Awesome reaction as always. Interestingly, the red outfit that Rob Christie, the pianist was wearing was the same outfit that Elvis' band members wore in his 1968 comeback special where he also wore the same black leather jumper and played the same red guitar. What a rendition! Her Gandma Mery produced this. Looks like she used the same store she used for her My Funny Valentine video! Her sister Juliette was the older girl. The 2 younger girls are her Uncle Mike's kids, and, 2 time Grammy winner Rob Christie, studio director and head of Republic Records, on piano. What a great cover! The beehive hairstyle was to honor Priscilla Presley and the time period she met Elvis. I was not expecting this! Funny thing is, this was almost 4 minutes, but it flew by and felt short! Going to listen to it again! 16 years old….Wow!!! What a performance!

Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day.
Elvis' version is great and it always was, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own.
When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 82 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched.

Beehive hairdo a tribute to Pricilla Presley (not Amy Winehouse); Black leather suit and Red-faced guitar a tribute to Elvis in his 1968 Comeback Special. Rob Christie in "Red" a tribute to the same special where Elvis' musicians and backups wore red. Little girls in white---two cousins and her little sister Juliette who is about 10---representing the different stages of Angelina's "career".

  • @Bustefaen

Haha, the look in your eyes when Angelina shifted from Dsus4 to D was just like every guitarist in every concert crowd ever, thinking «I can do that too, and I can do it BETTER!». But she’s getting there, and I suspect she is in fact strumming those chords on the actual recording as well, on that very sexy Swedish Hagström guitar, just because she can. (Rob the magenta pianist (and LA studio manager) can actually go back and forth between the guitar and piano in the same song with a two second switch, as he proved in the live studio version of “7th Heaven”, but that is not what he won his two Grammies for.) She is probably not doing that dampened rhythm pattern though. Yet! And yes now I am rambling on, but 20 per cent of this may make sense to five readers, and if those percentages are not the same, that will be a 100 per cent success. Enjoyed your video!

So nice to see your thoughtful analysis of our young Barefoot Princess.
I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics.
Did you notice that right foot raise it''s heal to cradle the guitar a couple of times in the performance. I was waiting for her to throw in a little shake to it in homage to the King. Could that have been intentional?
That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins not nieces. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley.

My daddy used to say, "They can't all be gems son."
Most young artists fizzle out, Angelina will not. Her vocal abilities started off at a high level and have been on a steady upward trajectory since. You can confirm this by comparing different performances of the same song at different ages. A good example of this is "I have nothing" which she did at age 13 and again in concert in Norway Thursday at age 16. The difference is very noticeable in several ways. For one, at 13 her belting was strained, not the case any more, and belting is super important for commercial success, although it's not what I care about personally. It's not about doing different things, it's about doing the same thing better.

First and foremost, there is no other young female vocalist I know of that stands in one place, being accompanied by a single piano, guitar, cello, etc. and makes us feel it’s enough. This un cluttered and simple scenario gives us listeners the opportunity to completely focus on Angelina’s ever evolving vocal performance. Many young female performers have already hit their ceiling. Just when someone thinks that Angelina’s vocal capacity has peaked her next performance reminds them that she is a unique and special gem.

That is the guitar (or replica) of one Elvis used on his 1968 Comeback Special, the Hagstrom Viking II, that he borrowed from session player Al Casey, a wonderful player in his own right. It reportedly last sold at auction for $625k. Her black suite also is similar to his on that Special. Her hairstyle is reminiscent of Pricilla's late 60's style. The song was made famous by him in 69 after being a commercially unsuccessful for the original writer, Mark James. I liked Elvis' version for that time, which was mostly how James did it. But Angelina's bluesy version seems more fitting for the intent and meaning of the song. As usual, Angelina is true to the meaning of the song while still honoring the artist.

    • @DonaldLancon
      @DonaldLancon 2 роки тому +1

The guitar is a modern version of that model (currently going for around $1400 online). One way you can tell is the little metal piece (sorry, I don't know the proper term for it) just above the nut at the top of the neck. The angle at which that is set matches the modern version, and does not match the specific guitar that was auctioned (images of which are available at the auction house's website).

Well I'm 75 so I remember Elvis well. The beehive (Pricilla), the red pianist outfit (Elvis' "Reunion" band with James Burton on lead guitar), the guitar (same as Elvis').
The antique store is in her "My Funny Valentine" video, which showed the TikTok Angelina filming herself with a studio recording. What I did't expect were the 3 images
of an innocent (white) Angelina at recognizable stages. The 2 younger girls are cousins (Uncle Michael's kids) and Juliette her younger sister (looking so similar).
Her grandma, Mery, produced this, and I see her creativity and thinking.

I think most of the things you mentioned as a possible mish-mash were consistent. It’s a retro setting for a song that’s 50 years old. Angelina dusts off the old equipment. She gives a direct nod to Elvis with the guitar (being used sparingly), the black leather outfit is classic Elvis, the hairdo is a nod to Priscilla Presley’s, the red outfit of the pianist could easily be something worn by Elvis’s back up musicians.
The vibe is entirely Angelina: slowing down a classic song, making us understand and feel the meaning of the lyrics, and giving us beautiful vocals that are immediately recognizable as Angelina. She gives us new ways to love classic songs, clearly respecting the original, but giving them a vibe that is all her own.

You crack me up! I think you may be my favorite reviewer. On the subject of Angelina’s power, remember when she performed “What a Difference a Day Makes” which was right after she won Norway’s Got Talent, she had professional background singers which started the song, then when Angelina began to sing, her power in comparison to the background singers was incomprehensible, especially for a 8 year old, but you are right, she is even more powerful now than she was then, and her version of “My Funny Valentine” at 16 versus 10 really illustrates that development.

I went to the Elvis movie tonight and the movie is good! I won't tell too much about it to avoid spoiling it for people going to see it. After seeing the movie, I reckon the songs also is symbolic for the relation between Elvis and the Colonel with the Colonel trapping and deceiving Elvis.
The guitar is a Hagstrom. Rob Christie is pretty decent at the piano. Why are you sure that that piano is not being played? Are you hearing a full concert piano?
There is a lot of imagery from Elvis with the costumes, the guitar, and the Priscilla beehive (yeah Amy had one too, but Priscilla seems to be the obvious choice).
I agree that her art as a whole is developing. I also think her singing is improving. My Funny Valentine was a big jump in my ears and also her strong singing here was a step.
With her melancholic take on it, I feel that story changed. Elvis version was more upbeat giving it a sense of hope on a happy ending. With her that hope does not seem to be there and to me it comes of as resigned that things will not change and will come to end and to a sort of desperate plea towards the end.

I get it. You're visual- and sound oriented: structure of the video, picking up the chords, reharmonizing, etc. On that score your reactions are teaching experiences. But I don't agree that by Angelina's interpretations, she is doing what she always does, which is particularly not true in her interpretation of "Suspicious Minds." Elvis, to the delight of his fans which sent this to the top of the charts, completely hammed it up. It was a deliberate departure from Mark James' pleading to his wife. But Angelina is not just an interpreter of song with a gift of phrasing, she is a consumate story-teller. She told "Suspicious Minds" the way it was intended - and beautifully. I know you agree.

Hey Ellis, you could only see this coming if you had seen posters for the upcoming Elvis movie, or perhaps seen a video of the 1968 comeback special. Yes, Angelina is progressing, trying new things. The one thing that she carries across is her expression of emotion in her songs, the slowed down soulful renditions with minimal musical backing - her voice is front and centre. There are three concerts coming very soon in Norway - I hope that we will get to experience yet more new things or at least evolved versions of old favourites.

It’s lovely to see some originality in your reactions rather than the same stuff from everyone else. Thank you for sharing what is your perspective. I appreciate the honesty and search for a meaning for what you are observing and hearing as a professional musician who actually shows what is going on. Did you notice the crown depicted with the draping of the chair (that you recognized). I caught it when you mentioned TicTock. Great reaction and I did see a thumbnail of Sara James, so now I have to search for it because you know what you’re talking about. Keep doing what you do, if someone doesn’t like it they can watch the other sheepreactors. Much love and appreciation from California!❤️🌈🍀😇🙏🏻❣️

If you google a younger Priscilla Presley she’s wore her hair like that because Elvis liked her glamorized. Also, the guitar is the same Elvis used & the black leather of course is Elvis. Also, someone said the piano player has won 2 em miles📌

Could it be that Polish Sara is more like Daneliya Tuleshova. Used for 'My Funny Valentine'. From the '68 comeback concert beamed around the world. And I was mistaken before when I said Elvis' guitar was a Gibson ES335. I went to that concert and it is the same exact guitar. Elvis famously wore black leathers and I thought the hair was more a nod to a young Prescilla, but Amy Winehouse works too. Angelina wrote this version like the slow break in Elvis' version.
That first line hit something inside me and I felt this is where she changes from a kid singer to a woman singing. There was so much more packed in that first line for me I guess. O.K. this going to sound weird, but I felt the same way when Tiger Woods changed his swing to build it into something he had more control over. This was just after he won the Masters golf tournament by 12 strokes and also set the scoring record for the same tournament. People thought he was crazy but Tiger knew better. He spent the next 18 months struggling to get the control over his swing. He finally had managed to gain that control over 90% of his swing but his wedges eluded him, especially shots that required less than full shots. I was watching him play at a normal tour event on the second half of the round I watched him hit an 80 yard shot with a wedge he could hit 125 yards on a full shot. He hit it to 5' from the flag stick. I thought a 'conditional' o.k., then faced with a similar shot on the next hole I watched him hit that half to three quarter swing shot to 7' but pin high which is the goal of any shot to a green. I knew then that he had it, that last piece. I watched as he pulled his phone out of his bag and said to his teacher three words, "I got it"!! He then went on to have the best 10 year stretch of golf ever. This is where I feel Angelina has come to now. It will be pivitol.
That's what 3 younger girls represent, as they are all dressed in Angelina's trademark white princess dresses. The two smallest are her nieces and the older one is Angelina's 'love of her life' her sister Juliette. The last picture was Angelina dressed in her 'big girl', or her grown-up clothes. Signaling her cross-over into adulthood. What do you think? Am I nuts? O.K. yes is the answer there, but you know what I mean.
Some reactors are the Gold Standard already and everybody is chasing them, like you. I think you do great. On second thought maybe you should worry!!

Thanks for the guitar chords to validate that she knows the chords she playing. It has been noted that she does play the piano, guitar and even violin. To what level is in question. I don't doubt she can play. Main thing is she can SING! If she could play the piano half as good as Aretha Franklin, she could accompany herself. Great reaction, again.

Love your sincerity, man. That fear of sounding dumb is why I haven't put up my creations for the world yet. I'm trying to get them to a high enough quality so that I won't be flushed down the toilet my first shot. Anyway, great reaction of Angelina and I enjoyed your honest exploration of various considerations. We don't have to always agree but what's important is that we openly tell the truth about what we see and how we feel, so that others May help us understand more deeply or that so we can look back and see what patterns we had before on our path. Anyway it's really nice and refreshing to have someone be so honest and I really appreciate you man. Godspeed.

yes! dressed like Elvis! hair is Priscilla (since it's a song about relationship. That guitar belonged to Elvis, I've seen stated in various comments. The red outfit Rob Christie was wearing was from the band on the 1968 Elvis tour.

I agree with you mostly, but she has middle age and older fans, but she needs to reach younger crowd and to do that she has to have more Pop. This has more Pop than normal with some Contemporary and R&B to get that Emotion out, her Specialty. Great reaction, the out fit reminds me of Elvis 1968 Comeback Special with same Suit and Guitar and Looking like Prescilla, which is paying Homage to The King and shows she has Class, God Bless!

Why are the best always worried about not getting better? I am admittedly addicted to Angelina and you are one of very few reactors that I always listen to all the way through. You could get somewhat better by continuing to polish what you do but you sound like you want more better than that. So you need to try something different. My suggestion is that you comment on why you think Angelina is so effective, ignoring her voice. As an engineer I have some data and ideas, I am sure as a musician your ideas would be very different. It may require some research. I suggest that you get a copy of her book "Between Two Hearts " it is available digitally in English from her website. After digesting it it would be a fascinating reaction. There are two you tube videos from at least 4 year ago that explains the methods of the music school she attended in Norway from age 6 to 10 or so. You might find that interesting. If I trip over them I'll forward them to you. Remember "live with hope"
