I always thought 500 rounds per rifle and 200 rounds per pistol is the minimum for preppers and minutemen. 1000 per rifle and 500 is a damn good number. But at the end of the day you can never have “too much” ammo. You can have “enough”, but not “too much”.

Recently!? They must be rolling in ammo if so. My brother is big in class 3 weapons, and back when times were saner, yeah we would go through ammo. Not now.
Back in the day a range trip would be 300+or- 5.56 about 100 in what ever hand gun I had and 300 to 500 22LRs that was about 1 time a mouth but now 100 or so 22LRs about every other mouth
I worked in the gun industry for years. This was a common question. I told the customer a good rule of thumb is, what ever you spend on the firearm is how much you should spend on ammo. You don't have to buy it at one time, but that should be your goal.
USMC 0311 with two combat tours in Iraq. Standard loadout is 7 mags, 210 rounds for rifle and 2 spare mags to match the one in the m9 for a total of 3 mags and 45 rounds. FYI
I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I saw this coming, and I didn't ever want to get caught unprepared like I was in 2013. Luckily ammo came back after 2013, and I have always made sure to have a little held back for when it happened again. I would be freaking out if I didn't have at least a couple thousand rounds of my main calibers. I am mad at myself for not having at least a thousand 357 Mag. I have about 600 and that isn't enough for a caliber that I like so much. I am afraid that ammo is never coming back like it was, if at all. This time there is just so much against us. I don't think we'll ever see $.25/ .223 and $.16/9mm again. With the way globalist are stacking the deck, they'll be coming for what we already have.
Cajun: Sorry to say you're right, friend ! The "good ol' days" of cheap, readily available ammo are LONG GONE. Even if Biden and his cronies DON'T get their way with "gun control", the continued panic buying and scarfing up of supplies by resellers wil insure prices stay HIGH, and availability LOW.
Hey Cajun you are spot on. I have a bunch of ammo i bought back in the 2014 time frame. People thought i was crazy and now they want in. This is not MLM trading. Good luck is what i think. The thing now is reloading supplies. Look at estate sales and go to where the shooters are out in the BLM areas target practicing. Melt that brass and lead. Buy the powder. The rest of you that think this is not happening. Good luck!
A combat load out x3. Plus some for training. Put all the ammo in magazines for the rifle if possible. You are not going to survive many firefights. Handguns 200. Shotguns 100. Good luck. You get hit during shtf your probably a deadman. The problem is SHTF can be anything. If your first getting tooled up now, your skill level is probably low. Keep it simple. Avoid confrontation. Fmj is fine for shtf.
James Geis That’s about what we each carried going into Bosnia with the 26th MEU in 1998 with much more on the 5 Tons. 6- 30 round magazines. 180 rounds each Marine.
When I used to hunt, after sighting in my gun, I’d never get through a box of ammunition. It was always one shot one kill, even from the hip. But then I am of aboriginal descent so I know instinctively where the prey is and I can’t even remember aiming. Always straight to the shoulder on fire. However, my pale skin brothers might need more. For me 200 rounds is WTF time.
When you are shooting, the bullets are gonna fly both ways. If you plan on shooting thousands of bullets, dont expect to survive it. Avoid combat at all costs. Do you really expect to kill hundreds of people with your thousands of rounds? You expect to outwit and outmaneuver that many people? Huh.
Simple answer: the 'absolute' bare minimum is whatever amount YOU can reasonably carry on YOUR person and still remain mobile/comfortable/effective in YOUR version of SHTF. Some people expect to get into prolonged close-range gun battles (these people watch too many movies). Some people expect to bug-in and lay low as long as possible, only needing to 'defend the castle'. While others may plan to become part of a wider pre-planned network of people and will fulfill a specific role within that network. Point is: plan for your own unique set of priorities/circumstances/abilities. Personally, I only carry 50 rounds (2-20 round mags and 1-10 round) for my already heavy M1A and 30 rounds (2-15 round mags) for my backup SIG 365XL. When factoring in the rest of my load-out such as: armor, first aid gear, comms./nav. equipment, food/water, basic survival gear, etc. it just starts to get too heavy. My SHTF scenario planning involves operating in more of a scout/recon capacity and never being more than an over-night hike away from my home. The key to this plan is having enough ammo on-hand at home to reload each of my mags at least twice.
I like the 7.62x51. It's bigger and heavier and it puts a bigger smack down compared to 5.56. I'm not dissing 5.56. It is accurate using a 20 inch barrel 1:8 twist and 62 grain freedom seeds.
Exactly. I remember when “Sons of Guns” was on tv years ago and shortly before the show was canceled they did a SHTF scenario. Two guys had full range of whatever they wanted to choose. One guy picked 5.56 and another chose .22lr. Other than range, the .22lr beat out the 5.56 in every challenge. Most challenges being storing, transporting, and ammo count/weight. I think the ammo ratio was something along the lines of 200-300 5.56 to the .22lrs thousands of rounds before weight became an issue. Personally, I would have chose .17hmr though.
Dang! You guys make me so envious! All I have is my grandpa's hundred year old .22 single shot and a brick of ammo. I think I missed the boat on this one....so sad...
IMO, definitely stock up on ammo when the “best” deals are to be had, but also I would focus efforts on other items that haven’t climbed much in price IE magazines, gun parts(the important ones) a good knife or 5, emergency radio, good walkies, water filtration systems (Sawyer, Lifestraw) Boots, propane heater. Propane stove, medical supplies. And obviously as much food as your kitchen and cabinets can hold
This comment should have WAY more likes then it has.....Bullets are great, and you should buy as many as you can....However there are more important things that people need to actually survive....Water, food, shelter, medical.....You can have 80k rounds of ammo, but what are yo protecting if you dont have everything else you need to live.....?
@@joshw6212 I came late to the party on this one. Lol thanks brother. I always tell any prepper new or old to make lists and stick to them. After I get those I will be in a pretty good spot all thing considered
@Bravo Six did you actually read my comment? my comment was saying all the ammo in the world means nothing if you dont have the rest of things you need to survive.....? how you prepare also wildly depends on where your "castle" is located. Where i live, bugging out is quite unlikely to be necessary....i dont like in an apartment in NYC....i live in a very rural area and the few neighbors i do have are either immediate family or close friends with the same mindset as myself. I raise/grow A LOT of my own food, and have unlimited water supply
Very sound and rational advice. I'd seen similar about a year ago, but they recommended 10 mags for each rifle, 5 mags for each handgun, and enough ammo to keep them all loaded, with enough for three reloads of each. By the time that I'd seen that, I had already exceeded that amount of ammo (January 2020). I'm still buying .308 because I just bought that new bolt-action rifle, but am set for 5.56, .22 LR, and 9mm.
What you consider shtf and how often you go to the range determine how much ammo and magazines you should have. When I was in the Army, I spent a year patrolling/driving throughout the Southern part of Afghanistan and nobody in my unit went through their full combat load, and I was in Infantry. Combat load was 12 M4 or AR mags.
If you have 20,000 rounds of ammo in your home you just supplied someone else with ammo. In a shtf situation you cannot hold your home and cannot bug out with all that ammo in a emergency. When 30 people attack your home you need to get out asap.
I don't imagine that anyone with 20,000 rounds has it all located in a single location. If they're smart enough to have 20,000 rounds, they're smart enough to have it cached in several areas.
Thanks for the great breakdown. I agree completely as a minimum. Couple of things. Like that you cleared the ak after dropping the mag. Good example of handling for newbies and a reminder to those of us who are experienced. Always adhere to safety. Also like that you mentioned mag count along with round count. 1000 rounds and 1 mag is not going to cut it. 300 rounds and 6 mags is better. I have the same philosophy regarding mags. Minimum 6. Buy a new tool and buy extra mags. Sometimes things break. For new people, that is great advice. Those of us that are more experienced hopefully are better set. My load out is very different than yours, but we have the same concept. My bug out setup is 500 pistol in the go bag with 5 extra mags. Also 15 extra mags, totaling out at 1000 rounds for the carbine. Gets into a weight management issue if you are a smaller person like my wife, but her load out does not duplicate some gear I have, so is lighter (trenching shovel, fire starting and cooking equipment, etc). While she gets the med kit extra, I get the shoulder mag bag extra. Her total load out minus pistol and rifle is 30lbs and mine is 48lbs. Plus firearms. That is for 2 pistol and 2 carbine for 2 people. And as you also said, practice with it. Again thank you for the comprehensive breakdown, even so far as platform and caliber.

My ammo numbers are pretty close to your “bare minimum.” I think it’s up to each individual how much ammo they store or the number of magazines they have. That being said, I remember reading a book by Bruce Clayton called “Life After Doomsday”....great book with lots of valuable information for today’s prepper’s. I read a statement in the book by a man named Will Brownell, I think, who said, (and I’m paraphrasing) that anyone who expects to survive long enough to use all the thousands of rounds of ammo they may have stored against a determined force of “invaders” or “predators” who want what you have, is either a fool or an eternal optimist! I think that is true, unless you happen to be part of a fairly large group of like preppers who are well armed and supplied. A lone prepper and/or a family realistically has no chance. I would rather store a reasonable amount of ammo and mags and be able to use all or most of it in the above scenario, than allow the bad guys to get their hands on what’s left of my thousands of rounds I stored and use that ammo against other Americans struggling to survive the SHTF situation. Just my thoughts...don’t mean to offend anyone with my comments. Good video Magic Prepper! Keep them coming! Thanks!
I just had this conversation with a friend of mine the other day. I limited the number of calibers in the guns that I purchase so that they are all using the same calibers, decreasing the number of calibers I need to keep on hand.
The minimum ammo and magazine amount should always get bigger as time goes on. With the way things are a good minimum set up should be a defensive pistol with 4-6 mags and a defensive rifle like an ar15 or ak with a standard load out of 6 mags plus one in the gun. Never let it fall below those numbers and always have ammo for those mags.
When stacking ammo, don't forget to write a date of purchase on the box and use a grease pencil to write a mo/yr on the magazine when loading. Will also make it easier to choose which ammo to take to the range.
Enough to win a few fire fights. After that, you'll be departed OR you'll be collecting ammo AND new weapons everytime you win. And if you don't win, your stockpile goes to someone new. 👍🏼
Don't give up hope, got lucky at academy this morning. They had Remington 250 rd mega packs in 9mm for 89 bucks. Works out to about .36 a round. 2 box limit now though, luckily I had drug my wife out with me
People didn't buy my Black Talon bullets when they were 50 cents a round. Now I'm glad they didn't. I was left with thousands of rounds when I closed my store.
My philosophy is have a “basic loadout” for all the shooters in the house; a few boxes in reserve, then train with the rest. If the situation ever actually arises, the rounds spent in training will help you win that gunfight, which is what matters. Then take the losers shit and carry on.
More ammo is always awesome. But just keep in mind having to carry it just in case something happens. We had a historic flood in my area last year and half the city was under water. I have 5 rifles and 4 hand guns and about 10.000 rounds of ammo for “fighting” and it was a pain in the butt to carry out of the house lol.
12:15 If I had a brand new .... well .... If you would be a new owner and you never owned anything like this before and if you need training as you mentioned .... and if you need to sight it in ... forget about that 200 rd count .... 20 to break the barrel in .. a beginner 20-100 to sight it in .... another couple hundred to get familiar with the tool .... and you better make sure its all the same kind and same brand from the same batch so your zero does not shift on you .... if you just spend well over a thousand on that platform plus a few hundred for optics and lights, a case, a safe, training ... it is not far fetched that you need to spend at least a grind on ammo .... buy 1000 rd as the BARE minimum .... just saying ... to buy 180 or 200 rd and buy the tool, not have the optics zeroed ... that would be like buying a helicopter for SHTF or a stickshift 6x6 bug out truck and have it sit in your garage .... you have 20 gallons of fuel stored safely but you have NEVER taking it for a spin previously and you only know how to dive automatics .... so what good does that do you ?!? you are setting yourself up for failure
I figured when I have two closets practically full of ammo I would have enough, but even with a 6-8 year supply of ammo that I have , I feel I need more.
There you go! That's a good video! The most important message that most should get from this video is The worst time to go looking for the stuff you need is when you need it the most! That goes for everything but most especially a firearm and ammo!

Eleventy-billion rounds!!! Actually you're highly unlikely to have the need for more than 20 or 30, even if things go full on mad max, the goal is to avoid firefights. And if ya get through 20 or 30 without dying then someone also "brought" you more guns and ammo when they brought the fight. That said 200 is a better place to be, 500 is probably better than that, 1000... You see where I'm going with this.
Dude thank u I never thought of that! U can get ammo from the person that brought the fight to u! That makes me feel better dont get me wrong I got ammo but u can never have enough but if forced into a gun fight if I win I get there ammo!! Thanks brother!
Those who avoid fighting, will starve. Those who fight, and are good at it, will get all the resources. Those who are too stationary, or whom are too aggressive will also perish. It will take a balance of stealth, ferociousness, and evasiveness to survive. Strike light lightning, move like a tornado, hide like the wind. Now, the good news: most people are ill-equipped, untrained and just straight no good for what's coming. This makes them relatively uncompetitive. If you have multiple barrels, many cans of ammo and lots of CQB and urban combat practice, you will likely steamroll anyone in your way, except maybe rogue military elements. There may be weeks of calm before the storm. Day 1 of empty shelves will probably not be day 1 of combat, just as it hasn't been for many other disasters, like the first in California. But, weeks of neglect will have changed people's attitudes and you will find that you can't hide. Starving people have an astounding sense of smell. If you've ever fasted, you'll know what I mean. All five senses become incredibly sharp.
Thanks for the awesome video when people have any plan then they have a goal set. so once that goal is filled then they can start the next and build a chance for survival.
Since you’re talking about loadout; I think prudence dictates you should mention the weight per loaded mag + your gear. I feel like some people may underestimate the exertion sprinting with full kit.
Depends on what S hits your fan, how long it hits, and what your looking for afterwards. For game getting in a rural area, at least 500rnds of 22, 200rnds of small shot for 20 or 12ga, and 50 rnds of big game rifle or slugs per year you plan to forage (plus fishing hooks, nets, rat traps, snare wire and air gun pellets). What I've been telling newbies is enough mags for 120 rounds per defensive rifle (200 is better), and for pistols least three mags or enough mags for 40 rounds whichever is greater (60 is better). Enough ammo to fill all of these three times (goal is five, but three works), plus 50 rounds to zero and familiarize, and try to get a second set of mags. It isnt enough to really train with, but you can dry fire and do stopage training with snap caps, and when it really gets bad you won't outlive that probably. Shotguns, get buckshot when you can find it, but I consider the defensive shotgun to be something you don't go past the mailbox with. I'm glad I was able to score 60 3.5" buckshot for my 535. Sure, 3+1, but with a imp mod choke tube and 54 pellets of #4 Buck, if anyone needs a second dose I screwed up.
Sighting in your main battle rifle and keeping it in check from time to time alone, will take a fair amount of ammo. Add to that a very scant training at least every month which will burn up more. An actual fire fight should be avoided as much as possible in SHTF. It would be foolish to go looking for a fight unless you were in an actual declared war and needed to jump in a battle risking it all for the main cause. If you are just protecting your property and family, you will probably get by without blowing a lot of ammo. The people who live amongst high populations may never have enough!
I’ve always considered .17 hmr to be an ultimate SHTF round. It’s small and light so you can carry a lot of it and it can terminate virtually anything in a myriad of ranges and shoots flat/accurate out to several hundred yards. I mean, what else can you really ask for?
Even back then we knew something was coming. The signs of a civilization collapse aren't subtle. People are just really dull and don't know something's coming, until it smacks them right on the nose, which, by then, it's too late.
@@SharonAnnMenefee Agreed on the crossbow. A compound or recurve bow might require strength that you or others simply do not have if things get truly hairy. More points of contact are always a good thing, in addition to less size and weight. People like to shit on crossbows as 'less pure' or 'unsportsmanlike'. I want to hand those people an Atlatl and see what meat they bring home.
As Clint says, in a fire fight he never heard anyone complain of having to much ammo but, heard many complain they didn't have enough. Stack it , stack it high and deep then stack more.

We will stay I our home. Don't know how long we will last, but at least I can thin the herd some for the rest of you.
This is a great video to show new owners and new preppers that it's attainable to be able to prepare for SHTF without spending a ton or feeling entirely insane. SHTF isn't always a social unrest or zombie apocalypse. It can be as simple as some crackhead breaking into your house for drug money. Plus, if you're able to successfully use the first 100 rounds or so, I'd assume you'll probably be able to get your hands on someone else's ammo at that point. That being said, I have way more ammo than that, but to someone who is a new gun owner, I do think this is a great start.
If you can't find ammo at any store near you and you need to get some you can check armslist it's like craigslist for weapons, ammo and accessories and you can usually find someone selling ammo in your area and you can even get some really good deals on weapons once in a while. You can also find people who want to trade weapons or you can post yours for trade it's a great site. I hope this helps someone.
@@Darkpara1 Well i will admit that 1 year mandatory military service, 30+ years shooting hobby, 13 years of prepping and 76 years since our lovely neighbor tried to invade my country might have some influence on my ammo needs :)
It depends on where you live. If you're in the city, you probably won't need much. You won't last very long. Suburbanites may need a little more, because they can hold out longer. Rural folks need more, because they will actually have something to defend. Lone defenders may not last very long, but groups and families will need enough to survive multiple attacks. We keep enough ammo for 8 people to encounter 8 firefights a month for 8 months, plus hunting ammo.
@@smokethirteen Most firefights don't last over ten minutes, or until one side figures out that it's a lost cause. If there is an imbalance in the number of adversaries, it could last longer. So figure 800 to 1000 rounds per group, or half a battle pack per person. If one person faces multiple perps, there is going to be some spray and pray, so a BP can go quickly. If people are in defensive positions and taking pot shots, they might not use a lot of ammo, but they should carry plenty. I hope we don't get to that point. Pray for peace, prepare for war.

At bare minimum.
At least
all of it,if youre just now trying to find ammo....youre screwed

Boots waterproof most of the time. A pair you may have to wear for over a year 24/7
This comment should have WAY more likes then it has.....Bullets are great, and you should buy as many as you can....However there are more important things that people need to actually survive....Water, food, shelter, medical.....You can have 80k rounds of ammo, but what are yo protecting if you dont have everything else you need to live.....?

@Bravo Six did you actually read my comment? my comment was saying all the ammo in the world means nothing if you dont have the rest of things you need to survive.....? how you prepare also wildly depends on where your "castle" is located.
I live in a FREE State and all my neighbors (15 houses in 1000+ acres) are all prepared as well as I am! I will take my chances.
I don't imagine that anyone with 20,000 rounds has it all located in a single location. If they're smart enough to have 20,000 rounds, they're smart enough to have it cached in several areas.
@@jeffmcgovern5674 you would be surprised
I agree, in a bug out situation you might take 5, 40rnd mags. More than that and your cutting into survival tools and supplies.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I tried to be sympathetic to the newcomers dealing with these crazy prices.
Thanks!

Basic U.S. infantry load out is 7 mags for 210rds. 6 in the rig and 1 in the weapon. Just for a point of reference.
When stacking ammo, don't forget to write a date of purchase on the box and use a grease pencil to write a mo/yr on the magazine when loading. Will also make it easier to choose which ammo to take to the range.

My philosophy is have a “basic loadout” for all the shooters in the house; a few boxes in reserve, then train with the rest. If the situation ever actually arises, the rounds spent in training will help you win that gunfight, which is what matters. Then take the losers shit and carry on.
Thanks for sharing your opinion on this!

Day 1 of empty shelves will probably not be day 1 of combat, just as it hasn't been for many other disasters, like the first in California. id buy them, sp ammo is good.
the 7.62x39 is simular to a 30-30 ballistically.
Were they brass as well?
Yes it was brass 15$ for 20 rounds PPU was the brand.
@@Aceskate92 should definitely buy them
I'd grab a couple boxes as well I've been looking for sp and all I've seen is fmj
Very help full!
How about low availability?...🤔
.22s are everywhere
@@EroticOnion23
Availability is just under 30 feet in either direction.
Glad I stocked up before the crisis hit. Bought tons of it in 2017-2019. Things were going good and that is the best time to prepare.
Even back then we knew something was coming. The signs of a civilization collapse aren't subtle. People are just really dull and don't know something's coming, until it smacks them right on the nose, which, by then, it's too late.
Years ago when I was in the Marine Corps a full loadout was 7 - 30 rd mags full plus enough to fill all magazines again . 420 rds total for the M16.
Honestly ammo is the last thing on my mind. I got two pistols and about 500 rounds for each gun. That's enough for me
that's plenty ....... I bought most of my stuff in advance and I'm happy with what I have ..
..... Is it?
Thats plenty of ammo but id look into getting some superior firepower like a rifle or a shot gun almost everyone owns level 3 body armour
@@kyleacker5318 to me another guy is out of budget and is at the bottom of priority list. I'd much rather stock up on food
@@davem3708 why have two hand guns though shotguns are cheaper and so are there ammo.
Get all the ammo while you can, but get a bow and arrows 🏹 in case you runout 🇺🇸👊🏻
And get a scimitar and go medieval on that Ass.
Crossbow
@@SharonAnnMenefee Agreed on the crossbow. A compound or recurve bow might require strength that you or others simply do not have if things get truly hairy. More points of contact are always a good thing, in addition to less size and weight. People like to shit on crossbows as 'less pure' or 'unsportsmanlike'.
I want to hand those people an Atlatl and see what meat they bring home.
Hell of a good informative presentation !!
Good video with some good thoughts!
Trick question. No such thing as too much ammo. No one EVER has enough
> 2000 rounds of .223, >2000 rounds of 7.62x39, > 2000 rounds of .308, >1500 rounds of .40. Forgot to pick up some 12 gauge.
You're screwed then, cuz now 00buck is over 2 dollars a round for whatever reason.
@@hobbz4921 yes sir...it's all gone^^^... 30-06 is right around $3 a round i slid in under the wire and picked up 400 rds @ $1 a round ...crazy...
@@gatormcklusky5850 This is so weak, and I have a sinking feeling that this is gonna be the "new normal".
Great video!
As Clint says, in a fire fight he never heard anyone complain of having to much ammo but, heard many complain they didn't have enough. Stack it , stack it high and deep then stack more.
My opinion 500 minimum but the goal should be at least 1K+ for personal and practice. Maybe enough to arm each family memeber or squad :D
I wish my family was on board with all this... they think I'm crazy. The only one in agreement with me. Is my mother. Go figure. I could have a small army if people would wake up. There fast asleep thinking nothing will happen in the USA 🙄🙄🙄 smdh
You dont need much. It aint a movie , you and i wont make it long if engaged in constant gunfights where 1k rds per weapon would be plausible
Training.
Speak for yourself. You’ll regret that decision if you’re the one out of ammo while getting shot at.
Agreed, everyone thinks they're John Wick till shit starts flying. Half the guys I see buying up tons of ammo talking about shtf, are 70lbs overweight and couldn't run half a mile. Sure are good at shooting steel targets while sitting at a bench on a one way range😏
I target pro to save ammo. I don't have one yet, but am looking I to get at least one for 9mm. I'm over 70 and wife has cancer, so with our health we can't run and gun with the young folks. We will stay I our home. Don't know how long we will last, but at least I can thin the herd some for the rest of you.
@@hueyhulk954 yes training, hunting, and trading. I buy rounds for guns I dont have.
If S really HTF, 200 rounds is nothing
I'm glad I bought most of my stuff prePrice gouging ...
@Yamer Hammer , +50% increase is gouging
@Ipso Hammer it is I know for a fact it's being bought up. One example is gun broker
My personal supply far exceeds your recommendations. This video made me feel good. 👍
Deadpool went with 3k rounds... I'm following his lead hahaha
My country has 20k max ammo limit a person. This happens when you don´t have second amendment in your constitution.
20k..... you're either equipping a company of soldiers, or you're entertaining fantasies about how much you'd need.
I agree with your sentiments but not necessarily for defense, for hunting game.
@@johnnewbold4622 I'm just being theoretical. Of course I don't want ammo to be used for self defense, but nobody can rule it out in this day and age.
@@billywalker9223 Yep, the ugly side of trying to live an honest life after the collapse. May you aim straight if (more probably 'when') you find yourself in that situation.
