There will be people who disagree but I really do think Physical Graffiti was their best of so many great albums. It is, in my opinion Led Zeppelin at the peak of their creative powers.

Although there were some amazing songs to come like Achilles Last Stand & In the Evening, I would agree that this was them at their peak creatively. In the following years there was a good deal of mis-fortune & tragedy as well as the effects of drugs. Sadly we'll never know if they would have re-discovered their best, but I definitely think there was so much more to come if it hadn't been for Bonzo's tragic death.

@@michaelatkinson8291 Jimmy Page had very little creative controdution on their final album before Bonhams death. Then Plant grew weary of the 20 min guitar solos on practically every song played live.... I mean you can only sit back and bang a tambourine for so long... Jimmy never had condolences for Robert when his young son died. SO Bonhams death was just the straw that put Zeppelin to rest for good. Without His pal John in the band, there was really little to keep Robert on board

It was John Paul Jones (yet again ) on synthesizer and he wrote most of the song. The low droning sound was made by Page using a violin bow on his guitar.

With 'In The Light,' for instance, we knew exactly what its construction was going to be, but nevertheless, I had no idea at the time that John Paul Jones was going to come up with such an amazing synthesizer intro, plus there's all the bowed guitars at the beginning as well, to give the overall drone effect. "In the Light" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin from their 1975 album Physical Graffiti. Hola Silas y Alivia, from Ned and Janet in España. Lovin the reaction as always and thanks for hanging in with the opening. Here's a quote from JPJ about the synth he used in this song :
"I did use an old EMS VCS3 synthesizer on Physical Graffiti for "In The Light". It wasn't sophisticated enough to really sound like a synthesizer and you really had to be on the ball because it was murder to keep in tune. It did have a little joystick arrangement that could be used to control the pitch, though, so you could slide things; it was very manageable. But it couldn't go on the road. I had too much trouble with the mellotron in those days to take anything else out. Robert Plant was always saying "We've got to do "In The Light" onstage, " and I said, "No way, or I have to contend with synthesizers as well.

I had totally forgotten about this song! Every once in awhile I go on these Led Zep binges but unlike back when I was young and owned all their albums and would play whole albums at a time and not individual songs, now I pretty much just use UA-cam and go song by song unless I get the mood and then I find the playlist for the album. But for that reason, this is just one I never think of. But it's fantastic, and near the end when you said you liked it because it was more or less just the guitar, I hope when you listen to this again later if you do, listen to each instrument individually like you have talked about before. But in this song? Try it once just focusing on the bass guitar all the way through. He's doing some amazing stuff there and he's not playing super hard like he does sometimes, it's just really tasteful and melodic and perfectly in tune but it's still kind of funky and agile. It's an incredible part of what you're hearing, it's just that most of us aren't trained to recognize the bass in the sound mix. On the other hand, if you have played in bands and especially if you have played bass guitar, then it's like this whole other world opens up and that simension is always right there, it's just easily ignored. It just is affecting you subconsciously even though you don't know it. So to me, that's what makes it fun to just focus on that line in the various sections and hear what he's doing and how it interplays with everything else. Especially with Bonzo on the drums of course.

Several times over the decades the question "what's your favorite Zeppelin album?" has come up. I think I used to say II, or maybe "Houses of the Holy," when I was obsessed with "The Ocean," "Over the Hills and Far Away," and "The Rain Song." But then I started saying "Physical Graffiti." I always follow up with: yeah i know it's seems like cheating cos it's a double album, but it really IS the one that best shows their incredible range and adventurous creativity.
