What a great sound they had. Smith's vocals are superb.
Here from a modern cover. Remember them from the day.
You are too young
Um . . . . Yeah! 👍
Just as I know every lyric of every Beatles' hit from '62-'66, I know every lyric to the DC5's hits! They were a GREAT band.
The cinematography quality is superb. This film is 57 years old and could have been made yesterday.

Wow...a lot of haters out there. The DC5 can’t possibly compare to the Beatles or many of the other British Invasion bands BUT these guys made great pop records that had a much tougher, aggressive sound than most of the other groups in the 60’s and no other group had such a huge sound in their early hits. And they sold an incredible amount of records. So, a little respect, please...
Stephanie Mack You described them, perfectly. A powerhouse of music, positivity, personality and so meticulously Handsome, also!
My problem is I never see them actually playing live. Were they really that great of musicians. Can't tell. Based on the footage I have seen they were not.
bengaljam, the stuff on UA-cam that I’ve seen of them live seems to indicate they were really good. They had a reputation as being a strong band in the clubs before they broke with “Glad All Over”.
@@bengaljam4550 none of groups. Play live. You cant look at instrement smile and. Sing you have two constent look at what your playen. When you see harder core someone like ERIC CLAPTON. Hes looken at guiter and not singen when he does solo playen. Beatles didnt play live cause screamin over them. And if group plays there instrement sound is more raw sound. The DAVE CLARK FIVE HAD TO DO LOT COMUNICATEN WITH AUDIENCE SO THEY REALLY CAN NOT LOOK DOWN PLAY AT SAME TIME. LOT PEOPLE DONT KNOW THAT.
@@guygrip4303 I can find many bands playing live especially bands from the 60's. Of course some TV shows pretty much required lip synching. Beatles live concerts are shown prominently. This video supposedly shows DC5 in concert but they are lip synching. Change my mind. Find me one instance on youtube where they are clearly playing live.
"Glad All Over" and "Bits and Pieces" were the two songs by this band I loved. 60's music is the best!
"You got what it takes" is my favorite DC5. Dave screwed up his ownership of their songs & deprived future generations of hearing their songs.
I also liked "Can't You See That She's Mine?" and I think "Because" rivalled "Cherish" by the Association
@@marvinchase4899 "Glad all over" booted Beatles "She Loves You" from top spot. It looked like they might keep up to the Fabs, but DC'S ghost writer wasn't nearly as prolific at putting out good material as John & Paul, & there are only so many old soul hits they could copy.
I like over and over

Mike Smith was the Best 🇬🇧 💖
He was very Lennon-esque in voice & looks which probably irked founder Clark! DC must have let's do our own Beatles hairstyle which looked a bit weird by piling it up on the top. Once the Beatles quit touring America adopted the DC5 & H.Hermits as Beatles-esque lookalikes. Best thing DC5 did was the Rock & Roll chart number in late 60s.
Yessir! Mike Smith was The man! And Dave Clark was overrated.
mike smith was not just the organist as announced, but also the lead singer.
the group should have been called the mike smith five.
Best comment bar none.
David Clark is an English musician, songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur. Clark was the leader, drummer and manager of the 1960s beat group the Dave Clark Five, the first British Invasion band to follow the Beatles to America in 1964. He kept them safe from bandit money managers. Without Dave Clark, there would have been no Dave Clark 5!
And the Spencer Davis Group should have been called the Stevie Winwood Group. Doesn't work that way.
Awesome thanks for the update on my way home

I saw DC5 live at the Westchester County Center, White Plains, NY in 1964. A regional group the Pacesetters opened for them and Cousin Brucie WABC introduced them. I can’t honestly tell you if they lip synched or not instead of playing live (as they were known to do) - the screams from the audience were deafening. They made some great records and I agree with all who say Mike Smith was an underrated vocalist. Great memory.
Wow, never knew they were at the County Center !
Having seen them live in Phila that same year I can tell you they were not lip syncing. At this concert it was the Kinks that opened for them and I got to see the original Supremes. Another classic band. The black music for that era is sorely missed. The rap crap made today can’t compare.

This is somehow so sweet and innocent compared to now.
Yes sir
I found Dave Clark a bit odd.
It's not innocent; it is how it was supposed to be.
Fans of Dave Clark have to ask themselves why we can see and hear hours of every other successful band of this era playing live except for his band. He has gone to great lengths to replace all live performance audio with their studio recordings. The DC5 stand virtually alone as a '60s band who never gave us a concert album or, years later, a reunion tour. Probably because it would have exposed Dave Clark as a musical fraud.
They were good live. ua-cam.com/video/imKauomnRag/v-deo.html
Read Clem Cattini's book
They didnt play on any of their records.
James Dunn , Georgia. Cringeworthy.
The reason is simple, they were crap...saw them in Blackpool in 1964, we couldn't believe how bad they were, left after 2 songs...should've left earlier...shouldn't have bothered going!...They weren't real, basically the phoniest rock band ever. (Except Mike Smith, great singer but should've been in a proper band).
@@davidsandz2186 Thanks for the first-hand report. I've always regretted that Mike Smith never hooked up with a band of really talented songwriters and musicians. We should have heard his distinctive voice throughout the '70s and '80s.
Maybe I'm seeing things, but damn mike Smith sure looks a hell of a lot like Paul McCartney.
I've been thinking the same thing!
Yes Mike does, but I'm sure someone will disagree. On a DC5 message board I once said that Mike Smith was a better keyboardist than Paul McCartney and some lady kept going after me, message after message, about how wrong I was. I even reminded her that Mike was sent to a musical college at the age of 13 and could read music and even conduct orchestras whereas Paul was self taught and couldn't read music or conduct orchestras. The funny thing about her "argument" was that she never mentioned keyboards. He talked about how Paul was a better songwriter, was in a better group, had a successful musical career after the Beatles, etc. but never mentioned keyboards.
And Dave Clark looks reminiscent to Davy Jones... both named Dave... crazy coincidence
mike smith really is dc5 bringing all that charisma charm and drive with his voice presence and playing but we also can't forget about the aggressive musical power brought by dave clarks drumming making the band standout as the Tottenham sound
Loved. Their music whilst doing my paper round ,vsinging to myself no phones then 1964ish 50 p per week , great days
Very well staged and an excellent excerpt of early 60's produced pop. 'Has the Phil Spector 'power' in the sound recording to which they're miming. They don't look 'nervous/new' to this kind of filmed performance but clearly it isn't live. Still good production and energy, 'though the crowd is surprisingly muted for the supposed 'mania' of the time. Perhaps the cameras took separate shots and cut them together out of sync to complete the atmosphere. Still not a patch on the Beatles live capabilities, honed over the 'ten thousand hours' of their Reeperbahn experiences. At the final bow (here in the video) the end is somewhat anti-climactic too.
they were a very good group. they deserve more recognition today.
no they dont!
64-'66, they ruled equally with the Beatles, before drug rock entered the scene

The Dave Clark Five were the greatest back then next to the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Elvis.
They dress clean cut better than todays rock groups.
Todays rock groups look like bums with tattoos, rings in their nose, ears. ripped holes in their jeans etc.
What happen to the clean cut look... down the toilet!
It’s easy to sound great when it’s lip synced .
@@Dougdenslowe714 I know people that saw them live and said they were very good. BTW - a number of groups lip synced.
Please don't forget to mention Roy Orbison in this time period. I think that he matched Elvis by his singer/songwriter ability, but that's only a matter of the American music and doesn't really have to do with the great British development in the Sixties, the greatest time for popular music after my humble opinion. Call it Rock'n'Roll, Beat or Rock. It was the best time for me and many like-minded dedicated followers of fashion, how the awesome Kinks used to sing.
So great , session musicians were called in to record the hits.
The British groups loved the fabulous Roy Orbison--one in a lifetime voice!
If you haven’t been ripped off, you haven’t been in the music business. Only in the DC5 it was Dave Clark doing the ripping....
I just love their energy and the fact that they're wearing Beatle boots! My mom used to have their album and I used to play it over and over again when I was little
Clever analogy. OVER & OVER was one of their hits!! 👍
They don't wear "Beatle Boots". The boots the DC5 wore were zippers with the Cuban heel. Paul wore zippers, John wore zippers, George wore zippers but Ringo wore the elastic band with lower heels. The others also wore them occasionally. ALL the British Invasion groups wore similar boots. The Beatles just happened to be one of them.
For those of you asking, it’s a combination of actual live footage and also filmed footage of the band miming to a track. They filmed stuff like the close-ups while the venue was empty, then shot some live footage with the audience present. The end result is a mixture of both types of film footage, mixed in with prerecorded studio tracks.
Actually I was wondering. Times it’s apparent that they’re syncing but times it looks live.
I agree , that show was so mimed and def nothing live about it. Great songs though , I still sing them today!
Because that was the way devil Dave Clark planned everything DC5
@@steppenwolf53 Dave sometimes would have Mike's and Lenny's microphone live to give them a sound that sounded live. One of their earliest performances on TV the went to a recording studio in New York City and cut a backing track that they could sing along to. There was another where they did play live and the drums sounded horrible (due to poor microphone placement). That might be why Clark started lip syncing their performances on TV.
You are absolutely correct. I have yet to find a "real" live performance of the group that is not lip-synced to one of their records. I know they did perform live venues but apparently Dave Clark saw to it that we don't get to see the real deal.
They had a pretty good overall sound. Some good pop songs. Vocalist a little like Lennon. But please don't compare these guys to the Fabs. Clark the drummer, was a heck of a mind when it came to money.

LOL!!!
For a short period of time the Dave Clark Five rivaled the popularity of the Beatles. They were going to be bigger than the Beatles! My understanding is that Mike Smith was the driving force musically, writing, arranging, lead vocals, organist, backing vocals and other instruments in the studio. Dave Clark was the manager, a shrewd businessman who kept control of the band and the rights to all the music (and still does). It is hard to find DC5 music. I found a copy of a Russian produced CD a number of years ago, which has every song they ever recorded. It is one of my prized possessions!
Who told you Mike Smith really wrote their songs? Dave Clark scammed the actual song writer.
Tenho 3 vinis do Dave Clark, além de 2 cds the best. A cópia do cd russo seria sem sombra de dúvidas , o duplo com 50 músicas , que inclusive, foi lançado por uma gravadora inglesa
Yet Dave Clark had Bobby Graham play the drums on the recordings.
I read that Dave Clark paid his band members studio musicians wages.
@@janicekociol7702 Mike Smith and Lenny wrote many of their songs. Ron Ryan wrote their earlier hits but stopped writing when Clark screwed him out of the royalties. And yes, after Ron left, I don't think they ever had a self-penned song in the top 10.

DCV fan here, but, there's nothing "concert" about this. Seems like a promo video. All lip synching. I never heard anything by them "live", including Ed Sullivan, where most performers were live.
In an interview I read some years ago, with Paul McCartney, he stated that the only band around that time (1963-65) that they had any real concern about knocking them (The Beatles) out of the Top 10 chart position, was the Dave Clark 5. Back then, The Beatles, as with all the other “British Invasion” bands, had just one goal - to make as many commercial radio hits as possible, that would reach as high and remain as long in the top 10 on the charts, as possible. Even though The Beatles were the “perfect storm” of creative talent coming together as a group, which certainly eventually made them stand head and shoulders above the others, and musically define the 1960’s, back in those early 1960’s years The Dave Clark definitely gave The Beatles a run for their money, and legitimate cause for losing chart domination concern, as attested to by the number of chart topping hits the DC5 had during 1963-65: Beatles-16; Dave Clark Five-12; (Rolling Stones only 6). The DC5 didn’t evolve and grow musically, as the The Beatles and Stones did, but for what the DC5 produced and how frequently they charted during the early 1960’s, they were definitely a powerhouse group that recorded a lot of great catchy and danceable music, in sort of a Garage Band style of the time. I played in a Rock dance band from 1963-‘66, mostly in teenage nightclubs and other teen venues, and requests for DC5 songs were always in top demand by the attendees.
That's my opinion too.

Really enjoyed these very talented young men. Sharply attired, complete musicians and always gave a great show.
At this time in history, not a time ti compare, but a time to fully engage and enjoy. We're all young only once for too short a time.
As a 74 year old picker who played many of the DC5 tunes over the years I have never found a video of them actually playing live, it's always miming to prerecorded track's...
Well, the way that they got their famous massive sound on record was through double-tracking everything from the drums to the vocals. There was no technology to do that stuff in live then, other than miming to a record, or if you had made the record with live performance in mind perhaps playing a backing track and singing over it.
If you listen carefully to things like the intro to "Glad all Over" you can clearly hear two drummers - resulting from double tracking - Clark refused to use an actual second drummer. It's also the reason why when you listen to their earlier stuff (before multi-track studios came in) some of the backing elements sound a little more muzzy than others. They laid down a track and then played it on one tape deck while playing along with it and recording the result on another deck. Sometimes 2-3 times I think. Listen to "You Got What It Takes" (for one example) and knowing how it was done you can hear the different sound quality of the different elements.
@@alanmusicman3385 I already mentioned a live performance on UA-cam of their command performance for the queen. I know there use to be a live performance on UA-cam of them doing Glad All Over and the drums sounded really bad. There might be a Shindig episode when they might have song live. At the end of the episode all the different performers would sing one verse of a song. I don't think the DC5 would lip sync while all the rest didn't.
Used a lot of reverb, too!
No live audio!! What the hell was Dave Clark so paranoid about. He ruined their legacy with his total control!! Tons of Beatles..Stones and Animals live songs from that era.. I will never understand what he was hiding... Control freak! Mike Smith made this band.. Not Dave Clark..
Too bad they were led by a Svengali who conned them into a bad financial deal . Should Mr Clark today take offense, perhaps a breakdown of moneys distributed to fellow band members over the period of the first hit till the last one.
Only a cynic could dislike the Dave Clark Five. After all, here was a band that played upbeat, infectious pop, and who could possibly not fall for “Because,” one of the best, most Brian Wilson-worthy love songs ever written.
This was great to see. Thank you.
Yes they were good. I saw them live in Ft Lauderdale. But Dave Clark allegedly took songs from Ron Ryan and credited them to himself without fair payment. See interview with Ron Ryan on the web
Dave Clark was a control freak in every aspect of the band. It was as if all the members worked for him!
They did work for him. He hired them as employees and financed the band paying them a weekly salary. He was a businessman who leased the songs to the record companies for five years after which the rights reverted to him He told the Beatles and stones and others that the record companies were ripping them off but nobody listened His business acumen served him well as an executive with Amazon as well as other companies.A very average musician who recruited the band and understood the business side. None of the other members badmouthed him over the arrangement. What was mystifying is Mike never really pursued a career in music although he had some collaborations with other musicians
Unfortunately it was the custom then for the record companies to not risk live performances lest they deviate from the studio recordings and damage record sales in any form. Consistency was paramount. Hence we get lots of these shows. Watch Ed Sullivan or Midnight Special to see the real deal.
When I saw the Beatles in Indianapolis in 1964 the crowd was going nuts and passing out to be carried out. Amazing It change my life and music carrier. (This event is on u tube) TD Atlanta

It was a Session Drummer called Bobby Graham that played on there Records. He was told to keep it simple So Dave could do it Live.
After every DC5 video the same comments appear about how they never played live, how Dave Clark never played drums or co-wrote any of their songs and how he ripped off the rest of the guys in the group. They started off as the house band for Mecca at the Tottenham Royal Ballroom and touring around American bases, neither of which they could have done if they had had no musical talent. Dave Clark has always admitted that he was no more than a very average drummer, no member ever left the group and I have never seen any article written by the other members complaining about Dave Clark, so why the hate?
The claim I hear the most often is that Bobby Graham did a great deal of the drumming on the DC5 records.
As for the song writing, have you even noticed that they didn't have any self penned hits after 1965? That's because Clark had a ghost writer named Ron Ryan. His brother Mick was the original guitarist for the DC5. Clark promised to split the royalties 50/50 with Ron but when the money started rolling in, Clark didn't live up to the agreement. Ron eventually got some money but not the 50/50 split he was promised. I think that's when he quit writing for the group.
The sax guy is not playing it.
The Beatles generic lol !
Great Band! Great Sound!
I'm feeling "Glad All Over" listening to this....***
*** Did anyone see what I did there? The Stage beckons...
They found the beatles song writing formula with bits and pieces and Glad all over
The formula from “She Loves You”. In the meantime The Beatles had moved on to a different sound
on their next record.
@ Zac Dior~I loved this, sent me and my sister and our cousin mad, jumping around waving our arms, delighted with ourselves.
I didn't like the Beatles.
"Live". Not. That's the 45RPM single. You can't find any film or video of the playing live anywhere. They couldn't. Must have sucked in reality.
Ha ha. I'm just now learning and seeing this after decades of assuming that they were able to play live on stage. Hilarious. Another fabricated band along with mimes performances. Imagine the surprise at the time of going to see/hear them live only to witness them backed by a recording.
When he kiss the girl with the glass between, he is anticipating 2020...
Why compare them to anyone, just enjoy their music or dont listen....simple..
l was 10 yrs old and loved all this music . Happy days the '60's . Anyone got a time machine l could borrow ?
Me too, 10 yrs old at 1964 .
At the begining they was the first competition for The Beatles, not The Stones...
I Love Oldie Songs...Thanks for sharing...
Is Dave Clark wearing a wig? Serious question, it looks phony as hell.
I prefer DC5 over the Beatles. There, I said it, so sue me!
It isn't a "concert" if the performers are miming! And where are the "screaming teenagers"? Pathetic.
This is the record the band would not sound like that live.
Yep. Almost impossible to find an actual live recording.
