I don't really get it. Is that a social commentary or something? I'm not american so I don't know.
Basically since the days of slavery, there has been a societal rule known as the "one-drop" rule, which says that if you have "one-drop" of black blood in you, that makes you black. This rule is utter and complete rubbish though because there were then and still are now people who have black ancestry who look white. It seems that race is just based on how a person looks, which is the very definition of superficial.
IKR XD!!!
***** Yup, I know. I studied about the superficiality of race in school.
As a white guy I just had a laugh at this fun sketch. Then after the sketch is over I suddenly realize my half-Asian daughter will one day have to stand before the council.

As a Hispanic with a black grandma, I can say that in my experience, the black community does not view you as black if you're not at least half, or outwardly black. Heck, even if you were half, but lightskin, they might still not view you as black.
In a lot of communities, a lighter skinned mixed can be deemed “black” based on their level of ghetto mannerism and use of street knowledge.
I'm half black but with light enough skin to pass for white if I cover up my 3b/c hair, and I haven't been to a Black affinity group in years because everyone will glare at me if I open my mouth in the slightest. For a lot of half black people, you're treated as either 100% black or not black at all.
The one-drop rule is a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood") is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms). HOWEVER, people in many other countries have tended to treat race less rigidly, both in their self-identification and how they regard others. Just as a person with physically recognizable African ancestry can claim to be black in the United States, someone with recognizable Caucasian ancestry may be considered white in Brazil, even if mixed race. According to Jose Neinstein, a native white Brazilian and executive director of the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute in Washington, in the United States, "If you are not quite white, then you are black." However, in Brazil, "If you are not quite black, then you are white." Neinstein recalls talking with a man of Poitier's complexion when in Brazil: "We were discussing ethnicity, and I asked him, 'What do you think about this from your perspective as a black man?' He turned his head to me and said, 'I'm not black,' ... It simply paralyzed me. I couldn't ask another question."

Obviously still a great video, but as a history major I'd like to add that I love how they made it seem almost like a court proceeding, drawing parallels to the US's historic past of trying to legally define race to maintain the ability to enslave or discriminate against black people. Also, DNA tests that tell you what country you're from are based on what specific genes they notice in your DNA that often belong to specific groups, and the percentages they give aren't based on your actual heritage. That's how both my mom and my aunt got different results and percentages on ancestry despite the website still confirming that they were sisters from the same mother and father.
That makes sense. While your mum and aunt have the same set of parents, they'll have got their own grab-bag of genetics. We may get mathematical about heritage, but genes don't work mathematically.
Yeah, can attest for the ancestry thing. My grandfather’s results came back as 100% white. He’s a registered member of the Manitoba Metis Federation (or was at some point), spoke Michif as a child, has had genealogy done proving he is not 100% white, and got sent to a catholic school (read in between the lines for that last one).
@@Eosinophyllis That’s really interesting, thank you for sharing! Another note that may be worth considering specifically in the case of indigenous people is that the US and Canadian governments historically benefited when they could limit the number of people considered to be of indigenous heritage, as it made it easier to enact colonization and fabricate claims to indigenous land and resources. When combined with the historical economic disenfranchisement of indigenous people limiting their access to genetic testing (which in turn makes laboratories which run those tests less likely to invest in discovering genes common among those groups), the reasons why these tests fail BIPOC and Indigenous people specifically becomes far more clear.
Sorry if you’re already well aware of this, I just wanted to share the information I have on this topic since I’ve studied this as a part of my history degree and hope to teach in Canada in the future.

Genetics can be weird for mixed people. My niece is an eighth Korean and she could pass for half, unlike her father who doesn't look like he as a drop of Asian blood despite being a fourth.
Many quarter Asians don't look Asian. Like Chessy Prout, (she was the girl who was in the boarding school sexual assault case that made national news a few years ago and she came forward earlier this year after she got sick and tired of being portrayed as a nameless vitcim and wrote a memoir of her experience) you probably couldn't tell just by looking at her that she's 25% Japanese due to the fact that she has blonde hair and blue eyes and pretty much looks white but her mom's white and her dad's half Japanese.
There was this half japanese kid at my summer camp who looked 100% white, just with dark hair and eyes
Ganda Gandara Filipinos don’t count. Your ancestry is Austro-Polynesian and/or Caucasian. Philippians are more likely to look black or white than Asian. Well, they used to. Due to excessive migration in the past centuries, that might have changed drastically. I mean there are white people everywhere in the past half millennia. And the Chinese are migrating like flies.
As for Philippine asians, they are relatively new. You guys aren’t even Asian. Only called as such cuz of the regional naming.
And also people being uneducated. And yes, the English word for Filipino (citizens of Felipe or Philip anglicized) is Philippian. Yes, similar to that city state in Greece which is named Filippo which is Philip anglicized. Remember, the South East of Asia was once named East Indies. You could’ve been called Indians. So why do you call yourselves Asians, I would never know. I always say islanders but I would be corrected by ignorant people who have no idea what they’re talking about. Even would say that they aren’t American nor Spanish. Which is especially weird considering it hasn’t even been 100 years since Americans left and for the longest time, was a Spanish colony. The other nations surrounding that country know their culture now and integrated English or French or Dutch. Not the Philippines though. Weird.
Terminology aside and back to biology, there’s a reason why some quarter look more or less the other and it’s due to genetic skipping. Some dominant genes go dormant and the recessive ones become the more dominant and that generation will have more dominant recessive genes than the dominant ones. But when they have a kid, their offsprings won’t look like the parents but their grandparents (dominant genes are more dominant again).
oh gusano
I'm half middle eastern and I am white af. My father wasn't, he was very dark. Genes don't always seem to like the way we categorize things it seems.
Yeah, it's mostly random. Check out interracial couples who get twins. In the most extreme cases, one twin can look completely white and the other completely black.

I love this episode of Atlanta.
This is extremely accurate, especially that ending.
+Joshua Hernandez an extremely accurate what?
+Joshua Hernandez Are you the Joshua Hernandez I know? I swear to God. If so, then hola!
+Kyle Scott that's racist.
You know what makes me annoyed? That eastern Asian countries AREN'T all of the countries in Asia. There's the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia, and the Middle East.
We're never recognised (the brown Indians) despite doing as well as these Chinese, Japenese and Korean etc.
+Concerned Person it's obviously because Indians look way different compared to East Asians... Japanese/Chinese/Koreans all become classified as Asians and people can hardly tell them apart unless you're one of them. Indians get their own label because they're much more easily distinguishable. And 'Asian' itself don't mean much other than continent labeling -.-
I'm 1/2 Mongolian, does that make me Mongolian enough to conquer the known world?
Yes but you will be silently judged
Not with that attitude
depends if u can do throat sing
Yes, since Chingis Khagan himself was 1/2 Mongolian (his mom was Turkic).
You are Mongolian enough to attempt to conquer the known world, but not Mongolian enough to succeed.

cant be the only one who really wants to see the black council do their thing
You just did, it's at the end of this sketch.
You did... 😂😂😂😂
The black council has changed quite a bit and no longer accepts Rachel Dolezals and Kardashians
What percentage qualifies for the pass?
@Elite Virus According to black Twitter, whatever percent makes you look black. If you don't look black then you are not black in their eyes.
The *Asian Council* knows all, sees all, and counts all.
LOL the zoom call mic and angry parent jokes!
*That was too real*
Are you sure you're Asian enough to judge?
Kory Mann I asked my friend who's full Vietnamese, he said it holds up. I only look Asian, though I've been mistaken and spoken to in 3 different languages. I'm Mexican by the way LOL.
Darkknight0777 I have the opposite problem. I’m half fillipino. Everyone thinks I’m Mexican. Lol
Samuel Tamayo I'm Filipino with some Chinese and Spanish. And because I speak English a lot, people think I grew up in the west or I'm half. I grew up in Visayas.
It happens, my Dad is white and Mom Filipino and while I was in Italy I think someone from there asked if I was Italian. Not 100% sure though as I don't speak the language. Guess I am Giuseppe Cruz.

Koreans in korea: “You’re not _completely_ korean”

Ye nah hmmmmm....maybe?
Nahhhhh
(All jokes aside, it's really about mentality and overall 'behavior')
hahaha yeah I agree, although I have to say it's easier for guys, as long as you served in the ROK army, society will accept you as a Korean.
They have a word for people like that: “Gyopo.” Means you were born and raised in Korea, but moved elsewhere and became “less Korean” during your time abroad. Thus you are not considered an “actual” Korean.
I would know, since I’m a Gyopo myself :)

Ig-nat-ius nah gringo is for “Americans” (as they like to call themselves). Though we might call Canadians gringos anyway because a lot of ppl don’t see much difference
@@sasshiro it depends on where you're from. In Argentina, gringo is anyone who is foreign and (most likely) white (but also most likely from the US/Canada). In the US, gringo is a white person. In Mexico, gringo is most likely white Americans, but can be all Americans and Canadians.

As a half Asian, this was quite funny. My dad’s black and my mom’s Asian. The way that black people except that 10% but some of my distant Asian family don’t count me as Asian… y’all are so real for this.
One drop rule is still mainly pushed by blacks, and they do claim Megan. They claim anyone that "looks" mildly black. Take for instance Eartha Kit daughter, before her nose job "black" after nose job "white." Her DNA didn't change, just blacks who claimed her stance did. Looks matter over actual blood. Which is why Cardi B can get by with the "supposedly" bad slur (nword) yet apologized over a fucking hairstyle.
