I'm not sure if you can change citizenships just like that but you can get a residence permit based on remigration. Finland allows dual citizenships too.
Haha yes me too. American with Finnish relatives and looking to get out of USA! If you have parents or grandparents who were born in Finland that is one way to be eligible for permanent residency status.
You don't need to "change citizenship", you can be both an American Citizen and a Finnish Citizen. I'm both a British Citizen and an Irish Citizen, I have both passports. I want to move to Finland, it's so beautiful. Luckily I have an EU passport so I won't need to apply for a visa or residency permit.

Kiitoksia for this informative video! I guess I would have to wait 4 years since I have relatives in Finland. I heard that if your grandparents were born in Finland, you can get citizenship that way. But what if that was prior to independence? It shouldn’t make a difference because Finnish church records are so well kept.

Great video Aleksi. Easy to understand yet thorough. Just one question. I know some countries, for example the USA can grant you citizenship if you have some military service in the US defense forces. Can a non Finn serve in the Finnish Defense Force and maybe use that to add to their citizenship application?
well, if one of your ancestors were finnish then there's a special thing you can fill out and youll get your finnish citizenship. i'd suggest you look into it! good luck
This one is the rarest and possibly not many people know about it. It is not written anywhere except in the application itself. You can get exempted from language requirement if your JOB requires Finnish citizenship, and there is no way around it. Basically if your employer proves that in order for you to perform your work duties, the citizenship is a must! Happens in very rare and distinct jobs but it is an option to select in the application and then ou can attach the letter of explanation.
I know it's an old video ... but you might have some insight ... all those things that you need for citizenship ... but how would it be if you were a VERY wealthy person that wanted to retire to Finland? How does that work out? Very little information on retiring to any Scandinavian country if you're cash rich and want to spend the rest of your life "just living the good life" ...
well, i think the way Finland looks at it is that IF you want to live there you need to prove that you will be a productive person in society there and can prove it, not like the USA where we just take anyone.
Please do not come to Finland. People do not like the presence of Islam there and It is a horrible country for muslims to live in. You can find a better life somewhere else.
Swedish language is the easier way to get citizenship but I think Finnish is more important to live in Finland socioculturally for sure. Not hard as Chinese as a native Turkish speaker.
I actually consider to apply PhD in Finland since it is free for non-EU citizens. My aim is to support my self with part-time jobs. Also my Swedish is B2 level. So only thing is for me is to find a job after graduation in Finland.
My father (now passed) was born in Finland and was a dual (canadian) citizen at the time of his passing, I have relatives there, the family farm has been in the family for around 300 years. I would quite happily move to finland and give up my canadian citizenship to do so, with the state of this country these days I am very seriously wanting to look into it. Just wondering how those factors would play into the process...

Non-EU guide for Finnish citizenship 1) Graduate from a Finnish university or univ. of applied sciences to apply for jobs as part of the local workforce 2) Find a job in Finland and stick to it 3) Learn Finnish for a couple of years and pass the YKI test 4) Get married or establish a serious, ongoing, long-term (2 years minimum) registered romantic relationship with a Finnish citizen to establish a permanent family connection 5) After 5 years of continous and law-abiding residence on the basis of employment and/or family ties, and with proof of your Finnish skills, apply for Finnish citizenship Step 4 is optional, but recommended, as long as the relationship is happy and genuine. The authorities will find out if a relationship is fake. Simply getting married to a Finnish citizen does not entitle one to Finnish citizenship either, as each applicant is reviewed individually.
Can the application be of a dual-citizenship in nature? Like, I don't want to totally revoke my original citizenship but I want to have a Finnish citizenship as well? Is this allowed or possible if ever? Btw, thank you so much for this video. :)

Hello Good greetings I'm indian, I wanted to shift to Finland you know why just because of education system, I love that. And i will shift to when I finish my medical college. Also thank you so much for sharing the stuff I needed.
There's a problem. I'm not allowed to simply come and live in Finland 4-5 years without a residence permit. It's required if I'm gonna stay there longer than 90 days. In order to get it I need to have one of these solid reasons for residence: 1) Working 2) Studies 3) Family ties 4) Re-immigration 5) Finnish heritage 6) International protection. Otherwise they will just kick my ass out of your country. None of the options fit in my case. I've got an online business and don't do jobs. Graduating from a university in Finland doesn't help to get its citizenship. I've got no family ties there, no Finnish heritage (I don't know if I do though) and I'm not a refugee. If I say: ''well, I wanna stay in Finland just because I love it'', it probably won't work. Being lucky enough to get married there in 3 months doesn't seem realistic. Any ideas?

The best two countries in Europe are Switzerland and Norway. Their passports are more powerful (as non EU members) than any other EU member. In this two countries you also do earn more money per month than in any other country in Europe. I live in Switzerland and I went to Norway. People from both countries do have very good savings they live in very good houses and they drive expensive cars 😎👍

I have a question: If you get your citizenship before the end of compulsory army age, are you obliged to attend your army service period?
Yes, because then you are considered a Finnish man like all the others.
What are the requirements to teach in high school in Finland? Do I have to be a citizen or I just have to know the language at a certain level while being a resident?
Depends what you teach but you need at least a Masters degree and definitely Finnish skills if you plan to teach in Finnish. Google might give better answers. .
Did newborn in finland give his parents citizenship please ?
I think so.

If I’m an American citizen how would I live in Finland like how do I settle and make my life over there?
Your best bet would be to get a Finnish gf and marry in and/or get a tech job. This is basically how most western foreigners come to be here
Is it true that for men specifically, they have to satisfy their military service for at least two years before they become a Finnish citizen?
First of all, the military service is only 6 months minimum. You are either granted the citizenship at birth or you can acquire it meeting the criteria and they don't require it.
Can I flee america as a refuge? Its starting to be in the retirement plan.
I don't know.
Hoii, can my Finnish child get a Finnish passport if she is born out of Finland.
If you or the other parent has a Finnish passport, you can apply for Finnish citizenship for the child because the child is directly related to you.

But what do you, finns, think about all immigrants living in Finland and even trying to get the citizenship? =) At least those who arrived from Russia (I'm Russian).
Well if you ask me, in case you pay taxes and respect the culture it's fine. Some people do disagree tho.
Finland was part of Russian Empire before 1917

Where from the US are you from & was it difficult to find work when you first moved there? I’m seriously considering a move there (from the U.S.) in about a year or so (possible long term goals with a Finnish woman). I’ve started on my path to learn the Finnish language, but it is slow going. Any advice on the move, job market and learning the language is appreciated. Thanks.
What is required to live there without citizenship?
Kevin Pickering it’s vice versa. I moved to Southern California from Helsinki
