  • I do an initial test on the Carnivore X by Camillus. A crazy looking blade that might just be a great budget blade for survival and bushcraft wood processing. I take an honest look at this $24 Wal-Mart special.

Looks like it falls into a machete style tool. Good for easy 1" 2 " limbs for firewood and shelter building.
Seems like it will need constant maintenance on the edge. For a couple bucks not bad.

I've used the carnivore X to decapitate pigs to fit on a home-made roaster more than once. It's an ok chopper but, it really shines as a 1/2 to 3/4 inch brush clearer for carving trails to deer blinds.

I just bought one at Wal-Mart for $26 dollars as a christmas gift, not sure if mine is an upgraded version but it comes with a moulded hard plastic sheath and a smaller knife, looks great for chopping and clearing brush or if you're attacked by zombies.

It's a great "beater knife" for chopping and digging and saves wear on your good knives. This model is an upgrade from the previous green camouflage model. The improvement the X offers is full tang and no blade serrations. The previous model has one of the grippiest handle materials EVER and was a better weight and balance. I used it to death to chop briars , small limbs and saplings. I never had an issue w the partial tang.
The Camillus Carnivore series is one of the best lines of cheap knives out there.

Great video and review. After I purchased mine, I used a file and sharpened the "chisel" at the end of the blade. Second only to my 9" Fiskars brush hook, priced the same,it's the best value I could find. I feel the saw has an excellent design, but the kerf is too wide. It's great for notches though. I'm in the process of making the sheath left handed too.

I bought this as a machete when I am dogging while Deer hunting. The Carnivore is a solid performer for the price, If I had one complaint it was the handle! I am planning to remove the handle to see what I have to work with. I fear it might be a slim piece of steel under the handle. You have to wonder since it's a full tang blade why they covered the tang up. I plan to wrap mine with a 550 paracord wrap.

I finally bought one yesterday after weeks of passing it up on the shelf. My local walmart had 2 types, the one with the smaller knife and the saw on the spine, and the regular one with no extra knife and the saw was the bottom part of the blade with a smooth spine. Every now and then they would stock the better one on the same rack in front of the other knifes for the same price so when i saw they had it there i snagged it.

The ladder-grip on the topside is for the saw feature so your fingers can curl over them, and you palm doesn't slide onto the straight edge on top. Without it, your back and forth saw grip can become slippery, risking sliding right up over the grip guard onto the straight edge with your palm. Gloves are probably the best comfort solution for hacking on the straight edge side, and probably couldn't hurt during sawing to keep from slicing your thumb and index finger V-union on your palm on the tool. As we all know, injure your hands and you're finished in the woods and hampered in the urban world.
The hook on the saw end is good for gripping vines to pull them up in a handful to either slice right there as a hook blade, or use the machete feature to hack through grasses gathered in your hand. The blade is heavy enough to have significant force in the arc, and hacking should be focused closer to the end, not at the grip. Close camp work is better done nearer the hand for dexterity and control. Balance point is under the "C" in camillus on the blade near the grip - about halfway the entire length - indicating there is indeed metal tang running through the rubberized handle. A blade that falls forward at the halfway mark is probably a rat tail tang. Cheap knives can cheat by putting a pommel tip on the end, without any connection to the blade just for appearance of 'full tang', and light duty only. Be sure to take handle material into consideration when checking for balance. A stainless handle will weigh more, and plastic less. A hefty tang will push the balance halfway of the whole piece because tho there is less steel in the handle, the grip material may make up for the difference in weight. A cheap tang at the half mark will tip significantly toward the blade. Arc the machete a couple times and a full tang will be felt in leverage in the handle itself (blade goes down, handle pushes up). A rattail tang can be FELT in the grip through the arc. The swing force is not felt in your hand to the same degree. Rattails on japanese steel might be fine for weight reduction, but cheap and rushed processing can cause microscopic brittleness that will snap on baton after a few uses. Camillus has been working to correct that with each incarnation of the carnivore. I also have the shorter 8" blade carnivore but it worries me for batoning, being among the flagship products that snapped. As they develop the product, you can FEEL the improvements in your hand.
I agree the saw teeth are awkward because their spacing between rows is about 1/4 inch ... the width of the blade ... and too coarse for smooth sawing without snagging unless its very soft wood like pine. If bench grinding, I might grind those teeth tips from 180 dg straight up, to just off perpendicular - each row points ground inward toward each other a little more - so they're closer together tho a tad shorter, but just as sharp and perhaps more stable. I don't use the saw function much and use this machete more for batoning and machete clearing. To use the saw feature more efficiently, hack a V into the wood first with the machete, to keep the saw from wandering during those first few frustrating strokes. If the saw binds, hack again to open the groove.
Pommel on the grip end can be used for bludgeoning fish, snapping game bones and cartilage, breaking brittle materials like clay or shale or glass, starter depressions for drilling down in soft wood. I don't know why they rounded the pommel instead of leaving it flat and blunt, tho I suppose the rounded teeth can be used to scrape concentric grooves if needed.
Remember if the blade snaps it will flip back at you, so avoid 90 degree strokes in front of your face. Stay at about 30 dg or more in arc from the sides, and make sure your mates are well out of range of your flying blade, preferably a few feet behind you, not working off to the sides. This is also true in the last strokes where the branch suddenly breaks free and the blade is finishing its arc in your knee. Angled cuts will allow you some leeway to dodge the incoming stroke.
I LIKE paracord in the grip hole since hitting a wood knot - or accidentally bounce off the boulder base you're using - can cause the whole machete to wind up in the river or down the cliff or worse, in a mate standing nearby. Cordage also controls the arc of a machete gone rogue, keeping it where you can grap the wild and free handle quickly again. Flip the cord over the handle and grip inside it, but don't lasso your wrist. It will give you more last minute options.
It's important to remember this machete has a tanto style double edge which is good for sheering and scraping, chisel and prying, digging, and other camp uses, but is illegal in some states. In Michigan, and other farm states, this blade does fall in the category of machete - or farm tool - and is a possible loophole should you be stopped with it in your truck. It's likely why Walmart sells them fearlessly in the camping section. It makes sense Police don't want to get stabbed and are on the look out for weapons even beyond your Bowie ... yes even those machetes stored in their sheath in the back of your vehicle and inside a pack or tool box. Law enforcement can't be too careful, and you shouldn't be cruising for a weapons charge just because someone isn't making quota that month.
    Hope these tips help :)

I own the X, and after filing down those HORRENDOUS spines on the backside of the handle I love it. And as far as the ferro goes, who doesn't carry an actual pocket knife that's perfect for those anyway?

When that Carnivore-X first came out a couple years ago I got one on discount for $13 from "Wally World" and took it for a 4 day backpack camping trip in a wilderness area of Upper Michigan and it worked great with no fails. I chopped up much small to medium sized live and dead hardwoods. The saw back works well for tinder prep, but I found the chopping it can do is far more efficient than the sawing it can do...basically it will chop any thing the same diameter a lot faster than using the saw back.

Although the Camillus name is owned by Acme Brands (whatever that is) they do have some nice blades on the general market. If I'm not mistaken, the *Western* brand knives are made by the same folks as Camillus, and I think a couple of other nondescript brand titles. To be honest, they are pretty good, and some are just downright tough as monkey teeth. The *Carnivore X* is an animal as far as budget knives are concerned. I have 2, so I decided to modify the blade on one of them, that's a bad idea, because even with the toughest cutting wheel on my angle grinder, it took 40 minutes to cut off a section about 1.5 inches long. Towards the core of the blade it cuts a little easier, but that first 1.5mm is insane to cut through... So that *Titanium* coating isn't a joke. I didn't think it was for real, or really anything to talk about, but it's no gimmick, that *Titanium* coating is for real. I got blue sparks for 15 minutes before I got through it, and then again cutting through the other side. So far, I have NO intention of modifying my other one. Great video, calm and smart.

After seeing this in Walmart before, I knew this was cheap. But man, oh man, cheap it is not. Chops well, the saw is sharp as hell, and it’s sturdy enough for most prying tasks. The o it fault I find with it is the handle is too slippery to chop with, but some fighting tape on it and it’s one of the best feeling choppers I own (And I have a good collection of choppers)

I have the same thing and you're raising the same points I did, the handle has a nice shape but the rough plastic makes it uncomfortable. Easiest fix is to just get some leather lace and wrap it. You can get 2 feet of it for $8 on amazon.

The small blade that comes with it... That's what I would have used to strike that rod. I know it does not depict in any way the quality or ability of the larger blade, but given that the package comes with the small blade... That could be one use for it. Probably good for shaving sticks as well. Definitely good for tying on the end of a longer stick to make a spear of sorts. I bought my Camillus setup a couple months ago. I have yet to use it for anything. But after watching your video I am going to go outside and see what I can do with it.

I know that when I buy a knife it doesn't just sit up on the shelf and look pretty like what other people would do to it, when I buy a knife it gets used for what I bought it for. And I dont go easy on it, it gets used good

Mostly it's all about the type of steel and how sharp you're able to get it. Otherwise the only other thing is whether it's got a one piece design or if the handle they produced don't come apart or come off after many uses.

  • @MrAjusog

I like your review, but not fully convinced on the knife. Were there any rolls or knicks on the blade? I didn't get this because there's no reason to use the saw side if you cant push down on it due to the knife blade on the other side and the handle being parallel to the saw. A regular wood saw is better because the handle is perpendicular to the blade so dont need to push down the saw teeth into the wood. I didn't see anything about this knife that you couldn't do with a $8 hatchet from harbor freight, even the feather sticks. In fact, a hatchet would be better with a ferro rod that that knife.

I would really like to see you do a review of the small knife that comes with that machete if you are willing. I've really come to appreciate your videos and your channel. If you are not willing I understand. Thank you for the work that you put into your channel, it had helped me more than you could ever realize. Also, for what it's worth, the spine of that smaller knife, although strangely shaped can really devastate a ferro rod.

Striking a Ferro Rod would be the job for the little knife just because it's a big knife I mean it can do everything it could but I'm thinking you would want to hold the blade down with your material in front of the handle area and Spark that way

A becker tactool is designed to pry. This is a machete. The only thing they have in common is the squared tip & it's for different purposes on either knife. A tactool knockoff it definitely is not.

The saw works best on bone. Not wood. Chop then saw. Its not for processing wood. Its purely survival. I've abused many already. It's worst case tool survival situation. Use a hatchet for wood.
