands to their face in awe.
As we know - if you try to react to an instrumental piece (classical orchestra, solo classical guitar, jazz, prog, cerebral electronica - pick and choose) you will get ca 2 views. Reaction videos on youtube are fueled by billions of people who want to hear what you have to say about their favourite vocalist standing at the front of the band. Not what you have to say about the quality of the drummer sitting behind a pretty awesome drummer back in the days now being the busy frontman of Foo Fighters. Everyone wants your opinion of the frontman/girl. For everything else - New Yorker (and similar) is the location to read a deconstruction piece that takes around an hour just to read the first time before reading it again to search for the nuances.
Of course, you get downvotes, my friend. You promise that you will react to say "Angelina Jordan" in your title, which millions of people love. Instead, you are ignoring her - and instead, focus on the structure of the song. In this video, you do not even bother to mention Ivan Mendez's name - a dude that deserves way more love and attention for what he does.
Just be honest about what you do (and know what you do is New Yorker level interesting for fans).
Try this song again and call the video "Guitarist analyses how Ivan Mendez is backing a young talented singer". Because THAT could be interesting for many guitarists to the point that you could grow more views by being honest about how you are really good with critical analyses of structures (yes marxism - still not political - pure academic methods).
As everyone has said since before Aristoteles - share what you know. Since you do not do vocals that most people focus on - share what you know and make your titles and content reflect that. And do not go defensive. 👍

I don't understand, did you like the damn song or not? Just kidding. Just like watching reactors, some cry some don' appreciate the genre. I'm blown away by her control of breath, fry mixed with other effects, some times seem like a new thing, she created. Lower register is some thing else. Too many for one talent. she gets better and shows us more. Lets see if she sets a new standard.

Because her roots are so firmly implanted in jazz, Angelina is able to evoke
emotion in ways that non-jazz singers can. That is why her ballads are far
superior to those she covers concerning mega stars like Adele. Same can be
said for Rhianna and Lan Del Rey. It's as if you are getting a trifecta of jazz
singers that include Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse. They are two of the
singers who influenced Angelina the most.

Hi @Ellis, again a profound reaction, this time I liked your thought on music and language and emotion and how music transcends barriers. And this brings me to the point that I wanna suggest you to do a reaction on Maneskin "Coraline". Anyway I've been waiting quite a while now for you to get on that train because it's worth it for sure, maybe it's time now for me to tell you...
Briefly: The song is sung in Italian, there is, of course a lyric video with english translation, and the lyrics are very deep and meaningful and poetic, but I'd like you to react to it without any translation, to see if we can prove your thesis right... But be warned, if you try this, you'll be in for quite another amazing journey and attract followers worldwide... - And, to make that clear: I'm an admirer of Angelina's art for sure, don't mean to offend anyone and hope @Ellis will continue to react to Angelina's performances as well, only here I thought that my idea of introducing him to Maneskin in this particular way, by means of this song might bring an interesting outcome since he could react to music, vocals, texture, composition alone and let's see how he digs the emotional content...
    Have a great day everyone!

Don't think it's necessary to give you any more information about Maneskin here, maybe you've heard of them (I discovered them quite recently, and they're quite young, so I couldn't have discovered them much earlier than two or three years ago, but here I am...), maybe you haven't, doesn't matter, anyway if you'll listen to this (and maybe 4 or 5 other songs) you'll never forget them again, I promise. After your first reaction there will be lots of guys in the comments telling you all about them and what to do next, so there's no need for me to do this here...

Ellis, I am not going to spend a lot of time on the positions that you hold as fundamental. Since we are finished with Autumn Leaves and EQs, I would just humbly suggest that you now listen to the words and possibly find benefit from doing so. My concern with your dismissal of lyrics is that you might really miss something special in, for example, Million Miles. The words are very crucial with that composition. Someone who speaks no English may love the chords, the EQs, how it has similarities to Mary Has A Little Lamb, or whatever. And I am thrilled for them. They may, however, lose an opportunity to hear how at least one person deals with the death of a loved one. Unless they have CC. Also, did you see how Ivan became one with the music? It’s fun to hear him describe this recording in his interview. Ellis, I will always listen and try to learn from you. Maybe you can learn some things too.

Ellis is a fascinating reactor in his lane..I’d love to watch him react to Pink floyyd or Led Zepp etc..Angelina’s lane is all about her voice, her message and the emotion behind it which Ellis’s format doesn’t include..He’s successful and I wish him continued success...take care ))
