It's late September, and I've spent many hours fishing in recent weeks, and it's starting to take its toll.
This is the toughest fight I've had with a fish in a very long time. In fact, I can't readily recall a battle that has been harder than this one. It's taking a toll on me both physically and mentally.
Will I still manage to land the fish?
NOTE! Mörrums Kronolaxfiske/Sveaskog has chosen to remove the rule about only barbless hooks for the 2024 season. Instead, they will invest more time and effort in informing about how Catch and Release (C&R) should be carried out. I think that is a very wise decision!
Starting from 2023, Mörrums Kronolaxfiske/Sveaskog has introduced a new rule allowing only barbless hooks. After fishing barbless throughout 2023, I can confirm that this inevitably leads to significantly more lost fish over time, resulting in a much poorer fishing experience. Please keep this in mind if you're considering fishing in the Mörrum river in the future - and if, like me, you intend to adhere to the rules.

Det är i slutet av september och jag är fiskat många timmar de senaste veckorna och det börjar ta ut sin rätt.
Det här är den hårdaste fighten jag har haft med en fisk på mycket länge. Jag kan faktiskt inte på rak arm komma ihåg någon kamp som varit tuffare än den här. Den tär på mig både fysiskt och psykiskt.
Ska jag ändå lyckas landa fisken?
OBS! Mörrums Kronolaxfiske/Sveaskog har valt att ta bort regeln om enbart hullinglösa krokar till säsongen 2024. Istället kommer de att lägga mer tid och kraft på att informera om hur C&R ska utföras. Det tycker jag är ett mycket klokt beslut!
Från och med 2023 har Mörrums Kronolaxfiske/Sveaskog infört en ny regel att det enbart är tillåtet att fiska med hullinglösa krokar. Efter att ha fiskat hullinglöst hela 2023 kan jag konstatera att detta oundvikligen leder till dramatiskt fler tappade fiskar över tid. Vilket i sin tur leder till en mycket sämre fiskeupplevelse. Ha detta i åtanke om du funderar på fiska i Mörrumsån framöver - och, som jag, avser att hålla dig till reglerna.

In Estonia (my home country) it is forbidden to fish while standing in the water.
Do you have to use barbless hooks?

Thanks! Yes, it is really beautiful here. Unfortunately, there was a new rule in 2023 that it is only allowed to fish with barbless hooks. How it will be in 2024 I don't know but there is no indication that they will remove it. Even though the only rule change resulted in those who actually followed the rule losing a lot of fish. There were no direct checks on fishing without barbs, so it is in principle possible to continue with barbs as before. Personally, I stick to the rules, but if 2024 is as frustrating for me as 2023, it will unfortunately be the last year I fish in Mörrumsån. /John
@@DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg was it frustrating just because of the barbless rule or was it something more aswell? In here it was looking like the usual case, no water on the rivers and our rivers for seatrout and salmon are really short. The shortest is only 1,1km accessible from the sea. And that means that the fish are migrating into the river as late as possible. In this year, the rains started the second week of October and only after that the fish started to migrate. So that gave us 2 weeks of possibility to catch some seafish. Luckily ot was a nice year for me 😁

Yes, it's the barbless hooks that are the problem. I lost a ridiculous amount more fish than I usually do and it puts my mood down. Especially when you know there is an easy solution. Glad you had a good fishing year. /John

Hi John, what rod and reel do you use for salmon and seatrout?
I fish Mörrum with either a 12.6 ft #8-9 rod or a 13.7 ft #8/9. Which I choose depends on the water flow. Most often it will be 13.7 in May and 12.6 in August-September. The reel is a Danielsson EightTwelve. /John
