The Dave Clark Five - You Got What It Takes

  • For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. They were the first British Invasion band to break in a big way in the States after the Beatles, though the Rolling Stones and others quickly supplanted the DC5 as the Fab Four's most serious rivals. The Dave Clark Five reached the Top 40 17 times between 1964 and 1967 with memorable hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Because," and a remake of Bobby Day's "Over and Over," as well as making more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show than any other English act. The DC5 were distinguished from their British contemporaries by their larger-than-life production, Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's leathery vocals. Though accused by detractors of lacking finesse and hipness, they had a solid ear for melodies and harmonies and wrote much of their early material, the best of which endured quite well. Interestingly, and unusually for that era, bandleader Dave Clark managed and produced the band himself, negotiating a much higher royalty rate than artists of that period usually received. After a couple years of superstardom, the group proved unable to either keep up with the changing times or maintain a high standard of original compositions, and called it quits in 1970. ~ Rick Clark & Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

@@brianferris8668 You need to take another look and listen. What you are looking at is a lip-synced version for a TV performance. Listen - what you are hearing is the original recording which was recorded with a full multiple horn section primarily of trumpets. It is a fabulous arrangement - of horns. It would be fairly amazing if their single sax player could provide all that trumpet sound.

      @bjbell52 Рік тому +1

@@brucetowell3432 then you haven't seen all of their performances. I watched a video of one of their first performances that was live. It didn't sound good because the engineer didn't mic the drums properly and they drowned out the rest of the band.
After that they resorted to recording a back up tape and would have live mics for vocals. One time they had a problem with the backing tape and they lost about 30 seconds until the tape was fixed. After that they lip synced.
As I said, their royal performances was done live and it was on UA-cam, try to find it.
As for your "...Maybe they used the English version of the wrecking crew??" - that's sound like the old BULLSH*T story that none of them could play their own instruments. Again, if you knew the history of the band then you would have known....
      1) They were voted around 1962-63 the best LIVE band in London.
      2) Denis Payton was not only their sax player but also harmonica, bass, electric, acoustic guitar player. It sounds like he didn't need a replacement studio musician.
      3) Their lead guitarist Lenny Davidson came to the group from a JAZZ band and I know from being a guitarist myself, jazz is much more difficult that R&R.
      4) Dave Clark DID use a sessions drummer named Bobby Graham. He admits that although he does point out the being the producer as well he preferred to be in the control booth. Here is what one producer said about his contributions to English R&R....
"...he played on an astounding 15000 songs, including “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” by the Animals, “Downtown” by Pet Clark, “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones, “Baby Please Don’t Go” by Van Morrison & Them, all the Dave Clark 5 hits, and the breakthrough Kinks hits “You Really Got Me”, “All Day & All Of The Night” ".
Oh and didn't a drummer who's name I don't remember (I think his last name was White) play drums on the Beatles' first records? Using your "logic" then NONE of the Beatles could play their instruments.
      5) Did I mention their keyboardist/lead singer Mike Smith. He came over from the same jazz group as Lenny. He was a child prodigy who was enrolled in a London musical college at the age of 13. After the group broke up, he was a symphony conductor, something Sir Paul CAN'T do! He and his partner Mike d'Abo were PERSONALLY asked to be part of the original recording of Evita.
So, like I said, try to find that royal performance if you want to see them live. I could mention that many groups lip synced time to time on TV including the Beatles.

@@bjbell52 Whoa, you took my post much , much way too harsh man..., I KNOW they could play, but I was just wondering basically out loud, why can't I ever see or hear a live performance...of COURSE all those rock bands lip synced on TV shows, including the Beatles. On Ed Sullivan though he insisted you play live and the Beatles and Stones did it. Never knew he was the drummer on 15K of recordings, though, well I'm a musician myself/of course jazz is the much more disciplined study. I'll have to look up if it's still on youtube their LIVE Royal performance. Really crazy though how that writer gave away his songwriting credits to Clark. Oh Alan White played on 2 recordings by the Beatles, I believe, "Ask me Why" and "Love me Do" although the version that you hear today is Ringo. Also didn't;t know they were voted best Live band in London during those years, heck during 62 and 63, the Beatles were still playing Hamburg!!! Yea, I've got about 8 or 9 45's that put out in between 1964 and 1969...really loved their rocking sound!! Just a bit too much echo, though for me, but "EPIC RECORDINGS were like that back then.....all my "EPIC" 45's sound like that. If you wanna hear the best version of "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" ....Bobby Darin did the best by far!!! Check it out!! hey thanks for all the info!!! I believe that's why we don't here alot bout them now. But they were a very talented group. An one could sing like Mike. THANKS. DC 5

Some years ago, I had the considerable blessing and privilege of meeting the late, great Marv Johnson, who did the original version of You Got What It Takes in 1960. I asked him what he thought about the Dave Clark Five's version of it. He was most generous in his praise for it. "I thought that horn arrangement was brilliant", he said. "I wish I'd done my own version like that". Fun Fact: The Dave Clark Five's You Got What It Takes LP on Epic is as good overall as is this single. Magnificent.

Mike Smith - was yes, the best lead singer of all the British bands. Christmas, 1970, in Vietnam Mike sent me a nice letter signed with his full name and also a signed photo. Plus, a "care package" some GREAT cookies from some bakery in England - which I shared with all my buddies. I just hated to see him died so early. He was a great guy and what a singer, organist, pianist and all-round entertainer. Also, my respects to the families of Dennis Payton (great tenor sax) and Rick Huxley (great guitarist) sorry that they aren't with us. I got to see them live three times - GREAT shows. Roger C. The Beatles took pop music to different levels as they evolved like no other band in the 60s. DC5 made more exciting, high energy, feel good music. It was almost like DC5 never left 1964. Thanks to Mike Smith (RIP) for unbelievable vocal ability that is so raw and unique (like John Lennon RIP, but possibly better).

Mike Smith was certainly among the very best, at the top. He had the perfect all around voice that could be tender on one song and GROWL on another. Not easy to do! If he wasn't in DAVE CLARK 5, he would have been snatched up by another band and would have been successful anywhere with a voice like that. Does anyone out there think that Paul McCartney looks alot like Mike Smith?

Back then, I was in a band called the Septones. While every other band was doing the Beatles, we were doing the DC5. We also dressed like them with white pants etc. Through a friend, I got 4 tickets, 5th row center for their concert in Carnegie Hall. I think it was on guitarist Lenny Davidson's birthday. While we were waiting for the show to start, we were having a cigarette in the back, (you could smoke in the hall then). When the show started we went running down the aisle to our seats, and people were grabbing at us because they thought we were them because we were wearing our band outfits. P.S. Am I the only one who thinks that Mike Smith looks A LOT like Paul McCartney.
