He's using acetone or isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue used to keep the back cover together.
For a easy service, without it you will struggle with the cover, and maybe scratch it or even bend it.

@@willcline7992 unfortunately, acetone will also dissolve many plastics. 99% IPA is a safer bet
