What is wrong with all of you demeaning a genre of music because it isn't to your taste? I'm sure there are those who don't care for musicals, but that doesn't mean that they believe it shouldn't be considered music in its own respect. At one time, people felt jazz was noise because it didn't follow predictable patterns like "proper" orchestration. When we saw the staircase in Auntie Mame (which was filmed several years after Tea for Two), I remarked that the reason they had painted the railing white for Mame was that some guy tap danced all over it and scratched the finish so they had to paint it. :-)
@Aldo This makes no sense, the pants here are all very baggy and loose. If anything, modern fashion with skinny jeans would emphasize thinness more. You're just looking for any excuse to hate on modern culture whether it makes sense or not.

Between 1930 and 1955, musicals were a Hollywood staple, often produced on fairly small budgets. Frequently, they were improbably plotted melodramas whose sole function was to justify dancing and singing performances by the many talented performers under contract. Virtually all Hollywood players were expected to sing and dance a little, and most studios had instructors them. You need a deep pool of talent to draw upon to produce even an average musical, like Tea for Two. Rock 'n roll, the advent of TV, and changing cinematic tastes led to darker and more political musicals after 1955, and the competition with TV induced Hollywood to make musicals that were increasingly spectacular and expensive. Consequently, they became less predictably bankable and more formulaic. Few of them have ever matched the sheer fun of the productions during this golden age of Hollywood musicals. Even fewer have matched the incredible talent of the performers and performances captured in these films. The quality speaks for itself.
I like how the men look well put together and have their pants on their waistline, not sagging under their behinds. Smiles galore. It’s nice to see happy people enjoying the moment.
