    A couple of years ago one of my local Wal-Marts had a clearance sale as they were down sizing there knife department. I picked up quite a few items, one was a nice small Camilus skinning knife for $5 and a hatchet saw combo for$15. The knife was really good and the hatchet combo was good enough to keep in my trunk (and it has saved me a couple of times). I have nothing bad to say about the company. Cheers 🇨🇦

    Yeah for what it’s worth, these are great knives. I’ve had one for years. Also, it’s nice to see a blade bend rather than break. A broken blade can’t be repaired especially not in the field.

    I like the approach that you have taken, with your buddy helping you show the ups and downs of this blade. It's obviously stainless of a lower caliber. But I really like your channel, and the way you actually test things, instead of assuming they are good. As a US Marine Combat Veteran I never use my knives to split wood. That's me, I know people that do, and that's fine. I prefer a hatchet or camp axe. But I am a very crazy knife 🗡 guy. My wife, before she passed away about 8 months ago, used to freak out about the size of my knife 🗡 collection. But Camillus has great knives. I have 3 of their fixed blades. They are all cheap Walmart specials. But, I would trust my life with one of them. I have the Camillus Titanium...I only really like it because of the rubberized handle, it's just heaven to your hands. But enuff of my jabbering, great video my friends. Thank you. New Subscriber by the way, I would definitely appreciate the return. Thank you.

    A strategically placed lanyard hole would trap the little tools and keep them from disappearing on you. The hole through the tang would be strong and the part that goes through the tools could have a slot between the hole and the butt of the handle so it would still pop free.

Other than that I think it would be a very good 1st time knife or just something to use around the camp for basic stuff like you guys pointed out...no pun intended. The Walmart description says 420 steel, not 420HC. So that's less carbon than 3CR13 at about .15% and a hardness of 54 HRC. That's probably as hard as that steel can get.

  • @kentuckyboy541
    @kentuckyboy541 Рік тому +2

    420 can be pretty good if heat treated properly. Look at buck... reprofile to 20 degrees all the way down to ceramic then strop. Probably be decent if you can sharpen. Wonder what the ceramic angle is on the sheath...oops tip bending makes me suspicious of the heat treat. In some ways better than breaking but that makes me think 55 or 56 hrc.

Im not scared to push that camilius as hard as I need, besides heavy prying I wouldn't have a concern. Although if they gave it a flat grind instead and went with 14c28n or something better than 420 they would really be on to something lol, but great video and nice find 👍 ill have to check that out when my Walmart gets them in lol.

      @@jamescooper2618 14c28n family of steels probably wouldnt raise the price alot but it would raise it for sure, then it would be in a different ranking bracket imo. Even though it is a lower quality steel its all about the heat treat, and in my experience they've done pretty good with those....and in fact I have 3 of them with no issues. I dont know of any other brand that offers the features, and a decent product at a price almost anyone can afford.

    I can't find this knife anywhere, I hope it eventually shows up at my local Walmart...
    I enjoyed the quality of the WWII Camillus knives, even if their Quality Control was not consistent when they were bought out by Acme the knives looked better but also thinner. (In 1989 I had a Camillus Pilots Survival Knife, a US Cattaraugus 225Q Knife and an Imperial M3 Knife locked in a Halliburton Aluminum Case in my trunk while travelling to Toronto which is like a 100 mile drive from Buffalo. And my car got the lucky number and the Canadians went through it for a routine safety check; used my car keys (without my permission) and they found my locked case in the trunk. I told them what was in there and they demanded the keys which I politely declined telling them I was a WWII Collector who was visiting a fellow WWII Collector in Toronto and there was no law prevented me from bringing them into Canada in such a fashion. (I was NOT selling or trading them.) They put me in 'cuffs searched my person for the keys and when they came up empty took to my Halliburton Case with a hammer and chisel destroying the case! They told me the knives were contraband and confiscated them, they also told me that I would probably be getting citations for attempting to bring them across the Canadian Border! And I was released later that night having spent more than 12 hours being detained. A lawyer back home said that we had little chance of getting them back but filed an appeal with the Consulate ( I never did receive any citations.) The receipt I was given was not a property receipt only an incident report with no charges listed (there were no serial numbers on the knives as that's how they came from the factory!) About two years later someone from the consulate told my lawyer that the knives had been destroyed and my Lawyer asked for that in writing as well as a copy of the laws or regulations that were violated, they agreed to his request but we NEVER got a single piece of correspondence from them. I see currently on-line the RIA auctioned off a much worse conditioned Imperial M3 for $1495 eBay had a horrid conditioned US Cattaraugus 225Q Knife for $199 and used forsa*e listed a similarly 'not so nice as mine' Camillus Pilots Survival Knife from my era at $290. Which makes me oh so much happier with our wonderful northern neighbors!)

On the other hand don't settle for a $9.95 special just because of the price. Your knife is an essential Tool in the outdoors and could make a vital impact if something goes sideways out there one day.

    seriously, the cheap knives of today are as good as and sometimes better than the "good" knives of the 80s and 90s.
    They used to be made of crappy pot metal, but now they're 420 (and as Buck uses, they don't use 440c anymore), 1050, sometimes 1095 and AUS-8 (close to 440c)

    • @flipflat4814
      @flipflat4814 Рік тому

      Buck doesn't use 420, or at least I haven't seen it use by them.
      Buck uses 420HC it's about twice the carbon content👍.
      (Bucks 420 HC is also believed to be a better formula than most) plus the legendary Paul Bos heat treatment process.
      420 is roughly
      Carbon 0.15 - 0.38%
      Manganese 1.00%
      Chromium 12. - 14%
      Sulfur 0.03%
      Phosphorus 0.04%
      Nickel 1.00%
      Silicon 1.00%
      420HC roughly
      Carbon .45 - .52%,
      Chromium 13.00%
      Manganese 0.80%
      Silicon 0.80%
      Nickel 0.50% or less
      0.6% Molybdenum
      0.3% Vanadium

    Cheap knives almost always mean poor heat treat. 420 stainless is really soft too. It won’t hold an edge for more than a couple days. No matter how many gimmicks a knife has and how cool the blade shape is, without a good heat treat on a good steel, it won’t be a knife I’d ever carry. $20 bucks aside, poor blade quality is the deal breaker. I’d rather save $20 fifteen times and get a good knife.
