  • My mackerel fishing season 2022 is finally open! I was fishing mackerel from the shore at Stora Amundön, Gothenburg. It was a couple of days before Midsummer, the water temperature was +18 °C, and I was expecting that mackerel should already come close to the shoreline to be fished from the shore. A couple of hours of fishing at a beautiful weather and I came home with my first mackerel of 2022.
    My gear:
    - Rod: 10-foot Caperlan Ilicium-500, 20-60 g.
    - Reel: Daiwa 20 Laguna LT 4000-C.
    - braided main line with a diameter of 0.18 mm, fluorocarbon leader with a diameter of 0.4 mm and a length of 3 m.
    Lures/flies:
    - Savage Gear Seeker ISP 102 mm 28 g NL 01-Green Silver
    - Nice TiED Shrimp Pink # 4

Nice catch. Mackerel was the first nice fish i had catched as a newbie. I guess metal jigs are your favorite lures. I can only catch fish with metal jigs. What do you think of soft plastics in sea fishing? Are they waste of time?

Soft plastics are good and are used for fishing for example cod and pollock. Those fish can swallow those soft plastics pretty well. But for mackerel I do not think they will work. Probably a very small soft plastic. My choice for mackerel is any bright or glittery lure below 10cm with a hook at the end.

Bro, I just move with the work on Lyeskil plse can you help me to understand if i need to have any license for fishing and offcourse what is the best for mackerel fishing and also when the season start. Can we catch on this time February??

Hi! My suggestion for you is to go to the local fishing tackle shop and ask locals over there what and where you can fish this time of the year. But I am afraid they will tell you the same what I already told you. You have chances to catch mackerel from June till September in that area. No way in February. You do not need to buy a license to fish in the sea but you have to follow the rules. The rules for your area are summarized here svenskafiskeregler.lansstyrelsen.se/?hand=false&nat=false&skal=false&ovr=false&per=false&start=&stop=&bbox=288762.06605059956,6463048.7113548,293569.52285780036,6467856.168161999
The sea around Lysekil is called Skagerrak. The rules are as follows:
Fishing for halibut is prohibited in Skagerrak and Kattegatt January 1 - March 31. Fishing for cod, pollack and haddock is prohibited inside the trawl limit in Skagerrak and Kattegatt January 1 - March 31. Fishing for salmon and trout is prohibited in the coastal water area in Skagerrak and Kattegatt October 1 - March 31. So right now it is out of season for a lot of fish. You may try to catch some herring of flatfish, but for those I can't give you any advice.
In Skagerrak and Kattegatt, the minimum size of herring is 18 cm, mackerel 20 cm (catching for feeding purposes 30 cm), Atlantic horse mackerel 15 cm, haddock 27 cm, Pollock 30 cm, hake 30 cm, whiting 23 cm, flounder 20 cm, plaice 27 cm, Common dab 23 cm, Witch 28 cm, Lemon sole 25 cm, Common sole 24 cm, Megrim 25 cm. In Skagerak and Kattegatt except the Brofjorden, the minimum size of cod is 30 cm, all permitted gear applies. The measure is counted on the distance from the nose tip to the outermost tip of the tail fin (total length).
For mackerel I would recommend you a rod around 10 fot (3 m) 10-40 g for lure fishing or 30-60 g for Sabiki rig fishing, with a 4000 reel. For lure fishing 0.15 mm braid and a fluorocarbon leader 0.4 mm on the reel. Any glittery lure around 20 g weight and around 8 cm length will work.
This time of the year I prefer to fish stocked trout instead. The nearest lake to you may be Hallsjön. You can buy a licence and read the rules here: www.ifiske.se/fiske-hallsjon.htm
You can also search for other freshwaters at ifiske.se where to fish.
If you want to try freshwater fishing around Göteborg, you need to buy a license called Gula Kortet. www.sportfiskarna.se/Fiske/Fiske-i-G%C3%B6teborg/Fiskevatten Here is a guide with a map where you are allowed to fish www.sportfiskarna.se/portals/sportfiskarna/PDF/fiske-goteborg/Gula_Kortet-guiden_jun2021.pdf?ver=2021-06-17-204046-753
Good luck or skitfiske (shitty fishing), that is what fishermen wish each other in Sweden!

Be careful when you order from AliExpress to Sweden. You have to pay customs handling fee of 75-125 SEK depending on the parcel. www.postnord.se/en/receiving/collect/from-another-country/common-questions-and-answers-about-vat-on-shipment-from-china
