Excellent topic and video. I'm an American woman who is married to a Finnish man. The gender equality thing cannot be overstated. Our first few dates we took turns paying for everything, and the things that I was used to guys doing in the US (like holding open doors) are just not as common. Finnish people in general are also very reserved when you first meet them. It's very different from the US. I'm not complaining about it because I prefer it that way. As to learning Finnish, well, I'm trying but the conjugations are murder. At least my brain is getting a workout.

The love of my life was a Finn. I impressed him (Yay!) because I was familiar with the Kalevala! And he reckoned that my Sima was just like his mother's! He was indeed very shy when we first met, but once we became more familiar with each other, he was very talkative. We did not last unfortunately. (My fault. I was young and stupid.) He wanted children and I could not give him children, but we have remained friends over the years. He is single again and his kids are now adults, and we still keep in touch . I would have him back in a minute. Beautiful man... Taught me how to make a Sauna from scrap! Hahaha....

@@pedrobarbosaduarte3704 As far as i know, these conceptions, more than values, dont develop in social ineptitud in finland, just makes friend groups to be more sided and separated between each other, dont really know many people out of close contacts and all of that stuff; in contrast to, lets say the mediterranean, where thou there are friend groups, people tend to know everyone and have various groups of friends. And the emotional reserve.... well, there is that one gloomy statistic finland beats everyone in that may bring the answer to the consequences of this fact, but still, doesnt make em social inepts, they just bubble up emotions and dont know how to deal with them in any shape of form besides burial.
The two factors, thou have obvious downsides, generally also have upsides related to social and survival necesities in an unstable system that may as well go shit at any given time, be by for political, resource related, or climatic reasons, or all together; which given finns and finlands history until pretty recently, explains their disposition.

    Hei!
Thank you so much for this! I am an American teen and I'm dating a Finnish teen, but we live in separate countries. It's hard because the only communication we have is over text and I can't call or facetime because he is self-conscious about his "English voice." We still have been together for almost a year and your videos have helped me understand more about his culture. Thanks to Varpu I am learning how to keep up a few more conversations in Finnish with my boyfriend, which he is proud of. She has helped me not be self-conscious of my "Finnish voice!" I have noticed that when we do video calls and stuff is when we are doing simultaneously something that he enjoys, such as playing Minecraft or some other video game. As for him being Finnish, I definently DID have to take the first step forward, but it was sooo worth it! Once you really get to know him, you can get past that small talk and really enjoy yourselves! My Finnish boyfriend is one very social boy who loves to make funny jokes and work in complements as well, he's very kind and thoughtful, and even though we talk less that I would with an American boy, somehow he seems to be smarter and more thoughtful than any American boy I've met, even though I'm the same way. Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful and I really resonated with Varpu!

I actually have a talkative Finnish boyfriend! I just stumbled upon your channel because I'm learning Finnish and researching Finnish culture. That's nice. We traveled together and we kinda shared the bills, I had made the reservations and he paid for the food and rides, so we both made our effort in the subject which is refreshing. He likes to communicate and he thought he was very talkative for Finnish standards until he met me, hyahaha. I'm the most talkative person he's met.
About touch, what I enjoyed the most is that he always ask for consent before touching me, this is very respectful and I always feel safe and respected around him. He offered me a shoulder massage in our first sauna date

As respects my experience I can say that my now boyfriend who's Finnish he made the very first move and I was really shocked as I was not expecting that at all, but I am glad he did because that's how this all happened - Also, I totally agree about physical interaction, when he came to Mexico City (my hometown) I was really looking forward to sitting so close to each other, holding hands everywhere and maybe just a kiss every now and then, but it didn't happen so I actually was considering that he didn't like me at, but then we discussed about it and he realised that it was important to me, so now he does it (not that much but I admit is some progress) - And last, just to stress the importance of communciation specially if you are dating someone from a different culture, in my case if I do not like something or I get angry I usually tend to be quiet and not to speak, but my boyfriend used to understand this behaviour as just the opposite, like I was really chilled and cool about stuff, which just made me angrier and even more silent and he was like "oh wow this is really working out" so in the end naturally it was a mess until we again spoke about it and ended up laughing just because each one had a different vision about this way of acting. Really cool video Aleksi!

The same thing happened to me and my Finnish boyfriend. An incident occurred and i was very hurt/upset about it, but didn't say anything until 4 weeks later and he didn't even remember what had happened! He was like, " you stewed on that for that long? Just tell me if something is bothering you right away."

Average age for having a _first_ child is 29 years for a woman and 31 years for a man. Marrying for the first time is 31,5 years for women and 34 years for men. So you are right. This is due to finnish people being very educated, and that obviously takes some time. Also finnish culture is very individualistic, so it is considered to be important to do things and express yourself.

Not a huge fan of the expectation to equally provide since I would want to stay at home with my kids as a young mom, but I suppose it's better than the alternative culture where women aren't as equally respected. Other than that dating a Finnish person has been good and I get along really well with his family, everything is very peaceful and stable.

I watched this to more understand Finnish men... I met a Finnish guy by natural encounter during the midsummer holiday, but these all stereotypes are completely inapplicable to him.. he is very straight forward and keeps jokingly talking about how much I love him...(even next day we met he completely sober) but he was a bit too negative at a time about his life in general, so I decide not to move forward with him, so we had a phone call, and we agree not to see each other again, but then he calls me again, saying that he wants to meet, and he said I can take care of you something like this, and I politely reject by making some excuses, he becomes really angry so I say we can meet other times, then he became calmer. so even though I am a foreigner but I really found this already violate my private space that needs to always meet his expectation and meet. Although all I want just to be friends and along but his move is really about serious dating by moving too fast that scared me a bit :/ I guess this is not a typical experience...

Yeah all that is very true! That's how i made it to get my finnish boyfriend :D .
They love so much that you have knowledge of their culture and language as foreigner. I've been into this love for Finland for many years already so it is already quite easy for me to make new finnish friends everytime. I guess that it is the MOST important thing to make friends and why not, a boyfriend.
For example I became a huge hockey fan and that has given me many more friends! They usually got too surprised that a mexican girl loves hockey. I'm fan of Jokerit team for example and even some guys have given me Jokerit's merch as presents (yeah for free) , so when you really touch their hearts, they're the most sweet people and they won't mind to give you some presents.
Nothing to add, i completely agree with every Tip for dating s Finn. I approve 😂.
Btw I'm going to meet some of my finnish hockey idols in a meet &greet. I really wanna hug them for a picture, would be that okay or bothering?? Many fans hug them but maybe is because they're used to it 😆.

Hi Aleksi, first of all, I really enjoy your channel and especially the videos about dating. :) One thing that sprang into my mind while watching this video was the following: What are the life plans of Finnish men? I'm German and here in Germany, it seems there are only two extremes: very traditional men (marrying, kids, house in the countryside etc.) and very unconventional ones (only open relationships, working in a start up, travelling around - the typical "hipster", so to speak - often found in Berlin). I'm really curious what it's like in Finland. I'd appreciate your view on this and I do hope there are more nuances than in Germany. ;)

    • @duhni4551
      @duhni4551 3 роки тому +1

In general Finnish men wants to find a good woman and start a family, a job that provides enough but yet leaves time for life outside the work, traveling is something all Finns do, in general i guess about 1-2 trips in a year, usually in winter time when it is dark and cold here so getting under the sun is very tempting =)
I think it is somewhat general consensus that we also expect that our partner isn't dependent on us, it feels safer and more relaxed when you know that both will land on their feet if things goes south, also it keeps relationship more real.
In short: i feel we are not that different from our counterparts in Europe, though it seems we have much more variety than men in Germany, we are not that extreme =)

      @@simply_saskia You are welcome =)
I don't know is the equality thing going on here so much of an ideology as it is just natural way of life.
Nordics are harsh environments to live in and general consensus here is that it has forced men and women work side by side through out history, so it has just grown in to us.
Then again, i guess adaptation is evolution, go figure =)
Also our women are somewhat temperamental, if i would go and tell any of them to stay home and concentrate on cooking, my life span would be very short, so there is self preservation instincts at play too =D
