I was a huge Mamas and Papas fan, but Angelina realized that this song was truly melancholy, and sad, unlike the upbeat louder original version. Missing L.A. while living far away, in a winter, dreary day. You can hear the longing in her voice. Once again Angela revitalizes an oldie, and makes it her own.
Her strenght is not only her singing but her storytelling... she arranged her own songs since age 6 if you watch "i put a spell on you" the choirmaster is smiling when he reads Angelinas directions ;)
Interesting and careful reaction, Ellis, thank you. No many 12 year old girls can take a classic song from over 55 years ago, which was a light ballad, for turn it into a slow one and melancholy song that fills you with emotions. The musical intelligence with which she reworks the old songs (and not just those), is simply amazing and her ability to exploit the accompaniment of only the simple guitar sound is incredible, I really believe that only this little girl with Donald Ducks on her shirt can do it so easily and harmoniously. I love the stripped versions of the classics songs she chooses ❤️ 😊
That was beautiful reaction and I love Angelina's take on California dreaming. She's just so mature, ahead of the curve at least in my opinion. Great response to the haters. Everyone stumbles with words or actions. No one's perfect. We could all be more like gentlemen and ladies, I'm certainly including myself. People living in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones. Peace ✌ allows growth seeds of righteousness are allowed to grow under peaceful conditions.
I think this song had a special meaning to her because back then she had just moved to LA California in order to pursue her dream of becoming a famous singer.
I love it when there’s only Angelina and a guitar she really doesn’t need anything else and the way she sings it in her own way she’s brilliant loved it 😍 Love from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴👼👸🏻👏👏👏👏🥰👍👋
What a bummer Ellis, I must have watched this performance at least 20+ times and never noticed that bloody pick. I love this performance and this guy is a great guitarist.
Your style, your approach, and your delivery are unique. Don’t change them, they are very compelling. Thanks for another insightful and entertaining analysis (“reaction” sounds too passive; it ignores what you bring to the table)! 👍
You have identified and explained better than anyone I’ve heard another aspect of Angelina’s genius- consistency and steering the ship within the lane she has chosen. All of her choices, including the choice of musicians, serve the song as a whole- the meaning of the lyrics, the feel of the music, etc.
I think you’re still relatively new to Angelina. You mentioned how her approach and phrasing fit well with the meaning behind the lyrics in California Dreamin. Actually, that’s one of Angelina’s greatest strengths. She is the best interpreter of lyrics I’ve ever heard. And that’s not a statement from someone who thinks every song of hers is the greatest… I grew up with the music of the 50’s and 60’s and have been an active music fan all my life. Her ability to live and breathe the essence of the song-it’s mood and meaning- is just extraordinary. And she does it right in your face with songs that you thought were sewn up by the original artists: Bohemian Rhapsody, Yellow Brick Road, A Million Years Ago, I’d Rather Go Blind, I Put a Spell on You, etc. And that musicality is so innate and natural. On this Mamas and Papas song, she sat down with Ivan and basically said: just follow me. And he did, beautifully. I loved the original so much because the sound was completely new and it captured my era. I love Angelina’s version because she re-interprets this classic legitimately in a way that is daring and unconventional, but makes it look effortless and natural. Actually, with Angelina, it is effortless and natural.
Respect your analysis & honesty, you are very concise on your choice of descriptive words, thanks for all your contrast & help me understand to how to enjoy excellent talent & appreciate her undeniable talent and artistry of her interpretations of compositions
I loved your reaction, and I LOVE to see that Angelina keeps growing on you by the day. It's just so incredibly exciting to see where she chooses to go from here. She's bound for greatness, I think we all can agree. And I love how you describe the flaws and deficiencies in some people's thought processes. Most of us can see them, but it's your way of describing them that really puts the nail in the coffin so to speak. I'm having a blast my friend, listening to you. Every time. Have a great week and take care. Love from Norway :-)
Find the interviews with the two guitar players that she used early on, Ivan here is one. They both speak of how little preparation they had before the these performances. Many times they along with Angelina didn't know what they were going to record when they arrived. They would go through a song maybe twice before recording. Besides her honey dripped tone, her musical knowledge is part of her blessing and genius. I'm looking forward to more of your Angelina reactions.
When she sings with this guitarist he says that they call him to spend the day with the family and they don't let him know what song they're going to cover until about an hour before they start "practicing". He said that they give him a hour to get the arrangement down then they start. He also said she usually nails it in one take.
Great. I love listen to you and see your perspective of the performances. I think you are always respective with the singers and musicians and you give us a professional opinion as a guitarist and musician in general. If you are interested in how Angelina made this sessions with Ivan Mendez in California when she was 12 years old and also with Egil Clausen in Norway you have to watch the interviews Alan Papier made to each one in his channel.
You know that I know that you are good at this. Don't worry about the haters - someday, they will be humans too. AJ sure is one fun young lady. There is nothing better than hearing her interpretation/presentation of a song.... and she has a great voice.
Do not worry abiut the haters, your opinion is your opinion and that is ok. There would be little point and no didcussion if everyone agreed about everything.
One of the things I like about your reviews is that you explain why so well, what is good and not so good about a performance and why. I don't appreciate a review that says "oh I give this an 8" because that doesn't mean anything. There is no substance. I love Angelina's voice and although I know nothing about music except to listen and enjoy -- I do appreciate an explanation of why it doesn't sound quite right to the ear and what I might be missing. Please keep up the good work. Anything thing that I think is important, to a person such as myself, I don't realize when something is difficult for a singer to perform well, just how it sounds to me. It gives an added dimension to music for me, and to be able to appreciate the actual skills involved. Thanks!
Dude.....Your reactions ROCk!!!!! You bring such a different perspective into the mix with what you pick up on during the performances and give us Angelina angels something else to hear and think about. The fact that Ivan does not know which song she wanted to sing until a few hours before they hit record is a testimate to his ability to accompany the way he does. A couple practices and we get this kind of emotional pairing of voice and a single guitar? In a single take? For the fun of it? How many professionals can pull that off? But.......maybe I'm just biased.
I know I'm late to the party, but thank you for your honest resction, which is clearly based on a high level of expertise and experience. Just wanted to point out: all of these duets she did with this particular guitarist, Ivan Mendez, were done in a room in a house with zero recording studio enhancements or equipment, were completely impromptu, were done after just one or two takes (no formal rehersal), often to songs neither of them was familiar with. In fact, in several of them you actually can see her reading the lyrics off a screen. That she can nonetheless stay on key, have such amazing breath control and phrasing, and pour such emotion into the songs are testament to her otherworldly talent.
Good breakdown, sh God Bless!e is a pro at rearranging making songs her own, even sometimes not even being familiar with rhe song, hence musical genius!
I bet if you were the worst cook in the world, I would still like your food. Dont you worry about a thing. Btw, you should be a teacher in a class for deep thinkers, or for up and coming musicians. I bet there would come some interesting musicians or people out of your classes.. Thanks again, I find joy in your reactions, Ellis 👍

I think your critique is mostly spot on Ellis, and of course that means you are good at what you do. I also think that when I hear Angelina's voice and a few other singers as well... I feel better. I don't need to critique because it is not my vocation. Does she make you feel a certain way at times that is upbuilding to your state of mind and character? If so , people may react better to your reactions better if you talk at least briefly about those feelings. Perhaps you would benefit and those listeners that only think about how she makes them feel would too. Have a great day sir.

This was never a happy song, it was a sad song mismatched with strangely happy music. Or it purposely fooled some people, like that stalker’s anthem from The Police, «Every Breath You Take». I love the classic version, but don’t blame Angelina for understanding the lyrics and putting it right.
