  • Mackerel fishing started for me on a Midsummer day! It was an early morning, and I went for mackerel fishing from the shore near Marstrand. I was expecting mackerel to be in the area, since middle of June is time when it usually is around Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden, and is close to fish it from the shore. I was fishing mackerel with a short Sabiki rig with 3 hooks and a pirk lure. During the early hours I could see some signs of mackerel as water was boiling from baitfish. Great morning session and I came home with my first mackerel of 2023.
    My gear:
    - Rod: 10-foot Caperlan Ilicium-500, 20-60 g.
    - Reel: Daiwa 20 Laguna LT 4000-C.
    - braided main line with a diameter of 0.18 mm, fluorocarbon leader with a diameter of 0.4 mm and a length of 3 m.
    Lures/flies:
    - Armada EyePilk 28 gram Flash Silver
    - Sabiki rig Seamer with 3 hooks #2.

Here in the USA we use sabiki for similar fish. The same mackerel you catch are smoked here and are quite good. Good luck and thanks for the videos.

Mackerel is so much fun to go after. When they are schooling, it's almost like a non-stop action. I noticed that you were just reeling your line in after casting. Try jigging on your retrieve to give your spoon a little more action. That seem to always work for me. Sad to say, but Mackerel Fishing, at least where I go here in the Northeast (U.S.A.) is just about over. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the tips! I usually do spin stops but not much jigging. Will try!

Yes, it's getting harder and harder. It is fished with net here in Sweden and brought to Norway to feed salmon.

It's been 3 years since I've caught a mackerel in Gullmarsfjorden.
