I went the bare ammo way and have recently gone back to the boxes. Smaller 50ct boxes (norma, magtech, fiochi) give me easily 1k per 50cal can with a couple 100+ more. Reason for switching back was after taking a coupe ranges classes and getting miss fires I had no freaking way to know which ones they were. So back to the boxes so I can identify them. And don’t forget the silica packs!
Great point. I have the majority of my ammo stored loosely but came across a post somewhere stating there were recalls on some Sig ammo. When I read that, I thought to myself how would I know which ammo is actually recalled if I store all mine loosely so I started going back to storing in boxes as well. But, I also store ammo in multiple mags so I am kind of in the same boat there as well.
Because we don’t have to do it ourselves to get the information. We can also do our own videos of different calibers and report the variables. While the round count will vary by caliber, I presume the weights will be similar.. I’m curious of the round count and weight of 22lr packed this way myself. Thank you, Andrew
I store my 9mm, .223 and 5.56mm just like this with a few moisture absorbing packets. I have for years with no problems. I have a 34 gun safe just for Ammo, Magazines and Accessories.
I store my 9mm in a 50cal can. 2000 per can, 200 per quart ziplock bag, then all 10 bags in another 2.5 gallon bag that fits nice in the 50cal can. Triple sealed ammo when done.
I got a couple of those big 50 cal cans maybe 20 years ago. Repainted and banged out the dings. I use then by just putting the cardboard boxes in. Other ammo I use smaller plastic cans. While cleaning out dad's basement years ago, I found a bunch of smaller 30 cal cans. So yeah, those too... I much prefer the smaller plastic cans to the used huge military metal recycles. Especially the Zombie cans. I use two of those for my collection of .22 LR.
Yep. That's what I learn a few years ago so for me I switched to 30 cal cans. Metal cans. For 9mm I can loosely fit about 1200 to maybe 1300 but I always settle at 1000 rounds in a 30 cal can.
Interesting, i figured out i could store about 1300 rounds in one. its pretty funny that others have also come to this conclusion. I have a can full of blazer 9mm and it is all loose. side rant, why does blazer use such stupidly large boxes? like what is the point?
You should get a couple of those plastic cases used for reloads. That way you can keep track of how many you have shot plus you don’t need to haul 60 lbs when you go to the range. I like keeping track of what I am shooting just in case I get a bad batch. I recently got a box of Fiocchi that were not sized correctly and jammed my wife’s carry. I took pictures and contacted Fiocchi and they sent me 150 rounds of replacements.
It’s just so much more satisfying to get sweet deals on bulk ammo and buy enough for practicing for the next 6 months. It drives you to practice more and saves a ton of cash.
Andrew, I began stocking my .45ACP in surplus 50 cal cans four years ago, soon after that 9mm. Now all my ammo is in cans, I even have range cans full of charged mags for whatever I will be shooting. BTW, if you think that 9 is heavy--I have a loaded-to-the-limit .45 can and I am getting too old to lift it. LOL. Now I have a fairly good idea how much 9mm I have. Never enough!
I use the 30 caliber plastic ones for my loose ammo and it fits around 1100-1200 rounds per box. I figured it was just over 30 lbs although I have never weighed it. I have the larger 50 caliber plastic ones but the ammo is in the original boxes. I need to rotate my ammo as some was bought early in the pandemic and is 2.5 years old. My main calibers for shooting at the range are .380 (14.5K) and 9mm (21k) and 22 cal. (26-27K). It may sound like a lot but I go through about 800-1000 rounds centerfire and 2000 rounds 22 cal. each month.
Very helpful video. I have cans of ammo in bulk like this, but they are too heavy for me to be carrying around to the range. So I scoop out what I think I need into smaller plastic boxes and such for range use. i put masking tape on the end and top of the boxes and then write with a wide tip marker what is in each box so I don't have to handle them unnecessarily. Because they can get VERY HEAVY!

I’ve got mine in ammo cans but I took the wife’s vapor seal machine and vapor sealed 50-100rd bags with the batch and ID tag from the cardboard boxes and sealed them up with the desiccant bags then put them in ammo boxes. Also labeled the ammo cans with the amount and ammo type. Only ammo I didn’t seal in vapor bags was shot gun rounds it took to much of the vapor seal and the wife got mad so there just in marked ammo cans. She even got me some plastic ammo cans for range day because she couldn’t pick up the steel ammo cans. I have one ammo can full of .22LR that weighs 68lbs and I use a hand truck to move it and all of it’s in sealed vapor bags each labeled. Took awhile to accomplish this but I’m retired and it gave me something to do and the ammo should be protected for a long time if I can’t shoot it all.
all depends on your storage plan. I use the 30 cal cans as they are easier to carry. I can also easily fit 1500 round of 9mm in this size can. Being older (73) the 50 cal can like you have I would not be able to carry. I like these cans for long term storage. The take up less space than boxed ammo

I always leave it in the boxes in the can. Way easier to carry, I know the lot numbers, can mix brands and types, and easy to grab boxes for the range. With boxes I just use more cans, but it’s a lot easier to work with them. But I can see the appeal here if it’s all the same brand and bullet weight, you’re not going to be into it or moving the now far too heavy cans regularly for range ammo, and the goal is strictly long term storage for a decade or more. In that case I’d probably line the can with a plastic bag first then seal it up.
I bought Craftsman brand tool bags for my ammo. I feel each bag to 30lbs. Most anyone can carry 30lbs and they are easy to carry with heavy duty carry straps or a shoulder strap. Shit gets squirrely and you have to grab and go, that's definitely a good way to be staged..
I will tell you how much I got into my ammo can even before watching this video. I got 2,493 rounds in it. It is heavy as crap and the sides are starting to bulge out.
Hence the problem. I only use smaller 30 cal ammo cans for ammo storage since if I have to quickly move all my ammo onto my truck, I need containers that are light enough for my wife to carry or it’ll slow things down. Smaller containers are also easier in packing into small spaces or when distributing basic loads to people in a group.

I never keep lose ammo in my metal cans - original boxes only. My OCD is horrible, so I only keep a thousand rounds in each can (ammo is heavy) with a label showing name, date purchased, date rotation, and desiccant packs.
60 pounds! That's why I like the .30 cal cans - I can actually carry one of those full of ammo. Thanks for the info on how much loose ammo the can can hold!
Just saw this. Yeppers, always good to have, and then get more. But I'm relocating all my cans this month, and the weight is hurting my old hurting joints!
Use 30 cal ammo cans for 9 mm, much more manageable. I bag mine 100 rounds per heavy duty Ziploc bag, can just fit a thousand rounds in. If you pack it loose which I don't recommend a thousand rounds will fit easily. Don't forget a couple of moisture absorber packs.
Lol 👍🏻👍🏻 you can fit about 1500 .45 2000 9mm. 1000 556. 1000 x39. Don’t remember 308 pretty sure it says 750 on it. And .22 is like 6000 lol. All gives 1” or so to close easy. Add 1-2 silica packs for long term. And a 20mm can, takes 3 cases of 12ga individualized boxes. A 20mm will also fit 4x 8lb jugs of powder nice and square with room on top for 4-5 singles.
I bought a crap load of those Herters during the pandemic and ammo shortage. Those are ammo are the worst 15,000 round purchase I've ever made. Super dirty and at least 2-3 FTF in each box. So glad I'm down to my last 400 rounds.
I didn't empty my boxes. I have 3 X 550 count, and 3 X 333 count. Total 2648 + 2 for 2650 TOTAL. Another can holds 3 X 500, and 3 X 500 rnds. Total 2500. All in boxes, 550, 525, 500 and some 333 count. Emptying boxes doesn't really increase capacity like I thought it would. But, in boxes or not, they are heavy!!! I prefer to keep the boxes. They protect each round from skin oil.
Something in my brain just gets tickled right when I see a bunch of shiny brass in a container (Ive gotten permission to clean up my SGL Range, and have a Ammo Can full of empty brass, and a larger can full of scrap metal casings)
I can see this might be useful if you have a lot of ammo to store, and want to minimize space or the number of cans to buy However, I prefer to keep it boxed, or loaded in mags. Well both actually. Remember, if you know how much ammo you have, you don’t have enough.
I already knew the answer to that because I have four cans filled with 2,100 rounds each , except I keep them stored in zipped sandwich bags of 50 rounds each and the flap/label from the box is inside so I know what it is
Put in some silica dessicants and some dry sponges so it doesn't jiggle around. If you want to lower the contents, you could cut out some styrofoam. Just make sure you have fingerholds on it so you can take it out without destroying it.
You need one of the mini cans that laxammo ships in, I got two when I bought 1000 rounds of 9mm loose pack in them, I got 2 more when I bought 200 rounds. 30-06
@@andrewmconrad @Andrew Conrad they are the perfect little can for a range day, they are plastic with a rubber gasket but pretty durable and loaded to the brim the weight is hefty but not burdensome. Also they often got the best deal on new ammo, haven't tried their reman but I've never had a bad round of their new ammo, also their .30-06 garand loads was loaded in starline brass, perfect for reloading.
I am not a fan of loose ammo storage, this ideology was demonstrated by Norma .308 recall this year. With about 4k-5k round and about 1200 rounds are being recall base on certain lot. If I had dump the ammo there is no way of telling which round belong to effected lot. Alternatively you can buy 9mm from Europe manufacture (S&B, Magtech, Fiocchi, Norma) to save packaging space. Sellier and Bellot 9 mm is the smallest package i ever seen. 1000 round box is small as if not smaller than Herter's, Winchester, Federal, Blazer 250 round package. With S&B I can fit 2k round in a 50 cal can and 2600 rounds in a fat 50 Cal can. I also picked up 3 ammo cans from Bass Pro last week as well. $10 for a metal can with sturdy lid is a no brainer.
I too am tired of the 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP boxes and was thinking of switching to ammo cans; but, at 60 pounds per can, I think I'll stick with the boxes of 50 rounds each. Now, having said that, I think it would be cool if they made 200 round ammo cans. I would buy those.
I know 2a warehouse sells their 200 round packs in smaller ammo cans and then mtm (maybe?) make those systems that have 3 medium sized cans or 4 smaller cans.
👍👍.....put some oxygen / moisture packs in there especially down in your neck of the woods I got a crap load of them off Amazon for cheap I'd at least put three in there and mix them in
@@andrewmconrad about that much loose, just a little bit room left at the top in the cans that come with the 420 count for around 299$ to 325$ on stripper clips, if you break'em down you can get about 1200 loosely into the can

Who knows when ammo prices are gonna spike I should start saving myself but every time I go to the range, I blow it all. We gotta a great company here in CT where I'm from called Target Sports USA and they sell ammo for the cheapest I can find around here Cabela’s is around $16 at the range I go to it's $18 from the same box at Target Sport USA it's around $12.95.
Target sports is great and cheap BUT for ammo up to 1000 rounds, its the same price to buy locally. Now if i need like 1100+ rounds then its cheaper to buy from Target Sports and ship them in but i don't buy that much ammo at any given time so i buy it all locally. My 9mm is $55 for 250 rounds which is 24 cents each My 22LR is $10 for 100 rounds
30 cal cans are way better for loose ammo storage. I did exactly that with Herters 9mm and then the bastards announced a recall. Now I have two 30 cal cans full of questionable 9mm.
lol I love seeing ammo, it's like treasure ! Personally I have been using the plastic mini ammo cans from Cabela's, they hold about 500 or so 9mm, way easier to carry for a range day. Thank you sir for the ammo porn haha.
How many 22lr rounds will fit in my 20mm can? Jk turned it into a 72 hour vehicle cache. As a chef it's pretty standard 1 460 smith and Wesson with 50 rounds the rest of the can is filled with looses cigarettes, monster energy drinks, mango white claw, and canned tamales.

and so on.
Have a nice day.
Place a couple of silica gel packs you get from beef jerky or vitamins bottle in the .50cal box. I place my ammo in a waxed canvas bag.
The packets in food are oxygen absorbers not moisture like silica.
@@watermann8200 oh ok. Thought they were the same. Guess my ammo is air free than.
Each can came with a silica pack and O had a few extras. I put them in there after I finished filming 😁
I never keep lose ammo in my metal cans - original boxes only. My OCD is horrible, so I only keep a thousand rounds in each can (ammo is heavy) with a label showing name, date purchased, date rotation, and desiccant packs.
Holy crap, they make meds for that
@@matthewhartup941 Yep, it’s called buying more AMMO!
60 pounds! That's why I like the .30 cal cans - I can actually carry one of those full of ammo.
Thanks for the info on how much loose ammo the can can hold!
Thanks Andrew...This video was oddly satisfying 😂
Very satisfying 😂
Just saw this. Yeppers, always good to have, and then get more. But I'm relocating all my cans this month, and the weight is hurting my old hurting joints!
Thanks for the video Andrew!!!
You bet!
I’ve got an old .50 cal ammo can that’s the same size as yours and got the same results. 👍🏻
😂 I was thinking you wanted us to guess how many a give it away. Darn I wouldn’t have guessed 2100 rounds. Thanks for the video.
🤣 2100 rounds plus shipping would be a helluva giveaway!
Almost as good as the one in Afghanistan 😁
Great tutorial.
I just bought two ammo cans. I was wondering how many 9mm rds one can would hold. 2100 rds. 👍🏼
Lol 👍🏻👍🏻 you can fit about
1500 .45 2000 9mm. 1000 556.
Same here, but I haven't had any issues with it really. Sorry to hear that
I didn't empty my boxes.
Why am I so jealous lmao I want that ammo and the ammo can too!
Very satisfying 😂
That's the way I do it ,and grab four or five hand fulls and throw in my range bag when I go
👊🏻 I brought the whole thing... for now 🤣 it's heavy!!
this is EXACTLY how I filled my 9mm can, same ammo too XD
Something in my brain just gets tickled right when I see a bunch of shiny brass in a container (Ive gotten permission to clean up my SGL Range, and have a Ammo Can full of empty brass, and a larger can full of scrap metal casings)
I can see this might be useful if you have a lot of ammo to store, and want to minimize space or the number of cans to buy
However, I prefer to keep it boxed, or loaded in mags.
You need one of the mini cans that
laxammo ships in, I got two when I bought 1000 rounds of 9mm loose pack in them, I got 2 more when I bought 200 rounds. 30-06
On my radar!
Good to know. Yeah, magtech and S&B do have small packaging. Good thinking
👍👍.....put some oxygen / moisture packs in there especially down in your neck of the woods I got a crap load of them off Amazon for cheap I'd at least put three in there and mix them in
Yes, I put the moisture absorbers in the can after I was done filming
How many tins of 7.62x39 are head stamped from the’80s and it runs pretty reliably.
What bullet weight did you have? If you loaded 115 grain aluminum case, total weight would be significantly lower.
Winchester and Herter's recently recalled 9mm ammunition.
I got about 1200 green tips into one can, I have two cans about half full with 1000 in each one, one is 9m and the other is 40s&w
1200 eh? Loose?
@@andrewmconrad about that much loose, just a little bit room left at the top in the cans that come with the 420 count for around 299$ to 325$ on stripper clips, if you break'em down you can get about 1200 loosely into the can
Andrew , You Should Add a 9MM Bottom 50 Rd. Tray in Top Ammo Can a Keep Count has and Round Count , When you do Range Day. I have a Log Book on Both S&W 9MM Compact and Springfield Armory 1911A1 Mil-Spec... Brand , Bullet Gr. Vel. , Keep Adding Up Round
Count and Keep Tabs on What I purchase in Pistol Ammo . I Call It Cook-Off-Log-Book.
It's works .. Trying too Remember Doesn't Work after a While .. !
I like that method. I'll get a little notebook too. Thanks!
Good info to have.
I could look it up or just weigh some ammo, so how much does that much ammo weigh?
Looks so nice with all them in that ammo can 👌👌👌👌👌
gonna be heavy as hell
This is the beauty of 5.7 mm. Not only is it 30% lighter than 9 mm, but you can fit 1200 rounds of boxed ammunition in a single 30 caliber ammo can.
It's only 3 times more expensive and next to impossible to find.
Doing the important work that others won't.
That’s a lot of freedom seeds.
I use the 30cal Metal ammo cans they will not hold as much but will be a lot lighter to when you haft to Bug Out !!!!
I fit 2300 in one 50 cal can with a few desiccant packs. Good to go🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Who knows when ammo prices are gonna spike I should start saving myself but every time I go to the range, I blow it all.
My 9mm is $55 for 250 rounds which is 24 cents each
My 22LR is $10 for 100 rounds
I started to put my 9mm in a can that size, but I ended up using a 30 Cal can. Way less weight.
Yup all loose ammo goes into a 30 cal can for me!
I swapped to 30 cal cans because of the weight. Not sure about 9mm but I can fit 700 rounds of loose 556 in a 30 cal can.
Good information...now I know how much 9mm ammo I can put in one..
👊🏻
30 cal cans are way better for loose ammo storage.
I did exactly that with Herters 9mm and then the bastards announced a recall.
Now I have two 30 cal cans full of questionable 9mm.
That's a bummer. The thought definitely crossed my mind
lol I love seeing ammo, it's like treasure !
Personally I have been using the plastic mini ammo cans from Cabela's, they hold about 500 or so 9mm, way easier to carry for a range day.
Thank you sir for the ammo porn haha.
well this is a good idea i might do the same but seperate with baggies because i dont have 2100 of the same brand
That's a good idea for mixing, but make sure they're not completely sealed, but if so, use a moisture absorber
I got a few from bass pro too
average can 2000 rounds
If you are going to store it long term might want to add a silica packet to take care of any moisture.
Yup, I put them in after the video 👍🏻
1500 rds in standard 30 cal can beautiful sight watching you dumb them in
Don’t know about recalls since Cash is king, no paper trail. 😁
Still wondering how much more would've fit in there
nice load of ammo
Mag tech also fits 1600 still in boxes
Idk I guess I’m extra autistic I love my ammo to stay in original packaging so when you popped open the can the first time it felt right there lol 😂
I'm ocd as well, that's why it was all herters 115gr
Weight is more than I imagined
How many 22lr rounds will fit in my 20mm can? Jk turned it into a 72 hour vehicle cache. As a chef it's pretty standard 1 460 smith and Wesson with 50 rounds the rest of the can is filled with looses cigarettes, monster energy drinks, mango white claw, and canned tamales.
You could have gotten 1800 in the can still in the boxes..
Hope for you Herters improved its quality.
Tis like visual ASMR 😅
I store my ammo in the original boxes which I pack in 50cal boxes. If you dump ammo in a 50cal box loose, it will be way too heavy to carry around. Keep Prepping my friends.
Science, bro. 👍
Been there done that ,,all reloads
I certainly like the metal ammo cans rather than plastic. However, 60lbs is not really practical if you have reason to move them. Cheers!
That’s why I use 30 cal cans. Just easier to get around with.
You do need it . it flys literally
you put silica gel in there ???
Yep, just not in the video 👍🏻
Why I put a post under my house below my ammo cabinet.
Florida. No basements, solid concrete foundation 😁😁
Refreshing
Indeed 😁
Hahaha. I have 1 can with 230gr 45 in it. 1000 rds weighs that much and there's still room in the can for more.
Yep i reloaded 1100 or so about filled the can
Nice 😁😁
Great video
Mtm case-gard
God I love freedom!
I started keeping my loose ammo in 3 gallon buckets
