That is a mandolin you were enjoying and it is beautiful. Nice to see young people getting into the music that a lot of us older people grew up with and yes, a lot of us were stoned and or tripping to the tunes back then.
I was 17 and living in Venice, California in 1971. Of course I was high when listening to this song. Followed by a nice Joni Mitchell song …Ladies of the Canyon perhaps?
One of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Again, it's good enough to make you forget Bonham's not even playing. I get that people loved their heavier tracks given how great their rhythm section was, but there was always something so special about Page's acoustic work, and JPJ's amazing accompaniments. Magic.
"Going to California" is wonderful. I know, I know. I say some such about every LZ song, but it's true of every LZ song, at least in one way or another. ;) The lyrics are a real roller coaster of emotions and, as Chris Huber wrote in his review, it "...captures the mystique and naiveté of youth and young, hopeful love...with wide eyes and an unbreakable spirit." From Plant's viewpoint, he said the song was "Me reflecting on the first years of the group, when I was only about 20 and was struggling to find myself in the midst of all the craziness..." Both Plant and Page admired a well-known Canadian-American singer and songwriter called Joni Mitchell who lived in CA at the time, maybe she still does. It is said that Plant had her in mind when he wrote the lines about looking for a woman who has "love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" and who "plays guitar and cries and sings". Page played both 12-string and 6-string guitar, Jones played mandolin, not banjo. And the vocals. Well, what is there left to say about how fabulous and versatile Plant is? There are several videos of LZ performing this live but I think my favorite is from their Earls Court concert in 1975. They performed two other acoustic songs during that set that you've already heard, "That's the Way" and Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp". I highly recommend that you watch those performances. It's good to see that side of them. Another great reaction post, Silas. Very glad that you two enjoyed it! Hi Olivia! :) Edit: Can't wait to hear what you think of the next song. It's something else, that's for sure.

Great song. It's definitely a more mellow offering from Zep and shows another side of their creativity. As others have mentioned, this song is partially inspired by singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell in general and her song "California" specifically. Both Page and Plant were admirers of her work. She often wrote songs with open, alternate tunings and Jimmy also enjoyed playing around with different tunings so set his guitar in an alternate tuning for this track. It was originally titled "A Guide to California" before they settled on this. In general, California had always been a special place for Zep because it was the first place in the States to really embrace the band when they first started touring here. Funnily enough, Jimmy and engineer Andy Johns experienced an earthquake while in California to mix the album.
I'm 58 and grew up in real time with their music. It's still amazing today for me as it was back then. It's wonderful to see young folks like you a couple of generations removed appreciate their music. It was a different world back then with so many amazing bands in the 60's and 70's. It was a golden era of talent.

Just fyi, that’s a mandolin, not a banjo. And the play of the mandolin with the guitar really evokes the sound of the folk music that was prevalent at that time…especially coming out of California. About the lyrics: Robert was a great lover of the music and artists coming out of California in the late 60’s…and had a “crush” of sorts on Joni Mitchell ( one of the top singer/songwriters in modern music). When he speaks of “looking for a Queen without a king, they say she plays guitar….and sings”…he’s speaking of Joni. The “children of the sun” are the people of the youth culture in California at that time. The “canyon” referred to is Laurel Canyon, in the LA area, where so many of the musicians and artists of that period lived. The entire song is basically a love song to a particular place and a particular time…a culture….which is now long gone, but which still remains in the hearts of those who remember it….including Robert Plant’s…..who still will speak of himself as a “sad, old hippie”. Me too.
